Bond OO7 from the DRM Gamecast lays out the pros and cons of achievements and trophies on both gamers and the industry.
I find them interesting because they increase the meta game nature of the software. Gives me a reason to replay some games, or in other cases actually buy some cheap games just to earn them.
They are good for trying things I wouldn't think of in games. But I would never buy a game to just get them...
They make a game more motivating for me! I remember playing through games again on PS3 because they got patched trophies!
There's great and horrible examples just like anything, some challenge you do do things you would have otherwise never tried and turn out to add quite a bit to the game, while others are just stressful and nothing more than a half assed answer to content, i mean seriously how often does collecting some absurd amount of collectables lead up to anything other than a lame ass trophy? how about unlocking something i can actually use!
They should turn gamerscore /trophies into currency that you can spend in the marketplace. That's what I thought they were for when I first got a 360 lol
XBL rewards actually partially does just that. There are different tiers, dependant upon your gamerscore, which enable you to receive more points and cash back per digital purchase. OT: I enjoy them, but I also have an addictive personality which used to lead me to playing games in a way that reduced my enjoyment of them significantly by trying to get all of the achievements/trophies in the first playthrough. I'd constantly restart checkpoints to farm kills, etc... I now just get whatever achievements/trophies unlock through naturally playing the game, and then I'll go back and hunt the remaining down. Much more enjoyable for me that way.
I find somethings that i didn't find in my first play through. For example, MGS4. It didn't have trophies before but they introduced me into lots of new things in the game.
I like em.. that's all that matters to me. :)
There is no con. If it's not your thing... then don't chase them.
I like earning trophies, though I dont have many platinums because a lot of them are a tedious task to get, but I do at least try to get games I finish to at least 67% trophies earned (2/3).
Neither, they're an extra option for those who care for them.
I like them, though I'm not addicted to them like some, though there is nothing wrong with that.
It gives me a initiative to trying something I normally would not try. I enjoy collecting them. I was that kid in school who would go that extra mile for that gold star under their name.
Have completed more games that have trophies then I did in generations before without. I only have 28 platinums but most of them are probably games I wouldn't of completed, I'm just 3 online trophies away from TLOU plat and 2 GTA online trophies away from the plat. Would never of done most of the stuff I have done on both of these without trophies, which has added the value to me.
I think they are great, adds loads of replay to games. After I finish the story I always go back and try and do all the achievments
They are ok, but when I've gone through a game & enjoyed it, I'm not then gonna go through it to search for things on the floor for the sake of a trophy. If I go through it again it's because it's a great game & I want to play it again & if I happen to come by anything towards a trophy of course I'd pick it up, but never would I trophy hunt.
