Considering that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is drastically different than any other game in the franchise, maybe comparisons really are unfair.
Not as long as you take into account the technology available at the time of each entry's release. Obviously you can't fault the original MGS for not giving Snake eyes or graphical shortcomings like that, but I think the themes and characterization of all of them are timeless enough to be judged on even today's merits, for better or worse.
