An Eye-Melting Look at The Witcher 3's Foliage in 4K at Ultra Settings

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has some of the best looking foliage of any game, ever. Just how good does the foliage look on a 4-way Titan X SLI super gaming computer? There's only one way to find out.

4 GTX and still the damn foliage doesn't have most of them their own dynamic shadow ?, oh yeah very very impreeeesiveeee... ughh. :/

_-EDMIX-_3651d ago (Edited 3651d ago )

lol, so 4 Titans.....for ultra setting in 4k? I mean I'll be sticking to the PS4 version on high. I don't even think when I build my next PC I'll be able to play this game maxed out on 4k.

can't stop laughing! Own 1 titan card.....

Well bro, 3 more titan cards get you fancy grass doe.

sorane3651d ago

You're an idiot if you think it requires 4x titans to play this at 4k. No wonder you've lost so many bubbles lately. Here's a hint: Just because someone uses 4x titans to play a game it doesn't mean said games requires 4x titans. Of course you're the troll that keeps trying to convince people that the ps4 is really 3.6 teraflops because of some "hidden power" you think it has. Sounds a lot like a xbox troll I know that has his own website......

" I mean I'll be sticking to the PS4 version on high."

From Digital foundry in the description: "We recommend these settings in order to mirror console as closely as possible with the available presets.

V-Sync: On
Resolution: 1920x1080
Nvidia Hairworks: Off
Number of Background Characters: Low (console actually seems lower than this)
Shadow Quality: Medium
Terrain Quality: Medium
Water Quality: High
Grass Density: Medium
Texture Quality: Ultra
Foliage Visibility Range: Medium
Detail Level: Medium
Ambient Occlusion: SSAO
All post effects on except vignetting"

PS4 On high... HAHAHAHA... what an idiot you are. A mediocre PC outperforms your Toys R Us box.

Pandamobile3651d ago (Edited 3651d ago )

You can't cast shadows from 2D billboards without significant artifacting.

Until every lick of grass and foliage is rendered to actual polygons, that's not going to happen. Nvidia has something like that as part of their GameWorks package, but it's still a ways off from being implemented into real games (especially ones that have to run on consoles).
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

HBAO does a pretty solid job of creating soft shadows for foliage in the mean time.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3651d ago

They cast shadows on 2d tree limbs... why not grass?

Pandamobile3651d ago

Tree limbs have articulated geometry.

_-EDMIX-_3651d ago

Thats some complex junk! Looks like I might be getting a Titan card instead.

starchild3651d ago (Edited 3651d ago )

@masterfox

Your're very mistaken. Only the shorter grass doesn't cast shadows, all of the taller foliage like shrubs and trees do cast shadows and are self shadowing as well. All of the foliage also has volume based translucency. Much of it also exhibits specular highlights typical of physically based rendering. On top of all that, all of the foliage is dynamic and flutters and sways in the wind.

You can nitpick anything, but show me another game with the same huge quantity of foliage that's being rendered in The Witcher 3 and with the technical properties I mentioned above.

For an example of some of those things (e.g. shadowing, translucency, self shadowing) look at the shrubs and trees in this shot: http://i.imgur.com/3TfBd3h....

enough with the foliage already! gadamn! if i wanted to look at flowers i would go outside and look at them in eye-melting-realism. if i wanted to play an immersive, story-driven rpg, i would play witcher 3. that is all.

The video quality of this video, even at 4k, is pathetic.

I'm impressed people find this impressive

Outthink_The_Room3651d ago

I'm not even trying to troll or anything, but I agree, that was not impressive.

The density of the foliage is one thing. In other words, how much foliage there actually is covering the ground everywhere.

But graphically, it doesn't look "next-gen" to me.

starchild3651d ago

What is the standard here by which you are judging it? I mean, obviously we aren't at a point where each leaf and blade of grass can be rendered as fully geometrically-3D models. Especially not for a huge open-world game with the quantity of foliage The Witcher 3 has.

But if The Witcher 3's foliage isn't "next-gen" enough to impress you, then what is? It's not like most other games are doing foliage so much better (even though they're rendering far less of it).

Here are some examples to jog your memory.

ive been playing on a 970 at ultra, minus HBAO+. While its at 1080p, I dont think it looks that great. A lot of the plants kind of look like blobs that just blow around. I dont see the "individual blades of grass" at all. I think its the wind that hides it and makes it look impressive.

kraenk123651d ago

why would you play without HBAO+?! I play it on my 970 and it performs admirably smooth with HBAO+ on! Just needed to lower the foliage to high. Much better tradeoff.

matrixman923651d ago

thanks, i'll try that out. Couldnt even keep a steady 30 fps with that on and everything at ultra

Perjoss3651d ago

hm so much compression in this video, I've uploaded high res videos to youtube before and they had far less compression than this, I'm guessing they either had a bad setting for the video capture or they used some kind of quick/low quality rendering option on their vid editing software.

_LarZen_3651d ago

The day that kind of GPU power is something everyone can afford. Is most likely long after I am dead and buried.

This is a great month for me, I have almost bought Wild Hearts a ton of times and same for Cult of the Lamb.

Some really good variety here, and some serious playtime on offer here with all the RPG's. Good luck finishing all these games in a month heh.

Time Splitters is fantastic on the classic side, and glad to see they keep supporting PSVR2 with games

TheEroica279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

Really grateful I had the good sense to drop pay to play multi-player. It's a rip off.

Einhander1972279d ago

At least when you buy the basic PS+ tier you actually get new games often including AAA games.

This month PS+ got the Star Wars Skywalker Saga, Five Nights at Freddy's:: Security Breach, and Ender Lilies

Xbox hasn't gotten any new games for their basic tier since July and before that it was in August 2023. And if that wasn't bad enough the games they got were just recycled from game pass.

TheEroica278d ago

14 people downvoted and enjoy paying for something millions of pc gamers get for free. Lol.

seanpitt23279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

They could have included the dlc for the Witcher 3 game of the year addition geez..

How many times do they want to keep putting WD2 on

Einhander1972279d ago

PS+ 17 games this month unlike game pass which only offered 7 almost half of them I got years ago on PS+,.and the rest are indies from companies I haven't even heard of.

And the Sony Pictures movie collection will probably get updated with new movies and shows from Crunchy Roll too.

Not bad for a subscription that costs significantly less game pass even before they raised the prices.

crazyCoconuts279d ago

Still not as good as it was a year ago. I think they're walking back on the quality of games just like XBGP is. It's a good thing though...ppl gotta start buying games again.

darthv72279d ago

For me, the redeeming titles are the Time Splitters ones. Sadly i do not subscribe to premium, only extra.

VersusDMC279d ago

Well you can still buy them. PS2 titles range from 5 (the clone wars) to 20 (tomb raider legend). So it may be a good price.

Becuzisaid279d ago

I'd bet these are in the expensive side. People have been wanting some kind of timesplitters remaster for a long time now.

pwnmaster3000279d ago

I thought it was a pretty good month, then I saw time splitter. It made it so much better. I always wanted to play this game but never did

Deeeeznuuuts279d ago

Not the best month for me other than timesplitters!! Can't wait to replay them again, be nice if they have trophies too but no danger of they don't, can't wait!
