There's physical release for PC but not for console, and you need to pay into a middle tier to get physical. I'm hoping they create a console physical release tier and provide a blank box (your console of choice) and a manual. I'm getting it on console no matter what, but right now unless you get a PC version you don't have many options.

With all the money they're getting I would think they could work out physical console copies for Kickstarter backers.

I never realized Rare's 3D platformers were all that popular.

But in general, it's really nice to (finally) see some competition in the genre. The 3D platforming genre has been dominated by Mario for far too long.

IMO, games like this have always generally been more about whimsical fun and creativity than trying to out-do each other in the genre.
It's why both Banjo and Mario could co-exist on the same console so well, and why both are so highly acclaimed.
They borrowed from one another sometimes but still did their own things, without worrying too much about following trends or whether they were outdoing others.
They did what they felt was the most fun, and what fit their vision for those worlds.
And we got legendary experiences out of them.

That kind of spirit looks to be shining through in Yooka-Laylee, as well, and it's doing all the better for it.

I think Super Mario Galaxy was such a brilliant idea it practically cannibalized the genre. I really think MS said "we can't compete with space, man! throw some vehicles in there!" for the last Banjo game.

Also the swift deaths of Crash and Spyro sped things up. Really only Ratchet and Clank and Mario are the last 3D platformers. Even licensed games have moved on to other genres. 7th gen was all about the 2.5D games, maybe 8th will make a return to 3D since the demand is clearly there.

That's not quite what happened. The game that broke the platforming genre was... Halo.

Super Mario World made the 2D platformed king, so everyone started making 2D platformers.

Then Mario 64 made the 3D platformed king, and that became the dominant genre.

And what was the next big thing? Halo. And everyone stopped making 3D platformers to do shooters instead.

Just like how 2D platformers disappeared from the market after Mario 64, so, too, did 3D platformers vanish after Halo

And its really great that now, finally, thanks to crowd funding, these games can come back. And all the other similarly dead genres--CRPGs, space combat Sims, adventure games, etc., etc.

Its a shame publishers still don't realize that niche markets are a thing that exists, though.

It actually doesn't say that it's the last stretch goal specifically. But it does say "our next stretch goal" multiple times. So perhaps, it was only misinterpreted by the editor of this article. The "*additional funding also.." may have just been included due to it's unexpected success and concern of kickstarter bloat.

But I do hope there is physical release for all the consoles as well! :)

They need more stretch goals with that much time left. Include physical copies for all systems, 360, PS3, Vita ports handled by a separate studio, and the old "Stop & Swop" feature from Banjo which was abandoned due to technical issues (just for nostalgic fun and a nod to Banjo).

Rare thought you could hot swap carts on every n64, which isn't true. Basically you would put in a banjo kazooie cart, take it out, and put in tooie to unlock content in the latter. When it became apparent this wouldn't be possible, Rareware abandoned the idea with no explanation in Tooie, leading people to speculate what the Stop and Swap items in the first game were used for for the next decade.

This feature was finally implemented in Nuts and Bolts with the XBLA versions of Kazooie and Tooie.

That shit can stay on the Wii-U. I don't know why you'd want them to charge for characters. Worst form of consumerism. One product should have all the characters. Any DLC should be actual gameplay expansions. Anything else gets a finger from me.

I remember hoping BK would come to DS and that's when I found out that MS bought Rare/Banjo.

I would love to see lots of open World 3D platformers on 3DS.

Vita would be perfect for this. We should start a petition for them to do a port! Vita is strong, if they are doing a Wii U version then Vita isn't THAT far off. Vita shares some PS3 and PS4 games, it's almost on par with 360, its games look about as good as some 360 launch titles.

I know it's possible. 3DS is a stretch...the Vita version alone would be scaled down a ton. If they could wizard up a 3DS version it would likely have to be a N3DS exclusive.
