Mobile game publishers really don’t seem to follow the same kind of release patterns as they do in other wings of the industry, which is why Android sees great games being released at just about any time of the year. This month has been no different and brought among the throng of new Android releases, a nice cache of superb titles. As usual we have picked the five most hardcore of the bunch so you don’t have to sort through the mess yourself.

There is something engrossing about the concept of humanity’s last stand against an alien threat; it boils away all else to put us face-to-face with our own indomitable mortality. Legions of Steel takes this concept, of humans fighting an overwhelming alien force called the Machines, and squanders it in an attempt to revive an aging strategy board game. Utilizing a solid foundation, Legions of Steel aspires to do absolutely nothing with it; instead showcasing a translation of turn-based strategy that, amid the backdrop of excellent strategy games released in the past decade, does nothing new or unique. At best, Legions of Steel presents you with a moderate challenge as you work your way through its handful of levels. At worst, it is an exhausting and unimaginative journey through a galaxy devoid of personality.

Legions of Steel is the digitized version of a tabletop wargame from the 90’s, along the vein of games like Warhammer 40k and Epic. In the Legions of Steel universe, a phyrexian-like race of machinery has gained a foothold in the galaxy and is spreading like a plague, invading swiftly across known space. This leaves the more meat-bag-inclined species of the known world no choice but to team up against certain defeat.
