PS4 reaches 2m sales in the UK

2m PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold in the UK, MCV can reveal.

Sony’s home console sailed past the milestone over the weekend, and reaches this level faster than it managed to with PlayStation 2. The machine is currently the best-selling UK games console for 2015 so far.

ArchangelMike3272d ago

Wow, the PS4 is selling at a faster rate that the PS2?!? Well colour me dumbfounded! Sony found the secret sauce again.

Griever3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

Congrats to Sony and PS4 fans. I am glad that Playstation is back on top again and JRPGs are getting a revival. Games are becoming more diverse too. That period of domination by the Xbox in the last gen killed a lot of genres of games and we lost much diversity. It was like some dark ages of gaming where mostly we got shooters and sports games. Japanese developers lost their way, Japanese franchises got westernized/bastardized and many studios that created our favorite niche games shut down. I shudder when remembering that era. I started to think that JRPGs were gone for good. I was so happy to hear the Star Ocean 5 and Persona 5 announcements exclusively for Playstation and the overwhelming positive reception they got. It is all because of the PS4; its massive sales revived the Japanese developers.

rezzah3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

I hope this domination of the PS4 will bring back the good old days, or at least shift what the industry is now towards what it once was (Capcom making good games again, subjective I know).

I like that you mention the previous generation to be a "dark age" with the reasons that followed, never thought of it like that.

MightyNoX3272d ago

@rezzah: We're getting a heap of old IP revivals thanks to Sony's dominance. A rising tide lifts all boats.

When MS was leading the mainstream (ignoring the Wii), it was ugly period with very little variety.

bouzebbal3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

great success for Sony, but to me as a gamer i thought that the huge gap would mean more games from previous generations. Well i am still waiting for something big from PSone era.
Despite PS4 having great games, I am very disappointed of Sony's claims of bringing back the classics, and that was the reason number one i was excited for PS4 in the very beginning.
What stops them from developing a Legend of Dragoon sequel, or even a remake?
PS2 and PS1 are back, but only sales wise so far...unfortunately!

MasterCornholio3272d ago

@Mighty

Don't forget about Sony saving Japanese developers. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have a revival of JRPGs.

remixx1163272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

Yes last gen was a sad annoying mix of shoorters/sports games/motion control games. It was definitely dark with a steep decline in jrpgs and originality, and the increase of Michael Bay~esque game titles and riduculouly high budgetd has corrupted gamer mentality into thinking that anything that's not AAA and doesn't have troy baker in it isn't even worth getting.......even if its stuffed with season passes, day one dlc so on and so forth all of which were brought with the corruption of last gen............last gen was terrible.

But here we are gents, a new horizon. Sonys back on top, Phil spencers running xbox and Nintendo is finally stepping out of the gimmicky dark.

Jrpgs galore fellas, persona 5, star ocean 5, disgeae 5, dragon quest heroes, bloodborne, deep down, Ys....Sonys just lapping them up and we have Level 5s new project on the way, new tales game moving onto ps4 and the like. Not to mention big names like FFXV and kingdom hearts 3.......can you guys smell the renaissance.

bouzebbal3272d ago

@MasterCornholio:

which revival of JRPGs? did i miss an episode?
it's the same series from PS3 that keep coming (except Ys episode for PS4, i give you that).
Even PS3 came out with a great Action RPG, Folklore.
As of now PS4 has no JRPG on the market, they are all work in progress. PS4 has massive lead but JRPGs aren't out yet, and those already announced are just continuity from PS3 (star Ocean...)
We also want classics revival like Dragon Quest RPG, some Dark Cloud...

breakpad3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

@ GRiever @ MightynoX exactly ...i cant agree more ...X360 era nearly killed gaming as we knew it ..(to be fair Nintendo with their gimmicky underpowered consoles are also to blame as they had nothing to offer, except some stolen IPs which alternatively would thrive on PS3) ...and a lot of moneygrabbing innovations of MS are still plaguing gaming (DLC, subscriptions , paid-multiplayer) as Sony followed them too. After Bloodborne i start having hopes that some old school (or fairer) gaming may comeback

Gazondaily3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

Congrats to Sony but it is rather sad that you guys just couldn't help bring XBox into it could you? Surprise surprise MightNOx is here to blame the Xbox 360 for all the ills in the gaming industry.

Well, just for some perspective, before you're quick to blame the 360 for problems that you laughably attributed to it, may I remind you how the PS4 started off last gen?

Ken Kutaragi (regarded as the father of PlayStation):

""The PS3 is not a game machine. We've never once called it a game machine...With the PS3, our intentions have been to create a machine with supercomputer calculation capabilities for home entertainment."

"We want consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one.' We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else." Real classy. This is Mattrick level idiocy.

@ MightNox

"When MS was leading the mainstream (ignoring the Wii), it was ugly period with very little variety

Lmao. What a load of bull. It isn't MS' fault that the PS4 started off terribly. That ugly period where MS schooled the console world with its online space (to such a degree that it took a whole generation for Sony to catch up), with an easy to develop for console that was embraced by devs and the masses.

Its weird that you blame that 'ugly period' on MS when Sony have clearly learned from and incorporated so many ideas inspired by MS (from social functionality to the easy to design for console etc).

Here's an idea; stop proving the stereotype about Sony fanboys right and enjoy (if you have to) the sales of the PS4 in the UK. Sales matter right? Good.

[what's with the influx of Sony fanboys infesting the site recently more than usual? I'm seeing very high numbers]

miyamoto3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

I am glad I am not the only one who understands and see what is happening and what happened.

Here on N4G I got slammed and debbubled for saying the same things you guys are saying now when this site is so full of Xbox 360 extremists.

I know the US military is somewhat behind the big budgeted FPS games last generation as a means of "recruiting" more soldiers in the American Armed Forces which helped that American console brand.

This is why the Japanese were caught off guard on how high the FPS games' budgets are. Its still going on today but the PS4 will bring balance to the ecosystem of the industry.

Japanese games are in for a Second Invasion thanks to PS4 and there will be peace and prosperity in gaming.

Quantity of Quality has come via PS4.
Stay Vigilant Gamers!

@septic360

"[what's with the influx of Sony fanboys infesting the site recently more than usual? I'm seeing very high numbers]"

Its comments like yours that makes the many gamers get a PS4 instead of an Xbox including 360 owners.

Thank you very much for selling the PS4 like Mr. Don Mattrick, Septic.
We appreciate it very, very much because its a "secret sauce" that you will never understand why.

Jajajajajajajajajajaja!

Imalwaysright3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

lol xbox domination in the japanese market? Xbox had 0 influence in Japan! If anything the lack of Jrpgs last gen was due to the PS3 architecture. It was extremely difficult to develop for and required a lot more resources than previous generations. Resources that japanese studios didn't have but this is N4g and MS is to blame for everything.

Gazondaily3272d ago

@Imalwaysright

Yeah somehow the people on here seem to think that Sony were these poor little victims besieged by Microsoft last gen.

If JRPG's weren't forthcoming on the PS4 then blame Sony or the devs for not making those games. Ironically, one of the best JRPG's was Lost Odyssey on the Xbox 360 last gen.

The victim act is ridiculous and I suspect duplicate accounts are being made here; how else could you explain the sheer number of agrees for ill informed and frankly ridiculous statements?

Griever3272d ago

@Septic and similar others

People hold MS and Xbox responsible because they are the ones who introduced DLC, online multiplayer and shooters to the gaming industry. Suddenly CoD, Halo, Far Cry, GoW and other shooters became the most selling IPs. People stopped buying and playing what Japanese made including JRPGs, horror, turn-based games, strategy RPGs, hack and slash etc. Sony had to follow suit and adapt as well. If they did made the traditional japanese games, they were always a victim of poor sales. As a result, they tried westernizing their games to make them similar to the games being launched by Xbox. Silent Hill, DMC and Resident Evil were all westernized and killed. Eventually, they shelved those franchises believing they will not sell. Did you Xbox not fans notice all this happening?? Probably because you people were happy with the shooterfest going on.

Griever3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

@Septic and similar others

I am amazed the people run websites but are unaware of the events that occurred in the past decade. People hold MS and Xbox responsible because they are the ones who introduced DLC (the mother of microtransactions that we are plagued by today), patches/updates, online multiplayer and shooters to the console gaming industry. Suddenly CoD, Halo, Far Cry, Battlefield, GoW and other shooters became the most selling IPs in the world. Every developer/publisher tried to make a shooter and make some money. As a result, EA and Activision became the evil money-hungry, nickel and diming giants they are today. Many good games commercially flopped and studios shut down because people were addicted to online multiplayer shooters.

People stopped buying and playing what Japanese made including JRPGs, horror, turn-based games, strategy RPGs, platformers, hack and slash etc. Sony had to follow suit and adapt as well. If they did make the traditional Japanese games, they were always a victim of poor sales. As a result, they tried westernizing their games to make them similar to the ones being launched by Xbox. Silent Hill, DMC, Resident Evil and even Final Fantasy were all westernized/actionized/shooter ized and killed in order to achieve those CoD sales that everyone envied. Eventually, they shelved most of those franchises believing they will not sell in the modern shooter era.

It was only until the last years of PS3 that Japanese devs started to dare to release Japanese games once again. Several Tales of games and Ni no Kuni were released to very positive reception. They realized that there was a demand for Japanese games. The PS4 sales further motivated them and today we are getting Star Ocean 5 (after 6 years), Persona 5 (after 7 years, Dragon Quest (after 9 years), Disgaea and other JRPGs after several years of hiatus. Didnt you Xbox fans notice all this happening?? Probably because you people were busy with the "AAA" dudebro shooterfest going on for years.

gangsta_red3272d ago

@Griever

Wow, it truly is shocking to actually read the mindset of some people and even more so that they truly believe what they are posting.

Please provide proof that MS was the ones that introduced shooters. I remember games like Golden Eye, Doom, Duke Nuke “em and a lot more appearing on Nintendo 64, PS1/PS2 waaaay before Xbox was even out. And I am positive that shooters were abundant and famous on the PC.

MS specifically introduced DLC? They were the first? Stop it, DLC was a practice introduced by third parties, not MS.

Online multiplayer goes back to PS2 and Dreamcast, Xbox refined it and made it more streamline.

“Suddenly CoD, Halo, Far Cry, GoW and other shooters became the most selling IPs.”

Because they were great games, because western development had boomed and there were now more options and a lot more games to choose from than what the Japanese developers had to offer gamers.

“People stopped buying and playing what Japanese made including JRPGs, horror, turn-based games, strategy RPGs, hack and slash etc.”

You are seriously making things up. People didn’t stop, JRPG’s and all those genres never sold gangbusters before with the exception of a few established IP’s. No different than today’s genres of games.

“Sony had to follow suit and adapt as well. If they did made the traditional japanese games, they were always a victim of poor sales. As a result, they tried westernizing their games to make them similar to the games being launched by Xbox. Silent Hill, DMC and Resident Evil were all westernized and killed.’

WHAT!?! First of all Sony did not make Silent Hill, DMC or Resident Evil, so why are you even saying this and trying to blame Xbox for these games? I have read some pretty bizarre posts but none as drop dead completely wrong as yours. You are making things up and desperately trying to place blame on the Xbox console instead of actually looking at where the trends of gaming were heading during that time.

You claim that people are unaware of the past events of the decade and yet the irony of it all is you are just as clueless. You are making up events and making up accusations to fit some weird agenda to try and paint Sony as a victim that HAD to reluctantly follow others. They had to reluctantly charge for online, offer DLC, introduce 1st party online passes, create more FPS and other instances you blame Xbox for.

“It was only until the last years of PS3 that Japanese devs started to dare to release Japanese games once again.”

I guess you missed all those other JRPG that were released throughout the last decade eh? Magna Carta III, Infinite Undiscovery, Neir, Enchanted Arms, Tales, Eternal Sonata, Operation Darkness, Resonance of Fate, Star Ocean the Last Hope, Last Reminant…just to name a few.

I think you may have been too busy play dudebro shooters to notice what really happened.

Why o why3272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

Is there a single region where the playstation isn't ahead.

This is why ms didn't want the xbox 360 to launch simultaneously with the ps3. They knew their best chance was to have a headstart and we all know what they sacrificed to achieve this.

This gen.......Parity = no Parity

@Griever....good points

Zool 083272d ago

True MS were not prepared to wait for HD DVD, got rid of it's first party studio's, relied too much on Gears and Halo and put all it's egg in one basket on kinect. They had a massive opportunity to take advantage of Sony's slow start last Gen being a year ahead but they blew it big time and now they're paying the price for their arrogance, and unlike last Gen, I don't see a way back for MS this Gen, it's simply because this time Sony learnt their lesson and got it right by investing in their own studio whilst making their console more developer friendly for third party studio's.

remixx1163272d ago (Edited 3272d ago )

Also you have to look at sonys mistakes last gen, the ps3 launching a year later with a 200$ more price point than the 360 was just crazy. Yet they managed to turn it all around and take the lead back after so long, all while being more expensive.

That was Microsoft's chance and they just sat there and rode their success instead of capitalizing on the opportunity.

Sony let the success of the ps2 make them arrogant last gen but not this time, they are finally back in their right mindset.

MasterCornholio3272d ago

The PS4 is doing great. Sony really deserves the sales.

Magicite3272d ago

and this is only beginning, my friend..

AndrewLB3272d ago

Of course the PS4 is going to sell better than the PS2 in their first year! The PS2 was plagued with all sorts of problems especially with the laser. There were also problems with controllers, disc loading mechanism, and some just wouldn't turn on.

http://www.neoseeker.com/fo...

In the UK alone there were 5,000 failed PS2 phone calls on christmas day, 2001... and when asked about this later in the week, Sony claimed they had not received a single complaint.

That sounds awfully familiar... now where have I heard about sony doing this recently? Oh yeah... PS4's launch failure rate. lol.

BiggerBoss3272d ago

Wow, what a deluded comment.

Just so you know, Ps2 is FAR from the only console thats being outpaced by the ps4. And the Ps4 didnt have a high failure rate at launch. In fact the FR was extremely low compared to RROD and even YLOD.

Seriously, why so salty?

rainslacker3272d ago

Hmmm...5000 out of half a quarter million sold. That's a 2% failure rate. That's extremely low by electronics standards...particularly for DVD/CD players at the time which were extremely prone to failure....really...go look it up.

Funny thing is, when the PS2 was young, the internet was barely a thing. Sure it was there, but it didn't have the viral social effect that it does today, so those things weren't exactly talked about with enough regularity to be some major thing to most people.

Face it, if 5K on Christmas day hurt Sony sales at all, then MS would have been dead in the water with the RROD, because it was much more widely reported, and much higher than 2%.

Also worth mentioning, that most of the early PS2 failures weren't seen until about a year after the system started being used, not on the day they were opened for use. If there are problems when you first try to use it, you take it back to the store and get another one. Hardly something that people consider when buying a system. The problems were mostly contained to the first through third revision of the hardware, and then one thing cropped up again in the 9th revision, but were mostly were pretty solid outside of that.

In any case, can you name any other console that has sold more than the PS4 has in the same time frame, or any subdivision of that time frame? Maybe it's just time to accept that the PS4 is a highly desirable console, and a lot of that has to do with Sony being about the only company right now that seems to care about the gamer...I'll say MS is there now too, but the masses still remember the early controversy, not the subsequent turn-arounds.

Also...can you please let us know what the PS4 launch failure rate was? I've only seen a few reports here or there on the issue, nothing that could be considered a major hardware problem. The biggest problem in fact seems to be the poor manufacturing on the analog stick rubber for the first batch of PS4's, which was fixed in a revision less than a month after the PS4 launch.

wegetsignalx3263d ago (Edited 3263d ago )

The PS2 and PS4 do not have an above average rate of failure for a piece of modern electronics. You are deliberately spreading lies and FUD about Sony/PS4.

ps5fanboy3272d ago

I was in first day and played killzone sf for a year practically non stop, already the ps4 is a system deserving of good sales , it serves all my needs pretty much , now if we can get xbmc running on it...perfect.

Chespin3272d ago

Anyone with a ps4 should definitely get Bloodborne. It's the best game of this Gen so far.

Mikelarry3272d ago

I like the idea of that game but i am too pansy to get it lol

Fil1013272d ago

Its realy gd buddy and more accessible then previous soulss games

killacal133272d ago

You know know if you can handle it until you try it.

thekhurg3272d ago

Get something like Lords of the Fallen first. Much cheaper at this point, and in that same souls vein of gameplay. If, while playing Lords, you feel that you want to play a game that's 10 times faster and you want to spam dodge because enemies attack non-stop then grab Bloodborne. If you like the pacing of Lords but just want something harder, go with Dark Souls 2.

SmielmaN3272d ago

The first 7-10 hrs were really tough for me (didn't like souls games) but after I realized I was playing the game kinda wrong I turned it around. It's just about leading enemy attack patterns, parry, dodge. After you beat the first two bosses, including Father G, the game really opens up and you can handle yourself much better. It's still tough as nails, but when you die its your own fault and you typically realize what strategy you have to employ to succeed at whichever part. Really good game. Your not spoon fed anything, you go out and find all this new stuff all over the place and can miss a whole lot too

Mikelarry3272d ago

thanks replies, I will try it out

BiggerBoss3272d ago

Like the others said, the games only really hard until you learn the mechanics. Then its just addicting:)

PlayStation UK chief Gara joins Amazon

Fergal Gara has joined Amazon UK as director of PC.

He joins the company after four years in charge of PlayStation’s UK and Ireland business.

During his tenure, he helped turn around the firm’s fortunes in the UK. PlayStation was ranked No.3 in terms of console market share when he joined the business and, by the time he left, PS4 was the No.1 games console in the country.

He was in charge of marketing, sales, finance and customer service

Prior to joining PlayStation, Gara spent six years at Asda, which included stints as category director for music, video and games, general manager for entertainment and - eventually - trading director for Asda Direct.

Eonjay3065d ago

Congrats to Gara. I was wondering where he was gonna end up.

Mr Pumblechook3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

Sure he will be working on the PC division, but Amazon's Kindle Fire platform and Twitch purchase suggest they are serious about the gaming business. The question is will they be looking to move into the bigger game and how?

thisismyaccount3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

He´s been in charge of Sony PlayStation UK since 2011, meaning he was in charge for the PS3 doings in that territorial .... if PS3 was only 3rd when he joined Sony, he prolly hasn´t done much to change that image.

Dunno how you can now claim that thanks to him the PS4 is nrº1 in UK. It has to do more that the PS4 is a sexy beast and successful on its own merits and not because he was in charge of it. You could most likely hire an ape from the local Zoo to direct Sony UK and the PS4 would still print money like a wh...

The PS4 has had unprecedented success since it was released in 2013, but its predecessor, the PS3, seems to be drifting off into the distance. This Fall represents a massive opportunities for developers and publishers to capitalize on a rising new-gen audience and Sony is quite aware of that.

freshslicepizza3251d ago

sony is still supporting it with games like mlb the show. i think they should stopped support and move on to focus on just the ps4 but that's just my opinion.

FarEastOrient3250d ago

PS2 got its last game 2 years ago. PS3 will be around for a long time, especially for markets that can't afford the full price of the PS4.

Double_O_Revan3251d ago

PS1 & 2 got solid support Way into the next generations. No reason to believe the PS3 won't get the same.

Magicite3251d ago

Developers will support PS3 for many years to come (unlike its direct rivals), especially Japanese, the question is - how long Sony will keep producing it.

GribbleGrunger3250d ago

It probably won't get that much support from developers who are now fully committed to next gen, but it will be a decent alternative for the poorer amongst us. Indie games will continue to be made available for the PS3, as will the occasional AAA cross platform title. Then you have PSVue, PSNow, PS+ and PSMusic, along with many other aps such as Netflix. If the price is right, it will continue to sell.
