Analyst: Xbox 360 Best of Show at E3

This week's E3 Media and Business Summit in Los Angeles gave each major console maker -- Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo -- the chance to showcase the future of their platforms.

Microsoft added social functions and new entertainment options to the Xbox 360 Latest News about Xbox 360, Sony trumpeted a video store and an upcoming price cut for the PlayStation 3 Latest News about PlayStation 3, and Nintendo gave gamers a glimpse of a new controller add-on and upcoming games like "Wii Sports Resort."

However, if any of the Big 3 could be said to have "won" E3 this year, then Microsoft takes the top prize, according Mike Goodman, director of digital entertainment for the Yankee Group.

First of all it wasn't an XBOX360 show it was the Microsoft conference. (still you might think that it was purely an Xbox360 show)

Second, Microsoft showed multiplatforms to fill up the time on stage and Sony could have done exactly the same but they had EXCLUSIVES instead which are related only to thier console and if I were calling the shots I would not let anyone show multiplatforms except for the developers who made them. I would concider it cheating.

Third, Microsoft had no big announcement or ground breaking news except for FFXII coming to the Xbox360 and thats also a multiplatform that they were advertising. Overall thier conference was dull and just full of buissness numbers which can make anyone except for the microsoft stockbrokers and xbox-fanboys sleepy.

What was it that made the conference so great?
- The video deal with Netflix? It will just force you to a gold membership and a Netflix monthly pay of 10 dollars extra.
- Avatars? Anyone that has eye's know that it's a ripoff of the Wii avatars. I thought more of you fanboys would be angry than thinking it was a good idea. You have spent money on the gamecard pictures and now thier worthless? I sertenly would be furious if I got slaped in the face like that.
- A full latitute of appealing products? No Xbox360 was in full focus, nothing on the PC front whatsoever.
- Any juicy exclusive announcements of xbox360 games for the future? Nope, No new games for 09 and not many playable exclusives at E3 either.

...What made Microsoft's show the best? Please do summarize it in one paragraph because the only thing I saw that was kind of interesting was the whole Netflix thing. Other than that, the new interface and the avatars reminded me way too much of Sony and Nintendo's ideas.

Fable wasn't too appealing, Gears 2 was okay but didn't *wow* me, and the rest of the games they mentioned were multi-platform. And now that I think about it, that announcement of FFXIII going multi-platform isn't so bad afterall because Microsoft are so stupid that they don't realize what FF means in Japan. If they were smart, they would try to get Square to release it to 360 owners in Japan so they could get some kind of edge.

Sony had the best show again. The games they showed & announced were more appealing to me. The inFamous & KillZone 2 trailers were a real surprise. You are correct, you don't get the full dashboard. However you get a blade that comes up with everything that you will need to use while in a game, like friends, messaging, etc.

Even though the full PS3 dash come up when you hit the ps button, almost everything you try and select tells you that you will need to exit the game. So basically, sony would have been better served to have added a mini xmb, with only gaming related thing in it instead of the full dash.

Not sure I agree with that analyst. In regards to newly announced features Microsoft wins but as far as new and exciting games it has to go to Sony. Bottom line is we all bought our system/systems for awesome games not avatars or movie streaming or video stores or the layout of the user interface. Right? Those are just bonuses to a great gaming experience. Other than Gears of War 2 and Banjo there was nothing too exciting for 360 for me. On PS3 though I'm looking forward to many more games. All the polls and most of the analysts agree that Microsoft won this E3.

Sony is still introducing things on PSN that Microsoft had years ago while xbox live is still reinventing itself and innovating.
Sony introduced a couple of new games with no release date and were unable to show in-game footage or put on a demonstration. After their track record of cancelling games they announced at E3 it's very hard to trust that MAG or some of the other titles will even come out.

I like Microsoft's approach which is much more down to earth, instead of making all these grandiose claims and giving a campy historical perspective of their console, they gave a brief snapshot of what is to come in the near future. At least when microsoft introduces a game at E3 you know that it will come out before the next E3. Sony actually apologized for the delay of Home's release at their E3. The E3 is no place for apologies, broken promises, and unrealistic claims.

If you're going to say that you have a game with 256 player multiplayer then you better, at the minimum, have an in-game demonstration as proof. All Sony had was a quick pre-rendered trailer that didn't look special and proved nothing.

Microsoft has much more credibility because Sony has lied so many times. In the past, they've said things like the PS3 launch titles would look better than anything the 360 would ever produce and that the PS3 is ten times more powerful than the 360. Sony fanboys just don't know what they're missing because Sony has been BSing them since day one. It's sad.

If it wasn't for FFXIII being announced on the 360, Microsoft wouldn't have had much of an E3 at all because that was the only thing that even mattered. Everything that was shown from Microsoft mostly was stuff that was already known.

Sony announced and showed off new 1st party titles for 2009 for the PS3, and Sony even surprised everyone with the Resistance PSP game, nobody saw that game coming. Microsoft was just too predictable at E3.

with the talks of stagnant user-base/boring dash and and not enough outside the hardcore games. They focused on these and showcase some HOT games with the devs playing them.(hands-on approach) It was different with a big BOMB for last.

Sony is accustomed to showing more of it's 1st-party titles(as it has more studios) but to me, only KZ2 and LBP look dazzling. Resistance 2 showcase was retarded/boring.(More CGI trailers/teasers mostly) But they have 3 fronts. PSP/PS2/PS3 so it seemed more satisfying, as there was more content.

Sony chose the wrong horse to showcase if you ask me. Had it been KZ2 and LBP(hands-on)...that would of left a better taste with more analyst/fans.

It was more important for MS to re-assure the fans about where the 360 stands after 3 years. Then it was for Sony that showed mostly CGI games and teasers. Nothing about HOME, and other functions that warrants why it's the better experience.

Ms is proving:

It's getting better.
It's profitable.
Quickly loosing that(Only Shooters Stigma).
Catering to the East(JRPGS)

It's not a show for the fans. You can pick up a monthly mag or look on the web for this stuff. It's a show for the industry that points to the direction that the manufacturers are headed in. Microsoft won the show because they have shown they are aggressively seeking out third party support, they are widening their audience with new features and upgraded services and of course trying to gain mass market interest with a lower price point.

Sony showed some cool games, but they were still showing a couple for 3 or 4 years in a row now. People know they are coming, what they are looking for is a new experience or some type of growth. I don't think many people were excited about them cutting out b/c. The video service is long overdue since there has been a working model of this for quite some time. I also think that analysts and even devs are taking Sony's announcements with a grain of salt too since they tend to announce things and not follow through or atleast not in a timely matter. Home's absence is almost becoming legendary in the various communities.

This is simply for E3. I like all 3 companies, and have played the crap out of games on all 3 current gen systems, but xbox is starting to wear on my patience. Between all of their PR spin (which Sony is guilty of), minimal original and innovative game selection outside of shooters, and 3 RROD's, I'm selling my 360.

Although there was nothing new in terms of games outside of Final Fantasy which was a bombshell obviously, the games announced that were exclusive - Gears, Fable, and one JRPG were dated for release in Nov, October, Sept, respectively. MS had demos to show during the presentation and unveiling of netflix service and were stated to be available by the end of this year. I am not interested in avatars or that movie game, so I am not going to be mentioning that since those concepts already exist. MS focused on the 2nd half of 2008 and rightfully so, those games are coming out soon and should generate some interest.

The one thing that left me wondering after the Sony presentation was after all the games that were announced regarding their exclusives and such, release date? GOW will not be out for awhile, KZ and Resistence not even dated and I assume not coming out in 2008? They briefly showcase these games with no release date or an estimated date. I guess Sony wanted to create a buzz for upcoming titles, but most of these games will not be available until 2009, most likely.

Just my opinion, Nintendo doesnt need a mention...

Of course. Gears 2, Fable 2, 360 dashboard, netflix, avatars, and of course FF...........vs Sony's Resistance on the psp??? Nope. Killzone 2 footage making it the 15th straight E3. Nope. Mag??? Another war shooter. Nope. Wasn't even close.

Microsoft: Playable demos of Fable 2, GeoW 2, RE5 and Fallout 3. Announces Fallout 3 exklusive dlc. Announces Rock Band 2 timed exclusivity. Announces exclusive dlc for Guitar Hero 4. Announces partnership with netflix, and complete dashboard remake. Not on conference, but announces OPTIONAL (Suck it) installs to hard drive for xbox360, reducing the infernal dvddrive noise. Announces a lot of casual games. Trailers of Banjo Kazooie and Viva Pinata 2. Announces 3 Square-Enix RPGs either exclusive or timed exclusive, that all would have been exclusive for ps2 last generation. And, the only megaton this year, FFXIII not so Sony-exclusive anymore.

Microsoft focused mostly on games coming in the near future, and they only have one console so their whole conference was about the 360. Sony had to keep their focus 3 ways, and the time that ps3 did get was all "Here are some games you already know about and, oh, cg-trailers of games that are coming in a few years. rejoice!".

MS Conference: here's Gears 2 and some other mediocre titles, here's a title that we recently acquired that would already have been available on another platform, here's avatars and a new dashboard...

Sony Conference: here's MAG (doing something never before seen on consoles), here's Killzone 2 (despite whether you think it is boring, everyone that liked CoD 4 is lying if they say they don't like this because it is at least graphically superior in every aspect with the exception of frames per second), GoW III is in the works, LBP is more innovative than you can think, Home Beta is coming, KZ2 beta is coming, Resistance 2 (also offering greater online capabilities than any other existing console FPS)...Oh yeah, a no subscription necessary movie and tv show download service integrated into the PS Store (and you can copy the movies to your PSP, like buying multiple copies of a movie). I'm sure I'm forgetting something, oh yeah, PlayTv is getting closer to arriving State Side once the US goes fully digital in February of 2009...

meh, i disagree with the title, i think Sony had the best show, the LBP presentation was awesome, resistance for psp sounds cool, but when it came to the PlayStation 3 things got very good, infamous,MAG, etc. most of MS conference was multi-platform titles, nothing really new, a couple of rip-offs of buzz and singstar, and the wii-mii thingy lol. but yea thats just my opinion

Yeah, KZ2 was uh, er...lame. Phony failed at E3 2008, period. Gears 2 was the buzz of the entire show, mix that in with a new dash, Nexflix, Fable 2 and a price drop, MS clearly destroyed the competition.

New Xbox Experience will arrive before Dome...er..Home.

As for stealing, think FF13! Suck it down!
