PlayStation Exclusives: Why Are All the Good Ones Taken?

Sony has done a poor job at getting PlayStation exclusives out to PS4 owners. What gives? Ken from Mammoth Gamers gives his two cents on the topic.

I love my PlayStation 4 to pieces, but it's been bumming me out for quite a while that the biggest exclusives seem to be in the form of oddball DLCs.

OUROSMAG1750d ago

Bloodborne would disagree with you.

KenBorter1750d ago

The article agrees with you! As do I, Bloodborne has helped me regain confidence in Sony. Just waiting for more to help me feel like I made the right choice.

Vamphlet1750d ago

I knew I'd get a burn for that, but I couldn't go back and edit! I really meant up until recently, aside from Bloodborne the biggest thing on PlayStation for a long time had been Destiny getting some extra content on PS4. :)

chrismichaels041750d ago (Edited 1750d ago )

@OUROSMAG - Bloodborne isnt the only game that disagrees with this article. The PS4 already has a pretty solid lineup of games for a 1 year old system.

The Last of Us Remastered(95)
Bloodborne (93)
Final Fantasy Realm Reborn (86)
Guilty Gear Xrd (85)
MLB14 The Show (83)
Infamous Second Son (80)
LittleBigPlanet 3 (79)
MLB15 The Show (79)
Samurai Warriors 4 (76)
Killzone Shadow Fall (73)
DriveClub (71)
The Order 1886 (65)

Thats not even including all of the quality indie exclusive games on PS4 like HellDivers, Resogun, SuperStardust etc.....

BlackTar1871750d ago

Except Drive Club is a spectacular racer. Blood borne is a great game and The order is decent enough if you don't listen to the hate filled internet and try it for yourself.

SpringHeeledJack1750d ago

The order is a good game and i can't understand the hate. Great story and characters, smooth game play, zero bugs. The chapters that really wasn't chapters, just a video felt cheap but otherwise a good game. Certainly nowhere near 4 and 5 out of 10 scores.

instantstupor1749d ago (Edited 1749d ago )

Yea the Order 1886 is actually a pretty good game in my estimation. Though you have to wonder if it's because of how terrible everyone made it out to be. But hey, I like it.

Also, it straight up, no questions asked has the best graphics, environments and atmosphere of any game I have ever seen. And that includes any of the PC games I own (and yes I can run them well, GTX 970). But I really hope that Sony uses that engine for other games because it is absolutely stunning.

sarshelyam1750d ago

I really am baffled by how subjectivity drives the reality of the situation. So you don't like some of the exclusives, and suddenly you agree with an article steeped in the same reality that some of those exclusives didn't fall in line with your tastes?

I hate citing Wiki for crap like this, but let's just look at the numbers...

They order from greatest to least, with PS4 housing the linon's share of exclusives. Yes, they cross multiple genres and distribution methods...but to say a digital download or indie release is suddenly less important than a big-budget retail release comes down to nothing more than your opinion.

Specifically, and to your point, I imagine you weren't a huge fan of The Order: 1886? Personally, I loved it, though I can see how dismissing entries of this kind may skew the perception that the only thing left are digital downloads and indies. It's wrong, but I get it.

KenBorter1750d ago

Yeah, I truly want to feel like I get a lot of my console and it hasn't felt like I am in an exclusive club that makes others want to have what I have. I feel like that's the whole thing when it comes to marketing; what makes you different?

thorstein1749d ago (Edited 1749d ago )

New to games journalism? I will let you in on a secret. Gamers hate clickbait/ flamebait/ hateboy articles.

Make sure you research everything so you don't come off sounding like a know nothing nub.

Whenever clickbait hits N4G the authors often get lambasted by the community because they are sick of hearing about people who hate games writing about games.

If you love gaming, and writing, then write great articles. People will read them, even if you don't see a high temperature on them.

There are blogs on here all the time about it. Lately, some of these journos just write clickbait to inflame the gaming community. Most of it is just trash.

Good luck and write something original.

Silly gameAr1749d ago

Well said. This is N4G in a nutshell right now.

Timesplitter141750d ago (Edited 1750d ago )

it's better for everyone if there are no exclusives at all. That way the only thing that matters is the machine itself and people are free to choose whichever one they prefer

maybelovehate1750d ago

I agree. I just like games, I don't care what console they are on. Would be nice if I didn't have to switch inputs since I am lazy haha.

Vamphlet1750d ago

I see what you're saying but I can't say I completely agree. Because then I feel like gaming consoles would become just like iOs and Android devices (in a loose sense). Without console exclusives PlayStation and Xbox can essentially do the same things with the exceptions being in the machine and the OS.

Timesplitter141750d ago

well, if consoles have trouble standing above the competition without exclusives, it's a problem for console manufacturers, but not for us

OB1Biker1750d ago

Yep that would make sense but exclusive games are also incentive for companies to dev new games which wouldn't exist otherwise

itsjustexuma1750d ago (Edited 1750d ago )

Sony has a lot of good exclusives

remixx1161750d ago

Woah woah woah, let's just pretend guilty gear, bloodborne, Helldiver's, mlb the show, tlou re, ffxiv, and lbp3 don't exist so that way the journalist's blind point can stay relevant.

But to be honest I find it weird that after a year and some change, the gaming media is still riding this ps4 has no games BS, 3 great exclusives drop in march and it still doesn't matter. Oh well good thing I actually am a gamer.

Timesplitter141750d ago (Edited 1750d ago )

Sports games and remasters don't count, and FF14 isn't even exclusive

That leaves us with Bloodborne, Helldivers and LBP3. The only one that really can be considered a killer app is Bloodborne. It's a pretty underwhelming selection compared to past generations

OB1Biker1750d ago (Edited 1750d ago )

Dam why does everyone always forget infamous SS and first light? xD
And lol at people saying this or that game doesn't 'count'. Childish really
They don't remember in the stupid fan wars like useless 'lists' you should know are never complete

Timesplitter141750d ago (Edited 1750d ago )

if people don't remember certain games it's probably because these games weren't very memorable

kraenk121750d ago (Edited 1750d ago )

It was the same with PS3 and we all know how that turned out. Sony lets game developers the time they need to finish their games instead of pressuring them..I favour that attitude.

There are many great exclusives coming to PS4 this year.

remixx1161749d ago (Edited 1749d ago )

Time- I hate how you guys adhere to this stupid sh*t like, this doesn't count or that shouldn't be there. Honestly its freaking stupid, the point is that they are games you can't get on other "consoles" besides sonys which in turn gives people a reason to purchase a ps4.

Killer instinct, dead rising 3, ori and the blind forest, titanfall and the like are all available on PC and halo MCC and forza horizon 2 are available in some way on last gen consoles yet I still consider them xb1 exclusives. Going by that MS only has sunset overdrive but I don't adhere to dumbass guidelines set by other peoples opinions.

Each "console" has a reason to purchase them whether they're also on last gen platforms, timed exclusive, available on PC as well etc etc. They are reasons none the less and just because you may not like lbp3 or guilty gear or infamous, drive club, mlb the show and the such doesn't mean other people dont see them as great reasons.

I don't move goal posts to fit my opinion, I know what is what whether they fit your guidelines or not.

I agree but I feel like they miss the mark a lot and have a tough time making those AAA titles. I love the indies! But I don't associate a game to playstation like I do with Microsoft. However the article shows that I do trust Sony a little more after bloodborne. That game rules!!!

Spotie1749d ago

That doesn't even make sense.

You're saying you don't associate Gran Turismo, or Uncharted, or God of War with PlayStation? Not inFamous or Killzone or LBP? Not The Show?

I can't take you people seriously.

Kingscorpion19811750d ago

And it's just the beginning!!

Death1750d ago

I have just as many exclusives for my PS4 as I do for my Xbox One.

The only thing I can say that has changed this gen so far is Microsoft has been working harder to get exclusive content and Sony's first party studios have been relatively quiet. I think most people expected more from Sony's first party devs. Bloodbourne is arguably the best game on the system and it's a collaboration with a third party.

Sony's exclusive releases have been just as good as Microsofts. The expectations however are much higher.

_-EDMIX-_1750d ago

"Microsoft has been working harder to get exclusive content and Sony's first party studios have been relatively quiet"

To "get exclusive content" not make huh? I'm sorry but I think many gamers could care less about MS seeking timed games, ie Elite Dangerous, Tomb Raider etc.

I'd rather Sony stay quite about their other teams as their games finish up, then working "harder" to find timed junk.

Sony has more teams to actually stay quiet about and E3 isn't here yet, sooooo just announce all games being worked on all at once? Why?

Again, neither Sony nor MS actually operate that way. We don't know about some of MS teams too. What MS has "been" doing is what they did last gen.

Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Bioshock, Ninja Gaiden II etc. So I question..."harder" ooor same ol'e same ol'e?

Death1749d ago

You can argue all day long if they are the same or different. It's harder to argue the catalog of games that have released. Sony's best games are a re-release of a game that was less than a year old and the game From made for/with them. I don't care that they aren't telling us what is coming out, I see what has come out. Since launch it is debatable which platform has the best retail exclusives.

I do disagree about gamers not caring about timed exclusives. By the time Street Fighter Ultra, Super, X or whatever hits the Xbox One, PS4 gamers will be done and over it. Same with Tomb Raider. Games have a relatively short shelf life where the masses actually care about them.

I am curious why you want Sony's first party games to be done before they are announced. That isn't the traditional model devs and publishers follow. It's hard to market something that is already out. It's much easier before they release. Sony not announcing games means there are a lot less games coming than we are used to seeing. There needs to be a time when you live in the present and stop looking at the past.

_-EDMIX-_1749d ago

"I am curious why you want Sony's first party games to be done before they are announced"

Never stated that bud, merely that Sony has no reason to announce titles that they plan to release in 2017 or 2016 in 2013 or 2014 etc. Same actually goes to MS. We all know GT7 is being worked reason to announce it just to have folks waiting as though it was coming out sooner.

Whats strange....why would you take what was stated literally? Mind you...I stated this.

"I'd rather Sony stay quite about their other teams as their games finish up"

....."finish up" ie continue to completion that is when games are normally announced bud, when they are actually being worked on. So....announce a game prior to its development? Why?

"Sony not announcing games means there are a lot less games coming than we are used to seeing"

LMFAO! Sure bud....despite Sucker Punch, Quantic Dreams, Media Molecule, Guerrilla Games, PD, Sony Bend and other studios still working on unknown titles. They are merely pacing themselves. I'm sorry but at no point last gen did Sony just announce all the ips that would release THE WHOLE GEN! No publisher has EVER done that bud.

They have enough studios that they don't actually need to.

Death1749d ago

Who is saying all games for the gen should be announced today? You don't need to lie or exaggerate to make your point. What first party games have released since 2013?

The Last of Us Remastered
Sing Star

Third party exclusives:
The Order: 1886

Prior to the PS4's launch Sony announced 30 first party games in the works with 20 released in the first year.

In February 2013 we were told all Sony studios were already working on PS4 games.

What games am I missing? Please feel free to fill in the list. 13 world wide studios working for more than 2 years surely have more to show.

_-EDMIX-_1748d ago

"Third party exclusives:
The Order: 1886

lol, Sony owns both those IPs....they are first party, not 3rd party.

"Who is saying all games for the gen should be announced today?"

"Sony's first party studios have been relatively quiet"

Mind you..I again stated.

"Sony has no reason to announce titles that they plan to release in 2017 or 2016 in 2013 or 2014 etc"

Those teams that are still working on titles have all the time to still work on those titles. Its best for them to announce next years games, this year at E3, not just a year prior just announcing ips lol.

Mind you, neither MS nor Sony just announce titles all year round. Also..things change, some of those titles may have not even passed concept ie Santa Monica cancelling one of their new ips.

" Sony's best games are a re-release of a game" subjective, can be stated about really any publisher, hell I feel the MCC is the best XONE game based on me liking the older Halo's vs the newer ones...

"Who is saying all games for the gen should be announced today?" Never stated you did bud...

"13 world wide studios working for more than 2 years surely have more to show" Yes...they'll likely show their work when its ready to be shown, Sony is in no rush to actually just randomly announce titles. They got a lot of heat for doing that with GT5 and in hind sight, it would have made sense to just not even say anything about it until a certain period and time vs people waiting for GT5 legit since PS3's launch and it ended up releasing in 2010.

We don't know what LionHead's new IP is, we haven't seen Black Tusk's AAA shooter since its first reveal and now its pretty much MIA and they likely have another studio working on some other titles.

I'm sorry but it makes no sense to question the publisher that has the most first party studios and that generationally produces the most exclusives through out the gen.

Just staying....we didn't just know about Beyond Two Souls, Heavy Rain, The Last Of Us, InFamous etc all when PS3 was first announced. Even if they know about the game, it doesn't even make sense to just rush an announcement....just because. You not hearing about a title, doesn't mean its not getting done, merely that you don't hear about it...

I mean...did you know about The Last Of Us in 2005?

Death1748d ago

No, we did not know about the Last of Us in 2005. A matter of fact, when the Last of Us launched on the PS3, fans asked if it would be released for the PS4. Sony said they had no plans in October 2013 which was a month before the PS4 launched.

Guess what released 9 months later?

Fastest port ever, right? What possible reason would there be to deny the game was also coming for the PS4?

By the way, owning the IP does not make the game first party. First party games are made by first party devs. At best these are second party games since these independent developers were working for the platform holder but are not owned by the company. Sunset Overdrive is not a first party game either as many Playstation fans are quick to point out.

When do games get announced? I'm pretty sure Uncharted is on the PS4 box. We knew about the game before the PS4 launched. It's a 2016 release. I wouldn't say we don't get a pretty good idea ahead of time when games come out. We typically see between 1 and 2 years from the announcement to the release. Both Bloodborne and the Order were announce a year before.

_-EDMIX-_1748d ago

"Sunset Overdrive is not a first party game" Because MS doesn't own the IP....

Again...owning the IP very much makes them first party games as they are going no where. They are funded by the publisher and owned by the publisher.

Ownership of the team actually has little to do with being first party, second etc in terms of games.

When talking about teams, then of course....they are a second party team...making a FIRST PARTY GAME!

"Fastest port ever, right? What possible reason would there be to deny the game was also coming for the PS4?"

Nope. Ports can take legit weeks to be up and running. Its not even unsual for a port to be done fully in 6 months. I don't think you get just how easy some ports can get done.

"Civilization V was within 2 months, Borderlands 2 was within 2 months, Duke Nukem Forever was within weeks, Rage within 2 months"

"Is there an average timeline to producing titles? If so, how long does it normally take?

Again, totally variable from project to project, but generally speaking it takes about 5 months of work on a AAA title"

SOoooooooooo 9 months is actually fair and actually quite long.

Porting again doesn't take that long.

Even stating Uncharted's announcement.. that doesn't mean all the games releasing in 2015 or 2016 should be announced in 2013...

Halo and Uncharted are not the norm in terms of marketing, Sony and MS merely want to market those longer.

Games like Fallout 3 where actually announced 6 months prior to its official release.

You don't even know the state of those other titles either, they could be far off, still in concept etc.
