The Underwhelming Generation

FilmGamesEtc - When I was gearing up for the seventh generation consoles and Blu Ray, I bought a top of the line 1080p television in early 2007 to experience all the Playstation 3 and what the HD graphics of the Xbox 360 I already owned had to offer.

well done my good man. Great read and I am in the same boat, with 50" 4k tvs at the price now they dropped the ball

mikeslemonade3261d ago

People lack a educated perspective. The 360 didn't have the "current gen" graphics aside for Gears and Oblivion early on. PS3 was heavily bashed for being $600.

The truth is many of you people who claim to own a PS3 and 360 most likely didn't own them until 2 or 3 years after they launched. So of course if you didn't own the system yet you probably didn't here all the negativity.

got my ps3 day 1 and xbox360 4 months and 15 days after launch

someOnecalled3261d ago (Edited 3261d ago )

got my ps3 a couple months late in the summer. im glad i did too. BC and bluray made it worth even more. bluray player was over $800 at that time. most of the people that i know that brought the console didnt have a problem with the price. we did complain about the subpar games in the beginning. i dont get what you mean about gfx the gfx was great on both consoles when they launch it even took pc a year to look as good unlike today. ps3 was bash for the price but i think it was mainly due to hate and a lack of good games at launch.

i also find it funny people said the same thing about 1080p that they are saying about 4k. 1080p tvs can down in price fast. imma buy a 4k tv most likely next year

I love Wii U though...and excited for E3 as much as ever.

Almost none of the games on PS3 are in native 1080p even some are below 720p even though they all say 1080p on the box which means they are just upscaled and that's nothing like the 1080p on PS4. If the PS4 didn't have such a weak cpu from AMD most of the games probably would run at 1080p and 60fps. But it seems developers are struggling to find ways around the huge cpu bottleneck and release the game with bad performance anyway.

kraenk123261d ago (Edited 3261d ago )

A CPU is hardly the factor for higher framerates and the PS4 GPU already has 50% more rendering units and faster RAM than the XB1. There is a time where expectations just become unrealistic.
The high adoption rate this gen proves the 400$ strategy right. Noone owill own a 4k TV anyway for years to come and 1080p is completely sufficient for now.

As always the PC is the right choice for people who want a bit more.

Golden Axe is a great game I enjoyed it on the SMS, Genesis and in the arcade. Great game but it truly was a quarter eater back in the day. I wish Sega could get the rights to the arcade port of Moonwalker another great arcade game I enjoyed. Collect so many monkeys and become Robo Michael lol.

70 percent of devs unsure of live-service games sustainability

With so many games fighting for players' attention and interest losing out over time, time sink games are at risk of eventually losing steam.

It was worrisome to begin with.

It's a niche genre with only a handful of hits that can stand the test of time.

Cacabunga18h ago

I like the sound of that!! I will for sure never support these gaas games.
Sony must be shocked at gamer's reaction, making them cancel a few of these and hopefully go back to the good heavy hitters they had us used to..
now bring on that PSPro reveal and show us some SP 1st party awesomeness.

CrimsonWing691d 14h ago

What’s to be unsure of!? Look at the ratio of success to failure!

DarXyde21h ago

It's pretty ridiculous.

Imagine having a breadth of data at your disposal to see the statistically low success rate of these games, only to be laser focused on the exceptional case studies.

shinoff21831d 13h ago

Yes. Stop all the live service bs.

jznrpg1d 13h ago

Only a few will catch on. You need a perfect storm to be successful in GaaS and a bit of luck on top of that. But a potential cash cow will keep them trying and some will go out of business because of it.

Helldivers 2 manages just fine…

Keep production costs low… don’t just make custscenes until the mechanics and enemies are perfected first.

Make so much content that you can drip extra content for years, and the game already feels complete without them.

Most importantly: make weapons, enemies, levels, and mechanics that will stand the test of 1000 hours. This might require more devs embracing procedurally generated leveled, which I think separates Helldivers 2 from Destiny’s repetitiveness.
