The Witcher 3 get´s in trouble over sexist game design

CD Projekt RED has once again caused a lot of rants over a new "The Witcher" title. And "The Witcher 3" is no exception. As the game has been accused of being both "sexist" and "misogynist".

As it´s said that "The Witcher 3´s" game design is full of sexism and misogyny. But is that really the case?

DarkOcelet3672d ago (Edited 3672d ago )

Everyone who says this games is sexist needs to calm down and enjoy the game. This game has no effect on your life whatsoever except maybe losing 300 hours of your life playing it :P

Seriously, enjoy the game for what it is.

Off Topic: Polygon should seriously be removed from N4G for its BS clickbait reviews.

TGG_overlord3672d ago

Me and my two brothers LOVE The Witcher 3. It´s one of the best action/RPG games ever made. The game is a must buy for everyone that enjoys games of that kind.

And you´re 100% right. Pttt! Polygon...

I never played a Witcher game before, but I just started Witcher 2 last week (skipped The Witcher) and so far I'm really liking it. I just finished the prologue and now it seems like the world is going to open up. I can't say I'm hooked yet, but I have that feeling that I'm about to be.

Erik73573672d ago (Edited 3672d ago )

Imagine seeing the main protagonist in a thong with a see through shirt on....imagine how awkward that is for you playing the game to be forced to stare at that....this is how a woman feels seeing female characters like this....but hey you can just enjoy the game who cares if you would have to stare at the ass cheeks of Geralt of Rivia for 300 hours.I'm sure from the female perspective women would be spouting the same thing your saying about this if you were complaining about males dressed in sexually revealing clothing....

Though the sexism in this game is not bad nor is it taken to that extreme....but that's the point im trying to make..you would be annoyed and bothered if they had males dressed in sexual clothing ALLL the time....

DarkOcelet3672d ago

LOL!

Um, MGS 2 had a man naked with his @ss in your face lol. I found that to be funny, weird but laughable.

Vampire The Bloodline Masquerade had a male protagonist who walked in the most stupidest way i seen in my whole life but because i was so immersed in the game, i forgot all about it in the first 5 minutes.

So to answer your question, i think people should seriously enjoy life a bit and stop nitpicking everything in front of them.

Sketchy_Galore3671d ago

Yeah imagine if a game introduced a male character with his legs sticking out of a bathtub then panning the camera slowly up the rest of his naked bathing body. Imagine if he was forced to walk around topless for periods of the game or wearing nothing but a tiny towel.

You people don't know the true horror of a woman having to look at another woman's body with the aesthetically pleasing parts highlighted. As we all know, the female body is an ugly ugly thing and should always be hidden away. That's as obvious as the fact that a woman cannot be a sexual being and also have other worthwhile qualities.

Women who do not hide their sexuality are either weak willed fools allowing themselves to be exploited by men, or filthy worthless whores who cannot possibly be intelligent or feeling human beings. To disagree with this is to be against social progress.

Allsystemgamer3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

You see geralt naked all the damn time and during fist fightin segments he's shirtless. I'm a straight male. Do I care? NO! I've seen ONE female dressed in sexual clothing so far and she was naked. For 2 seconds.

You SJWs NEVER do any research for your claims.

I'm 50 hours into the game btw

@sketchy

Don't know if that was a joke Or not because the opening of the game geralt is naked with a perfectly sculpted body and then walks around in a towel while his lover is dressing and he's naked.

Anthotis3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

I doubt normal men would play such a game that was aimed at gay men. They wouldn't try to censor or ban it, either.

The Witcher is clearly a game made for normal men, so the people who can't appreciate that i.e. SJWs, insecure feminists and other anti-male puritans, can avoid it if they don't like it.

Good luck trying to pressure or infiltrate & warp a studio like CDPR.

Erik73573671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

Like I said in my comment a "little" is okay every now in then...nothing is wrong with the something appealing sexy. But the points you are making have a flaw...he is not naked 100% throughout most of the game.....the way the female characters are dressed....it's not like its for one scene or anything...your stuck with it for the whole game.
Should of been more specific in my comment, thought people would understand what im meaning. Not just a scene but throughout the whole game.

But Witcher 3's sexism is not a problem...I would hardly call it "sexist" like this article claims it is. My comment and this comment is more directed towards the people down playing sexsism in games for females.

@DarkOcelet

Nudity is fine........imagine playing as snake with no shirt on throughout the whole game...it would be f*cking stupid....this is what a lot of female gamers feel like when they see a half naked girl character throughout a whole game. Witcher 3 does not do this...but I could name a few games that do.

Spotie3671d ago

Dude, that analogy was crap. You have no clue what you're talking about.

Dark

Couldn't agree more. Why do we force our opinions on developers? Why can't we accept gaming as an outlet for entertainment

I am sure movie directors do whatever they want abd if you don't like their movie so what?

I hate this idea that a developer not only has to deliver but also meet our very stupid demand

I really hate polygon

They will never be removed from n4g because like otger sites, n4g is also looking for hits and comments

Polygon are a true disgrace in gaming community

You don't like what the witcher 3 offers don't play it. You got a free copy so why the heck are you complaining polygon? Oh so the game is amazing but we still have to find things to hate about so we get the hits on our site

I hope this wins goty just to say F off to polygon

DarkOcelet3671d ago

I wonder what kind of flak MGSV will be getting for its content?

I expect an extremely dumb review from Polycrap.

OrangePowerz3671d ago (Edited 3671d ago )

The only article I have seen calling it sexist are the twats from Polygon.

It's a fantasy in a medieval setting. Guess what, women didn't get treated that well in medieval times.

It's also worth adding that the twat who wrote the Witcher 3 review for Polygon is a fan of Game if Thrones. A series full of sexism, rape and incest, but that's ok because he likes Game of Thrones.

Ah grow up already man. Its just a game which by the way I am really enjoying and did I forget to mention how massive the map is :L

ThatEnglishDude3672d ago

Oh for crying out loud. Shut your mouth and get a life if it bothers you that much.

Jalva3672d ago

Games with women that aren't playable = misogynistic
Games without women = sexist
Games with female leads = rapist AI

Feminists really know what they want.

Nyxus3671d ago

What game doesn't get accused of that, these days?

Not only CDPR but Epic Games as well i still haven't seen any game with that fidelty of that Ps5 tech demo .. that was 2020

VenomUK2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Digital Foundry in its reaction video said they believe the demo reflects real performance, as overstating it’s competence on PS5 could bring significant risks to Epic Games’ shareholders and legal risks.

Actually Horizon Forbidden West exceeds this in image quality. So it seems very plausible. Intergalactic is actually beyond this presntation in IQ, RT and resolution and thats locked 60FPS as well. As far as the usage of hardware RT in UE, they were able to reduce the CPU overhead.

This was a tech demo for UE 5.6. That was clearly stated and is evident by the presentation itself where several of the new features of UE are highlighted

This article title is inaccurate because this was not a demo for Witcher 4. It was a technical demonstration of Unreal Engine 5.6.

Christopher2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

***Cyberpunk 2077’s gameplay features that were showcased in initial footage but never made it into the final game***

They literally made a big deal of telling everyone that they changed the gameplay of CP2077 during development and then did a new demo of the game with the new gameplay. There was no hiding this to the public. CP2077's problem with the buggy as heck and obviously too early release.

This is really bad journalism to promote this line of thinking. It's an attempt to rewrite history. You can definitely say you preferred the initial demo, but they were very open and clear when they moved from third-person to first-person that it would include major changes in gameplay and showed those off multiple times a year prior to the game's release.

---

As to the point of this article? Yeah, the whole event is a marketing event. I don't trust anything until it's released, tbh. No matter who is making it. I can still be excited by what I see, but it's not going to get me to pre-order a game or get me to go out there and sell what I saw as if it will be just like that in the full release.

neutralgamer19922d ago

What about the fact CDPR showed gameplay behind closed doors which wasn't real? They dusnt allow anyone to bring their phones or any tech so once media came out of that gameplay reveal CP2077 was hyped to the moon and back. CDPR didn't show console gameplay so let's not act like they were transparent when they switched from 3rd to 1st person when they lied at launch of the game

Christopher2d ago

You mean rumors? You want me to comment on rumors from Bloomberg? We arguing the belief of rumors now and not news?

Here's that fake demo - https://www.youtube.com/wat...

If you've played the game, you know how much that lines up with the final product. That's what I know.

***let's not act like they were transparent when they switched from 3rd to 1st person when they lied at launch of the game***

They literally re-demoed the game with the change, so they were transparent. You're just acting like they weren't when in 2018 they literally demoed the new gameplay. That's 2 years prior to release.

I don't know what they 'lied at launch of the game' is supposed to mean.

-

This game had enough wrong with it at release that we don't need to be arguing rumors and online hatred of the gameplay changes shown in 2018.

neutralgamer19922d ago

Christopher, just to clarify — I'm not trying to be overly negative or dismissive. I fully acknowledge that CD Projekt Red was transparent when they switched from third-person to first-person and even re-demoed the game to reflect that. Credit where it’s due — they did show that change publicly.

But the real issue for me is how the game launched. Despite that transparency earlier on, they deliberately withheld gameplay from the console versions and still charged full price for something that was nowhere near ready. That’s where trust was broken. The game was released in a clearly unfinished and broken state, and it took years to get it into a playable condition. That goes beyond mistakes — that’s a serious failure in leadership and consumer respect.

So when I see something like the Witcher 4 tech demo — and yes, I understand it’s Epic showcasing Unreal Engine 5 — I can’t help but approach it with caution. It’s not blind skepticism, but earned skepticism. A lot of the original developers have left CDPR, so we can’t assume this next game will automatically reach Witcher 3 levels of excellence.

I want it to be amazing. We all do. But I’m not going to fully believe the hype until independent gamers and trusted content creators — people with a reputation for honesty and not being paid off — get their hands on it and say, “Yes, this is great.” Until then, it’s just marketing.

They built up enormous goodwill after The Witcher 3 and the free DLCs — but they lost much of that with Cyberpunk's release. Even platform holders like PlayStation and Xbox, who once trusted CDPR to self-certify, don’t anymore. That alone speaks volumes.

Again, it’s not hate — it’s caution born from experience

CrimsonIdol2d ago

"Despite that transparency earlier on, they deliberately withheld gameplay from the console versions"
It was a multiplatform release, and yes they botched it, but clearly consoles weren't lead development platform, PC was. They clearly were hoping that they could get everything together by launch, and this was a mistake. I think them showing this running on a PS5 is a clear indicator that they've learnt from this.

But there are plenty of reasons not to get too excited about this, and it's not hidden behind any lies, it's right there watermarked on the footage. this is a technical presentation of the Unreal 5 engine, running on the PS5 at 60fps. This is technology that may be in the Witcher, this is not the Witcher.

Lightning772d ago

Because it is marketing. Epic did the flying sand girl in 2020 now this with Witcher. I still wanna see what games shows the original showing of Unreal 5? It's been 5 years exactly.

Michiel19892d ago

ofc it is, no real gameplay suddenly xrays a horse to show how its muscles are moving realistically.

CrimsonIdol2d ago

It literally had text telling you it wasn't gameplay.

Extermin8or3_1d 20h ago

They were literally showing off the fact it seamlessly can transition from gameplay to ctsceme those aspects of presentation were clear cutscenes....
