Hardcore Droid - I was scared that this would happen. I only recently stepped into the world of mobile gaming, and from the start I was dreading the day I would stumble upon a game with the pay-to-win business model, wondering not if, but when such a game would make its way to me. It’s a shame, because Dungeon Crawlers HD is a well-made game otherwise, one with a whimsical, if overly referential sense of humor, and a strategic combat system.
For many, the premise behind a list of the best Android RPGs amounts to a contradiction in terms. Most of us who work and play in the mobile gaming sphere do in fact understand that our platform of choice is the red-haired stepchild of the gaming industry. Believe it or not, if you dig down a level deeper into the sub-cellar of small one, two-man indie dev teams, you have a subgenre that is the village idiot of the gaming industry. Thing is, as with the best social misfits, some genuinely compelling stuff has reared its wholly head out of the depths of gaming’s social underbelly.
So far 2015 has been a banner year for Android RPGs. While, unfortunately, we haven’t exactly seen a straight Western RPG lately, Android has, on the other hand, in this third quarter of 2015, developed a potpourri of new digital role-playing games. This year’s best include Action RPGs, Puzzle RPGs, ports of classic JRPGs, as well as a contemporary JRPG, and finally a couple of indies inspired, in part, by Western RPGs. Among these there are, thankfully, a decent-sized contingent of mobile-only titles. Regardless of the intended audience or sub-genre, however, each and every title below is deserving of its spot on this list in spades. What we have, considered as a whole, is a solid and eclectic spread, one that is reflective of the veritable smorgasbord of delights that Android gaming is becoming.
Indie developer Drowning Monkeys has announced virtual reality (VR) support for the Steam release of their upcoming videogame, Dungeon Crawlers HD. A comedic take on who the Ghostbusters would have been in the medieval times, Dungeon Crawlers HD is a strategy role-playing game (SRPG) set to launch on PC this summer.
