Microsoft: We Want More Exclusives

Microsoft, which has been able to capture some important (timed) third-party exclusives such as Rock Band 2 and BioShock, continues to chase more exclusive deals to differentiate Xbox 360 from competitors. Investment in 360-only games a priority, Mattrick tells Edge.

When asked about Xbox 360's weaknesses, Microsoft interactive entertainment boss Don Mattrick replied, "We'd love to have more exclusive hits on our box, absolutely. Are we investing in that? Yes we are. Does that take a lot of time? Yes it does."

Microsoft's exclusive deals go beyond the boxed product. Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3 will both offer exclusive downloadable content for the Xbox 360 versions. PS3 players wanting an extended experience for those games are out of luck.

The big things the 360 has left aren`t so big at all excluding GEOW2.

Fable2- Great game but isn`t going to be a MASSIVE hit.

Fallout3- is D/L content, no one is going to rush out and get a 360 for D/L content.

Too Human- We shall see, if it lives or dies.

Splinter Cell- Having some serious problems.

Alan Wake- IMO is a MYTH and is on PC

Halo Wars- It`s HALO, but it`s NOT HALO at the same time.

Final Fantasy 13- Multiplatform and most likely is releasing on PS3 1st.

Rockband2- TIMED Multiplat, very important. The best thing the 360 has going for it besides Geow2.

On top of that.....GeoW2 has LBP and R2 to deal w/ this time and BOTH could completely over shadow GeoW2. R2 stepped it up more the Geow2 in alot of ways and LBP could be the biggest new franchise of this gen.

My point ....360 has some good stuff, but most of the BIG ones are MULTI, it`s gonna be hard for them to keep up thru the end of 2008 and all of 2009.

Even counting RB2 as timed exclusive, that's not that great imo. I have RB1 and I was very angry at it. #1 - Can't use GH3 guitar & no guitars sold separately for almost 6 months. #2 - Broken strums. #3 - Drums faulty. The list goes on, I feel that this timed exclusive can do something else to the 360 that isn't very happy.

I feel that it gives us PS3 owners the chance to see the REAL review of the game before it comes out. Are the controllers goign to break again? Are the drums sturdy? Is the DLC worth getting the game for? etc. etc.

PS3 has real exclusives. By the time Microsoft matches Sony with real quality exclusives they will be so far in debt that they will have to jump out of the video game industry.

Left 4 Dead the most recent exclusive is lost and now multiplatform for PS3 also. Will Gears 2 and Fable 2 really hold the 360 this fall? I highly doubt it. Gears 1 dissapointed a lot of people and Fable 2 looks unimpressive visually.

Look at it this way, Microsoft is in for the long haul. MS will invest in more development studios in order to pump out more exclusives at a faster rate. They will still invest in third party exclusives, some timed and some not.

Sony is the established video game company. They have worked hard to build a tremendous name for themselves in the industry, with a great long term strategy. MS will work hard to acquire more in-house development to rival what Sony has. MS has the money, and ego to drive themselves to greater and greater heights. Look at the force they have been able to become in a relatively short time in the industry.

Sony has more internal development, but MS still delivers a comparable number of exclusives. And depending on your tastes, MS has better exclusives. As I noted above, in the long term, MS will acquire more and more in-house development.

If one console has more true exclusives that you can only play on that console, and not on a PC. You are going to see the #'s continue to rise as they have been since I'd say Uncharted.

Look at N4G for example. The hottest stories for the 360 are majority multiplats, while the PS3 has more exclusives. MS came out of e3 with nothing but multiplats, and borrowing sony's Singstar/Buzz/Eyetoy games.

MS's heart is in the right place wanting more exclusives. But they dont understand that buying "timed exclusives" is beyond retarded, as well as just buying other consoles exclusives. Why cant they get their studios together( i know, there aren't many ) to make MS brand recognized exclusives?

Yeah Exclusive DLC is too overblown. One thing MS doesn't understand, is that gamers like to move into newer and bigger things. And besides, there's better things to look foward to in the 360's line up like Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Halo Wars, Alan Wake etc. than spend $X on GTA IV DLC.

However, DLC in general is pretty stupid IMO. It's something developers should just include in the game considering we all drop $65 on the damn things.

Every time someone tells me I should get a 360 because I'm missing out on Halo, Gears, Mass Effect, Bioshock (a while ago of course), I would just scoff at them, tell them I have patience, and inform them that it's not 360 exclusive if it comes out on PC.

I really don't need to spend $300+ (and more for online play / rechargeable batteries / HDD) when I have a PC that plays those games just as well or better.

Microsoft wants exclusive things but they are content to copy everyone else. How about doing something original? Xbox Live was worth paying for when there was no competition. But they've been resting on their laurels and falling back on the "Xbox Live is worth paying for" argument too long.
Xbox Live is nothing more than an "instant messenger" engine tacked onto their console. It was hardly an innovation when they first started charging for it on the original Xbox and it's laughable to expect people to pay for it now.
I'm more often ashamed of owning the console than I am having fun playing it. Microsoft just isn't giving it's customers reason to be happy.

This is what happens when you dont have much in terms of first party stuff. You're able to toss around the millions of dollars that would go to your first party studios at third parties to tie up exclusives.

Personally I'd rather invest that in exclusives the competition will never have in their library. Sure they'll lock up some pure exclusives but from here on out I see studios handing out timed exclusives and thats it. Budgets are too high to exclude millions of potential customers.

That fact that MS have been throwing around millions of dollars to secure multi release of 3rd parties PS exclusives is a waste of resources for MS. 50 million alone they spent on GTA4 DLC would have been enough to develop a new AAA exclusive franchise that would have been far more beneficial for MS in the long run.

3rd parties exclusives are going the way of the dodo anyway. From here on end its the real exclusives that will determine who will come out tops this gen. Sony knew this from the beginning. I am fairly sure its the reason why they didn't get into a bidding war with MS to secure 3 parties exclusives like GTA4, FF13, DMC4. When asked why Sony let GTA4 go Phil said that GTA4 is too big for PS3 alone.Sony knew that the cost of dev this gen will skyrocket and the only way for 3rd parties to make their shareholders happy is to eleminate all exclusives.

Sony knew this fact and i am pretty sure they use their resources to fund new and exciting IP from their 1st and second parties like flow,LBP,Infamous,Uncharted,MS ,Resistance,HS,Folklore,EOJ,Wa r hawk, Heavy rain,papaton etc. By doing this not only Sony is building up their huge catalog of exclusive franchise but they also keep their internal studios very happy. On top of these new IP's you have the old one from past gens like GT,GOW,ICO,SOTC,Sing Star,RC,Jak etc that are all exclusive to PS.

To top it off. The once exclusive 3rd parties are still coming on the PS3.

Sounds like famous last words. Exclusive down loadable content is way overrated and Rock Band, as a timed exclusive, is only going to help sell more Guitar Hero World Tour copies. Third parties don't innovate or take risks they capitalize on franchises, and no knew innovations will occur due to the lack of first parties. After all this we find that developers are starting to realize how constrained they are with dvd9 and how hits in visuals will take place due to compression. I am disheartened that FF13 might succumb to this dumbing down and I feel that MS is just holding down progress.

It's not about multiplatform timed exclusivity that sells consoles but their first party, these are the games that show off what a system can do, in house gaming is the most important.

You can't really control what kind of game comes out on your system, if dealing with 3rd party, if you want it to be hard core or casual or whatever you needed to boost unit sales, but you can only pick and choose, whereas first party you have more of a choice to cater to hardcore or casual, because they are in-house and you can tailor to what the market wants at that time and also can wait and release a certain game that is needed to boost unit sales

Note: I am not saying going with third party doesn't give you choices to cater to hardcore or casual, its just that you can bring out a game more suited to the market place needs at that time then if you rely more on 3rd party

Also, MS may have proven themselves, but that means nothing. Trust can easily be broken, and loyalties easily swayed. Not saying this will happen, but it's no where near solid enough to assume MS will win. Especially when PS3 is picking up momentum as 360 is losing it.

The only game I could compare to Uncharted on the 360 is Gears.
I just played through Gears again yesterday.
I also have Uncharted. I doubt you played both, and Im not talking about 5 min at a friends house.
Uncharted is a better game than Gears. It has better gameplay (very similar), better story, and better graphics. The only thing Gears has on Uncharted is decent (at best) online play and its more violent. So if you want to talk about how great Gears is, Uncharted is right there with it, both AAA titles.
