Dismantling the myth of 900p on Xbox One: 70% of the games run at 1080p

The data presented, is referenced numerous sources and statements, a sample of 98 games that showed up between 2013 and 2015, although it is impossible to cover the entire island catalog with the means at our disposal.
Having been terribly benevolent excluding the vast majority of independent games that we knew very well that reach a standard 60/30 fps in 1080p resolution. The first conclusion is a simple percentage: 75.3% of the games running above 900p.

We can see over time an increase in the percentage of games that deliver higher resolution than 900p; either by native 1080p or opting for dynamic resolutions.
This also confirms what many already know what happens during a generation: time passes and developers learn more about the islands, and consequently can do bigger and better things.

This also confirms what many were saying, as time goes developers know more and better the machine and are easing the obstacles with which they were at first.

900p looks very good too, I have Watch Dogs on PS4 (runs at 900p) and it looks almost like 1080p. Don't get me wrong, I'll still get the better version (PS4) but It's not that big of a deal to be honest.

Skate-AK3543d ago

Got the platinum for Watch Dogs and didn't even know it wasn't 1080p. Even just googled it to double check.

Ace Killa 083542d ago

the game didn't even have 60 fps... it was a crappy design from the beginning so it's kinda a big deal

-Foxtrot3543d ago

I don't get why anyone would be happy with 70%. You are paying a lot of money for a console so you'd expect it to run 1080 as a standard...especially when the other console can run more games at 1080.

Why defend it, you've spent your hard earned money on something and at the time it was more expensive than the other console on the market so did people really want to pay more for less.

TheGreatGamer3543d ago

"you'd expect it to run 1080 as a standard" PS4 doesn't either you know? 1080p aren't standard on either console and while I agree it's a shame, you can't pretend that PS4 has 1080p standard as it's a lie.

-Foxtrot3543d ago

Yeah but my point is the PS4 has more titles that can.

Professor_K3543d ago

No your point lies dead

you are making it sounds like xbox gamers bought their console to count pixels. smh tbh

gamertk4213543d ago

So what's your number then? 70% is a no, but 80% is fine? You almost seek to require an absolute, but in retrospect, you backpedaling by saying it's OK on PS4, because they have more. So what is the acceptable number, since PS4 is not at 100% either?

freshslicepizza3543d ago (Edited 3543d ago )

the xbox one is also cheaper. microsoft on their store is selling a 1tb xbox one with forza 6 special edition for $400. how much is a special edition ps4 that's 1tb with a $60 game? or you can buy a xbox one with a game for $350. the cheapest ps4 is $400 at retail.

that needs to be taken into consideration too. the wii u is priced less and guess what, it's less powerful and it doesn't even get games like project cars because the system it much weaker than the xbox one.

someOnecalled3542d ago

This is how PS fanboys work. Flawed logic. Even when they compare how powerful ps4 is to xbone but when you really look act it its not really that much. These console have been out match 3-4 yrs before released.

gamer93542d ago

@Foxtrot
1080p standard? Who asked for this? This is the last thing on my list. How about larger games with new experiences and fun gameplay, that would be fantastic. Put it in 900p or 4k resolution, fun is fun.

Sony was the one saying give me 1080p and 60fps or death and yet Ps4 don't have more 1080p and 60fps then xbox one and wii u

Skate-AK3543d ago

Was that Sony? I thought that was Adam Sessler.

Less of what?

It's also funny how almost everyone can't tell the differences between the two unless side by side comparisons are done and articles specifically point out what to look for.

And even then the differences are minor.

It would be different if the PS4 was so powerful that their games had features, designs and gameplay that made playing on their system so drastically different. But that is not the case at all.

SpaceRanger3543d ago

You're paying the same/more for less of what should be the same as others.

"It's also funny how almost everyone can't tell the differences between the two unless side by side comparisons are done and articles specifically point out what to look for."

No, what's funny is that you and others defend this practice. It's the equivalent of two people ordering a steak for the same price, one gets a prime cut and the other get a choice cut.
Not everyone can tell the difference unless someone came and told you. But does it make it right to pay the same price for a less quality steak? Even if the quality differs by a little?

I mean seriously…who buys a 1080p TV to play 900p games on it?

gangsta_red3543d ago

"You're paying the same/more for less of what should be the same as others."

So should this be applied for PC gamers who have the power to up their resolution and also framerate? Should they pay more because they can do more?

It's the equivalent of both having a prim rib dinner, one steak is cooked well while the other is medium rare. But both plates have the same cut, same vegetables, loaded bake potato and a slaw. Both are still delicious.

I wonder if you were this adamant when the GC, Xbox and Dreamcast had better looking and performing games than the PS2?

"I mean seriously…who buys a 1080p TV to play 900p games on it?"

But then again their are a lot of channels that still don't even output to 1080p/HD. And if the differences and quality are little then why does it matter, does the game look any less gorgeous in 900p?

What's funny is you and others still trying to debate this even after admitting that not everyone can tell the differences.

Revolver_X_3542d ago

"It's also funny how almost everyone can't tell the differences between the two unless side by side comparisons are done and articles specifically point out what to look for."

You know, I get tired of this comment. The X1 and PS4 upscale every game that doesn't reach 1080p. Not to mention your T.V. does this as well. Of course you can't tell the difference when every 900p game on X1 is being stretched to 1080p. Lets see the X1 not upscale your 900p games, then come back here and tell people that lie.

user99502793543d ago

lol. No, you wouldn't.

But you're right about one thing. No point in defending it. Never has been. Most of us console game by choice, and are more than well aware that the grass is greener (and probably thicker and less pixelated) on the PC side of the fence.

Do you honestly expect everyone to complain about something that hardly anyone cared about to begin with? Get real. We are playing games. It's pretty simple.

You might want to consider that you will never be able to turn any significant number of gamers away from Xbox by shouting numbers at them. Not for lack of trying, I'm sure.

donthate3543d ago (Edited 3543d ago )

foxtrot:

Except when most of the 1080p games on your console of choice (that is PS4 for those that don't know foxtrot) runs worse than the one at 900p on Xbox One.

Take MGS5 where PS4 sports 1080p and drops from 60fps to 30fps in scenes, whereas Xbox One sports 900p, but drops only to 48 fps.

Who do you think is getting the poorer experience?

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

In the meanwhile, I'm looking forward to all these exclusives this year and next, plus Crackdown 3 that puts even PC to shame!

:D

JamesBroski3543d ago

You should actually zoom on those pictures. The graphical difference is significant. I prefer my game to look better than having a few fps drops in cinematic that don't affect the gameplay.

"we should stress that these moments are fleeting and very rare indeed."

Even on a PC, with the same drops PS4 is experiencing, I would choose 1080p over 900p any day.

Subaruwrx3543d ago

@donthate Eurogamer's hands on with the PS4 and X1 versions of MGSV was with the pre-released version of the game. The X1 version has already been patched. I'd wait for the PS4 versions patch before passing judgement. After all, the game hasn't been released yet. "Currently, Xbox One has a 1.01 patch available, while PlayStation 4 does not." Hard to imagine that the PS4 version won't be patched to improve performance either at launch or soon after launch.

gangsta_red3543d ago

@James
"You should actually zoom on those pictures."

Lmao...so now we have to zoom in on pics to tell the difference? The hilarity of this.

I wonder how many gamers zoom in while playing?

Dario_DC3543d ago

"Except when most of the 1080p games on your console of choice (that is PS4 for those that don't know foxtrot) runs worse than the one at 900p on Xbox One."

Bull$hit!

You're talking about a game (MGS5) without the day one patch but I can give you tons of games that run way better on PS4 in 2015, not even looking at 2013/2014:

Project Cars, F1 2015, MKX, Arkham Knight, ESO, Dark Souls 2, Borderlands HC, BF Hardline, Evolve, Dying Light etc etc etc... Those are just a few... I could stay here all day showing how wrong you are.

Not to mention that the article calls anything runing over 900p full 1080p! What a joke! 1920x1080 IS FULL 1080p not dynamic or some 1330x1080 weird @ss resolution...
Over 95% of all PS4 games run at FULL 1080p fact!
All the PS4 exclusives run at 1080p that's also a fact! The Xbox one can't even run exclusives at 1080p...
The sooner people let this resolution thing behind the better... I prefer having full 1080p because I hate aliasing and I like my image crisp, but I've played BF4 and Watch Dogs at 900p and it's not the end of the world.... Enjoy what you like and please stop the bull$hit... There's no reason to lie in the interwebs.

Terminatom3542d ago

@gangsta_red

No we don't. It's just that Xbox fanboys like you are so blind that you guys actually need to do this. The difference is really noticeable when you click on the pictures.

Yeah who buys a console to play games anymore? I just launch a game, pause it and count pixels. Its really rewarding

xxjabberxx3542d ago

I play red faction on my PS3 and its100% destructible. Google it its GEO-MOD 2.0

GribbleGrunger3542d ago (Edited 3542d ago )

Are you saying you were unhappy with the XB1 for nearly two years? And on one count you're STILL unhappy with the XB1. That's quite the confession, but well done on being honest.

Nekroo913542d ago

I dont understand why anyone would care about backwards compatibility 2 years after launch. Its usefull when consoles launches but now there's more than enough games on the X1.

Making a scene for playing old games

alb18993542d ago

Gribblegrunger you don't know sarcasm?

-foxtrot said he doesn't understand why would somebody want a console that plays 70% of games with 1080p and I respond to him with sarcasm......just that.
In my opinion I buy things thinking in the future too, so knowing that my console is getting better and better isn't bad at all ether.

did it ever occur to you the other console that also doesn't do 1080p in all of its games cost more? (usa prices)

for $350 you can get a xbox one with gears of war remastered.

for $400 you can get a 1tb xbox one with forza 6 or madden 16 for $400

by comparison the ps4 with the last of us remastered is $400 or with batman

u4one3542d ago (Edited 3542d ago )

it doesn't really bother me because it doesn't make much of a difference or at most enough of a difference from a visual fidelity standpoint to me. i also find that the xbox one just has more games that I personally am into right now. i can't say they are better, but they are better for me and my taste. for example - love racing games, but i do not love drive club. I think its ok, i don't hate it but aside from the graphics, the racing itself is just ok to me. on the xbox i have forza motorsport (which i've loved for a really long time) and forza horizon which isn't as realistic but still exponentially more fun than drive club in my own personal taste. its like a more realistic burnout paradise, full of discovery. in contrast, i don't really love japanese game or niche indie games most of the time and the ps4 usually wins this category... just not for me.

i have both consoles but i definitely use the xbox one more. partially because it controls my tv, cable etc which also makes it easier to just launch apps like netflix and amazon prime etc from too since i can just quickly go back to the dash and i don't need to change the tv input to get to another device. the xbox also works with my logitech harmony universal remote so i don't ever have to get a controller either. if i'm really lazy i can just tell it what to watch and it does it. couple that with external hard drive support, DLNA support, superior multitasking etc as well as pretty much most of the same games, it makes me care even less if some games are 900p.

at the end of the day its a 320x180 resolution difference in some cases, and the pluses and benefits of the rest of the system far outweigh such a tiny difference in resolution for me to simply write the xbox off. i think as a system its pretty cool and dare i say futuristic at times.

just simply my opinions and thoughts. please be respectful! i am doing so as well.

green3542d ago

I did not buy my Xbox One to count pixels but to continue to play great games that i love like Forza and Halo.

Fusion_Ninja3542d ago

THIS! Agreed 100%, Foxtrot. At launch, the Xbox One was $100 more than the PS4, with inferior performance on nearly all multiplat titles. It's a pretty cut-and-dry situation, IMO. Unless you're the most die-hard Halo and/or Forza fan in the world, getting an Xbone just seems senseless...who wouldn't want to play the superior versions of titles?!

"I don't get why anyone would be happy with 70%."

Lol why would anybody be sad? Well Just Cause 3 bombed the metacritic with a 20 but least it achieved 1080p to make up for it.

Yeah that's not quite how that works, not quite.

Bad games are still bad games and good games are still good games regardless of pixels. Your money should be determined by the quality of the game not the pixel. In fact FPS is way better argument because that could either make or break the game.

"Why defend it"

Being more expensive had everything to do with Kinect and not the core console at all, that's why its 350$ with out that paper weight. And you know since I and many, upon many others can't tell the different between 900 and 1080 the argument is dead in the water especially if you need DF to spot the difference for us. Other than that, ppl see one number being bigger than the other and pretend they see a HUGE game changing difference.

RzaDaRazor3543d ago

Kinect is not a paperweight. In fact, it's amazing. It is what differentiates the bone from the ps4. I will never have another entertainment center without kinect or a kinect-like device.

Josuey3543d ago

If kinect is so good how come microsoft dont care about it?

deadpoolio3163543d ago

Really its amazing LMAO, is that why just to sell consoles they had to remove Kinect, offer like 5 free games with it and permanently drop the price to $350.....

FYI those same voice commands which is the only thing anyone can ever come up with that makes the Kinect so amazing are also possible on PS4 with a camera that costs half as much and works twice as good

Death3543d ago

The camera is used for auto sign in when it sees you. The built in mic is the input for the OS that uses your voice for commands. While the PS4 does recognize some words, it is limited by the fact it isn't using an OS as robust as Xbox One. Keep in mind Xbox One is using 3 operating systems. This is why it is more capable in some areas.

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

Another year of this...Why couldn't they just release the game on time?

chicken_in_the_corn3h ago

Because the gaming community didn't want it to release this year. It was only delayed because of the massive amounts of pressure they were under to do so. It's been happening for years.
