Xbox One Exclusive 'Sunset Overdrive' Might Not Get Anymore Expansions

According to recent tweets from developer Insomniac Games, Xbox One exclusive 'Sunset Overdrive' might not receive anymore expansions.

TheGreatGamer3311d ago

"Do you think Sunset Overdrive would have done better as multiplatform?" Nah an additional 20 or so million users wouldn't have helped it do better at all /s. Seriously though, this game was a lot of fun but I guess it might've appeared a bit childish to a lot of gamers but I thoroughly enjoyed SO and the add-ons even if they were a bit short imo

raWfodog3311d ago

Hopefully, they'll release an edition with all the extra content included. That'll be perfect for me when for when I finally pick up an XB1.

breakpad3311d ago Show
Monkey5213311d ago

There is a version like that available in the digital store. So whenever you get one, it's there to pick up!

nitus103311d ago

Looking at the few game-play videos of Sunset Overdrive, to me it looks like a re-skinned Ratchet with less funny comments and without Clank. This is not surprising since Insomniac Games actually make the games.

Personally I do like the Ratchet and Clank series and I do think Sunset Overdrive would be a fun game to play however I would not consider buying a particular console unless it had other games that I was interested in and before anyone pipes up and says Halo, GoW and Foroza, I have zero interest in those types of games.

InTheZoneAC3311d ago

I am not saying anything, other than simply why would you choose xb1 over ps4?

Just curious

raWfodog3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

@InTheZoneAC

If that question is for me, I already have a PS4.

I'm interested in getting an XB1 mainly for Sunset OD, Quantum Break, and Scalebound. But I don't see myself getting one before 2017 since Scalebound is set for Holiday 2016 release.

I've always said I'm not interested solely in particular systems. I just play the games that I like and if I have to get a certain system to play it then so be it.

dantesparda3310d ago

Damn, you'd buy a console just for 3 games?

pinkcrocodile753310d ago (Edited 3310d ago )

I love this game, I'm not bothered about DLC for it mind this game is great as it is. I'd rather Insomniac have some fun creating something new.

@InTheZoneAC & @dantesparda

It's rather a silly question. You can't answer a silly question like that with one answer since the answer is subjective.

It may be that Sony don't produce the games you want or that Sony doesn't provide a system with enough online stability for your liking or... Like in my case I don't play Japanese themed games (Final Fantasy, Shemue, Last Guardian etc etc).

We bought a PS4 in May and I do have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Playing The Order 1886 and currently TLOU Remastered. We really enjoyed playing UC3 on PS Now though £15.98 for 2 months wasn't funny.

So we are only really looking forward to UC4 (Excellent) and That Dino Robot game (Interesting).. Not much else at the moment.

We are curious about what other PS4 exclusive none Japanese games are coming out in the next 6 months though)

On Xbox One we are getting all the multiplats and of course can't wait for ROTTR (We can't be bothered waiting 12 months for the PS4 version.

So you see, there is more than one answer and I'm sure that other posters on here will give completely different answers.

Kingthrash3603310d ago

@raw
Well said.
@dante
If you bought a console at launch you probably bought it for 3 games. No difference from him wanting to buy it for 3 games right now.
@On topic....dang not even a year out and no more support. I liked this game. It didn't sell well so I guess they are letting it be .

raWfodog3310d ago (Edited 3310d ago )

@dantesparda

Well, I said 'mainly' for those three games and there are other games that have piqued my interest but not the Halos, GoWs, or Forzas (just not my preference). And since I more than likely wouldn't get it before 2017, there may be more that make it to my 'must-have' list. So who knows?

But, yeah I bought the original PS just to play Final Fantasy VII so why wouldn't I buy a console just to play a few (or one) games? I eventually picked up more games for it after I finished FFVII but basically, I only play one game at a time. I'm not the type to constantly switch out between titles while I'm currently engaged with one.

Also, both PS4 and XB1 each have 'free' games offered each month so the library will grow regardless of what games I actually buy.

Basically, its a hobby and people tend to spend money for hobbies that they enjoy. You got to pay to play, as they say :)

Has it sold 20 million units on the XB0?

Lenrulesdaworld3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

nope, wouldn't sell 20 million units if it went multi though and not cause it's not a good game. It's just not on th elevel of a Halo or Uncharted but its a good game none the less. Think it sold about a mil or a lil more.

3311d ago
freshslicepizza3311d ago

will any game sell 20 million on one system in this generation?

lvl_headed_gmr3311d ago

Not sure how you come to terms that just because PS4 has 20+ consoles sales would equate to 20 more million purchases of Sunset Overdrive.

Maybe you should review PS4's attach ratio to get a better and logical idea on how many Sunset Overdrive purchases may occure.

Persistantthug3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

The game would probably have approx 2 million sold units between both PS4 and XBOX. Now, if that actually makes a significant difference vs the money that Microsoft funded/paid to Insomniac......well, that I don't know. I guess we'd have to ask Insomniac.....but I doubt they'd be willing to say.

JEECE3311d ago

You'd also need to factor in that the PS community loves to ignore great Insomniac games in favor of annualized garbage.

Wh15ky3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

"Not sure how you come to terms that just because PS4 has 20+ consoles sales would equate to 20 more million purchases of Sunset Overdrive."

Not sure you understood what he said?...

"Nah an additional 20 or so million users wouldn't have helped it do better at all /s."

ScorpiusX3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

Thank you , Bubbles & agrees going your way.

lvl_headed_gmr3311d ago

@Wh15ky

I don't think you understand. The size of the PS4 market base is irrelevant. Whether its 20 PS4 owners, 20 thousand owners or 20 million owners, the sales of SSOD could still be zero. The variable to determin the number of sales that would have helped Insomniac would have to either = or be > the cost MS put forth in the deal. A number nobody knows.

The best way to determin what level of sales SSOD could have had on the PS4 is to calculate the attach ratio. There you can determine what Insomniac would make from SSOD PS4 sales. Now we still don't know the dollars behind the deal, but using attatch ratios at least provide an idea of how much the PS4's market may have helped.

Wh15ky3310d ago (Edited 3310d ago )

Wow! Seriously?

I still hope this comes to ps4. It's insomniac and they own the ip so anything is possible. Also one positive is their long time fanbase is on playstation

That kind of announcement would do well at playstation event

Also I really hope all future entries come to Xbox one, ps4 and pc

Sony made these decisions and they are head scratchers

First said no to EA acccess

Secondly said no to both Titanfall and sunset overdrive. SoNY tried buying insomniac on few different occasions, but insomniac wanted to stay independent

Now in this day and age where developers do want to own the ip especially those with proven track records like insomniac.

Titanfall 2 is coming to ps4

I hope sunset overdrive 2 or whatever it's called will make it to ps4 too

Not against the idea of releasing a complete edition of sunset overdrive for Xbox one, ps4 and pc

3311d ago
3-4-53311d ago

* When Dev's make expansions, it takes time away from them getting to their next game.

I'd rather they just start on a new ip or the next one.

Bigpappy3311d ago

I bought it and it wasn't for me. This is aimed at pre-teen to teen. Too over the top and B rated for me.

green3310d ago

Same here. I bought it because it reminded me of Jet Force Radio Future that i loved on the Sega Dreamcast.

After playing it for a few hours, i dropped it and realized that - while a good game - it is not for me.

dantesparda3308d ago

I said the game looked to goofy and all I got was voted down by the fanbase.

ChuckTheIceMan3311d ago (Edited 3311d ago )

Which would probably only amount to 300,000 game purchases. I have an Xbox and Sunset overdrive did not appeal to me at all.

Blaze9293311d ago

game was too short. That's all really.

Yeah great game. May have appeared to be a bit of a kids game to most putting a lot of people off. I would recommend this game to anyone with an xbox one

343_Guilty_Spark3311d ago

Do you have any numbers to back this up? Because last I checked when asked if a future sequel of SSO would appear anywhere else, Insomniac said no. Apparently, it didn't do too bad.

Christopher3311d ago

That's not a sign of it not doing too bad. It could be a sign of how poorly it did as well. There's nothing here to determine one way or another. What we do know is that Insomniac is moving forward and are working on their next project.

showtimefolks3311d ago

Could you please provide me with a link where insomniac said that future entries in the series won't be multi platform?

I thought they said they had no plans to do a port of sunset overdrive to any other platform. Insomniac owns the ip and it wouldn't surprise me one but if their entry comes to Xbox one, ps4 and pc

A game like sunset overdrive is built fot playstation fanbase. Just look at crash, spyro, jak and dexter, sly and ratchet and clank

Sunset Overdrive PS5 Port Ruled Out In Favor of Wolverine

Sunset Overdrive was great...

I quite enjoyed the Demons' Souls remake too. I'm more or less begging for a Bloodborne sequel but would snap up a remake in a heartbeat.

Concertoine90d ago

I’d rather play an older unique game than a new Marvel game.

Im so blown out on Marvel, I can’t fathom how some people seem to have a bottomless appetite for it. A studio like Insomniac could do way better.

just_looken90d ago

Yep those poor devs are now a marvel sweat camp

This port and a quick pc patch to fix some bugs would have been a great idea i actualy forgot its not on ps5 you think it would have by now.

But hey they got like you said spiderman 2 pc port then spiderman 3 then spiderman collection with a wolverne/blade tossed in.

Amplitude90d ago

From everything we've seen, it's not like Insomniac is being forced to make Marvel games - it's clearly a good partnership that results in good games. They're still making Ratchet games anyway which is what really matters

Redemption-6490d ago

I have no idea why people like you keep making lies. Does it help you sleep at night? Where are you getting this information that they are either being forced or made into a Marvel camp? Sony approach Insomniac when they were independent to work on a Marvel IP and they picked Spider-Man. After the success of Spider-Man, it was Insomniac who pitched Wolverine to Sony/Marvel and was given the green light

-Foxtrot91d ago

This is new…it pretty much confirms it can happen eventually.

I thought Microsoft had publishing rights or something

Eonjay91d ago

Yes you are right. Microsoft allegedly has rights to the first game. Perhaps Microsoft wasted to sell it back to Sony in exchange for a port to Xbox Series. This would make the statement make more sense because I can't imagine that a port of this game even compares to the creation of Wolverine. So Microsoft probably requested a multiplat port.

gold_drake91d ago

yeh, the article says as much that MS does have publishing rights.

Profchaos91d ago

They do but Microsoft doesn't really care about the game they are considering Halo 1 for ps5 so this would be nothing

badz14991d ago

MS doesn't just have the publishing rights for SSoD, they also have publishing rights for the next 2 games in the franchise!

Zeke6890d ago

" The game was later pitched to various publishers, which rejected them because Insomniac demanded to retain ownership of the intellectual property. The project was later pitched to Microsoft Studios, which was eager to work with Insomniac. Microsoft allowed Insomniac to own the rights to the game"

Seems Insomniac own the rights after all...

badz14990d ago

@Zeke68

publishing rights is not the same as IP rights or ownership. for SSoD, Insomniac owns the IP, MS owns the publishing rights. just like Sony with Spider-man. Sony only owns the publishing rights to the movies and games but the IP is still owned by Marvel/Disney.

Zeke6890d ago

See my comment below. When Insomniac left M$ they let Microsoft keep their publishing rights for... drumroll... Xbox and PC.
If they want to release it on PS they can let Sony publish it.

10 Years Later, Sunset Overdrive Still Remains A Beloved Xbox Exclusive

Does it still hold up in 2024?

We've still got a few months to go, but October marks the 10-year anniversary of this Insomniac Games title, with the developer having since moved on to work on the Marvel's Spider-Man games for PlayStation. It was assumed that Sunset Overdrive might make its way to other platforms eventually, but that hasn't happened as of yet.

Christopher173d ago

So beloved that it sold so well that there's a sequel and Insomniac never had the opportunity to go back to Sony to develop games exclusively for Sony.

RaidenBlack173d ago

ngl, I was low-key expecting Sunset Overdrive to migrate to PS as well along with Hi-Fi Rush and SoT

Christopher173d ago

I think that would require Insomniac going back to work on it to port it over, probably why that's not happening.

RaidenBlack173d ago

Didn't Sony help with SoT port?

Christopher173d ago

I think only in so far as they support every piece of software heading their way? They have that team who specializes in helping people port games, not just SoT, and then the one team that takes PS5 games and ports them to PC (that's their full time job essentially). But that team, the former mentioned one, doesn't do all the work, just help out with how to best do things. So, that team wouldn't port a whole game like Sunset Overdrive.

RaidenBlack173d ago

Ok I thought you meant Insomniac reluctant/Sony not permitting them to go back and work on Overdrive. Hence I added the participation from Sony's side.
But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm.

Christopher173d ago

*** But yea, In actuality its Insomniac not having spare dev time to get involved in the port work, atm. ***

Definitely this. They're working on two major IPs as it is and Sony forced them to layoff some people at the end of last year as well. So, likely not capable of sparing the time because resources are being fully utilized.

badz149173d ago (Edited 173d ago )

There was an article awhile back talking about the situation with SSoD. Insomniac does own the IP and Sony now owns it after they bought Insomniac but the publishing right for SSoD is owned by MS - at least the 1st game still is. MS has to sell the publishing rights like they did with the first Mass Effect game to EA after EA bought Bioware before Sony can do anything with the IP.

Einhander1972172d ago

fr0sty172d ago

Well, with the recent change in policy towards exclusivity, I imagine Sony could get MS to port it over.

Zeref173d ago

Because a game needs to sell 10 million copies for it to be considered beloved 😂

Christopher173d ago

I mean, it's also not a highly rated game, not even in Insomniac's top ten or even top ten on Xbox that year. With this logic, any game can be beloved and so throwing around the word beloved means absolutely nothing. Doesn't have to sell or have great critical reception, just a handful of people need to love it.

Hofstaderman173d ago

You guys are so starved for games you reminiscing about a decade old game made by a now Sony studio. Of course it never sold 10 million, the vast majority of people bought a PS4.

LucasRuinedChildhood173d ago

A game not played by many can still be beloved by those who played it, yeah.

Only making a profit of $567 after 10 years shows that it was not as beloved as it should have been though. That's really bad.

As much as people complain about AAA games not being unique or having fun ideas or bringing in new IP, a lot of gamers don't show up for them. Even less people seem to have played Hi-Fi Rush.

FinalFantasyFanatic172d ago

Replayability could have been better, but I still managed to play it several times. I would have greatly appreciated a sequel and definitely would have been in line to pick it up..

Things happen.

Christopher173d ago (Edited 173d ago )

***I mean, it sounds like you're just hating on the game***

No, that's all the people who refused to accept that this game was beloved and never even bought it. I, on the other hand, bought, played it, thought it was 'okay' and moved on.

Now, what hate did you see in my post other than listing the fact that it's not as beloved as the few who liked it? This and Days Gone get way more love in online discussions than they do in sales and support, I find. Both are okay games, not much more. But for some **unknown** reason, people prop them up often as more than they are.

Profchaos173d ago (Edited 173d ago )

It's in noabs land unfortunately as Microsoft own the publishing rights to sunset overdrives original game while insomniac own the IP.

So Microsoft would have to be onboard with publishing this game on PlayStation systems with the understanding the would not profit from any subsequent games in the franchise unlike the games they are currently releasing on ps5 to get players into their franchises this would be a small cash injection build a fanbase around a game they no longer own then nothing.

Not beloved enough for Xbox owners to buy it apparently, Xbox was the worst possible audience for that game.

Obscure_Observer173d ago

Sony couldn´t give a f* about Insomniac´s freedom of creativity, that´s why you don´t have a port for that game and will not be getting a sequel either!

That franchise wil probably never make a comback thanks to Sony´s greed for money, which have turned Insomniacs into a Marvel´s slave factory until 2030.

It´s sad, but it is what it is.

ApocalypseShadow173d ago (Edited 173d ago )

I didn't know that Ratchet and Clank were part of the Avengers of Marvel? Hidden in the ending credits of Guardians of the Galaxy or something? Captain Marvel?

Beyond the "cry me a river" of your comment that these Marvel games aren't on Xbox, it was Insomniac that was approached by Sony to work with Marvel to make a game. And let them decide what character they wanted to develop. They chose Spider-Man. Must be highly profitable for them. Wolverine is a profitable, recognizable character. And the X-Men definitely are a hot property that gamers would love as a story based videogame. Being that X-Men 97 brings back a popular Saturday morning cartoon and the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU movies coming up.

It was Microsoft's continued incompetence in cancelling the Marvel MMO game and turning down Marvel in making a super hero game as they were asked first.

Keep the tears flowing. It's not greed. It was smart business to say yes. And maybe Insomniac wants to make these games. And not a game that didn't sell well to an audience that doesn't buy games.

Christopher173d ago (Edited 173d ago )

Neither does Microsoft either, based on your own argument here. Microsoft denied the sequel, not Insomniac/Sony. There's also no sign that Microsoft is allowing a port. They control the next two games in the IP and any DLC or the like for the first. But, nothing.

What's sad is people trying to use this game to blame businesses for doing business things that they are both doing as some way to make them look worse. Microsoft wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform and Sony wants to use Insomniac to make a good IP that sells their platform. But, no, Sony bad!

Don't know why the truth that these companies are very much alike is so hard for people to accept.

PhillyDonJawn173d ago

I bought it, along with at least 1-2 million others.

PrinceOfAnger173d ago

Very fun game that need a sequel.

-Foxtrot173d ago

Insomniac: “We went with Microsoft because we want to own the IP so it’s ours”

Microsoft: *owns publishing rights preventing the studio to re-release the original game, make a remaster, remake, any DLC, massive expansions and multiple sequels on other platforms*

The logic is just…I never got it

Owning the IP was Insomniacs main defence when they announced they were making a game exclusively for MS and yet they’ve ended up “owning” an IP they can’t do anything with.

If they went with Sony like normal you might have seen a sequel by now.

Tacoboto173d ago

The winner of the Logic Cake has to be Bungie, though.

Wanted to be free from Halo and MS, so they buy themselves out, only to partner up with Activision, in the same timeframe as Activision ousting the heads of Infinity Ward, for a full decade with Destiny.

... And then things start falling apart in that relationship almost immediately, whodathought!

Christopher173d ago

Hey, when Sony offers to overpay you for your services and signs a contract that says they won't force you to do anything you don't want, who would say no? Such an overpriced purchase from Sony. Poor business, IMHO. But, honestly, I'm not a business person. But, still, I don't understand it.

darthv72173d ago

...and it seems this conundrum is also why the game cannot receive any sort of FPS boost patch for Series consoles. IG wont make it, and Ms can't get another team to do it without consent from IG. I liked it on XBO, but now I also have this on PC and I can tell ya... it definitely benefits from a 60fps frame rate.

badz149172d ago

been playing it at 1080p144fps on my modest pc. not the hardest game to max out and yeah this game definitely needs to be played at high fps considering all the actions

darthv72173d ago

Sadly this may never get the proper fps update it deserves on XB (or even PS) but I now play it on steam and it definitely feels better at 60fps than it did at 30. Its a fast paced game... you need that 60fps in this one.
