Why do we play video games when we're not enjoying them?

Tom from GamersFTW writes: " "I never play a video game when I’m not enjoying it!” That, and variations of, are the dismissive replies that I fully expect in response to the titular question. But, if we’re being honest, is that always true? And if we’re not enjoying ourselves whilst revelling in our collective hobby, why do we carry on playing? I put on my philosophical hat to consider some of the reasons why we play games when we’re not enjoying them: the good, the bad and the ugly."

I kond of feel that if you start something it needs to be finished regardless of whether it is any good or not

I'm the opposite, life is to short and my gaming time is shorter to waste my time on a bad game. I'll get that twinge of OCD about not finishing it, but my memory is short enough to where I get over it quickly lol.

Edit: not all the games I've ditched are bad, some are actually well made, but I just can't get into them.

I think it's built into us. Similar to when you're young and told to clear your dinner or no deserts! If you don't finish it - no new game!

How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!

Lol I think you might be onto something there. :)

I always try to finsh the games I start, even when they're no good at all! Don't ask me why though...

Just good games then? Lol

Joystickero1619d ago

Well, I've started several games that seemed cool only to find out after a couple hours that they aren't. In those cases I still try to finish them.

This refers more like to multiplayer games(pvp), just look all the rants there are on youtube i think all of them comes from multiplayer online games and this is very true, yes multiplayer can be very addicitive but is fun ? Is more like no then yes, cause when playing online theres this kinda compete feeling that makes you be always on your toes hence be very stressed, sometimes this stress leads to desperation then this leads to affliction then probably anger, you can be very good at multiplayer but this doesn't excludes you from being stress unless you are againts a bunch noobs so it would be party all the time, i think the gamers that have more fun in online games are the actual trolls cause their main purpose is to annoy the other gamer lol.

But in general i think we play games cause we want just to have fun, for me thats main reason and if the game has great vsuals this converts to an awesome experience.

Probably because we're addicted.
