Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’s Character Artist Gives Pointers on How to Get Into The Industry

Making a living working on video games is a common dream about gamers, but it’s not an easy or quick career to get into. At times, the best way to get pointers is to listen to those who made it.

Naughty Dog Character Artist Glauco Longhi, currently working on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, is one of such men, and he gave a few pieces of advice during a lecture at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects in Hollywood.

Naughty Dog has quite possibly the finest collection of developers (for 1 studio) in the entire industry. Simply the best of the best.

Bruce Straley is so awesome, i love his spirit and enthusiasm, he is a pure gamer through and through. Bruce and Druck make a dynamic duo.

Their visual effects artists and their animators are second to none.

I feel like what makes them so great is they are incredibly collaborative and really love doing what they do. Every single video I have seen they always end up talking about how great everyone is working together and how much passion they put into their work.

Its simply incredible what they achieve.

Totally agree...they also work together so well because they seem to constantly be in competition w/ themselves rather than reacting to outside influences. They have said on numerous occasions that they are very free about pushing themselves into interesting new directions and never being satisfied with "good enough".

At the end of the day, the momentum will keep them high because the best talent want to work w/ the best developer, but I think Sony has a big hand in making the studio what it is today by allowing them the freedom to just create. This is the issue w/ AAA game development these days, whereas the vast majority of brass dictating to the devs treat it like a pure business, guys like Naughty Dog treat it as it should be treated: an artform. Really the same way the best indie devs operate as they aren't beholden to some corporate jerk forcing release dates & bad practices upon them, so they get to develop out of pure love of the craft and that always shines through as an intangible feeling in the games themselves. More publishers need to get on this train and be unafraid to take risks and just allow devs to take the full creative reins. We wouldn't see so many half-assed & broken retail titles if more devs were afforded the freedom that ND are.

That is awesome and an Ideal way to get in, not the way a certain figure got in, I won't mention any names, I am only a 'misogynist pig' (Not really though)

Naughty Dog seems to be the best dev to work for, I still remember the dev vids from Uncharted 1, wish I could say the same for Konami.

Once again, Naughty Dog are the best developers in gaming. The most talented studio I've ever seen.
