'Mega Man' creator says Japanese publishers need to 'wake up'

If you grew up playing any installment of the storied Mega Man franchise, the name Keiji Inafune should carry some weight. Inafune's one of the masterminds behind the beloved metallic man in blue we first met in the NES era. And with his new game, Mighty No. 9, a spiritual successor to his Capcom legacy, he famously kicked off a new wave of Japanese developers who've struck out on their own with the help of crowdfunding.

I've always liked and respected Keiji Inafune. It' true though - I remember the day when American games were for the most part crap. Seems the role has reversed in a big way

Most Japanese developers and companies to

Square Enix, Capcom, Konami and especially Nintendo

DarkOcelet1400d ago

I think Square Enix have woke up and its ready to regain its spot as one of the best Devs/Publishers.

Konami is bye bye.

Capcom needs a slap in the head to get their $hit together and actually listen to the fans for once.

They woke up because the guy that was running it left.

Well Square is doing alright.
Everybody else needs to get their heads out of their arse.

I would say Square has been trying to do that for a couple years now. Bravely Default, FFXV, FFXIV, I don't think many give the enough credit as their only fault was the whole FFXIII series.

The fact that they kept FFVersus in development, re-did FFXIV (which the didn't even need to btw) and Bravely Default shows that they for some time have been at least trying.

I can't say the same for Capcom (outsourcing their games) or Nintendo (has the most money out of the 3, yet buys the least teams, yet is surprised when they sell the least and have a series of droughts and have to outsource for LOTS of their titles)

Konami outrights doesn't even want to be in gaming anymore and thats fully ok...(sell dem IPs doe!)

Shenmue 3 ,Final Fantasy 7 remake.... i really hope this is return of golden age of japanese devs because otherwise it may be too late...

We will not see anything like that, the budgets required for triple a tier games has gotten to high.

Game development has become increasingly complicated and costly due to the number of people needed for making a modern game.

FF7 cost roughly a 100 million almost 20 years ago, that was beyond unheard of for that time period.

I think Japanese devs should use kickstarter or any other funding methods available and concentrate on smaller downloadable games for all consoles as well as pc.

There is in my opinion still a decent little chuck of gamers that still enjoy Japanese flavored or stylized games.

I think japan needs to move away from big aaa games and focus on smaller but still solid titles.

I think final fantasy's will be the exception to the rule.

Konami and Capcom need to wake up, thats for sure.

First things first, we need to go back to the turn-based RPG era... it's a start in the right direction

Moe-Gunz1400d ago

I prefer the battle system Transistor uses. Not outdated but still pays homage to the turn based system.
