Splatoon features Nintendo's best use of amiibo yet

Day one DLC is a tricky thing. If it's too good, people will howl that it should have been in the stand alone game at launch. If it sucks, then you can bet your sweet bippy that dogs will hunt. All of that goes triple for anything amiibo related. Those little plastic things make a lot of people very emotional. Maybe it's something in the paint.

Day 1 DLC that is on the disc, and locked away from the user until they pay an extra fee should never be encouraged or defended like this.

It is a horrible policy. Just because it is Nintendo and because you get a nice little figurine does not and should not change this.

It's not DLC. Hero Mode is meant to be played with the Splattershot, and scanning in Amiibo just allows you to take on some levels with a different weapon. There's no content "locked away from the user," and if it weren't for Amiibo, you wouldn't be able to access these challenges anyway.

That literally makes no sense whatsoever.

`If it weren't for Amiibo, you wouldn't be able to access these challenges anyway.`

So if I dont pay extra money for an amiibo, I would not be ablt to access the challenges (and the gear that comes with these challenges, and the mini games that are unlocked from these challenges) that exist on the disc I buy?

That is content that is locked away behind a paywall. That is a form of day 1 dlc.

How many Amiibo's are confirmed to hold content that was literally STRIPPED FROM THE GAMES to be held by the figures, rather than holding content that was specifically designed for the figures to hold?
What sources confirm said content was stripped?

Let's not pretend that Amiibo's are Destiny Reduxe without some evidence that the content within was developed for the main games then stripped out.

Amiibos do not hold DLC data. Their data is is an unlock key to data that is already on the disc.

Codename STEAM, Mario Party 10 and now Splatoon will all have content that was available on their discs, but which required a user to pay extra for an amiibo to get access to it.

Same goes for Kirby and Yoshi, but those are more designed to make the game easier. Other amiibo games had their content added via a patch.

In every case, the amiibo is just a key: its not the DLC.

Reeze3689d ago

That's not what I said. These challenges exist BECAUSE of Amiibo. Nintendo thought, "what could we add for people who buy Amiibo? How about extra challenges?" If the Wii U didn't support Amiibo functionality, you would not be able to play Hero Mode with different weapons. That's it.

You could say the same thing about any other Amiibo. Stop talking about things you know nothing about.

I wouldn't know, since I can't even access the demo. Third 'testfire' and they can't even get the servers working.

Nintendo is losing a ton of sales, no one wants to buy a game that won't work at launch, and that's what this crap is telling customers.

Happening to people everywhere, and no it's not my setup or location.

Testfire worked without a hitch for literally everyone I've spoken to. It did take me 2-3 attempts to get in but after that it was perfect.

wonderfulmonkeyman3689d ago (Edited 3689d ago )

I got into two matches this time, but crappy internet on my end held me back from playing them through to completion.
After that, the server was too crowded to get another match. (according to another article I read, it got so overcrowded that we actually brought down the service completely around 3:13)
The first two test fires, though, I was able to get in just fine and play many matches through to completion.

These stress tests have been a perfect example of "your mileage may vary" cases. But since these are only test servers, I'm sure the final product will be more solid, either right off the bat or not long afterwards.

$40 is absolutely ridiculous. $15 made sense, but you can literally get full on games for $40… what in the hell is going on?

PapaBop69d ago

$40? wtf that is insane. I got a few sometime ago and those things should be more like $15 tops for the quality of them. Nintendo going to Nintendo though, people will still pay $40 and scalpers will charge double that and idiots will still pay.
