Miyamoto thought there was "no appeal" to Splatoon at first

Edge:
The quirky paint-splattered multiplayer of Splatoon was an entirely new direction for Nintendo. It’s unsurprising then to hear then that development wasn’t an easy ride. In an exclusive interview in the new issue of Edge Magazine, Splatoon’s development team reveals that Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto wasn’t always keen on the game.

It looks like him saying there was no appeal was a good thing - sounds like the devs went back and added the hiding and jumping and a few more mechanics and here we are - cool looking game that I'm glad Nintendo is trying out.

jmd7493733d ago

Yeah, just like he thought Wii Music was awesome.

themonado3733d ago

Well, I'm sure this game will be MUCH better than that.

Highlife3733d ago

It's also 2015 and no voice chat

herbs3732d ago

Very few console gamers actually use voice chat for strategic purposes its mostly children talking shit without consequence. However it would be nice to have private voice chat with a friend as an option.

BudokaiGamer3733d ago

If they are talking about the EDGE mag interview, then yeah that's what happened. Read this on GoNintendo and it had the full interview. It was neat to see that he knew more could be done and knew that they could do it. Now we have a game that I for one and super excited for!

pcz3733d ago

miyamoto is right, and it still has no appeal. i dont like the characters and the game itself looks boring.

i think a lot of people have nintendo-tinted glasses on when looking at this game, if it was made by anyone else it would be yet another run of the mill downloadable shooter

Hoffmann3733d ago

I will seriously be surprised if this game becomes a top seller..no matter how good it is. I just don't see many people being interested in this game.

DiscoKid3733d ago

Maybe you can explain why you think that? I don't like shooters but Splatoon looks really fun to me.

Hoffmann3733d ago (Edited 3733d ago )

The shooter fans just seem to prefer "badass characters". realistic weapons, settings in wars or battlefields and Splatoon is more or less delivering the opposite of that.

If my gut-feeling is right, the majority of the Wii U buyers don't care a lot about the fps genre anyway and while there will be some of buy it I just don't see it becoming a big success. It might bomb or be a very small success like The Wonderful 101 which was a great game but did not sell so well.

Gazondaily3733d ago

Its not a FPS. Its a TPS.

themonado3733d ago

@Hoffman: Well, good thing this isn't an FPS then

comebackkid98913733d ago

I'm still dying to play W101 (huge Viewtiful Joe fan). Hope NX is backwards compatible.

OC_MurphysLaw3733d ago

Once they made the call for no in-game voice chat I think the odds of this game becoming big were killed.

Reeze3733d ago

From what I've seen it, actually has a pretty large and devoted following- and it hasn't even released yet. I'm sure it will do fine.

mad-dog3733d ago

i see a lot of interest in this game.
Lots of forum members and journalists.

I was even surprised at how interested people are.

There is reason to believe this will be a succes.
It even seems that Nintendo is going to market this game.
Imagine that.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3733d ago

well it certainly doesn't have any competition from May 29th leading into June

Mikito113732d ago

Wow can you tell me the lottery numbers for next week too since you can se the future so clearly?...

Splatoon is gonna do just fine IMO.. Looks way more fun than any other shooters

SteamPowered3733d ago

I agree wholeheartedly. Its the Nintendo curse. Great games seem to be overlooked by the general audience. I love Nintendo games, but after 25 years I pretty much hold out for the Marios and Zeldas. Xbox, PS4, and Pc offer so many big titles that Nintendo pretty much falls by the wayside.

Nintendo have never been marketing whizzes by any means. Nintendo directs just dont cut it anymore.

N0TaB0T3733d ago

Why generalize what Wii U owners are into?

GordonKnight3733d ago

I'm a FPS fan and I love Nintendo games. @hoffmann quit being a video game racist!

My family is really looking forward to it.

mad-dog3733d ago

they should have made a Mario universe Paintball game years ago.

BosSSyndrome3733d ago

Well im glad they made some original characters instead of slapping Mario's fat face on it. I think the inklings fit the game way better.

mad-dog3733d ago

True. I agree. Though i can still imagine lots of great things with the mario characters too.
Will never happen though.
So i'm pretty hyped for this game.

RosweeSon3733d ago

Zavvi have just listed their Amiibo's £10.99 each and taking pre orders for Dr Mario, Olimar and co, also they got the Yoshi Yarn game and Amiibo bundle for £34.99! Splatoon looks pretty cool tho, taking of which zavvi have them also at £10.99 each (boy and girl)

By making pretty much only AA games so they can sell them for the same price as AAA games.

IAMRealHooman227d ago

By being threatened by dev teams innovating on formulas found in your cash cow, but are either afraid or lack the talent to implement themselves

cthulhucultist228d ago

Well with the exception of Zelda and Xenoblade Chronicles series, Nintendo first party games are usually less demanding (see Arms, Nintendo sports series 2d kirby + mario games, Mario sports series, Warioware, Mario Party etc).

Zelda doesnt even have voice acting for its characters most of the time and its games use simpler textures than lets say Horizon Zero Dawn, Last of Us, Gears of War 5 etc which means that the development costs are lower.

Even so, their games are generally polished and well thought of and as the Switch generation showed, many of their franchises actually grew considerably in sales (Kirby , Xenoblades, Metroid etc).

FinalFantasyFanatic227d ago

I still love Zelda, and Mario Kart/Party is always a good time as well, although Nintendo isn't chasing hyper realistic graphics like a lot of the other studios are.
