Nintendo's new console- NX- What can it be and what about the Wii U?

"We are just hearing of a shocking announcement from Nintendo that they will be working together with mobile giants DeNA on bringing Nintendo I.P’s to mobiles. But if that wasn’t enough, it appears that a whole new gaming console is in the works, codenamed NX. So what does this mean for the Wii U?"

Nothing. As they already stated it won't effect dedicated Nintendo platforms and no ports will be made.

"What can it be and what about the Wii U?"
Wii U is going nowhere.
NX could be a hybrid 3DS with Android OS for example for an easier port over to mobiles or whatever.

It's clearly a third console that will co-exist with the existing

Note that this announcement came almost end of March, end of the fiscal year. Nintendo are probably also trying to reassure and secure their investors.

Wii U is going nowhere? let's ask the Wii about that then. oh no...the Wii is DEAD!

LOL_WUT3744d ago

It's a successor to the Wii U. NX as in whats NEXT from Nintendo "NEXT-GEN" I for one am excited hopefully they ditch the gamepad for something more traditional. ;)

subtenko3744d ago

Nintendo as a company needs to change for me to go back to them. Bring back the days of the N64 and I'm back in.

garrettbobbyferguson3744d ago

@Subtenko

The Wii-U has been the closest they've been in a while to the days of the N64/Gamecube. Not sure what more you can ask for.

BC_Master_Haze3744d ago (Edited 3744d ago )

^ I can really only ask for 3 things

1. A REAL gamepad (no gimmicks) the gamepad isn't near the comfort or control of the PS4 or XB1 controllers

2. No system gimmicks, no motion controls, unless integrated with VR

3. 1080p 60fps minimum

Pennywise1383743d ago

@Lol_wut

Why do you hate the gamepad so much? It has the same buttons as a ps4 controller and has a nice big full touch screen on it. Not to mention 2 cameras. Sure it could be slightly more comfortable but that's getting not picky. I know a couple weeks ago I was sick so I downloaded legend of Zelda minish cap on it and I was able to play it on the touchscreen in my bed even with the system in the living room. I can't complain about that kind of flexibility.

DragoonPoon3743d ago

@BC_Master_Haze

1080p 60fps would be up to the developers. And what do you mean minimum? I sincerely doubt you have a 4k TV. If so, I really hope you've got a nice PC to take advantage of it. Otherwise you've spent $10,000 on a TV that can play about 10 Blu-Rays per year at native resolution.

chaoslh3743d ago

They just need a powerful system to play a lot of 1st party and 3rd party games, and a better online service thats it.

UltraNova3743d ago (Edited 3743d ago )

@BC_Master_Haze

"1. A REAL gamepad (no gimmicks) the gamepad isn't near the comfort or control of the PS4 or XB1 controllers

2. No system gimmicks, no motion controls, unless integrated with VR

3. 1080p 60fps minimum"

You already have the ps4 and xb1 for that (the last point is developer depended) do you really need another clone?

Nintendo as a company is in a race of one they need to be different and to 'innovate' more, plus their games are perfect for peripheral gimmicks.

(Personally, even if they get into VR I cant see me buying their solution for Mario or Pokemon VR and I surely wont buy it for just a single Zelda VR game!)

OT:

I believe this partnership with DeNA is to gain access to an established mobile OSs development environment and to have a partner with tablet/mobile hardware experience and existing infrastructure.

Therefore since we know they wont be dropping support for their handhelds and Wii U, I'm inclined to believe that Nintendo's NX system will be a tablet primarily focused on gaming catered exclusively by them with the aim of establishing an online market for their products that can be expanded to PC and other mobile platforms.

Well they talk about a new subscription service (probably akin to PS Plus/Live Gold) that encompasses all of their platforms, so it won't be "nothing"....

wonderfulmonkeyman3744d ago

If it's something that locks online multiplayer behind a pay wall, I'm not paying for it.
I'll stick firmly to my past gen consoles, PC games, and single player games, if Nintendo tries to force me to pay in order to play online.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3744d ago (Edited 3744d ago )

they didn't say it was a subscription service

it just a service for now

breakpad3744d ago (Edited 3744d ago )

new console again ?? then whats the purpose of buying the Wii U ?? just to play Bayo 2 and the upcoming Zelda....if they make the new system on par with the current ones (PS4-Xone)and completely bc compatible (Wiiu and Wii) ..it may have a point and be a good choice to buy

Bloody hell I only got the Wii U last year and now a new console. Even though they say that the Wii U will stick around we all know that it'll get forgotten about months after release of the NX, which has to be a response to being so far behind the competition.

I also have a feeling that this may delay Zelda now so that it can be a cross platform title and launch on the new console.

Don't like the mobile games plan either, they'll more than likely be free to play and charge you £5 just to get a mushroom, or worse yet to jump.

wonderfulmonkeyman3744d ago (Edited 3744d ago )

It sounds like you didn't read the other article detailing all of this stuff and are jumping to a lot of false conclusions, my friend.

Let me clarify this for you:

#1 Nintendo isn't abandoning the Wii U for this new console. Their new Club Nintendo replacement program that they're developing will support the Wii U, and they've stated, specifically, that they are going to see the Wii U through to the end of its full life cycle, which is a minimum of 5 years at this point.
All we're getting next year is some details about it. Earliest we'll see a release is probably Holiday 2017, if that.
So you're not being abandoned.

#2 Refer to #1. There's no way they're going to do that when they've built Zelda U from the ground up specifically for the Wii U, and have stated that they will continue supporting the console.

#3 No. There won't be any ports of games from the bigger consoles, meaning you aren't going to see a microtransaction-filled version of Mario Maker or Super Mario 3D Land, or anything of the sort.
There was a meeting not too long ago where an investor suggested Nintendo do just that.
Nintendo basically looked at them with scorn and laughed them off.

RINGOELGRINGO3744d ago

I get where you are coming from and I wholeheartedly hope that you are right.

The only thing I will say is about the Zelda title comment. Twilight Princess was a Gamecube exclusive at first but once the Wii was announced the cube version was delayed so that Twilight Princess could release at the same time. Plus in most countries it was the Cube version that arrived late (only by a few weeks) so you can see my trepidation that this may happen again.

Plus I wasn't suggesting that we would see ports of established games, rather new titles. Everyone one knows that f2p titles on mobiles are more profitable then games they buy outright. Mario games are expensive titles that keep their value and I just can't see Nintendo selling a full AAA Mario/Zelda for a fiver.

Baka-akaB3744d ago

I dont think they'll launch that new console without major titles like they did with the Wii U . So i greatly doubt that at least one major Wii U title wont suddenly become a cross platform project like Twilight Princess , to help them

voodoochild3463744d ago

Mellow out. Do you realize how long consoles are in development until they are even announced? You have until 2017 at the earliest...

_LarZen_3744d ago

And finally Nintendo games on mobile and tablets!

wonderfulmonkeyman3744d ago (Edited 3744d ago )

Again, you aren't going to see Pokemon Red on your androids and Iphones.
At most, you'll see smaller games like Pokemon puzzle games made specifically for mobile users.

_LarZen_3744d ago (Edited 3744d ago )

Yeah it's going to be games designed for mobile/tablet gaming. Not ports of existing games.

And that's a good thing.

Hoping for a 2D platform game and a Mario Kart type of game would be cool.

EDIT: But then again. Square Enix have ported some of their JRPG games over til phones/tablets. So seeing games like Zelda ported over could happen..

EDIT2: I know Square Enix isn't Nintendo. It was an example. And how do you know what type of games they will launch? You work at Nintendo or DeNA?

_-EDMIX-_3743d ago (Edited 3743d ago )

ummmmm sure. Until you do right? I'm sorry but its clear Nintendo is doing this for money, I'm not sure why anyone feels they will just safe guard their "Favorite" ips JUST because...

Every Nintendo IP will likely see a mobile game because of this. I see no reason why not. It legit sounds like wishful thinking.

Mind you...its cheaper and easier to port then to create from the ground up.

To say they won't port with no real logical reason makes just no sense.

"I know Square Enix isn't Nintendo. It was an example"

Its a great example! A publisher starts doing mobile games, begins porting titles over and creating mobile titles.

Folks can say "Nintendo isn't Square" but fact remains that they are a company that just made a huge deal to bring ips over to mobile to make money.

I'm sorry but Nintendo and Square still have the same goal of making money.

I see zero reason to not start porting titles over. For anyone to really question whether or not we'll see ports is a joke, its more like what won't get ported over.

Hoffmann3744d ago

Michael Pachter must celebrate today.

wonderfulmonkeyman3744d ago (Edited 3744d ago )

No, Square Enix isn't Nintendo.
If you see a Zelda game of any sort ported, it's not going to be a full out Adventure game; it's gonna be a mini-game-esque experience that core gamers will likely ignore.XD

@ Hoffman:

Pachter wanted Nintendo to ABANDON consoles for mobile development, and to put full-blown Pokemon games from older consoles onto phones.
That's not happening, so his celebrations are premature, if they happen at all.XD

caseh3744d ago

@_LarZen_

I wouldn't be so happy about that considering the company they are getting into bed with.

DeNA don't have the best of reputations with people who play their games. I won't go into it but anyone who has been playing Defender of Texel for the past two years will know exactly what I mean.
