I think as far as presentation goes definitely. That game just looked amazing. Going forward and tapping into hardware limitations is really going to bring this type of genre out there. There is a type of immersion one gets when playing games like these. The one thing I wish this game did was toy around more with the button prompts. I remember the entertaining struggles with heavy rain when you had to play a game of twister with your fingers when getting through certain levels. I truly hope that they make a sequel or a game that follows a similar story to what was presented in Until Dawn. Slasher story driven games fit so well with this genre.

Hoffmann3212d ago

Just imagine a studio would use the idea for a big slasher movie series of the past.

Something like the stories of Haloween, Freddy Krueger, Friday 13th etc could continue with the looks of the old actors in such a game form as example.

amiga-man3211d ago (Edited 3211d ago )

I have to say there are some moments in the game the graphics look almost real, some of the best character modelling out there, couple that with great animation and voice acting all adds up to a really believable enviroment for the game to flourish in.

Playing it today really left me amazed at how realistic the in game graphics are and bodes well for games and gamers in the future.

Hats off to Supermassive for a job well done.

_-EDMIX-_3212d ago

Agreed. Its one of the rare moments when you forget your playing a game in a good way.

The immersion is unreal with this game. I want to see just how deep they can take this genre and hope it becomes a thing! Consider we only get give or take 2 hours with a film, this game is clocking in at 9 hours of just 1 playthrough type.

Your getting a deep back story with the characters to know every one's place and how it effects the game.

Knowing someone was an ex to someone else really, really helps understand the next scenes!

I've talked about this before longer in Film with Film vs Television where Film is the art of telling you in a very short way something to convey the character to move the story along.

Television gets to do this for many, many episodes, this game does it well with the first 2 hours.

The first 2 hours which would have just been any normal film, is literally just opening up who is who and letting the knowledge of that carry over to the rest of the game.

This now becomes the staple of what we mean when folks say games are bridging that gap.

This is very much a game, with an amazing script. Some games say they have a good story...this game actually, really does.

Ask yourself in the first 2 hours of the game, did you in 2 hours of any horror film get better character development?

Did the film spend 30 minutes telling you about the history of 1 character? When stacked up against real films, this game actually does so many things BETTER then what an actual horror film would do.

This is very much bridging the game, play this game for me is coming very close to just watching a real horror for those same reason, but now I get to choice how it ends and who I want to live or die. I still can't believe just how great this game is.

A sleeper hit for sure, but I want it to be much more.

Some folks did things differently then I did too.

robtion3212d ago

Yes. Well said. Let's hope for more in the future.

OhMyGandhi3211d ago

agreed.
this game is absolutely incredible. at first, I thought so many people were selling the game as "a group of archetypes vacation to a large cabin retreat in the Canadian wilderness. Chaos ensues."
so many people made it sound like the game did nothing for the characters themselves, which I vehemently disagree with. I cared more about "the slutty idiot without a brain but steely determination" then most characters in ANY now game nowadays.

I cared more about her boyfriend, a similarly thick headed frat boy whose endearing looks and personality make up for his nonsense and horesplay.

These are not easy traits to imbue into characters that you are actually supposed to CARE about, but I found myself nervously inching forward, and thinking damned hard about my decisions, more-so then I did in a game like Heavy Rain or Indigo Prophecy, or The Wolf Among Us.

This game is incredible. It's beautiful. It has incredible lighting and a heavy atmosphere that enshrouds a location that is one of the most realized I've seen.

I have no complaints.

SoapShoes3212d ago

It has great graphics but I think The Order had better if just slightly. This uses the Killzone ShadowFall engine so it looks great. I think Uncharted 4 looks even better now in beta.

_-EDMIX-_3212d ago

Agreed. Until Dawn looks amazing and its easily a top 5 best looking game on PS4 by far, but The Order looks slightly better, but what is really better in a league of such amazing artist and on powerful hardware?

They did a great job with what they were dealt with. Crazy to think this game's life began as a PS3 Move game, but many of gaming's great titles began life as other games.

Halo an RTS, Ico was originally going to be a PS1 game etc.

kenwonobi3211d ago

I couldn't agree more. I am really hoping this game does well enough to inspire sequels or more games similar to it in its genre slasher related. This generation is perfect to show off horror games.

Chaosdreams3212d ago

It pushes immersion and story telling to a whole new level. If you want to label that as technology, go ahead.

Love the game (I hope they make more like it.) Anything Thriller/Horror + blending genres or inspirations = prime.

Would totally dig more horror though.

Totally.

_-EDMIX-_3212d ago

Agreed. I'm just such a sucker games like this. Give me a good story and I'm in. I want narrative based games to very much be a thing

Eonjay3212d ago

Its just very well crafted for what it is. They nailed the atmosphere and mocaps. I agree with @Chaosdreams. The tech was good but its really the atmosphere that they built that steals the show.

And about the genre, its nice to see games taking the horror genre seriously...angst and all. With the grit of a gory slasher.

F0XHOUND3212d ago

Its fantastic, almost reminds me of a quantic dreams game. Saying that, just wait till we get their next game, that will push the hardware to aanother level!

robtion3212d ago

Yep. Can't wait to see it soon at Paris games show.

FallenAngel19843212d ago

I can't wait to see Quantic Dream's prowess with PS4 hardware

Until Dawn Remake vs. Original Comparison Highlights If This Is A Worthy Upgrade

Until Dawn is getting a remake which always felt like an odd choice since the original still looks pretty good, is it worth the upgrade?

twistedvoxel.com
CrimsonWing6911d ago

Not really… they just couldn’t be bothered with making a sequel? This original is already available on PS5 and for the cheap. This just seems kind of pointless and I’m not seeing anything that screams next-gen remake to me, but if you’re a fan of it and looking forward to this, more power to ya’

Amplitude11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Dark Pictures Anthology games didn't exactly sell well, but they were much lower budget games that reused assets all over the place.

Its probably safe to assume that this remake - which will also presumably reuse but improve assets from the original - is a test bed to see if a high budget sequel is actually financially viable. Also brings in people who never played it when it released 9 years ago.

I'm just spit balling but it makes sense.
Ill be buying it like I do all their games haha obviously I'd rather a sequel but I totally get it.

outsider162411d ago

And of all the remakes we could have gotten, they choose this one.

MetroidFREAK2111d ago

As someone who hasn't played this before, I'll be snagging it on PS5

anast11d ago

It's a good game and it's definitely worth a purchase if you haven't played it before.

MrBaskerville10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

It's good, The Quarry is worth a look while you wait.

MetroidFREAK2110d ago

I have that on disc for PS5. That's on my backlog

Iceball200011d ago

Is there an upgrade fee for this or no? Like how TLoU had and Uncharted.

shinoff218311d ago

Even if their was. Actual work was put into this. Companies that give it away were doing it and thanked for it. Or they were doing it cause they fked up really bad Ala cyberpunk

Also you have to be mistaken cause the last of us is a straight up remake, mad work was put into that. You also didn't have buy it or anything to play the ps4 version. It was also one of the best games for awhile and it's certainly better then anything the other high end console has put out in a very long time if ever

Crows9011d ago

What other high end console?

anast11d ago

What do you do for a living? What ever it is I want you to do it for free.

cthulhucultist11d ago

Having played all Dark Pictures Anthology games as well as the Quarry, I am definitely not skipping this one.

I would even buy the original if it was on PC, since I only have a Steamdeck and a Switch.

I remember that it got surprisingly good reviewed and the Quarry has loosely the same premise as Until Dawn (not exactly the same but similar setting)

on_line_forever11d ago

Wait a minute why they use sun lights in horror game ? What's wrong with those developers ?

Even in Silent hill 2 remake bloober team use sun lights in hospital reception WHY ? The whole city is covered with fog

Really bad developers we have these days

Single-Player Titles God Of War Ragnarok & Until Dawn Will Require PSN Account On PC

Sony Interactive Entertainment's upcoming single-player PC games like God of War Ragnarok and Until Dawn will require a PSN account.

Sony will lose support and money from 177 countries that support Steam but do not support PSN!
Tell me about stupidity, I'll tell you Sony.
Its concern is to increase the number of PSN subscribers, at the expense of profit and
More sales for their games from 177 countries.

purple10112d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Thing is it’s free to create an account (for pc players)

So they don’t need essential / extra / premium tiers, there is literally no good reason. Stupid but I don’t know the ins-and-outs but I can imagine it’s just a dumb reason

Ohh actually maybe it’s to combat piracy, so the game will not launch unless you have psn, then Sonys server end would validate if it’s a real copy or a cracked one

That could be it

ApocalypseShadow12d ago

Ding ding ding. Your edit brought the answer. Lol

Sony wants to validate their games on PC so that they know who's legit and who stole them. I understand Prince in that we have too many accounts we have to make. And it's a slippery slope. Like ported Xbox games to PlayStation will require a Microsoft account. Besides the already Ubisoft accounts and Epic accounts. Hard to keep up with all these names and passwords.

But you figured it out.

blacktiger12d ago

so you are saying it's another DRM? And is it always online? even though it's single player offline game?

darthv7212d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Its free... sure. The main issue are the countries that are not on the list to select when creating the account. And I don't think Sony allows nearest neighbor, where you pick the one closest to you that is supported. People can obviously pick any country they want from the list, but that then becomes saddled to them going forward. Personally my country is supported, and I have not felt the need to change it so I dont even know if you can after the fact. If I were to move to an unsupported country... would the games even work if it detects me playing it from one when I am registered in the other?

This all stems from the whole Helldivers fiasco. Countries that support steam, and let them buy it and play only to have them cut off because their country was not officially part of the PSN account creation which was later enforced after the fact.

Andrew33612d ago

I believe every Sony single player game has leaked online the same day it releases. Needing a psn account to play the game legally isn't gonna change the fact it'll be pirated same day.

Jingsing12d ago

They'll find out sadly that most of their games are pirated, Ghosts of Tsushima over 500k people downloading it not on Steam, It sold below 70k on Steam.

ApocalypseShadow12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Black tiger, we all know games are stolen all the time on PC. Stolen to play. Stolen and emulated to play older system's games. The only way to stop it or slow it down is to have some type of security measure.

They're businesses. They have every right to protect what they make. PC gamers don't have ANY right to steal it.

There's a grey area when it comes to games purchased and the companies make your purchase unplayable through updates it closing servers. And we decide to take measures in our own hands to continue playing what was rightfully purchased by downloading it modding the code. But it's still theft.

Some gamers don't like the measures because they want the option to steal. Not everyone does. But many on PC do. That's just the reality. You can hide from the truth. But the truth is still there.

--Onilink--12d ago

What good does it do to create an account (with fake information from another country) if the game isnt released in Steam in that country anyway?

Or are you expecting people to also have to create another steam account in another country in order to link it to the PSN account they now have to make, just to be able to play Sony games?

Its a dumb and unnecessary situation, simple as that

shinoff218312d ago

You make a good point about piracy. Still weird Sony is the only one under fire about this even though they aren't alone, ea, ubisoft, Microsoft, etc. I don't know why Sony doesn't sell in those countries, but it's their prerogative.

ApocalypseShadow12d ago

I understand the account thing but you're way off on the subscriber thing.

just_looken12d ago

@prince

I agree and i see the defenders are here

Once again everyone you need real information to make a psn account so you can only have one account you loose that then you loose all your playstation digital games and have bricked consoles.

The use of programs like vpns are a banable offense to sony and like so many other companies are monitoring your chat/activity via ai bots.

You should not half to buy a game then fill out a form like your buying a gun just to play a single player game.

Every other launcher like ea/ubi/rstar/acti/blizzard/bet h You just need a email address/password acti has on some game the bs phone # crap or unless your going to buy something then yeah real info. But sony like i said you need to give everything but a nude selfie/dna sample but that will be for psvr 4 and or ps6.

Magatsuhi12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

You're full of bs. I literally just made a fake psn account in el salvador and i had no issues. All i did was google map an address and a zip code and voila, psn account. Did not need to add any personal information.

Where does it state you need ps+ to play online on steam? You're being purposefully hyperbolic and dishonest or just stupid in order to spin outrage because you hate sony for very dumb reasons.

just_looken12d ago

choo choo here comes the sony blind boys

I never said you need psplus for steam never

I also said sense 2023 again 2023

But i get it its sony they do 0 wrong

P_Bomb12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

“…you need to give everything but a nude selfie/dna sample”

Nobody wants your dna. I promise you.

badz14912d ago

"...you need real information to make a psn account so you can only have one account you loose that then you loose all your playstation digital games and have bricked consoles."

It's one thing to be a hater but it's another to be full of crap.

1. I have multiple accounts in 4 countries for several reasons. And making the PSN accounts is free.

2. Lose your account, you lose everything associated with that account? Wow...like every other accounts too? WTH are you on about?

Amplitude12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Though I agree with you it sucks to have to create an account - literally not a single thing that you said was true.

-You don't need real information.
-You can have any number of accounts.
-Its rare to lose a PSN account, but the game is still tied to Steam no matter how you slice it. Once you have it, your game can't be taken away by anybody but Valve.
-You won't be banned for playing a single player game with a VPN on.
--There is no form or ID required.
-The Sony "form" requires the exact same details as Steam. It also doesn't need a phone number.

There are very real reasons why the account requirement is bs but every other comment covers that.

Who gives a shit, they don’t want to sign up, they can always play other games and sign up to their requirements instead. You want PSN games, you sign up to PSN. Same applies to every other platform.

PhillyDonJawn12d ago

Kinda wild how Sony and MS care more about accounts/users than actual sales

TheEroica12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Sony fans don't care... They don't get the concept of why this screws gamrers over. Sony fans only know how to shill for the Corp.

fr0sty12d ago

We're too busy playing these games on our playstations to care.

jznrpg12d ago

This is extra money for them.

Giga_Gaia6d ago

I seriously doubt they'd get much sales from those countries. Sony definitely weighted all the scenarios and they quickly realized that those countries don't matter, they wouldn't bring much sales and that PSN integration would just be more beneficial.

CrimsonWing6912d ago

Are we always going to get news articles on this? Yes, any Sony game on PC now requires a PSN and won’t be accessible to regions that don’t have the PSN infrastructure.

neutralgamer199212d ago

Exactly ots not like.on PC we already have so many different launchers.

Rockstar
Ubi
Epic
Battlenet
Steam.
GOG

What's one more and I already have a PSN account

Number1TailzFan12d ago

Meh, I mean in the 90's and early 2000's some games had built in server browsers or built in lobby/chat systems like Worms 2 and it's sequels, if not we had GameSpy or Wireplay to find online players.

Multiple launchers is kind of annoying though, TBH I would prefer just one..

just_looken12d ago

If you read the 2023 psn terms of service but this is sony so i know 90% here did not this is a pc killer.

Not only do you need real information so one account no way to make a dummy account and they need your address/real name some countries a drivers license but they also use ai to monitor you.

In there terms they are checking your ip address as the use of VPN's is against the terms and programs that cheat are also bannable but in the list they think 3rd party antivitus is cheating.

So yeah paying for god of war then filing out a form like your going to buy a gun just to play the thing to me sound's stupid but i am not a sony blindboy.

neutralgamer199212d ago

Looken

I didn't know that. It sucks and I for one will be very watchful of what I buy in the future from Playstation on PC. It's like Sony can't stay out of its own way when it comes to success of their games

hiroyukisanada12d ago

Why is this a problem? Just curious. Don't you need accounts for Steam, Xbox, Gog, Epic Games,EA, Blizzard,etc..? Why is it a problem if you need PSN?

darthv7212d ago

There are close to 200 countries around the world. MS is supported in 98%, Steam 90%. Sony... less than 50%.

Grilla12d ago

You guys keep crying about these 177 3rd world countries.

CrimsonWing6912d ago

How much of a % do these 177 countries equate to Sony’s overall sales by region?

InUrFoxHole12d ago

@Crimson
Would you say this is more pro or anti consumer?

romulus2312d ago

LOL, I saw the list of countries that aren't supported by PSN, I don't think Sony has anything to worry about with any of them. These aren't the kinds of places where game consoles and games are selling significantly enough to matter anyway. Just certain people are trying to blow this out of proportion.

Hofstaderman12d ago

Trust me in those countries its cheaper to buy a console than build or buy a pc that can run ps5 games. Taxes and import duties are a real killer for graphics cards etc.

Giga_Gaia12d ago

The countries where PSN isn't supported definitely wouldn't move the needle in term of sales. In the end, they don't really matter. You can bet Sony did the math and have a lot more data than some stupid fanboys like you people.

just_looken12d ago

@buff

Its funny you can tell the Americans so much now

Japan is part of the list sony has banned ghost of tsumia pc version people in japan wtf? every American meh im fine with this as they give sony all ther information.

Not to mention in alot of countries that this game is supported you still have issues with getting a valid working address then the whole information that they need. I would never give sony my govt id fuck that.

staticall12d ago

IMO, because it's a dumb requirement. Steam already has DRM built-in and it's working fine. And affected games are offline singleplayer games. This requirement doesn't help the players, only Sony stats.

Does this make tbe game better? No. Does this help the player or does it improve their experience? Also no. So why is this required? Just cause. So why anyone defends this again?!

just_looken12d ago

All those compaines need a email/password that is it oh your ea account got banned well unlink that one from steam make another relink sesne the game is on steam.

Sony need You email address password first/last name home phone home address/postal proof of age location country and ip address then will monitor you 24/7. You will also need payment information on console for ps +

You can only have one psn account sense it need's your real info in some countries it needs a attached govt id.

Your psn account gets banned then all these games are dead to you and your playstaion consoles are bricked sense you need a psn account/ps + to go online/get updates etc

You can not make a new account sense it will say hey you already have that info on this account that is banned sorry gtfo.

Psychonaut8513d ago

Really don’t understand why they remade this. Good game. Pointless remake

BlackCountryBob13d ago

I went back to the original PS4 game recently and it surprised me how dark and textureless some of the environments are compared to the newer games like The Quarry as my memory has all these games looking basically the same. To me the video does seem a solid visual upgrade, I wouldn’t spend £70 but if this was £30 with some new story elements akin to a Directors cut, I think I’d bite for a Halloween replay through
