Watching E3 As a Fanboy Is The Worst Way To Watch

Richard Drummond of Gaming Tech United writes:

"E3 is a special time in the gaming community, some even refer to it as 'A Gamer's Christmas'. New games are shown, release dates are announced, and the biggest titles for the next handful of years are trotted around by their respective developers and publishers. The question is, what's the best way to watch it? I know the simple answer; not as a fan boy of a certain company."

E3 is all about the great games that are coming and the great tech that will allow you to play them. People can fanboy all they want but the people who are focused on all the great products shown are the real winners.

NinjaRichParty3663d ago (Edited 3663d ago )

I totally agree brother! When you sit back and enjoy gaming as whole, regardless of what platforms you own, then you really experience E3 for what it is, a special event for the gaming community.

Rimeskeem3663d ago

I just set my expectation to 0 and whatever is announced or shown is a positive.

freshslicepizza3663d ago

read the comments here and you will see the familiar faces sticking to their guns. if they love sony they will say sony won the show, if they love nintendo they will say nintendo won, same thing with xbox. it really does show how biased people are who already have this mindset before e3 what to expect and what they will take away from it.

Lightning Mr Bubbles3663d ago

Yeah it's bad. I watch the XBOX conference with my fingers crossed hoping the damage isn't too severe. I'm constantly hoping the next thing they announce isn't too good.

Army_of_Darkness3663d ago (Edited 3663d ago )

I only have a PS4 so obviously, I'm most excited for Sony's conference in hopes they deliver great upcoming games. However, I still watch Nintendo's and Microsoft's conference because at the back of my mind, I'm like "show me something that will impress me and convince me to buy your console!"
so as much as I'm camp Sony, I'm still open minded and anxious to see what the other guys have to offer ;-)

mikeslemonade3663d ago

Meh.. it's fun. Now let me ask you.. Is it more fun to watch the NBA Finals when you don't care who wins or is it more fun to watch the NBA Finals when you are a fan of one of the teams?

DragonKnight3663d ago (Edited 3663d ago )

It's no secret that I have a huge preference for Sony, but every E3 I go into it with the attitude of "Ok MS and Nintendo, make me regret not owning your stuff." There might be that one day, that one game that is on another console that I can't justify not having. In my experience it means I place high expectations on Sony (who have recently underwhelmed with their last, indie filled E3), and medium to low expectations on the other 2. This tends to mean that I can be impressed with a game like Scalebound and Mario Maker, and although I was extremely hyped for Bloodborne, I was pretty much left feeling "meh" about the rest of Sony's stuff. Again, too much focus on indies.

But I think that I have a decent attitude in that respect with E3. Lets me be more open-minded. I'm sure if MS or Nintendo killed it with an old-school JRPG similar to the likes of Suikoden, Grandia, Rogue Galaxy, or Dark Cloud... then that would be quite tempting.

All bets are off if any of the Big 3 get an awesome Final Fantasy Tactics sequel. Especially if it's made to look more like Valkyria Chronicles.

Gazondaily3662d ago

Ah you gotta treat it as banter. The rivalry adds a lot of fun to the proceedings...well for me anyway n_n

UnHoly_One3662d ago

Mike Lemonade that is a terrible analogy.

This isn't a direct competition with a clearly defined score declaring a winner.

It's basically a huge advertisement for future games.

Going into it already decided on what you like and don't like seems pretty silly.

The only loser is my Wallet. If Gears of War looks great I will have to get an Xbox One to go with PS4 that I just got. Poor Wallet, but he will survive muhahahhahah. I am just happy to get good games on all platforms for various taste. Fanboys thrive on N4G through arguments of 60fps, 4k, Graphics, etc. Time to play games. There is great value to the Psychology of Play so enjoy it. There are no teams until we get Cross Platform Online :)

rainslacker3663d ago

It's fun to watch as both a fan boy and a gamer. Those little jabs at the other companies expense have more meaning if you look at it from a fan boy perspective. :)

DragonKnight3663d ago

That video with Shu and Adam on how to share Playstation games. Man that was sweet for Sony fanboys and even the Xbox fanboys had to admit it even if they hated it.

For old times sake.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

And this parody

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

rainslacker3663d ago

Yeah, the time following the reveal, and subsequent E3 was a pretty fun time to be a fan or a fan boy, at least on the Sony side. When Nintendo fans and fan boys are taking serious jabs at MS then you know you messed up. Most of the MS ones were pretty silent...maybe in shock.

At least MS changed things so the console wars could go back to the meaningless tripe it's always been.:)

GamingChip793663d ago

Glad someone actually wrote a piece like this. I'm so sick of people using E3 as a platform for hate and to fuel the fanboy war.

E3 is time for us to look to the future of gaming and get excited as to what the developers have in store for us. It's a celebration of gaming, not a place to spew hate for other companies.

NinjaRichParty3663d ago

For sure! I'm not trying to say don't get excited for the games coming to the consoles you have, but I think that people should just take a step back and enjoy the week and new games that are talked about across the board.

God I love E3. Haha.

WeAreLegion3663d ago (Edited 3663d ago )

I don't know. As someone who used to be all about the "winning", I can safely say it was a lot more fun to watch it that way. Now, it's exciting, but doesn't pack the same dramatic weight.

I'm not saying it's better to be a fanboy. Quite the opposite. It's just a lot more fun. That's part of the draw of being a fanboy. You're in a "war".

GameDev13663d ago

But to be honest, as a game fanboy you are in a particularly meaningless war, imaginary at best

Watching E3 as a neutral allows you to enjoy games, visuals, announcements, jokes on stage more.

This past E3s for me has just been amount choosing what console to buy based on their showings. Sony made me get a PS4, now am looking between MS and Nintendo for my next.

But i tell you even though am more on the Sony side, Watching MS E3 last year was so much fun(made me follow Phil and Larry on twitter) that am looking forward to it more than ever this year.

WeAreLegion3663d ago

It is imaginary. Obviously. It's just fun. Haha.

Thatguy-3103663d ago (Edited 3663d ago )

Exactly! Developers and publishers know it because they add fuel to it. No matter how you see it someone is going to have better games and they'll show it off and make sure the the message is clear that they're better than the competition. Even though I love Sony I still love watching all the other conference to see what games they got going on. I'm psyched to see how Rise of the tomb raider will be since I love the past installment. When there's competition people are always going to choose sides. Asking people not to be fanboys is like asking someone not to have a favorite sport team.

Elit3Nick3663d ago

It's not fun though when fanboys push it on people that don't want to be a part of it.

Perjoss3663d ago

The console war, the console war never changes

Nintendo Switch 2 sales shatters records, most-sold console in 24-hour period

The Nintendo Switch 2 has set a new record by selling over 3 million units within 24 hours, tripling the PlayStation 4’s previous launch day sales.

Crazy. Switch 2 is going to do very well.

darthv725d ago (Edited 5d ago )

No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.

The number of SW2 specific titles pales in comparison to the variety of SW1 games that get a performance boost right out of the box on this. And like the SX and PS5 before it, you can bet the majority are going to be using it as a means to better enjoy their existing titles that can benefit.

This may have been quick out of the gate... so was the WiiU. I quite enjoy it for what it is, but am keeping my expectations in check.

GenoPurpel5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

The Switch 2’s price point is great and fine and it’s still cheaper than the current gen of consoles aside from the Series S.

The only place I think they will fall short is their software sales, which also in turn may affect the hardware sales but not significantly. Parents will be fine paying for the system for their kids, but one look at an $80-$90 price tag for a single video game, that is where a lot of people will draw the line. Maybe not so much the people who are in the “willing to pay because I buy deluxe editions anyway” crowd, but for parents specifically, more sacrifices are gonna need to be made in their choices of gifts for their kids.

OtterX5d ago

As a parent of 3 with a very modest income, it was very affordable bc I already had an immense library of games, and the Mario Kart bundle came out to only about €50 more than a standard bundle. Both Zeldas were upgraded w Family Expansion Pass that I already had. Many games were upgraded for free. The only additional game I bought was Fast Fusion for 14.99 which was a great purchase!

Killer2020UK5d ago

People seem to forget that the Switch was $299 at launch which in today's money is roughly $400. That makes the Switch 2 a $50 increase when inflation is taken into account compared to the original.

Yes, people have less spending power on average compared to 2017 (Switch launch year) but this is not the MASSIVE price hike that people are making out Nintendo to be doing.

raWfodog5d ago

“No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.”

It could also be many people rushing to buy to avoid any possible tariff hikes in the future, but I think it’s still a good sign that many people still want physical consoles. Congrats to Nintendo! I’m not getting one at this time though (unless I get it for a Xmas present for one of my kids).

Congratulations Nintendo on finding the happy medium between their weak console and their invincible handheld plus learning from Sony and clearly defining the new console from the old unlike their Wii and Wii U just add a higher number simple yet effective 👍👍

victorMaje5d ago

Are people that keen on $90 games?
Is it true some remasters will also be $90?

DankSinatra5d ago

Tell me you don't research without telling me you don't research.

victorMaje5d ago

Nope. I didn’t research, I don’t own any Nintendo consoles and I had read on here something about $90 games on switch 2, so I guess it’s good now, people can calm down. Have a nice day :)

1nsomniac5d ago

I bought the Switch 2 I won’t be buying games at MK prices. I don’t ever pay over £45 for my games. Even my Nintendo switch exclusives I never paid more than £33 for.

franwex5d ago

I think the typo you put was meant to be $80.
Anyway, the answer to those questions seem to be yes.

victorMaje5d ago

Looks like I’ve been enlightened about the amount. Happy to see it’s not $90.

Sgt_Slaughter3d ago

Don't get your news from clickbait TikTokers/YouTubers, only go to the source (Nintendo) or reliable new outlets like IGN.

No game is $90 on the Switch 2, and they will never go there. Most games will be under $80, too.

Profchaos5d ago

Its crazy that it's both the highest selling console on day 1 and people can walk into a store and buy it with no pre order

Ashunderfire865d ago

Yup while I was waiting in line from Best Buy for Switch 2, like I did for Switch 1 back in 2017, every waiting 12am was going to get a Switch 2! I was in the no preorder line too!

My friend manage to get 4 Switch 2s at his GameStop store, that was lowkey not busy at all. Got them all for himself and his family. Super easy to get a Switch 2 over PS5.

Profchaos5d ago

The struggle to get a ps5 was real had mates wait over 2 years for stock i got lucky and got it day 1 but still

Ashunderfire865d ago

I know and I also struggled getting a preorder for the PS5, when Walmart, Best Buy among other retailers open their preorders a day early before most of us realize it. I got my PS5 launch day thanks to YouTube Live Streamer Jake Randell. He helps people get preorders and launch consoles.

Neonridr4d ago

the PS5 also released during a global pandemic.

Ashunderfire864d ago

It’s funny how I got disagrees for speaking the truth for what I experienced getting the Switch 2. Nintendo had more copies of Switch 2 than Sony for the PS5.

Don’t be butthurt about this very fact. People on here disagreeing with crazy reasons lol

Doesn't that mean Nintendo made sure they had plenty of stock available at retail.

Profchaos5d ago

Yeah it's nice to see they prepped for it

adamwparker5d ago

Yeah, I remember reading an article over two years ago with Nintendo stating that they were going to do all that they could to make sure their next console didn't have the PS5/XBox reseller swiping /no stock fiasco happen to them.

Looks like they made sure production met demand. Refreshing to see that the reseller thing didn't trend and I hope a lot of people who bought multiple units for the sole reason to resell then at $1000 are now stuck with them.

jznrpg5d ago

It also means there isn’t a chip shortage when PS5/Xbox came out during pandemic

gold_drake5d ago

to be where fair, we had a current gen come out during covid ha

repsahj5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I remembered I tried 7 pre-order events during the PS5 launch. I gave up and ended up buying 1 from a scalper. But now, I already secured 1 pre-order Switch 2 unit in my country very easy and without problems.

kudos to Nintendo for ensuring a healthy amount of stock.

Activision Forces Adverts into Call of Duty Black Ops 6 and Warzone Loadouts

With the launch of Call of Duty Season 4, Activision quietly put adverts inside loadouts for Black Ops 6 and Warzone, sparking a backlash in the process.

lukasmain12d ago

Putting Ads in a pay-to-play Premium title? Well done Microsoft. Well done /s This is really scummy.

jjb198112d ago

This game will never change because these sweatlords love buying up all the skins and bundles that become obsolete the following year. They're the ones perpetuating Activision's greed.

VenomUK11d ago

If Microsoft introduces adverts into its other games I hope it can do them without disrupting the immersion of the game world. So for example in the new Fable game it would look out of place if there was a billboard advertising Cadillacs.

A far better way to do it would be to have a wizard conjure a 'dream cloud' in front of your character and then in the cloud you can see the Cadillac car and see the text with price and availability and hear a booming sales voice promoting the car. That would work so well as it wouldn't be a billboard and completely, 100%, fit in with your character's adventuring in Albion. Doesn't that sound so much better?!

crazyCoconuts11d ago

@venom, or how about our of 100 farts in Albion, 1 of them has a Cadillac pop out

VenomUK11d ago

@crazyCoconuts That’s undeniably off-beat - but it could really work!

Xbox's first-party handheld has been sidelined

Xbox's handheld ambitions continue unabated, but the focus is shifting towards improving Windows 11 for third-party handhelds — for now. The Xbox Series X 'Melrose' successor is safe, with development continuing at full pace.

Is there really a market for handhelds next to mobile?

Vits14d ago

If they run the same games as the main home console, then yeah, sure.
But if they need specially tailored games just for them? Probably not, unless there isn't a home console for comparison (see Switch).

RaidenBlack13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I am kinda low-key happy this happened.
Dont want another Series S situation (games to be designed from 4 to 12TF scale and not 10 to 12TF).
Hope PS follows suit as well. Tablet SKU sharing with console for 10th gen, will just continue the cross gen -esque development/design phase/nature.
Want a proper 20+ only TF rasterized next-gen plz (+ frame-gen and the lot).
If anybody wants to continue the cross-gen, the Series S|X, PS5 will remain for that. And Switch 2, if you gotta go even lower in the TF range.

ABizzel114d ago

Yes and No. All of the PC handhelds combined have struggled to sell 7 million units, which would be a flop for any “console”. So the market is extremely niche because of price and target market (the informed hardcore gamer / casuals aren’t picking these up).

These handheld PCs are $500 or more, and offer at best Xbox Series S performance levels, so it’s best for MS specifically to just partner with ASUS, instead of investing millions if not billions.

Sony can make their own with custom AMD hardware due to their partnership, and stronger global brand for hardware. But even then it brings the question, of being a lower resolution PS5, and what does that mean for PS6 cross-gen (likely another generation where the first 3 - 4 years are just upgraded last-gen games).

Kosic14d ago

Imagine a Wii U style console, where the tablet doesn't rely on the console it's self, you download the game on the console under the TV and play in 4k glory, then you can remote play, get some unique game features if using both console and handheld in tandem. Then you can download the games in 720-1080p to play on the go, continue your progress, and continue on the TV when you get back.

Sony could get away with this due to exclusives, and that would be a reason for sales. Look at the portal.

I can picture seeing new hardware having some sort of GPU dock, where the handheld runs 1080p, and the dock has additional hardware to bring in 4k/60 specs.

I do think handheld gaming is going to be a strong future, imagine Nintendo release a new upgraded GPU dock for the Switch 3, every 2 years. More frames, sharper graphics on the same game for an extra £150 for a dock with a built in GPU chip. Console cycles doesn't have to be renewed, just the hardware can be improved by them reselling docks to us again and again with small/yearly upgrades like mobile phones.

GamerRN13d ago

Did you just imply that Sony can make a better stronger handheld than Microsoft? You do realize we are talking about Microsoft, the tech giant, right? If Microsoft can't make one that's cost effective, Sony definitely can't...

Brand and market share means nothing when you are a trillion dollar company

ABizzel113d ago

@GamerRN

It has nothing to do with what company can do it, or what company can spend.

For anyone taking a basic business class there is a term called ROI, and Xbox home consoles are selling at an all time low, meaning their ROI on a handheld is a risk that doesn’t make sense, even if they can afford it. Businesses are there to make money and it doesn’t make sene for MS to invest in a handheld that’s a companion device when their current home consoles they’ve spent 20 years working on are at an all time-low, when they can invest with little risk with what ASUS already has to offer.

This is why Sony can build a better device, because they have less risk involved, meaning they can invest more in their own product, and they already have an exclusive partnership with AMD on creating features and hardware. So in this specific case, YES Sony can built a better handheld, due to custom hardware, customer tools, low level APIs, compared to an off the shelf product running Windows or a Window Xbox kernel =.

Funny to see the alt already damage controlling and having a meltdown with multiple accounts in the comments already.

Sad for MS if true, a dedicated handheld would go down a lot better than a rog ally 2 with an Xbox sticker on it I think.

crazyCoconuts14d ago

It couldn't have succeeded for a number of reasons. Now they've retreated to the Windows front and trying to keep that relevant for gaming. How long before Windows Central realizes there won't be a real console successor to Series X either?

Lightning7714d ago

Except there is. That project is reportedly full speed ahead.

Outside_ofthe_Box14d ago

@Lighting77

So was the handheld until today...

Lightning7714d ago

@outside obviously not since they sidelined it and they wanna see how the Asus does. Are you saying they're gonna cancel the next console?

crazyCoconuts14d ago

@lightning - I'm admittedly trying to box you in here - Do you think the next Xbox console will have Steam on it?

Outside_ofthe_Box14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

@Lightning

Here we go with having to spell everything out.

If I told you yesterday that Xbox was going to sideline the handheld console what would your response have been? Probably something along the lines of "I doubt that since Phil has been talking about it for some time now"

My point is just because they are "full speed" ahead now does not mean that will not change in future. As we have seen with the handheld. Do you understand what I'm trying to say now?

Lightning7714d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Box me in? No you said the same thing you've always been saying for years now. Those are the rumors to have Steam integration.

What about it

If you told me they were gonna cancel it tomorrow it would nothing more than fanboy talking points. I only wait for credible sources not what someone else says.

Also this is the handheld not a full blown new console. The Asus is yet to release and they're waiting to see how that thing does. Critical thinking is my strong suit you should try it some time if you can. But Ok cool well you hang your hat on that I guess. Main New console is gonna get cancelled even though the handheld is a different marketing device than the main the console itself.

__y2jb13d ago

That's what they do. Goalposts shift like the wind.

I'm really confused on why they are making a "first party" device and also have a Rog Ally with their sticker on it. Make this make sense. How is their own device going to be any different?

Your console doesn't sell and they expect a handheld to?

RaidenBlack13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

The Rog Ally one is gen agnostic ... as you deciphered, it was to be the updated Rog Ally but just with Xbox branding. PC handheld with some Xbox features.
The handheld Xbox is/was supposed to be sharing the same gen/ecosystem with the next-gen (10th gen) Xbox. Think Series S but handheld ... it'll run the Xbox OS or whatever the next Xbox will run.
...
As for anybody wondering/confused why MS is doing another Xbox console ... coz mainly its the 10th gen of home consoles next, which started wayy back in 1972 for the 1st gen. And MS wanna be part in it, in the 10th anniversary gen of consoles. If they gotta bow out, they can't do that at 9th i.e just before 10th. They wanna stick around till the 10th or the X-th gen and check what the fuss happens.
