The Witcher 3 patch 1.08 boosts console performance

Digital Foundry:
As a summary of where things stand, Microsoft's machine continues to give the smoothest performance of the two, though it's shorn of the true, native 1080p output seen on PS4. It's also fair to say both could use additional refinement on a technical level, and that after so many false dawns the likelihood of a major break-through in performance is growing increasingly smaller. But three months on from The Witcher 3's original release, at least patch 1.08 puts us back on track.

Update:

Update: Disabling post-processing improves PS4 frame-rates still further, video analysis added.

I can definitely confirm the patch makes the game run the best its ever run.

From the video is not so much gain in terms of performance, at least on PS4.

X1 version sees some gaines, but this is due to the disabling of the double buffer that was implemented in the 1.07 patch.

But my question is why they do not eliminate the double buffer from the PS4 version as well.

Does it have to do with the marketing deal that MS had with CDPR?

"Does it have to do with the marketing deal that MS had with CDPR?"

I really hope not because marketing deals shouldn't do that at all.

:I

I honestly don't believe that's true BTW. Its probably due to the developers struggling with the PS4s hardware for some reason. Maybe they thought they could just copy and paste the XB1 version over but I don't really about that either.

@MasterConrnholio

"Struggling with PS4 hardware"

Funny to say this, thinking that the majority of the games have better resolution AND better frame rate (F1 and Project Cars are the latest two).

Nonetheless, my question is very simple.

If CDPR can disable the double buffering in X1 version, why they are not switching OFF on the PS4 version?

thekhurg1631d ago

It's pathetic that CDPR still hasn't addressed the double buffering in the PS4 version. That issue has been there since the game launched. Nobody likes it and nobody wants it.

MasterCornholio1631d ago (Edited 1631d ago )

I understand what your saying perfectly. And while it's well known that the PS4 is really easy to develop for some developers might struggle with it for some reason.

Anyways what you said about them turning off that buffering method is true though. Like they proved with the X1 version all they have to do is flip the switch. So I'm assuming the same is true with the PS4 version.

But why won't they do it?

I have no idea. It could be because of the marketing deal or if could be because performance would be a lot worse without it. But I really don't know. This is a question best left to the developers to answer.

@the

I agree you as well. Nobody likes it when the game locks its framerate at 20FPS.

dantesparda1631d ago

These guys suck, they been struggling to fix this games performance since day one and here we are 3 months later and many attempts after and they still are unable to. First it was AF being lowered, then the unlocked framerate with all the frame pacing issues. Still with the what looks like double buffering causing the lock to 20fps on the PS4 (that they seem to refuse to take off). And it looks like they are lowering effects on the PS4 too. Just look at the grass movement and missing fog on this video at 1:20 https://www.youtube.com/wat...

They cant even fix that 1 frame drop in Novigrad while horseback riding. These guys suck at this and are a letdown, this game is a mess performance wise on both system, just moreso on the PS4.

LastNewtStandin1631d ago

I would assume the double buffer stays to enable the 1080p resolution.

That seems to be the difference in the two versions right?

Yup, I noticed after the patch that the game is running much smoother on my ps4.

1nsomniac1631d ago (Edited 1631d ago )

I didn't notice it at all while playing but on that video I can certainly see 1.08 is blurrier than 1.05.

Strange that the video shows 1.05 still runs better albeit by a single frame in most sections when there is any differentiation except in certain parts.

Good patch though, at least it's not the mess it once was.

Hasswell-NeverCold1631d ago

That 1.07 on xbox one is pretty bad. It is totally playable at 30 fps but to drop 20 at points.. My 760 maintains mostly 40.. but if I put on that hair thing on it is 30 to 40. Anyway, what ever the fps, it's a great game and I'm still in my first run because I do most of the side missions.

Infact, I remember Dragon age inquisition at some points was harder on my machine even though the recommended requirements are much lower than in W3.
