Sony Admits 1st Party PS4 Games in 2015 "a Little Sparse;" 3rd Party Exclusive "Difficult to Secure"

During the Electronics Investor Relations Day 2015 Sony CEO Andrew House talked about first party and third party games on PS4.

what i like most is how well spaced exculsives are.
The Order in February, Bloodborne in April, USFIV in May, Guilty Gear Xrd in June, Until Dawn in August... plus of course #rd party releases in between.
at the time of PS3 we got like 4 exclusives the same month.

I love me some Bloodborne, but that game will not hold me through December, and Sony's lineup isn't looking too good through the end of the year.

Well even House is admitting what many on here would not and I don't see what there is to defend. Bloodborne is the best first party title this year anyway though and a possible GOTY so it does mitigate that element to a large extent, well for me (and fans of the game) anyway.

Also, it is interesting to note the attempts to secure 3rd party content by Sony. Whilst the importance of that should be obvious anyway, do expect a similar approach to Microsoft last gen in this regard because now that Sony have such a massive lead, they will feel less pressure to deliver first party titles than Microsoft.

Lumping up Uncharted with the fiscal year and construing it as a 2015 release in that sense isn't really going to matter that much to us lot, aside from guessing the release date like the author has.

Is this an indication that there might be little to show for 2015 releases as far as E3 is concerned? Who knows. I do expect some unannounced 2015 titles to be announced though (or very early 2016 titles).

He's not gonna answer, so allow me...

Before I bought Wild Hunt, I was playing State of Decay, Forza, Sunset Overdrive (got it last month), Lifeless Planet, Titanfall (despite what you've heard, people still play it), Ori and even the occasional round of #IDARB with da boyz (what we lack in talent, we make for with drunken abuse)... also Dragon Age, Telltale's Game of Thrones and Worms (another great game for multiplayer drunks).

It doesn't matter when a game releases - it's quality is all that matters.

Yeah, I'm jealous of Bloodborne and Driveclub probably doesn't suck as much as people say, but the rest of the PS4's exclusive lineup is bland... I've played Infamous, Littlebigplanet, Killzone, Octodad, Knack and the Order and I didn't want to finish any of them.

Mr. House's comments do little for my enthusiasm.

That said, Persona looks great.
As does Uncharted and Wild... I have my doubts about No Man's Sky, Everybody's gone to the Rapture and Rime, but the other three (and Bloodborne's inevitable GotY edition) will likely be the games that finally sell me a PS4.

Until Dawn sure won't... or Planetside or Street Fighter or the Tomorrow Children... or Godzilla...

I think the only exclusive that I really want to play on the PS4 is bloodborne. That game looks amazing but I am not impressed with the rest. I don't care if your releasing games year round. I need GOOD games not mediocre ones.

I will admit that there have not been a lot of exclusives for the X1 so far this year. Ori was fantastic but it was not a full AAA game (still took longer to beat than the order though). I have not had any moments where I did not have anything to play on my X1 but most of those games so far this year have been multiplats or betas (Halo 5, fable legends, smite).

On a side note. I'm wondering who has been playing SMITE. I just got in to the beta a couple days ago and I have to say the game is extremely addictive.

I think this is spot on. an interesting reversal of roles has happened and it has even extended to fans of each console.The mindset that is... We all know what NPD reports on N4G were like from 2006- current gen launch. The xbox guys had the sales to brag about..silencing talk of great PS3 exclusives with a simple "the sales speak for themselves"..which always favoured xbox (NPD..and lets face it USA is the largest hardcore console gamer demographic. Thats why the region matters so much). This gen..as Xbox comes swinging out the gate with great exclusives but lackluster sales ..the PS fans shut it down with that same "teh sales" response. Xbox fans sound like PS3 fans last gen. And PS fans sound like xbox fans , last gen.

Its been interesting to watch, to say the least. fans and the companies in question. Even sony's choice of third party tie ins...destiny...starwars...may be COD..im starting to see a theme here and it looks awfully familiar to an xbox gamer. *sips tea*. I got the COD Bundle. collected all my GWG games along the way. I had supertime force and Max:COB six months before I even had an X1, while getting bored of infamous. That game became a chore to finish. Just felt too familiar. When I got it at xmas I bought Halo:MCC, FM5 and Titanfall ( was on sale on XBL for a tenner including the season pass) and BF4 premium in the Xmas sale.(again, before I had the box) Saw FH2 digital delux edition in the xmas XBL sales..so I bought that too. I am a loooong way away from completing FH2. I still haven't even finished FM5. And I cant seem to finish that..because of neverwinter. ori bought it. Haven't played it because I still haven't finished my other games. as bad as I want SSOD I haven't bought it because I haven't even finished my other games. I have only just started halo 3 on MCC!Dont know when Im gonna get to start playing nero. Or lifeless planet. I bought em. I want to play them. But I still have so much game left in my other X1 exclusives. I may never get good at KI because of this. Too much games on my harddrive. Good thing I hate the 1 tb console and a 4TB HDD. Im close to 50 games. Notice how I didnt even mention the multiplats I play on X1 like BF4 and hardline? or Pcars. or GTA.

So tell me again how I as xbox gamer am starved for exclusives right now. Tell me again how I dont have games from now till fall when halo 5, FM6 and tombraider arrive. SM, PD, ND for example still have major projects to release and these are just a few of their big studios.

The roles have not reversed. MS are just finally getting it in their thick head this gen and understand that 1st party content is critical and are now trying to catch up.

It is amazing how hard you guys try to downplay the number of 1st parties Sony have already released or are working on and will release in due time.

Many likely didn't play some of those games when released last gen as no game on PS3 just did 80 million, no 360 game did 80 million, so clearly.....there is a market for those games.

"Indies" are still games. Its not as if someone seeks to buy a game based on funding, budget, ip ownership etc lol. Who the hell plays a game based on such a criteria? Anyone know the budget to Portal? Team size? Does it matter?

Does having an MP matter? Having a publisher matter? Games are games, the reality is....we don't know who will make the next Portal, or Walking Dead, or Castle Crashers etc.

Indies are still games and who is publishing, if they are owned etc shouldn't really factor in looking for a game.

Great games come from many different places.

Some of my favorite games last gen Walking Dead, Portal, Heavy Rain, LA Noire etc were not the norm of development nor convention in any regard.

Fun fact, Max Payne was done by Remedy when they only had 11 members. Anyone one of those games could be huge surprises. Don't sleep on independent, small teams with big dreams.

Portal did 4 million units...BEFORE a Steam release.

Little Big Planet, passed up by both MS and Nintendo until Media Molecule went to Sony and got it done, the first game did close to 5 million units before the end of 2010 (don't have a current number).

The reality is, we get games that might flop, it happens, Lair, Folklore etc it happens, but at least someone out there is supporting the idea of trying to release some new ideas and concepts.

Will we get some strange games? Sure, will some flop? Probably. But the ones that made the risk, deserve the praise afterwards. We can't just keep getting mad as certain publishers and calling certain games "flops" because they don't' have MP or are not HUGE shooting galleries...yet complain when we get COD every year and AC EVERY YEAR.

To seek those new creative concepts, one must also be in for the fact that they all won't just be JUST like every other game. How can we ask for new ideas, yet are mad that they are also not tradition, MP, co-op, 30 hours etc?

I'm fine with self publishing for BOTH consoles, its something that is really, really needed to breath new life into many gaming genres that many console games don't get to experience.

Strangely, many of the games I'm looking forward to most are not AAA titles. I can't wait for No Man's Sky, Below, Rime, Wild, Inside, Cuphead, Abzu, The Tomorrow Children, Until Dawn, Alienation, Hellblade, What Remains of Edith Finch, Persona 5, Quantum Break, etc. etc. etc. That's not to say I'm not interested in what Sony Santa Monica, Polyphony, Quantic Dream, Media Molecule, Guerilla, Naughty Dog, Sony Bend, Black Tusk, etc. etc. are working on, but I can wait, I guess. The JRPGs are a given. Xbox gamers dont really go for those games anyway So they wont be missed. We already know dragons dogma and NMS will also be on PC ( NMS will eventually end up on X1 aswell. it will be a quick port from PC via DX12). Deep down is not even coming to the west. But good games for those that interested in JRPGs. Of the games you mentioned the only one I care about is the one that is not a JRPG..no mans sky.

I a more interested in GGs new dino mech game. or UC4, GT7 and the next game from suckerpunch (infamous :SS was mediocre but I still have faith in the team. every dev has a few missteps). SF5, Ill be buying on W10 store so it rather cheekily shows up on my xbox gamerscore. Plus everybody knows PC gamers are easy pickings on fighting games. Ill enjoy an unsually high W/L ratio. plus achievements. Could even stream it to my xbox via W10. everybody wins.

I've always enjoyed how Sony separates releases throughout the year for its fans to enjoy instead of over saturating the holiday season with exclusives.

And I really don't see third party exclusives as a priority though in my opinion. I think simple marketing deals like Star Wars Battlefront are enough to compete against the competition, especially during the later part of the year since that's when most third parties are released.

First parties throughout the year and marketing deals with big name third parties during the holiday is honestly a very well thought out business plan for them. I'm just glad I have a lot to play this summer since last summer was very dry game wise. Don't know how anyone could go through that or would want to go through that again.

He is completely wrong, as usual dude. Don't give credit to a liar and an intentionally disingenuous fanboy. Sony has the most upcoming third party exclusives. Persona 5, Street Fighter V, Star Ocean V, upcoming Sega exclusive, upcoming Level-5 exclusive, Square Enix exclusives etc. etc. Third-party marketing and exclusive content deal are not difficult to secure by Sony either, so another one bites the dust.

The only reason Xbox One has all over those pseudo-exclusive third-party exclusives like Tomb Raider, Sunset Overdrive and Ryse up to now is because those devs and publishers had no idea that PS4 would be mirroring the success of the PS2, and almost everybody believed Microsoft was lined up to trounce Sony this generation (silly, but you know).

Securing exclusives like that NOW, now that everybody knows where these consoles stand for this whole generation is going to be incredibly infrequent for Microsoft. Unless they own IPs, it's not going to happen much.

Aussie1 is completely wrong in the assumption of first-party too. Sony has more first-party releases (AND third-party releases) this year than MS does so how sparse does that make the Xbox One lineup? You can look at games like Persona 5 and Until Dawn and scream "niche", but look at what happened to the same people (this guy included) who thought Bloodborne was niche and ended up selling 1 million copies in 12 days. Niche is no longer an excuse.

RiME, for example, is looking to be as significant a game for PS4 as Ico was for PS2 (it's way bigger in scope than Ico too), that is why Sony is supporting it to a first-party degree. Tequila Works is looking to be the next classic Sony studio based on everything we know about RiME. The Xbox guys are ultimately ignoring that because of the dirty "i" word.

Sony already has about 4 times the exclusive games coming out this year than Microsoft, whether its new IP, remaster, sequel or indie. All it would take for the dudebro guys to legitimately accept the truth is if Sony announced a couple of big hitter exclusives for holiday 2015 - something they could easily do.

I think we've settled that these Xbox fanatics can do nothing but talk themselves into a stupor of lies and delusional self-assurance, whilst the PlayStation guys are keeping it real in terms of games and sales.

Ryse was contracted by MS for the 360 as a Kinect game, and if their concept wasn't such a failure it would have been a 360 exclusive. Again... this is before the PS4 was announced or anything was known about sales for this gen.

Sunset was more or less a commercial flop and is still sitting at less than a million sold. Do you really think that Insomniac would not have bargained harder if they knew how badly it would have flopped on their console of choice? They would have gone for Sony and struck a harder bargain, so that their game would actually have been well supported by its true fan base and guaranteed a sequel. A place where their game would not be cannibalised by Halo, since as we know, Sony spaces their games out.

SFV was a result of an ongoing partnership with Sony and Capcom. The game would not have been released until 2018 if Sony wasn't involved to make it happen sooner as Yoshino confirmed. The deal, was a PC version coming out of the "exclusivity" contract.

Microsoft, got timed exclusive rights to Rise of the Tomb Raider, because they invested in the game. If you would of read Phil Spencers article, Microsoft was NOT the first choice when Square were looking for partner(s) to help with funding. And of course Square retains their ownership of the game.

Microsoft got Ryse, because they paid to have Ryse on the One. Crytek allowed to keep IP

Microsoft got Sunset:OD because they paid to have Sunset on the One. They let Insomniac retain the IP.

Sony got Street Fighter on the PS4, because they paid Capcom to get it on the PS4. Capcom keeps the rights.

Games like Madden, CoD, etc... Are different case scenarios than the ones listed above.

If you think any of these companies are above $$$ being thrown at them, you are delusional.

He's saying in this current land scape, it is difficult to secure, because yu also have to compensate for potential sales of the platforms. MS has the cash to throw money around like that, Thats why RoTR, Dead Rising 3, Ryse and Titan Fall were all secured for them.

I'm not worried. 2016 look to be incredible, and we have games that are well on their way which will be given release dates announced for 2016 and beyond. It was a slow burn for PS3 when its generation started. and given Sony's strength in First Party Development, They'll have surprises waiting.

No one is doubting ND with UC4, The New Ratchet and Clank is on its way, SF5 is coming to PS4 in 2016 and I'm sure alot of games announced this year will launch late next year. MS is releasing 4 games in the Fall... Sony has released 2 big AAA releases already (The Order and Bloodborne) another is coming in June (GoW3:R), August (Until Dawn), Sep (Tearaway).

The PS4 has still had many more exclusive games this year thus far in comparison to the competition, does that make the "fanboys, example YOU" of said rival consoles even less supported?

Both consoles have had a very rough start this gen exclusive wise but even Stevie Wonder could see that, while very sparse within itself, the PS4 has had much more consistent flow of exclusives year round. I do not even think that is debatable at this point.

As for the future, as things currently stand (announced games only) XBONE clearly has the broader holiday 2015 lineup but things can change very quickly, Sony could destroy E3 and announce some exclusives no one saw coming for this holiday season or just as likely Microsoft could drop some bombs and strengthen their already strong end of 2015 year line up even further, but that is all guess work at this stage.

Actually it's the opposite. Its the XB1 camp that coined the name "Indie Station", talking about Indies like they are not games or dont matter. However, when the XB1 only get Indies as exclusives since last Nov, only then Indies seem to matter.

Not because the game is published by a big company means it not "Indie". These games are in the vain of Indie. Look at No Man Sky, developed by an independent team, but pushed by Sony.

Whether the game is big or small, the classification doesnt matter. However, if one company releases a series of small games (Sony 2014), and another gets third party exclusives (MS 2014), one is treated as having no games. However, the "no gamez" has been geared towards the PS4 far more as a result of Indie support.

MS pushed price and games during the holidays. That has been their mantra for a while now. This shouldn't distract from other companies with games over 12 months... and that's all kinds of titles.

Niche and small games really aren't one in the same. Tearaway can be treated as a small game (I can't speak for Unfolded however). Persona 5 however is totally niche and in no way small. Those games are incredibly popular.

Ori, sorry to say, is a small game. Amazing as it was, it's a small game.

As for the dry spells, I think Sony's approach might work better, but they don't always release early in the year (Uncharted 3 for example came out during the later months, November to be exact). At the very least, those games that were released earlier in the year that were must-haves can now be bought with the console on Christmas for probably cheaper than an Xbox One with all of the new full-priced games that just came out.

So far, we see Microsoft as having the better holiday lineup, but that can change after E3 and, even if not, there may be more games to get for cheaper on PS4.

Sony has both plenty of exclusive PS4 games, and plenty of 3rd party marketing deals. They have both.

PS4 has many exclusive AAA games already, with many more to come. That includes Uncharted 4, The Last of Us 2, God of War 4, Gran Turismo 7, Horizon, and new games from Sucker Punch, Media Molecule, Japan Studio, Guerilla Cambridge, Sony Bend, Sony London, Evolution Studios, and Quantic Dream.

Obviously House can't talk about anything that could get announced at E3, that's releasing in the Fall.
Sony are rumored to have some other big exclusives, but people will have to wait and see what happens at E3 on that front.

Fergal Gara said Sony aren't concerned about their Fall line-up, so they must have surprises to bring to the table.

Sony has already had a couple of big games, Until Dawn is on the way, Tearaway Unfolded and Fat Princess Adventures were also slated for Summer.
Many developers that released games in 2012 and 2013 haven't announced anything new since so some other exclusives are probably likely for Fall.
Maybe 1st party won't releasing anything, but a couple of 2nd party partners could have new games.

Sony should have the easiest time out of anyone when it comes to securing 3rd party exclusives for their system, simply because PS4's install base and ability to move software is much greater than XBox One or Wii U, obviously PC is a different animal altogether.

We'll see come E3 I guess. I also have a weird feeling that Star Wars Battlefront and Call of Duty might sell more than Halo

Xbox 360 had a huge selection of indies, but Sony fans like you probably never acknowledged them when they compared exclusives and have always bragged about their AAA exclusives. This generation they're hugging onto them because AAA releases have declined sharply this generation in both quantity and quality. Not to mention many AAAs that get released were given very divided reception like Killzone SF, inFamous SS, The Order, Driveclub, etc.

PS4 had a very dry last year with only two major exclusive games, one being a complete disaster at launch, but fans have repeatedly said 2015 will be the year, etc. Now that the year is here, sadly it's nothing like it has been cracked up to be. I think 2015 will be equal for both PS and Xbox. I don't see what makes the PS lineup any better when MS has some of their major franchises while Sony delayed both Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted 4. I sure I`ll get marked for trolling. And a ton of disagrees. But just face it. Sony is a sinking ship. There is no Exclusives. Or should i say delayed Exclusives, because they do not have the money.
Its just a matter of time before they fold. Enjoy the PS4 because it will be there last.

Here's why I need a PS4 (or a xbox one)

- To replay the last generations games at 1080P cause ps3 720P GOW suck.

- So I can play Pc Indy games ports that could easily been made on my ps3.

- To experience the joy of 1 gig day 1 patch and buggy launch games (and they say Internet isn't mandatory).

- Cross Play with my Vita, Wii U, Android the bear.. Never mind
(Hey I just found out that I can buy the same pc steam Indy ports on my Vita and 3ds so what's the purpose of these new system again)

In the end This gen basically suck and isn't getting better
So It's About time that some people from Sony acknowledge the truth!

Maybe now the focus will be back on creating stuff for the gamer instead of milking the past generation for the casual players

Dumped my X1 and may regret but oh well there wasn't crap for it that I wanted. Waited for BELOW, Quantum is apparently dust till next year and done played GEARS trilogy so many times that meh. But in the same context if they said GEARS trilogy is available that day as a free download for gold members, I'd do it. I really only want a solid CRACKDOWN sequel.

You don't say... I've always been a PS gamer, mostly because of their 1st party offerings. The quality and sheer amount was amazing, in the past, but now I don't know what happened. It's been 2 years, WTF is going on? I know a lot of people found out about the PS4's existence at the reveal but did they keep those that a secret from even their own 1st party studios? I know a few have been canned but man... the wait is long.

So far, this generation has been pretty light on exclusives, especially AAA.. no, games in general. I guess it's just a nature of the business these days. My fingers are crossed that these game studios, all of them across Xbox/Sony/Nintendo, have games to show us. The struggle is real!

Well duh. Sony is too poor to afford AAA games. They have to rely on indie games , multiplatform games and their brand recognition this generation.
