Horizon: Zero Dawn Preview – Gorgeous Environments and Female Badassery

Stephanie Burdo with TheKoalition.com writes:

"Horizon: Zero Dawn is many things, all of which are positive. After watching the extended gameplay trailer at E3 2015, I felt as if the Horizon series could be one that sticks around for the long haul. As a gaming community, we have become accustom to the lackluster repetition of staple-held, fan favorite series. Continuously adding onto existing universes, we rarely experience anything new."

This definitely was a surprise to see and especially so because Guerrilla is behind it. Definitely will keep my eye on this one.

Rimeskeem3227d ago

Just goes to show how talented GG really is.

jeremyj29133227d ago

This game pretty much stole the show for me. Was definitely a major highlight of my E3 experience.

joab7773227d ago

This was my favorite surprise from E3. I knew of the leaks, but nothing pointed to this!!!

I'm a tad bit worried though b/c the sentiment right now is way too suportive. When do we get to find something wrong with it and post 100k articles tearing it apart. Graphics are amzing, huge open world, rpg elements, crazy combat, intuitive learning system, and a bad ass female character.

I'm super scared as to exactly what will be this games undoing.

Majin-vegeta3227d ago

This seems to be the craze at e3.Glad to see a new IP getting all this attention.

jeremyj29133227d ago

I'm glad to hear that. Almost everything I've seen had been negative. I can't wait for this game to release.

joab7773227d ago

Wait. What did you see that was negative? I don't think I've seen anything but glorious praise for this showing.

guyman3227d ago

"Almost everything I've seen had been negative"

You didnt see anything then, did you?

jeremyj29133225d ago

Nothing press related. Just comments sections from different sites.

Only White People with Dreads survive the Apocalypse

joab7773227d ago

There it is. I just posted above, wondering where the negativity would rear it's ugly, hit garnering head? Race. I didn't even consider that.

ThichQuangDuck3227d ago

I mean I also wish the game had some kind of multiplayer or coop component. I was joking but I found it interesting how there were only white people with dreads show cased. I am no joke wondering if that is a story thing. You can take it as a joke, you can take it serious or you can question it.

SaveFerris3227d ago

I'm sure there will be 'diversity' in this game.

iceman063227d ago

Yep!!! Various types of dino-bots and dread-headed white people!!! LOL It had to be done!

Tauriel3227d ago

How about that soundtrack.....

DF Weekly: Do we actually need The Last of Us Part 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn remasters?

With the details we now have in terms of features and pricing, I don't think there are any significant concerns remaining - just that perhaps that the term 'remastered' in the title is a little misplaced. Essentially, what we're dealing with here is broadly equivalent to a release along the lines of Death Stranding: Director's Cut. It's the original game with a dash of extra content and additional visual modes that tap into the power of PlayStation 5.

Bloodborne, Infamous, Killzone, Resistance, Puppeteer, Jak and Daxter etc are all better choices

Even a full on remake of Drakes Fortune I’d take

PrinceOfAnger141d ago

killzone 2/3 definitely a better choice, i have recently finished the games on pc and thought about that, a full remake like demon souls is even better

darthv72140d ago

2&3 are still fine... I'd take the first one as a full remake before the others. They could flesh out more of the backstory that the sequels touch on. Even go deeper into the lore of Helgan.

specialguest140d ago

KZ 2/3 would be amazing. KZ 2 was a graphical masterpiece back then. With today's modern tech, all of those tricks Guerilla Games did to create the effects like the lighting, storm effects, etc, they could now be done in real-time and more realistic

Cacabunga140d ago

Killzone 2-3
Golden Abyss remake
Infamous 2

RaidenBlack141d ago

Uncharted 1 still got a decent remaster for 8th gen ... a remake is not that much of a requirement ...
instead remake candidates should be from 5th or 6th gen
and as for proper remasters (not just lazy res upscale): Killzone 2 & 3 obviously and also Resistance/inFamous (as well as MGS4 :P)

-Foxtrot140d ago

My point with the list is that I’d rather see those titles than what we are getting…titles which are only 3-5 years old and still hold up today

CrashMania140d ago

Sony own the Demons Souls and Bloodborne IP, I wish they'd do something with Bloodborne at the very least.

vfl523140d ago

The way you worded that makes me think you don't realize they already remade demon souls

140d ago
GamingSinceForever140d ago

Not one of those will sell more copies than TLOU2 Remaster. The sooner we realize that these gaming sites and their followers are less than 1% of the buying public the better off we’ll be.

Sure we prefer newer titles but this is business and a business is what Sony is running.

JackBNimble140d ago

Don't you think they could be doing something better with their time and money, like maybe making something new? Or have they become lazy and just reliving the past with the same old games over and over.

Gez ... do something fresh and new already .

notachance140d ago

I'd rather for them to go Square Enix route and remake/remaster their PS1 libraries instead of these unnecessary remaster

come on, legend of dragoon..

Gamingsince1981140d ago

What's with the "need" anyway ? This is video games, no one needs them at all, we need water , we need air, we don't need games.

Barlos140d ago

I would love a remake/remaster of KZ1. For its time it really pushed the PS2 hard and because of that it had a few issues. This is begging to be given the Bluepoint touch and brought up to date. I'd love to see an updated Killzone trilogy collection for sure.

Yi-Long140d ago

Sony killed the game and the studio behind it, but a Remaster of the excellent Driveclub would absolutely be my favorite release if it happened. Just a delicious racing game.

FinalFantasyFanatic140d ago (Edited 140d ago )

So many better choices, I can't fathom why reasonably recent games are getting picked over Classics that are more deserving.

Well I want a Horizon Zero Dawn remaster especially if it's an upgrade to Forbidden West Graphics and Animation.

Duke19140d ago

Nope. But HD remasters are an easy cash grab that the masses shovel cash for because while they complain about remakes, they still buy them

PRIMORDUS140d ago

Not if they release on a platform that never received the original in the first place like PC.

46player140d ago

No complaint here, I want the updated graphics.

Ra3030140d ago

My thoughts on this is do we need Richard Leadbetter's or Digital Foundry's opinion on anything........ever? I know I don't they do nothing for me and never have.

specialguest140d ago

You may not, but tons of people do since the video has 4,700 Likes to 112 Dislikes

Chocoburger140d ago

That guy is a buffoon, DF Direct is the best gaming podcast around. I look forward to it every week.

BehindTheRows140d ago

By that same token, some may not NEED remasters, while others may/do.

Amplitude140d ago (Edited 140d ago )

DF videos are typically absolutely amazing game reviews first and foremost. They have great intros, explain the mechanics well, tell you if they enjoyed it or not (I usually vibe well with John's games personally), and then they have the best tech breakdowns of a game's performance which is very very important to me. I want to know what settings to run at on PC, and on PS5 I wanna know if the 60fps mode runs well or not because if it doesn't... well I'll just get it on PC (If it isn't completely broken there too). DF Retro is also always unbelievably interesting and super well edited and inspired my YouTube channel which just crossed 1200 subs (wooo!). They helped me a lot with understanding game development and got me interested in goofing around with game engines and PC building in general back in the day.

I don't mean any offence by this but you sound like somebody who skims their analysis videos, selectively scrolls to the stats, says "who cares?", and then closes it. Or possibly somebody who watches (stolen) cut clips on TikTok? Even if you are somehow unaffected by blurry images and fluctuating frame rates (some people are and I envy you) I recommend watching a full DF episode one day. They're extremely interesting and I watch literally all of them even if I have no interest in the game.

Curious to know more about these "plans". I assume many will be expansions (dlc) while they will at some point release a full horizon 3 or maybe even 4.

shinoff2183282d ago

Wasn't there word about a show to at some point I thought I remembered seeing something. 16 is a pretty high number lol. I like the series though , I liked it the most of what Sony brought new on ps4.

Vengeance1138281d ago

Yes, a TV show is in development at Netflix.

S2Killinit281d ago

Netflix or amazon. One of the two.

EvertonFC281d ago

So looking FWD to 3 and see where it takes us

Adrian_v01281d ago

After Forbidden West I'm so fatigued by Aloy I don't need any more sequels tbh.

Ashunderfire86281d ago

Different character in the story perhaps.

Slappy McGee281d ago

It's kind of difficult with the way they have the game set up. Everything is built around her being "the one" and the savior of humanity. They definitely Mary Sued the series into a corner. Unless they come out with the co-op robot hunter game based in their Horizon world that was talked about then there could have somewhere else to go with the series but even then everyone would have to ignore the world dying around them to make it work.

Abear21281d ago

Exploring the detailed biomes was my fav part of the game, especially gliding and (later on) flying, and underwater was amazing too. I’ll explore another open world from GG day one.

Popsicle280d ago (Edited 280d ago )

Agreed. I enjoyed Aloy in Zero Dawn, but the personality she has taken on after becoming “the savior” is in my personal opinion unlikable and unrelatable.

crazyCoconuts281d ago

Here's what I'm ready for: play as a rough dude in the Horizon universe. Less flowery dialog, more Just Cause blowing things up?
Would be a nice change of pace imo

ChasterMies281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

Your “rough dude” game is “Horizon Call of the Mountain on PSVR2”. Great game. A “rough dude” protagonist like the Doom Slayer wouldn’t work for a main Horizon game because the overall story requires the protagonist to be an outside thinker, cerebral, and empathetic enough to build a coalition of allies. It would be like putting Doom Slayer in “Raiders of the Lost Ark. Sure, he’d kill a lot of Nazis, but he would never find the Ark or save anyone.

crazyCoconuts281d ago

I mean, there can be multiple stories in a universe like Horizon. You could put doom slayer in a parallel story involving a horde of corrupted machines led by a mad man as an example.

syrupywaffles281d ago

No thanks. Go play Just Cause for that. Horizon isn't about mindless, blow stuff up, action. The story, dialog and characters of this world are what make it special and Aloy is a fantastic protagonist. Coupled with that, you already have awesome gameplay in fighting amazingly designed robotic enemies (the human enemies, however, need some work). It's perfect the way it is and as long as they keep evolving on their current path, then it'll be wonderful.

Noskypeno281d ago

I would like a fps prequel set before the machines took over.

crazyCoconuts281d ago

Yes! Perfect... With modern weaponry... Great idea!

I love this franchise but Jesus...take a chill pill

Look what happened to Killzone, they got success and it was Killzone, Killzone, Killzone, Killzone, Killzone until eventually the quality slowly dropped, it started to become samey and we just got so fatigued by the Killzone Universe that most lost any excitement for it.

I'd rather they take a break, work on a new IP, get some new ideas going with that game and then when the PS6 comes around as a launch game do Horizon III with all the new fresh ideas you've learnt from the last new IP

Kurt Russell281d ago

I wouldn't mind a new Killzone universe game come of think of it... I'd like to see Playstation create at least 1 FPS this gen.

Vengeance1138281d ago

2 Games in 5 years needs a chill pill? We really haven't gotten all that much for the series. Perhaps you just read too many Horizon articles.

JEECE281d ago

It is crazy how people constantly complain about how games were better and less rushed 10-20 years ago, ignoring the fact that we often used to get sequels to games every two years or so. Now you get a sequel 4-7 years after a game launched and people start screaming about franchise fatigue and how the devs are driving the series into the ground.

-Foxtrot281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

VR game, TV show in the works, the bird game, Horizon III coming, the multiplayer game, they are talking about other things

Come on…this is just the start

Vengeance1138281d ago

@ Foxtrot
"VR game, TV show in the works, the bird game, Horizon III coming, the multiplayer game, they are talking about other things "

Because all those things are coming out this year? What on earth is the bird game? Horizon 3 and the Live service game are many many years away like 2025 or later and the TV show you simply don't have to watch if you don't want to. There are many other franchises that need a bigger chill pill than Horizon. Call of Duty and Assassins Creed being the top 2.

Ashunderfire86281d ago

Horizon 3 will come out on PS5.

FinalFantasyFanatic281d ago

This, don't give people franchise fatigue, I love the games, but if they just keep hammering out more HZD, people are going to get sick of it. I would be up for a Netflix series though as long as it's good, and a new game in a few years would be fine with me.

zaanan281d ago

While this may be true, I thought the death of Killzone was more due their failure to stick to what worked. KZ2 was the best Killzone, but they completely scrapped the feel of that with KZ3, which tried to be a COD clone.

andy85281d ago

You really can't win sometimes though. If a series takes ages between installments people complain this is 2 in 5 years, I don't consider that bad. We got GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas within 3 years, I don't remember anyone complaining then

-Foxtrot281d ago

Development times back then compared to now are completely different

You could wait years for a sequel but there still might not e that many improvements that REALLY sets it apart

Forbidden West was pushing it, it had a few new things but by the end of the game it didn’t really have enough to really set it apart from the first game in terms of features (not graphics, visuals etc).

If we get a third game even if it takes 4 years I don’t know what else they could add in that games setting. They are better off doing a new IP for now and keep the sequel for later.

Joris de Man on composing music for the Horizon series

In the video game industry, where visual design and game mechanics typically grab the limelight, the significance of music in enhancing the overall gaming experience is often underestimated. Music can be a key component in the player’s emotional connection with a game. It amplifies emotional impact, heightens tension, and can be a powerful driver of narrative. We’ve had the chance to speak to Joris de Man, a renowned Dutch composer best known for his work on the Killzone series, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and its sequel Horizon: Forbidden West. During the Game Access conference in Brno, we talked about the process of composing music for video games and how he created the harmonies that have shaped some of our most beloved gaming experiences.
