DICE acknowledges Media Molecule’s Dreams for pushing the boundaries of real-time rendering

During SIGGRAPH 2015, Frostbite Technical director at DICE Johan Andersson conducted a presentation on the future of the graphics engine. He talked in detail regarding the rendering pipeline, and the challenges met with development on the current generation platforms. In addition to EA’s own Need for Speed title, the presentation briefly acknowledges the technology that Media Molecule has used for its forthcoming title, Dreams. The slide is titled "real-time rendering have gotten quite far!"

This is a perfect example of the freedom and innovation Sony gives their 1st party studios, Sony have never been afraid to push the boudaries and it's gamers that win.

Looking forward to seeing more of this extraordinary game.

MrSec843589d ago (Edited 3589d ago )

So true!
People always bash them, but the real reason that Playstation home console's sell so well and why Sony has never had a dud in the sales department is because they deliver the games that the largest audience wants to play.

Dreams looks amazing and the fact that many are intrigued by it speaks to Media Molecule for their ability to entertain and create unique and appealing content.
Dreams is going to be way more than just a game creation platform, it's built for everyone to either create anything digitally or for non-creative types to just experience, whether that means playing a game or just watching or looking at something they've never seen before.

It's a platform that will constantly grow and always give people something to enjoy, whether it's the studio's own content or the community's.

God only knows what the other studios at WWS have been making, that is yet to be announced.
I suspect we'll be seeing much of that at the various events Sony has coming up this year.

Variety will be available for all to see!

bouzebbal3588d ago

Many people don't realize how talented and extremely creative Media Molecule are.
We don't know what dreams is about, same way i had no idea what LBP was about, but after LBP and Tearaway i have full faith in these guys..

Genuine-User3589d ago

Same. The possibilities are almost endless with this one.

Ron_Danger3589d ago

Time for my once a year troll comment:

"Same. The possibilities are almost endless with this one."

Just imagine if it was cloud powered!! The destruction in Dreams would be crazy!!

***** ewwww gross.... Trolling done!!

But seriously, Dreams looks insane and considering you can make movies, Pixar and Dream Works have some competition coming from regular joes!

lvl_headed_gmr3589d ago

It does look interesting, but I thought the same thing about Little Big Planet when it was new and fresh and I ended up hating it.

I'm going to wait and maybe buy it used when it's cheap.

FBNS3589d ago

Or, support a new idea. It's okay to be wrong or not like something. You only hurt yourself in the long run. I mean, either way it's up to you the way you internalize and perceive. Open or close minded. Take that chance.

nix3589d ago

Dreams is LBP on drugs. Imagination is going to be as large as the amount of drugs you've consumed. q;

Aloy-Boyfriend3589d ago

LBP was awesome and so is tearaway. I loev LBP for the crazy levels people came up with. I mean, Black ops Zombies, Final Fantasy VII, Mass Effect 3, and some fkin Shark level that was impossible yet fun to play? Man Media Molecule did contribute big time with this series to the industry. I hope Dreams also delivers

Killustrious3588d ago

It looks interesting and I love LBP so I'm intrigued to see what this game EXACTLY is. I have a general idea of it but their E3 presentation didn't make it 100% known what it's all about... I'm definitely interested to see and learn more about it because I know Media Molecule is easily one of the most innovative developers out there.

The Siggraph pictures showed how awesome this game is going to look and the variety of things you can create. This is going to be awesome, can't wait for PGW.

I 2ould just love to one day pick brains od those who work at media molecules. it's like they think so much out of the box that there is no box that they fit in lol

can't wait to find out more about dreams

lemoncake3589d ago (Edited 3589d ago )

An influence of Peter molyneux perhaps, he used to be very good at either picking talented people or moulding them or bit of both.

lemoncake3589d ago (Edited 3589d ago )

They used to work for him at lionhead, and he was more or less their mentor in early days. You lot really don't know your gaming history? Guess the disagrees and genuine comment confirm that, lol so much ignorance.

You might hate molyneux but you deep down cannot deny he produced/found some really good talent back in the day.

If u want examples go google it, I am not your personal Google machine, there are tons on there.

the founder of media molecule for example Mark Healey is ex lionhead, google it if you don't believe.

Genuine-User3589d ago (Edited 3589d ago )

"They used to work for him at lionhead"

4 people out of an entire studio to be precise.

"and he was more or less their mentor in early days"

Give us a few examples.

"You lot really don't know your gaming history? Guess the disagrees and genuine comment confirm that, lol so much ignorance."

Hold your horses, do you know the history of every designer/director in the gaming industry?

"You might hate molyneux but you deep down cannot deny he produced/found some really good talent back in the day."

I don't hate Molyneux, but I do believe that he's a convincing liar.

"moredisagrees lol such gaming history ignorance"

Get off your high horse.

lemoncake3589d ago (Edited 3589d ago )

@genuine comments : It's sad when the obvious troll gets agreed with, that's n4g for u.

Is being ex bullfrog and lionhead and having an association with molyneux really perceived that badly by gamers today? Personally it's one of reasons I am so interested in this developer, maybe people here weren't gamers or born during the bullfrog and lionhead great years? meh.

AndrewLB3588d ago

@Genuine-User

To be fair, Peter Molyneux has been making video games since the dawn of personal computing in the early 1980's and is quite well known. I remember him particularly due to him being one of the first victims of Electronic Arts when his studio, Bullfrog, was bought in the late 80's, disassembled, and destroyed. Not long after the same happened to Origin Systems (Richard Garrett of Ultima fame and Chris Roberts who needs no introduction).
Lionhead was his second studio and created the game Black & White which was quite revolutionary for it's time, and this caught Microsoft's attention who bought the studio and made him Director of Microsoft Games. All in all, he's had quite an exceptional career.

As for what Lemoncake said... I highly doubt he really knew much about Molyneux and his comment looks like he parroted it from some fluff press release. Unless you were gaming in the 80's and early 90's, chances are you have no idea who this man is.

Shuhei Yoshida: A Mix of Technical and Business Reasons Held Dreams Back from PC, Mobile

Dreams had potential but it really needed to get off of the PS4. It released so late in the gen when everyone was already wanting to move on to next gen systems. It should have come to PC, and a native PS5 version should have definitely released.

Knushwood Butt132d ago

I bought it Day 1 but the 'campaign' was pretentious and just didn't work for me. I had no intention of making content so was left to fumble through the user created content. Some good stuff, with the pig detective being the most memorable. However, just moved on to other stuff, and despite owning VR, never once played in VR either.

Knushwood Butt132d ago

Media Molecule always seem to be too ahead of the curve to have a big hit. Hopefully whatever they are working on now finds a big audience.

YoungKingDoran132d ago

For whatever reason/s they somehow dropped the ball hard with Dreams, our loss

Lionsguard132d ago

Dreams was fantastic, especially when VR was added. The things people managed to build was incredible. Some of the best VR experiences are still from Dreams experiences. The huge crux for it was being on consoles however and it was missing one thing that they didn't have back then and that we have now..... A.I.. With the advent of AI today, if they could have had Dreams running on PC and somehow got AI to work where we just typed in a prompt and it did things, it would have been a massive game changer, it could have just made the AI "Dream" and create its own things. It could have solved their problem of somehow getting one dream to just change into another one seamlessly. I really think Dreams deserves a second chance.

Rancegamerx132d ago

It was an awesome idea but even with tools that were supposed to make it easier to make a game, it was still so hard and convoluted. It tried to do to much at once. It would have been better to separate everything into easier parts, build the world, then the character's, then the music, etc. Not everything all at once. Some people understood it but most were overwelmed or confused.

I have to emphasize that this is an extremly well made remake, it's the full game with all the content and features plus more. Visuals and sound is very close to the original, this version was recently published. I know there's a lot of predjudice against Dreams, which is a shame and not really deserved, the tool is much more capable than many think.

fr0sty242d ago

Just a reminder that Dreams is free on PS+ Premium... if you have it, go download it, and thank us later. It's a truly fantastic game.

If there was one PC version that should have existed it’s Dreams

I’m super glad they will be going back to something more traditional gaming wise.

Cacabunga406d ago

I’m sure they’ll find something creative to implement like Tearaway on vita. What a gem 💎 that thing was!!!

Abear21406d ago

My dream was DreamsVR and creating landscapes, characters, and sculptures using that amazing toolbox in vr, that would have been something imo.

ocelot07406d ago

I thought It has vr support?

Amplitude406d ago

It did but it came out as an update LONG after the game was essentially dead

P_Bomb406d ago

Dreams PC was the dream. Woulda given the game a much needed boost. Here’s hoping they follow it up well.

phoenixwing406d ago

If sony had any sense they'd be making a pc version pronto

mkis007406d ago

They probably ran into the same problem they did with the potential of last of us factions....the support needed was just too much to consider expanding to more platforms for a smallish studio.

Abnor_Mal406d ago (Edited 406d ago )

I use to say this when the game was first releasing, many kept saying it would not be possible, something about the toolsets.

I said this was one game that needed to be on as many platforms as possible, including PC and Xbox just like how Minecraft is everywhere.

Goodguy01406d ago

Creation tools just don't work on console very well. It's definitely more suited for PC, and it's very odd Sony decided not to port it over. Good MM is working on an actual game instead.
