Is Bloodborne's Upper Cathedral Ward The Scariest Place From Software Has Ever Created?

No doubt, Miyazaki and From Software knew what they were doing when they crafted this Victorian nightmare and no place reaffirms this better than the Upper Cathedral Ward; a impressive exercise in pure, unadulterated psychological and manipulative horror.

It isn't that the Brainsuckers are hard most of the time, but sometimes they would go nuts, grabbing me no matter what the hell I did. Other times, I'd just kill them without a 2nd thought.

But, on 1st playthrough, I had 79 insight going in. Then later on, I was looking and I had like 44. I was like wtf?

It was that one by the ladder going up, the ambush. He just grabbed me, or chased me and grabbed me like 10 x in a row.

I never thought anything of them until I got to the upper cathedral. I was getting grabbed and as soon as I recovered I'd get hit with paralysis spell or whatever it is and then he'd go to town on my again and that was me done xD That area was the only time I almost rage quit my entire play time lol

And yeah I was at 99 insight at that point and then I looked a bit later and saw it was less and I hadn't used any. I thought the game was trippin xD

It was really haunting... I had headphones on the night I wandered there the first time. I took them off like five times before I realized that strange haunting sound came from the game. Immediately reminded me of Demon's Souls' asylum. Was scary as hell! Good stuff!

I too will agree with the Prision in Demon's Souls being the scariest level From has ever created.

That said, as a whole, Bloodborne is the creepiest of all of the games.

I kind of wish they stuck to the Edgar Allen Poe side of the gothic and less of the HP Lovecraft thing, but that is merely a personal preference. Its still excellent.

I don't like the upper Cathedral Ward at all, but let's not forget about the Tower of Latria in Demon's Souls.

The second half of Yahar'gul, Unseen Village - the part locked behind the gate - was the creepiest for me. First time there I didn't go through the gate but entered through the transporting pool so I didn't know where I was and even thought it sent me through time. Seeing what happened to the citizens of Yahar'gul still creeps me out.

Overall, just great level design everywhere in Bloodborne.

Upper Cathedral wasn't scary for me, probably because the brain suckers made me laugh more than anything else. I had more caution going through the Forbidden Woods.

I think the scariest area from these guys was the pitch black area in Dark Souls where you fight the skeleton dudes.

That area really freaked me out and when I found the bonfire at the bottom it was pure elation.

Upper Cathedral Ward was definitely cool though.
