Say what you want about Gears of War with its brown, war-torn environments and chest-high walls, but it defined a genre of third-person shooters that several developers have copied ad nauseam, and it is one of the Xbox’s crowning series. It’s only fitting that Microsoft give Gears of War the remastered treatment, even though it’s strange that they only remastered the first game instead of the entire series or just the Marcus Fenix trilogy (I think most Gears fans want to pretend Gears of War: Judgment never existed, even those of us who love Baird). Then again, perhaps Microsoft didn’t want to risk another server problem they’ve had with Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Regardless, a remastered version of the first Gears of War is what we have, and what a thing of beauty it is. Well, if war-torn brown environments with splatters of red can be beautiful, the Gears of War Ultimate Edition is as beautiful as it gets.
