Former Epic president on the massive difficulties in development today and why he happily spoke at Unity's GDC presentation
Former Epic Games president Mike Capps--who oversaw the Gears of War and Unreal Engine properties at the studio--is now working for another major game engine company. Unity Technologies, the company behind the popular Unity engine, has announced that Capps has come aboard as its "internal advisor."
Epic Games president Mike Capps wants their upcoming Unreal Engine 4 to make game development time much shorter.
Great ¬¬ that means more games will come out too often and nobody will have the money to buy them.
Interesting, You know unreal is making it incredibly easier, especially for modders to create stuff with their engine, the need for actually coding is actually gone aside from modifying the engine. Their using a newish visual based system. (flowcharts and icons!) That means you can have more people who are artists and such which i feel will help games in the ways that people will notice. Of course theres still a need for programmers, there always will be, but their tasks are much more refined now, we should expect good results from unreal engine in the future.
Forbes: "Epic Games has launched the final chapter in its bestselling Gears of War trilogy, but it’s not the end of the Microsoft franchise by any means. The studio has Bulletstorm, which shipped earlier this year through Electronic Arts and was developed by Epic’s Polish studio, People Can Fly. There’s also the mobile hit, Infinity Blade, which Epic’s Salt Lake City studio, Chair Entertainment, created for iOS devices. Good interview.
Now that Epic is done with Gears, they have the opportunity to create a new multi-plat game to show what their engine is really capable of over all platforms.
this should have more comments, great article, now we can start to understand why a lot of devs choose the remaster route, go with what you know works, its sad but when you see developers and their projects get mercilessly scrutinized you can see why devs are indeed scared to create anything new, all that blood sweat and tears just for it to be torn to shreds by a gaming journalist, fully agree with capps and he has hit the nail on the head concerning this 8th generation of consoles, devs are scared to try anything new, so just remaster what works to bide you some time, great article
You're right, the order 1886 comes to mind. RAD tried something different and it got ripped to shreds. It's too risky to try something new.
