Phil Spencer talked about the importance of games to Windows, and their strategy going forward.
I'm glad to hear that Spencer is doing a lot for games on Windows. After Halo Wars 2 I want Age of Empires IV though!
Damn, you took the words right out of my mouth. An Age of Empires game that sticks to its roots and I'm all taken by Microsoft.
Imagine what could be done with DirectX 12...Finally, real battles
Decisive games (a new MS studio) is currently working on an RTS and I'm guessing it's either going to be Age of Empires or Age of Mythology.both games are great.
I like mythology but I prefer history.
another age on PC, either history or Mythology is fine with me. Cross play with XB1 would be cool too, I guess.
Can't stop loving this guy. It will take a considerable amount of time for the Xbox One to catch up to the PS4 on the sales chart, but if Spencer keeps doing what he is doing, and only continues to do better, it won't be long before people start to chose the Xbox One because of the video game content and all the good features it offers. Sony is improving on its end, but I don't know why I feel like the company which once treated gamers with gratitude is now all about making money, and the one that was all about making money is not now understanding its fans and doing better.
As long as Sony and Microsoft motivate one another to keep improving through competition, we will reap the results.
That's absolutely true, competition is great for us.
''but I don't know why I feel like the company which once treated gamers with gratitude is now all about making money,'' Lol I guess being in the lead and marketing the hell out of the PS4 makes Sony care only about money... Why do you feel like that? Every company wants your money, obviously. It's what motivates them to do all of this. Making games is the way they treat us with gratitude for purchasing their product, and last time I checked Sony hasn't stopped releasing games.
Frisky, can you imagine if this man was here from the get go... Jesus, best thing that has happened to xbox in years. Love this guy.
@Frisky- "It will take a considerable amount of time for the Xbox One to catch up to the PS4 on the sales chart, but if Spencer keeps doing what he is doing, and only continues to do better, it won't be long before people start to chose the Xbox One because of the video game content" I heard none of that with any of his latest interviews. Its showing that he cares not of a sales lead, its clear to him and most of MS's heads that its not likely and thus they are selling games on both PC and XONE. Its not about selling XONE anymore as this center focal point of gaming for them, or as they stated "plastic box". They are trying to make more money on software and focus on making great software on both XONE and PC vs trying to just sell folks on XONE solely. That doesn't translate into XONE selling more, it merely translates into more of its games going to PC...thus actually making it sell less then it likely would have without the move. But in that result, it still helps MS more, folks buying those games on PC, is better then them buying zero of them and not getting an XONE. Its been shown over and over again the bulk of sales from consoles don't even come from folks seeking to buy only exclusive content, in fact no game on either XB or PS has even sold a fraction of its install base, which means MOST don't buy systems for that sole purpose. Granted, some do, clearly not ALL or even most as the games sales sorta show its not the reason for the purchase. MS can do this as they have a investment in PC and why not? How many XONE's where they really going to sell with some of those exclusives? To MS, I think they see it as a game doing 10 million on combined on PC and XONE is better then if it just did 7 million on XONE and the rest didn't get a XONE to buy it. ie the extra 3 million or so who might have gotten a XONE for it really might have not gotten it while it being on PC gets them the sale and opens them up for a bigger market to sell software then Nintendo and Sony (well next gen content anyway) and he already stated he's not thinking of XONE beating PS4 in sales. Its sorta clear thats likely never going to happen this gen if not ever in any gen after this move. This move is really only bad for XB fanboys as they are the only ones that keep trying to defend the exclusive on MS platforms as if that matters to MS. What matters to MS is making money and hardware is not making that much money and again exclusives are barely proven to sell consoles as the sales of those games don't support the theory. Hell look at GTAV!!! Best selling game last gen...not an exclusive. Thus....are 35 million really buying Halo day 1? Buying GT day 1? Buying any exclusive day 1? Thus...did they really buy a XB or PS to really JUST play that? Some did, yes, not MOST. That theory is getting old and clearly its getting costly for MS. This is good for gamers and good for MS, they get to bank on 2 platforms vs just 1, I don't see many not buying an XONE because of this move, how many are huge PC gamers with ultra rigs? I mean...those few might not get the XONE, but I'm sure many still game on console so its no biggie to them and really shouldn't be.
Supporting PC and Xbox is by no means bad for Xbox owners. Having an install base consisting of PC and Xbox owners makes development much more attractive than a relatively small user base. The only ones that can be hurt from this merger is fans of other platforms that don't have access to the content created for Xbox and Windows 10. I think the assumption you and others like you make is that PC gamers will play Xbox exclusives on PC and then buy a PS4 to satisfy their console cravings. That would make sense if there wasn't synergy being built between Xbox and PC.
Well said, bubble for you.
@Death- "Supporting PC and Xbox is by no means bad for Xbox owners" ...I know...its way I stated this. "This move is really only bad for XB fanboys" - EDMIX and "This is good for gamers and good for MS" - EDMIX "I think the assumption you and others like you make is that PC gamers will play Xbox exclusives on PC and then buy a PS4 to satisfy their console cravings"- You lolz "I don't see many not buying an XONE because of this move" Where did you get that I assumed that? "but I'm sure many still game on console so its no biggie to them and really shouldn't be" Soooo no where did I say anything about PC and PS combo, that is my set up yes, but what I'm saying has nothing to do with my personal setup. Those that game on PC, will keep gaming on PC, those that favor console...will still keep doing just that, hell if you even read a little of what I was saying, you'll know that I stated that I don't' believe exclusives are selling the platform solely, thus...those that are gaming, are gaming on consoles based on games that can be purchased on PC anyway, ie GTAV, BF, COD etc. Though I have the PS, PC combo and clearly I"m not changing that due to this news, I don't speak for all gamers as I stated once again.. "I don't see many not buying an XONE because of this move how many are huge PC gamers with ultra rigs? I mean...those few might not get the XONE, but I'm sure many still game on console so its no biggie to them and really shouldn't be" Thus...by default they will lose sales from XONE, clearly someone is not buying it based on this news, but its not THAT much that it would hurt MS that badly as again..how many are even buying consoles for in house exclusives? Look at the numbers, they are going to lose some sales, but not really by that much as what XB exclusive is giving them like 30 million units?
Sooo stop actually assuming what you think I actually mean. Mind you...what I'm saying is that XONE gamers will still play XONE, those that want to buy XONE will still buy XONE, those that game on console will still game on console. I mean...I made it pretty clear with my above post that move is merely to sell software as they are not just in the game of selling hardware and focusing on hardware as they themselves stated this. Never did I state anything about all XONE console owners just buying PS4's and PC's..I mean did Gears 1, Fable III, Alan Wake etc not come to PC last gen? This move won't convert folks to PC, but it very might get some highend folk to not get a XONE if they own a PC, but like I stated, that is far and a few and exclusives are not putting folks on consoles in the huge mega millions, thus...even if they didn't get an XONE for a exclusive title...MOST are not getting it because of that, thus why sell it based on that concept if they have PC to support? Look at GTA,look at COD, look at BF...someone is buying a console version of that by choice based on wanting to play it on console. Console will always get gamers, period. If you get the attach rate with exclusives to consoles, then you clearly get that I'm not assuming PC and PS4 combo. PS4 is not just selling well solely based on exclusives, 3rd parties play the best on console, the price, controller, Japanese support, trusted first party etc but its NOT solely on just Sony published games....no Sony published game is pushing 40 or 50 million units. Stop assuming what you think I mean and just read what I actually really mean lol. What I'm saying doesn't even support your theory, it goes against it...
Damn, you pretty much nailed it.
I see a great future for gaming on Windows 10 & Xbox.
I feel like MS will eventually stop making consoles and unify xbox under PC.
I was really hoping gears was cross play between PC and X1 :( oh well
I see what they did there, the install base is lower then its competitor with Xbox one to PS4.. But PC with Microsoft having a 1.25 billion install base. Microsoft must been saying to themselves, we have our own infrastructure and install base but we are not taking full advantage of all the potential customers on windows PC.. http://www.businessinsider....
^ Someone see the bigger picture here, It will be just called the MS platform (AKA Window platform). Why restricted your self to a single device?
100% agree with BOTH! Some don't want to see it that way and don't really get that its about money at the end of the day. I mean...how many games will either of us buy this year? 7 maybe, 5? Now....consider those 5 games will make those publisher MORE MONEY then MS or Sony would get from a single console sale. They might make a small profit, but the real money is in software, this has been known in gaming for eons. They've stated too that they don't want to have a plastic device at their center. http://www.polygon.com/2015... Its about software and selling software where they can make money. Many don't like hearing that, but MS doesn't care about restricting a system to get more sales when that would mean less money for MS by having content only on 1 platform vs 2 and when those sales don't even bring that much money in. MS had lots of games on PC last gen yet they still sold plenty of 360's, I feel they might have regretted not going full force on being multiplatform when they had the chance. http://www.cinemablend.com/... They are not even near done, they seem to have plans for other titles too. The only thing stopping the games from gamescom from being on PC was actually just timing of development, had Phil been head of XB when those games where first being made, they likely would have been with PC in mind, but its clear he can't just stop them to do that, so they will likely get ported over after the fact, won't be the first time and they do a pretty good job with bring titles over. But from here on out, I see them being multiplatform and I think its just a genius move.
It looks to me that Microsoft is moving away from hardware and turning xbox live into a service (Netflix like service). To ease gamers to go from buying a product to paying a service, Microsoft is releasing xbox one exclusives on both Windows 10 and xbox one with cross platform play. The next step will be to release xbox one games on Windows pjones/tablets. So instead of buying a console all gamers will pay for xbox live and play Microsoft games on all Windows devices (phones, tablets, pc, etc). After all Microsoft makes more profit from xbox live than xbox one.
Not all titles are cross platform, QB, Scalebound and a few others are not even announced for Windows, sure you can stream them to PC but what's the point when you need your console powered on as well as your PC? Also not everyone has a gaming PC either and a lot of tablets cannot run those games (unless you are willing to spend way more than a console would cost on one), Can't see them dropping consoles just yet myself.
"Not all titles are cross platform, QB, Scalebound and a few others are not even announced for Windows" Not yet. http://www.cinemablend.com/... For Scalebound and QB.. "Going to those teams mid-cycle and saying: ‘Hey, by the way, I want to add a platform,’ didn’t really feel like necessarily the best way to end up with the best result for the game" and "whereas with, like, Halo Wars 2 I had the opportunity from the beginning, when we’re sitting down with the studio, to say, ‘Here’s the target. Here’s what we wanna go do." So...not only is he confirming its not do to them not wanting it, he is stating that if he had the chance from the start of its development (as Phil was not head then) he would likely have made it on PC at the same time. He is not stating never, he is not stating those are to sell XONE's... He even in an interview stated " When we say 'putting gamers at the center,' that's different than putting a piece of plastic or a specific device at the center." ie they are not holding games off from PC, to sell XONEs...its not about a "piece of plastic" and the actions being done by Phil sorta show that. Again...he is not saying some titles will never go, he didn't even deny it, he just flat out stated that he had a chance early with Halo Wars 2 and didn't with Scalebound and QB....as if to say if he did, they would be up there being announced on PC already. " It’s not to say those games could never come to Windows" Its not being ruled out and its clear Windows and XONE are being seen as one in the same for MS focus. What they are saying, what they are doing very much shows this. "Can't see them dropping consoles just yet myself" I agree, I don't see them doing that, but I don't see them fully, exclusively supporting it any longer either, especially after those interviews with Phil and the recent PC announcements. http://www.polygon.com/2015... and " Also not everyone has a gaming PC either and a lot of tablets cannot run those game" They can stream which PS does and Steam does too. Also, your right...not everyone has a gaming PC, but not everyone has a XONE, PS4, Wii U etc...your point? MS is seeking to make money on PC, clearly enough own them for them to factor that into this decision to support it along with XONE as suppose to just XONE. You'll buy many games this year, if your lucky you only have to buy a console once a gen... Who is getting paid more money, MS or the publishers providing the game? Its 5 games a year vs 1 system a gen.... Clearly...they get they can make more money on software everywhere vs just XONE by itself. PC will make MS money.
Well consoles are pretty much done, they lack an identity (no exclusive genre that defines consoles). The hardware of today's consoles is outdated. The new phones/tablets are going to be 8 core 4 gigs of ram and capable of running at 4K. Asus Zenfone 2 is able to record video at 4K. Multimedia apps run better or equal to consoles on mobile devices. PlayStation Now can only grow and succeed if it starts streaming PS4 games. The writing is on the wall already, consoles had a great run but it will be PlayStation Now plus Xbox Live services being the next generation consoles.
@Edmix But that is still no guarantee of them going to PC is it? As I said they have not been announced for PC, linking to speculation is not a fact :)
Tablets etc. will only stay a certain size so they are limited by what can go in them. Consoles that are not developed yet i.e. the next gen as you said can be built with multi GPU's etc. in the chassis tablets do not have the luxury of space in that respect. I think we will have at least one or more gen of consoles before they can become obsolete.
I actually believe Phil is trying harder for games on Windows unlike the other 10 years of announcements (just that talk and no action) from MSoft regarding that they will support the PC platform (Windows PC) more with games. Interesting times ahead.
