Mortal Kombat Review - IGN

Story only matters so much in a fighting game. Combat is king, and there’s a ton of depth to mine from Mortal Kombat X. A much-needed transfusion of new blood, along with the ability to choose between three variations of every character means we’ll be learning, grinding, and discovering for a long time to come. Its universe keeps getting harder and harder to take seriously, and its microtransactions are borderline gross, but Mortal Kombat X is a great fighting game all the same.

Best one of the series and only an 8.4? That makes sense

Spinal3358d ago

Yeah... And Evolve got a 9 yet no one is playing it or talking about it....

Elit3Nick3357d ago

Me and a large number of friends are still playing Evolve intensively, although the sheer support the devs give out does help, they patch/micropatch it every week or two

fonduktoe3357d ago

Ur talkin about it. Its a good game I'm sure you've never played.

Elit3Nick3357d ago

Oh I'm sorry, I forgot that this is N4G, where there's only one opinion allowed and that the one that everyone else jumps on. You can keep pretending that Evolve is a huge rip-off but you won't see devs as dedicated to the game as Turtle Rock and a community as polite and friendly as Evolve's

I can proudly say AngryJoy did not get bribed for Evolve review

SolidDuck3357d ago (Edited 3357d ago )

Evolve is great I don't care what anyone says. Just cause it had a bad dlc plan it gets tons of hate. I'm sure Mk x is great, but don't throw evolve under the bus, its awesome.

Calling it the best one is pretty subjective. The game is great and all but not perfect it is especially rough around the edges
(almost no explanatations in game what differs the variations of each characters and helps the players to learn them, shorter story, smaller krypt, tons of dlc, no tag mode anymore, boring soundtrack in comparison with older MK games, more violence than ever but less humor, only 13 stages, only one unlockable character)

Reviews around 8-9 are damn fair for MKX. Its a great game but by no means the best MK ever.

dafegamer3357d ago

gameplay is always king in fighting games and mkx has the best gameplay and balance in the series, you can't tell me otherwise.

pompombrum3358d ago

Not read the review yet but 8.4 sounds fair, it's an absolutely quality game but regardless of the criticisms, it deserves 1 off it's score for the far from optimal netcode. It's 2015, no excuses for not getting it right imho.

Tedakin3357d ago

IGN gave MK9 something similar and it was amazing.

TheRedButterfly3357d ago

Yeah, because 8.4 is a bad score... -_-

ginsunuva3357d ago

The score is relative to it's potential and the rest of the genre and the quality of other games out currently.

Being the best of your series doesn't automatically make you top of the line in everything.

This is the best Mortal Kombat. In terms of gameplay, story and content, how in depth the game is, there isn't another mortal kombat that has come close. Or another fighting game.

MrSwankSinatra3358d ago (Edited 3358d ago )

personally the whole variation thing doesn't add depth, it's more of an annoyance. Each variation there is just like a few moves exclusive to that variation. It would be different if each variation had a completely different fighting style, but it doesn't. Not to mention the whole "X-ray" moves are nothing more than crutches for this newer generation of gamers. Plus The story is shorter than MK9. At least the online works "somewhat" i guess. The only thing I can appreciate is that it's faster, playing MK9 was like moving through molasses.

pompombrum3358d ago

Well I can't speak for every character but my two main characters I've been using Takeda and Kenshi variations all feel different and for the most part, completely change how I approach the game. On the surface it might just seem like they are just adding a few moves but the reality is much different.

Story might be shorter than MK9 but ultimately everything about it is better in every conceivable way. The animation is out of this world, it's like an interactive Martial Arts movie. You'll be hard pressed to find another fighting game this whole generation that can even stand on equal footing with MK X let alone surpass it.

ginsunuva3357d ago

I'm pretty sure MK:DA and MK:Deception both had multiple fighting styles, and they were actually completely different.

yankolo3357d ago

I think KI its more fun to play

DEEBO3357d ago

Yeah right Ki old versions are. Better then the new one and MKX has the best combat out of all the MK.

What got people mad is the milky gamers with DLC,me i just don't buy it unless it's something i really want.

We have the power because we spend the money. I bet if gamers. Come together and don't buy no dlc for a year or six months these companies will shit a brick.

Cool. Wanted to play Hell Let Loose and I always enjoy a good golf game. Mortal Kombat X should have been 11 IMO though.

NoFanBoy998d ago

HLL seems a bit of a mess on console, I hope it improves but didn't have fun with the beta.

EvertonFC998d ago

Same was looking fwd to the beta but it was not a great experience

1nsomniac998d ago

Yea HLL is great on PC but is really hard to enjoy currently on console.

NeoGamer232998d ago

Ya, I really wanted to play PGA 2K21 but didn't want to pay the price.

Eonjay998d ago

Agreed. MKX should have been 11. I will play PGA though. Haven't played since Tiger Woods. This month feels lacking.
