Core gamers to drive PC growth past PS4, Xbox One and Wii U, says OGA

The gaming industry is in the midst of an opportune time when not only are consoles thriving in a growing market, but so are PCs. The Open Gaming Alliance (OGA) recently worked with the market research company DFC Intelligence to forecast important shifts in the PC gaming industry looking forward.

Great news for MS, Windows 10 OS, and DX12

traumadisaster3332d ago

I went pc halfway through last gen cause I was tired of not getting 1080p60.

Then went 4k before this gen was even annannounced.

Taught myself on a yt video to build a pc.

Still get consoles for exclusives.

3332d ago
Locknuts3332d ago

I did the same. Figured these new consoles would be as powerful as PS360 were for their time. They can't even compete with my 4 year old PC! Gen 9 can't come soon enough....

slappy5083332d ago

Same here, though I have to say iVe been disappointed with pretty much every exclusive thus far , and I've always been a primary console gamer, been really impressed with PC gaming so far , my PS4 been collecting dust !

mikeslemonade3332d ago (Edited 3332d ago )

That would be a poor uneducated forecast. Because The PS3 and 360 were obsolete by 2012 and that's when PC revenue took over. Consoles are not meant to go that long. 360 came out in 2005.

New consoles were 2 years late when they came out in 2013. Once Consoles are in full gear they will overtake PC again.

Just use your common sense.. Any gamer knows that in 2012 and 2013 there was only a short list of games on the consoles that were really good like TLoU and GTAV while on any mid-range PC would easily outclass the PS3 and 360 back then.

Now using common sense again.. There have been test and studies that document gamers playing all 3 platforms and those gamers could not tell the "superior PC version". It's because the X1 and PS4 output pretty much the same quality to average gamer.

Also take a look what games are coming out on consoles vs PC. All the heavy hitters have not come out yet while on PC the list of heavy hitters is small compared to that. And then going back to 2012, what heavy hitters came out on PS3 and 360 that pushed the graphics boundary!? Only two games GTAV and TLoU. While the PC had everything from Skyrim to Battlefield that just looked way better.

stragomccloud3332d ago

@Thebordem
Not one console for the exclusives? Not even the Wii U?
I'm a PC first gamer, but the Wii U can not be ignored. ...unless you're a wacky Sony zealot.

I've always been a PC + Console + Handheld gamer.

I love the benefits of each, and don't think any takes away from the others.

* I love playing Fantasy Life on my 3DS and with a game like that, I wouldn't want to play it on anything else.

* For PC I love playing Strategy games....the kind you can't find on Consoles or handhelds.

^ PC is still really far ahead in that department and most likely always will be.

PC gamers HAVE the patience for those types of games.....they often prefer them.

* Console gaming is it's own cool thing that I fell in love with back in 1988 via the NES.

* Gaming on a console with a good controller, you can get so sucked in you forget you even have a controller in your hand,

The movements and muscle memory makes it so you can just react.

^ I LOVE that....and you can't get that on PC & Handheld in quite the same way.

* Also realized games like Diablo/Torchlight are 10x more fun to play with a controller than with a Mouse & keyboard IMO.

* PC gives me a unique experience.

* Console gives me a unique experience.

* Handheld gives me a unique experience.

Neither is OVERALL better, but certain ones do some things naturally a bit "better".

* If your not gaming on all three, you really are missing out.

I never have a dry period of games....There is never "nothing to play".

The releases come year round as they all support thousands of IP's.

$500 PC = AMD 7770 + i5 3570 + 8 GB Ram.

That was in 2013....it's even cheaper now, and it's about = to XB1 & PS4, and in a lot of areas is much better.

* Running Windows 8.1 and loving it....flawless, no problems.

I feel like a Sasquatch in the gaming world sometimes.

Like I'm not supposed to exist....but Here I am, just positively enjoying a ton of gaming.

The only thing about gaming that bothers me is the lack of trying by some dev's and the outright lying by the video game media.

I don't even like ios games, but I "get" their appeal. I wouldn't play them though if I could game elsewhere though.

3332d ago
gamernova3332d ago

Eh, I wouldn't congratulate MS. All they really supply is the OS. I also wouldn't congratulate an OS that has yet to release or DX12 which also has yet to release. But I would congratulate all us PC gamers that stuck with our platform of choice regardless of the laughable doom articles and the so called amazing exclusives from the consoles. This momentum is allowing for Xbox exclusives to appear on PC and we can only hope that the trend with H1z1 continues and sony gets on the PC market as well. All hail the PC master race :P

Magicite3332d ago

Its mostly great news for Steam.

NuggetsOfGod3332d ago (Edited 3332d ago )

Dx12, free online, open platform, best online service and stores, free backwards compatibility(pc station Now)..

What is good for PC is good for America.

Consoles are closer to China and yet fail in china.

Yeah nvidia announced they sold over a million maxwell gtx gaming gpus.

Safe to say pc is getting more and more exciting.

Microsoft giving pc console like optimization & Now epic done gone make ue4 free while valve-htc make a vr device up against 2 other vr companies? Mictpsofy makes win10 free for a year and dx13 compatible with older gpus..

Pc is awsome no debating.

Consoles cutting out backwards compatibility and free online lol.

Great sales on console but the platforms ate going down hill.

IDK, I see plenty of evidence that the PC market is shrinking.. Or are gamers the only people who buy PCs anymore?

mhunterjr3332d ago

This article is about the PC gaming market... The amount of money consumers are spending on PC gaming is GROWING, in spite of slower PC sales .

RoKStevonidas3332d ago

PC gamers don't "buy" their rigs. They BUILD them.

mhunterjr3332d ago

@rokstevonidas

They build them with hardware that they.... (Dun, Dun, Dun) BUY!!!

PC gaming hardware sales count towards PC gaming revenuess, just like console gaming hardware counts towards console gaming revenues...

In fact , gaming hardware is the driving force behind PC gaming growth... Those guys keep upgrading their rigs...

SteamPowered3332d ago

When I see the amount of active Steam users it definitely does not lead me to believe Pc gaming is shrinking.

thehobbyist3331d ago

Or the fact that the most popular, profitable and most played game in the WORLD is the PC exclusive League of Legends. How can people honestly say that PC gaming is shrinking when the most popular game is PC exclusive?

Vegamyster3332d ago (Edited 3332d ago )

September 22, 2014: Steam has over 100 million active accounts

http://www.pcgamer.com/stea...

February 24, 2015: Steam has over 125 million active users

http://www.vg247.com/2015/0...

So 25+ million active users in less than a year is considered "shrinking", what evidence are you talking about lol.

uth113332d ago

Evidence is everywhere!

Microsoft's profits are falling because of it:
http://www.theinquirer.net/...

http://www.theguardian.com/...

http://www.businessinsider....

http://static1.businessinsi...

http://www.slate.com/articl...

Newegg used to be awesome, the go-to place to buy all things PC. But now their PC section has shrunk noticibly and they are hawking health and beauty, and lawn and garden products! wtf? Obviously their PC business can't be great if they are straying that far off the reservation to get sales

And even at work.. My company replaced all our PCs with Macs, and everyone was happy to be rid of them. I've never seen that happen ever.

Oh and Steam isn't just a measure of Windows PC, it's also for Mac and Linux too.

Microsoft's Upcoming Xbox First Party Lineup Isn't Enough to Chop Into Sony's Market Share, DFC Says

This time but with COD if Microsoft gets it then there marketshare will rise

sammarshall102391d ago

I have a feeling that it would hurt COD more by skipping PS

VER1ON391d ago

I feel you're right about this one.

GotGame818390d ago

If Microsoft has COD, it will be playable on multiple devices. If Sony bought EA, it would be PS5 only! Damn Microsoft.

MrNinosan390d ago

@GotGame818
Which Studios did Sony buy, that left out games ln Xbox?
The only studio that didn't already work almost exclusively with Sony before the buyout is Bungie, and Destiny is, afaik, still around on Xbox.

Crows90390d ago

Maybe at the start. But after casual cod players realize their cod games have switched to Xbox they will move over. Most will have no problem changing to Xbox.

Abracadabra390d ago (Edited 390d ago )

Any exclusive is hurt for not being multiplatform...
For example, don't you think Sony or Nintendo would earn more money by releasing their exclusives on all platforms?

As for Microsoft, if Gamepass isn't a huge success, I can see them abandoning the Xbox and becoming a multiplatform developer/publisher in the future.

Redemption-64390d ago

You are right. For example, COD I believe just made about $800M from sales alone, most I will guarantee came from Playstation. COD going to GP would cut of the money from sales on Xbox and if it ever leaves Playstation, I will bet COD will more than likely not even chart well at all.

I personally think this is good for other games if COD loses its sales crown

Redemption-64390d ago

@Crows90

Didn't Microsoft themselves say, they did a study and just about 3% will switch if COD leave Playstation? Even if you that is a lie, most will not switch, a small % might, but with games such as Apex or Fortnite constantly being among the top most played games. People have more options than they did in past. COD leaving is not a guarantee players will follow

outsider1624390d ago

If Sony can get their heads together in these 10 years and make a fps shooter, im sure that could happen.

KillBill390d ago

CoD is not going any place. Just as Minecraft has stayed where it is so will CoD. Anyone imagining different is simply wrong.

I call BS, tbh. Starfield alone is going to shift some consoles in their favor.

XiNatsuDragnel390d ago

I see I think COD if acquired could shift more but that's my opinion.

ChasterMies390d ago

Agree 100%. Spider-Man on PS4 sold as well as Fallout 4 on all platforms. So for everyone waiting on Starfield to buy an Xbox, there is someone waiting for Spider-Man 2 to buy a PlayStation. It’s bummer that Starfield won’t come to PlayStation. It’s not dealbreaker.

tay8701390d ago

Not even close to the number of consoles Spiderman 2 will shift though. They couldn't have picked a worse time to delay starfield to. Spiderman 2s sales will dwarf starfields.

ken2813390d ago

I’m a huge fan of Bethesda. I can only hope starfield would come to PlayStation. If it does it’s a win for me if it don’t then it’s cool. I’ll live. Im not buying another Xbox. And that’s hoping that Starfield don’t have a ton of bugs (something tell me it will). That would be the worst P.R. To happen to Xbox.

IamTylerDurden1389d ago (Edited 389d ago )

It'll be a big year for both. Spiderman, FFXVI, Silent Hill, Stellar Blade, PSVR2, n perhaps TLOU vs Starfield, Forza, Redfall, Hi Fi. But now that stock is available i don't see XB cutting into the lead. I could understand if PS had a weak 2023 lineup but it's just as strong as XBs on paper. I think PS5 will still outsell XBS this year but it'll be more competitive. Even with Forza, Motorsport isn't as impactful as Horizon. Deathloop was highly rated yet flopped commercially so i don't see Redfall as impactful. Starfield is a monster and will carry XB but PS has two monsters imo with FF and Spidey. It'll be a great year in general though.

Pocahontas389d ago

No people that love Bethesda will have a PC or both anyways. It won’t be none but probably some.

@Mr.Ninosan

That is not entirely true.

Psygnosis bought in 1993, developed games for PC mega drive and saturn along with playstation

Guerilla developed games for game boy color and xbox, playstation pc prior to being acquired

Zipper Interactive was developing mainly pc games before being bought by Sony for developing Socom

Haven also, did not have a special relationship with Sony

Lets not forget Bungie as well.

edeprez390d ago (Edited 390d ago )

1993??? Zipper??? Haven? What does all of this equate to the market leading series call of duty? You're comparing literal nothings to the biggest game on the planet. And not just that game. It's 2 massive publishers and a mobile money making machine.

cthulhucultist390d ago

@edeprez: you are literally creating arguments in your head that I did not initiate or discuss.

I am replying to Mr.Ninosan who said that apart from Bungie, all the other studios acquired Sony acquired worked exclusively with Sony which is evidently not the case.

Most of them yes (that is why I said partially true) but not all.

With regards to the acquisition, I am against it as I previously pointed out in numerous articles, given that it limits options for gamers.

There is no comparison between what MS is doing and Sony but I did not argue that in my reply.

MrNinosan389d ago

None of the above removed future game-series from any console.
All of above were small studios without any big games or names (except Bungie), and became big and popular after they joined Playstation Studios.
Still, not a single game-serie continued exclusively on Playstation after a purchase.
I never heard anyone ask for a sequel to Shellshock, Dizzy's Candy Quest and Rhino Rumble, but maybe you're one of those few.

TheCaptainKuchiki390d ago

If parity is enforced then it won't change anything. COD will srill sell the most on PS.
Yes MS will get the money and yes they will be able to make bundles. But that won't lower Sony's market share.

Babadook7389d ago (Edited 389d ago )

How do we know there will be parity? I believe obsidian already took a game that performed better on ps and made it perform worse.

Bathyj389d ago

Online players are very fickle. That franchise is only 2 bad games in a row from being irrelevant. They need sony as much or more than sony need them.

gangsta_red389d ago

I hope they're paying you enough

Bathyj389d ago

Haha.
I get it.
Cos like what I said to you right.?

bigfish389d ago (Edited 389d ago )

Sorry but I would have to disagree. Imo Cod if it moves over will lose players. Any sort of disruption is not a good thing in terms of growing a userbase.

"It doesn't take a market research firm to point that out."

Well if Spider Man 2´s Venom voice actor,Tony Todd, has any grip on reality, we´ll find out no later than September when Spider Man 2 will be facing Starfield.

We´ll find out which one most gamers will prefer.

Sonic1881390d ago (Edited 390d ago )

Final Fantasy 16 and Spider-Man will sell way more than Starfield because Starfield will be on gamepass day one. A lot of Xbox and PC gamers are not going to spend $70 dollars on a game when you can play it on gamepass. The good thing is Microsoft will get more gamepass subscribers which they're aiming for anyway 🤔 I can't speak on which game will be better but I do believe Starfield will be more like No Man Sky with better graphics from looking at the previews. BTW most kids, teens, and young adults prefer Spider-Man over a too realistic space rpg shooter that they don't know nothing about

darthv72390d ago

@obscure... If that is the comparative, I know I will be getting SM2 and give SF a try. It's not usually my thing but I do like to at least kick the tires on new titles to see if they interest me. And being on GP is the perfect avenue to do that.

EvertonFC390d ago

I'll tell you now, it's Spiderman 2

mkis007390d ago

Oh, I have no doubt that Spiderman 2 will sell like hot cakes. My point is about what game will win the gaming media, the headlines, the social media, critical acclaim, higher metascore... etc. In resume: Which game will be the talk of the town for the rest of 2023 and beyond? That remains to be seen.

@darthv72

That´s the beauty of being a multi-console owner. ;)

@mkis007

Definitely interested to see which sequel will perform better. Just keep in mind that the PS5 will not take advantage of a larger playerbase as the PS4 back in 2017-2018 despite the fact that Spiderman 2 will move tons of PS5 units. Especially bundles.

Extermin8or3_390d ago

Really? They'll get more gamespass subscribers. It has 25 million subscribers... how many copies would a game like starfield have sold? 20 million? Maybe but probably not. Therefore the number of new subscribers won't be substantial .

DarXyde390d ago

You shouldn't ask questions if you're afraid of the answer, mate.

That's a pretty obvious answer. Imagine how much worse it would be without Xbox Game Pass.

Redemption-64390d ago

@Obscure_Observer

Seriously, in what bubble do you live in? Spider-Man will have far more mind-share than anything Starfield can ever hope to achieve. Outside of gaming social media, more people know about Spider-Man and with a movie coming out, Sony will no doubt promote the game, with the movie. Reaching more people.

Obscure_Observer390d ago

@DarXyde

"You shouldn't ask questions if you're afraid of the answer, mate."

There´s nothing to be "afraid" of, dude. Spiderman 2 is the most anticipated game on PS5, Starfield is the most anticipated game on Xbox Series Consoles, PC and XCloud, both games will be fine. Which one will be the best? Time will tell.

S2Killinit390d ago

DarXyde390d ago (Edited 390d ago )

Spider-Man 2 is the most anticipated game on PS5?

Says who? This year, maybe. I don't know a single person who would say Spider-Man is their most anticipated title. If Starfield is the most anticipated game on your side of the fence, fair enough. Generally, PlayStation belts out a ton of unexpected titles so I sincerely doubt we've even heard of the most anticipated game yet. Many of us use "Naughty Dog's next project" as a placeholder for obvious reasons.

390d ago
Charlieboy333389d ago

@Sonic Yep, they will definitely gain subscribers.....aaaaand then lose said subscribers once they're done with the game

TheKingKratos389d ago

You are soo out of touch if you think for even one second that Starfield will even come close to FF16 let alone Spiderman 2.

Man, i know you are a hardcore Xbox fanboy but you are taking this too far.

Also, most if not all cross gen games sold far better on Ps5.

Obscure_Observer389d ago (Edited 389d ago )

@DarXyde

"Says who? This year, maybe."

Do you have some reading comprehension issues, dude? Both Spider-Man 2 and Starfield will be released THIS YEAR! So it´s more than obvious that I´m talking about most anticipated 2023 games on both Xbox and Playstation!

And there´s no "maybe" fyi. Spider-Man 2 will definitely be the best selling game AND system seller on PS5 this year. So you can quit with your disingenuous ploy bs!

"Many of us use "Naughty Dog's next project" as a placeholder for obvious reasons."

Yeah, good luck with that. Naughty Dog just DECIDED on what to do next, so I wouldn´t bet on a new game from them to be released on the PS5. They barely can keep up with what they already have, which is an old gen project.

Factions was supposed to be released along with TLOU 2 and till this day there´s not even a screenshot of that game. Nevermind gameplay. Druckmann said they will release "more info" later this year. I mean, more info??? Who care???

Naughty Dog is not as fast at development as they used to be during the PS3 era with Henning and Straney. This is nothing but cold hard facts!

DarXyde389d ago

"Do you have some reading comprehension issues, dude? Both Spider-Man 2 and Starfield will be released THIS YEAR! So it´s more than obvious that I´m talking about most anticipated 2023 games on both Xbox and Playstation!"

Read your own post. You wrote, verbatim:

"Spiderman 2 is the most anticipated game on PS5, Starfield is the most anticipated game on Xbox Series Consoles, PC and XCloud, both games will be fine."

Shoddy messenger.

"And there´s no "maybe" fyi. Spider-Man 2 will definitely be the best selling game AND system seller on PS5 this year. So you can quit with your disingenuous ploy bs!"

Spider-Man is very likely to perform very well and is very likely to move a ton of PlayStation units. "Maybe" is me admitting that I do not know with certainty that it will beat all other PS5 titles this year. You don't know either. Likely, but maybe not. For what it's worth, you are communicating poorly again: best selling game on PS5 this year? What if God of War Ragnarok sells more? If you don't qualify what you're saying as "games releasing this year", that doesn't exclude earlier titles, just needs to sell the most in 2023. It's also allegedly releasing end of Q3, which does restrict sales window. Spider-Man has wide appeal and it's just before the holiday season. I'd bet on it, but I'm open to being wrong. Also, Final Fantasy XVI with more time on the market and VIII Rebirth possibly competing this Christmas.

"Yeah, good luck with that. Naughty Dog just DECIDED on what to do next, so I wouldn´t bet on a new game from them to be released on the PS5. They barely can keep up with what they already have, which is an old gen project."

They have 2 teams. It is unknown what kind of game it will be. It could be smaller scale than recent works. You say they cannot keep up with what they already have, but THAT is disingenuous: maybe it is similar to Horizon where they are consulting with experts to do something new. Staff from The Witcher III helped GG and the current live service title onboarded Anders Howard. We don't know.

"Factions was supposed to be released along with TLOU 2 and till this day there´s not even a screenshot of that game. Nevermind gameplay. Druckmann said they will release "more info" later this year. I mean, more info??? Who care???"

How's that Halo Infinite split-screen co-op coming along? Fable gameplay? Xbox fanboys fascinate me: for your games, now all of a sudden, you're giving developers time to put out the best game they can. Factions 2? You don't, despite having no interested in actually playing it. It's ready to show when it's ready to show. No rush. Likewise, very little on Hellblade II beyond a facial animation trailer and one gameplay clip. Nothing wrong with that and the tech is impressive. Just extend that courtesy to other titles and behave yourself.

"Naughty Dog is not as fast at development as they used to be during the PS3 era with Henning and Straney. This is nothing but cold hard facts!"

*Straley*
Games take longer to make, studios aren't getting slower. You talk about Naughty Dog being more prolific back then, ignoring that each Naughty Dog team made 2 games during Gen 7. PS4 had a remaster, 2 new games, and 1 DLC. PS5 currently has a ground-up remake (not a remaster), a remastered game + DLC, and an upcoming live service game. Not bad. Is Ninja Theory getting slower? They released 4 games during G7 and they haven't made anything this generation yet.

Obscure_Observer388d ago

@DarXyde

"They have 2 teams."

No, they don´t.

https://www.videogameschron...

"You say they cannot keep up with what they already have, but THAT is disingenuous: maybe it is similar to Horizon where they are consulting with experts to do something new.

Fair enough, can´t really disagree with your point.

"How's that Halo Infinite split-screen co-op coming along? Fable gameplay?

Unfortunately, 343i had split-screen co-op for Halo Infinite canceled, my be related to technical challenges presented by the Xbox One hardware, not sure.

Fable might be facing the same "issues" you mentioned above regarding Guerrilla´s Horizon and ND´s Factions 2.

"Xbox fanboys fascinate me: for your games, now all of a sudden, you're giving developers time to put out the best game they can. Factions 2? You don't"

I´m not in a hurry for Factions, I don´t even own a PS5 yet. Maybe in the future when true current gen games got released. And yes, I´m all about giving time to ANY developer to fully realize their vision and deliver the best possible game they can. That goes for ALL developers worldwide.

My point with ND is that they´re getting slow and slower at each new generation of consoles. Don´t take my word for it. Just do a research yourself and you´ll see for yourself. The current generation mighty be their worst in terms of game output. Maybe Factions 2 will their only game released on PS5, if their new project turn out to be another AAA game. You cant deny it, but deep inside you know that I´m not into some fanboy FUD bs, because AAA game development of a new IP at Naughty Dog will not take less than 6 years to be developed. Just imagine a AAA Savage Starlight game (a man can dream).

" You talk about Naughty Dog being more prolific back then, ignoring that each Naughty Dog team made 2 games during Gen 7. PS4 had a remaster, 2 new games, and 1 DLC. PS5 currently has a ground-up remake (not a remaster), a remastered game + DLC, and an upcoming live service game. Not bad. Is Ninja Theory getting slower? They released 4 games during G7 and they haven't made anything this generation yet."

Good! You already got that covered and you know by a fact they´re indeed getting slower.

Remasters, Remakes and DLCs from RECENT games are not full-fledged NEW AAA games, you can´t spin this. Fast forward to PS5 3 year into the current generation and Naughty Dog still don´t have a single screenshot from Factions 2 to show. This is nothing but cold hard facts, like it or not.

"Ninja Theory getting slower? They released 4 games during G7 and they haven't made anything this generation yet."

Until June 2018, Ninja Theory was never a first party studio so your comparison doesn´t even make sense.

Now as part of Xbox Game Studios, NT has transitioned from an independent developer to full AAA studio! Unlike the original, Hellblade II will be a true current gen AAA game, so it´s more than obvious the team wants to impress and fully achieve their goals regarding the game´s overall quality and as far I can tell, there´s nothing that comes close to Hellblade II´s visuals in the market yet.

And before I foget, fyi, unlike ND, NT is actively working on two simultaneous Xbox Series projects/games. Hellblade II and Project Mara.

Starfield is going to be the Skyrim/Fallout of the current generation. That's a major item. A market research firm should understand that.

SullysCigar390d ago

A market research firm should also understand the market. It's been tipped on its head thanks to this ABK acquisition and Sony will be playing their cards close unless their hand is forced. This year's release schedule is unusually light for Sony, probably because they can't (or don't wish to) share it in full until they understand what they're up against and when.

PS5
Final Fantasy 16

PS 5 and Xbox will have the same number of total exclusive by the end of the year, and they'll have almost identical Metacritic averages

Hofstaderman390d ago

In an alternate reality lol.

BehindTheRows390d ago

The Xbox won't have any exclusives (games releasing on PC are not exclusive → Final Fantasy XVI and Spider-Man 2 will both only be on PS5 in 2023) and you have no idea what the Metascores will be.

Babadook7389d ago

I'd bet money that PS will be ahead on metacritic by then end of the year in terms of full priced games and also overall.

Anunnaki390d ago

TLOU2 Factions is also coming this year

EvertonFC390d ago

Nxt year, drunkman said we will here more this year about the game.

Vizigoth04390d ago

And Forspoken console exclusive (2 years). Even though the reviews don’t give it justice it’s still a pretty decent game. Rare opinion here I’m sure lol.

sammarshall102390d ago

Yeah Forspoken is good, though I'm not sure if they still port it to Xbox given that the studio is now absorbed

Crows90390d ago

Except I'm counting one game from Sony as a 1st party..all others could come to Xbox if the devs wanted them to.

Whereas because of recent acquisitions Xbox has tons of IP, that were intended for playstation as well, releasing exclusively on Xbox platforms and not PlayStation.

BehindTheRows390d ago

*Releasing also on PC

And 1st party/3rd party = irrelevant. One platform is one platform, and this year, between PlayStation and Xbox, only PS5 has games releasing solely on it.

Asplundh390d ago (Edited 390d ago )

Forgot Hi-fi Rush and Hellblade 2. Looking like a decent year for all 3 systems, Xbox was definitely way over due for a good year.

sammarshall102390d ago

Hellblade 2 isn't confirmed for 2023 but I did forget Hi Fi Rush

cthulhucultist390d ago

Hellblade will most likely be released in 2023. I believe that only Hi Fi Rush was omitted.

Sony list of games seems more appealing at this point.

richardmmorales389d ago

Surprised you put Forspoken up there. I'm still interested in the game. But the game hasn't been doing well for Square-Enix.

sammarshall102389d ago

Regardless of how it sold mainly due to how it was portrayed in the media and the bad demo, it is still a good game and I stand by that

Is this the case for MS to buy Sega or Capcom after ABK

Crows90390d ago

Well I think they'll definitely consider making a big enough purchase if the deal goes through. If only to put a stop to Microsoft buying up the whole industry. They'd like a piece of that pie too before they're severely outmatched in terms of number of exclusives.

Can't believe there's actually division among hardcore gamers about how all these 3rrd party IP acquisitions are bad.

edeprez390d ago

Market consolidation is bad in any business. The only ones benefiting are the huge corporations that own everything.

Crows90390d ago

@edeprez

Man its gonna suck if Sony decides to start buying up Capcom or square enix. These big devs should stay independent. Imagine resident evil 4 remake being exclusive to Sony. That would suck for everyone

kneon390d ago

@edeprez

Most markets eventually consolidate around 2 or 3 major players. The problem here is that the market is distorted by Microsoft using other revenue to subsidize money-losing business decisions that undermine the competition. That's bad for the industry in the long term

Xbox Game Pass Business Model Doesn’t Seem to Work While NSO Does, Says DFC Intelligence

What? You mean you can't keep forking over tens of billions of dollars over to buy more product just to turn around and give it away to your customers without raising prices? Satya, you really should have taken a few finance classes...

S2Killinit431d ago

Soon they will raise them and raise them good. Although, if you look at first party day one offerings, there really isnt much there for all the years the service has been touting it as the best thing since toast.

DaCajun431d ago

Everyone uses this model, look at how streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, and literally every other streaming service initially introduced their pricing.

They get you with free streaming with commercials or low a very low cost at first then slowly raising the prices over the years until the install base is huge then they start charging ridiculous prices even making us pay with intrusive commercials. Nothing new, it's just how businesses work.

No "For Profit" company is a charity and anyone who believes they care about any of us are idiots or suckers. One is born every minute they say, are you one?

S2Killinit431d ago (Edited 431d ago )

Exactly correct.

Not sure why you say it like we disagree. Everything you said is right.

crazyCoconuts430d ago

To add to the Netflix analogy, there's also this trap with businesses focusing on the increase in revenue as new subs come flooding in as opposed to the profit per sub. Then invariably when the market is saturated the revenue growth stops and investors realize there's still no profit. Im guessing that's the point MS is at right about now. Buying Activision would only make their situation worse

XiNatsuDragnel431d ago

This is definitely true imo because you buy these 3rd party content then charge a Dollar you know this isn't good business.

bigfish431d ago

Yes very strange whats going on. Almost like MS have a adopted a charities business model. Procuring content and giving away almost free in gamepass.

Hofstaderman431d ago

They WANT to collapse the industry and then pick up the pieces to their liking. Classic Microsoft.

Hypertension140430d ago

I lost count how many times Microsoft has offered me gamepass ultimate for a dollar, they really want to keep me as a customer.

sparky77431d ago

Well it works for me MS is pretty much funding all my gaming which is awesome. I've been playing more games and spending next to nothing to do so.

MS being last and a trillion dollar company is great if you are on Xbox.

Obscure_Observer431d ago

"Well it works for me MS is pretty much funding all my gaming which is awesome."

Hell yeah!

We been hearing this Gamepass is not viable blah blah blah nonsense since 2017 and here we are. XD

KwietStorm_BLM431d ago

You say that like 2017 was 60 years ago. Making the statement that something is not sustainable is taking into account all the numbers, including profit margins and returns, on a persistent basis for years into the future. Doesn't matter how much money a company has. Giving product away and/or hemorrhaging money in any one aspect is not good business long-term. It's the reason why companies kill off entire divisions before they start to drag their bottom line. You can hype up all these games you're playing all you want, but the fact is the service in it's current state will not remain the same moving forward.

"Microsoft´s lawyers"

How doesn't that make it worse?

Are the lawyers *lying* to the court, saying GP is doing poorly when its actually doing great, when such a lie would not only hurt MS's case but ruin the lawyer's careers?

431d ago
Flawlessmic431d ago (Edited 431d ago )

It's great for now.

But you all don't see the big gameplan, Microsoft will buy up whatever they can and keep eating the costs until the value is sooo good that literally everyone will change eco system if Ms keep buying everyone up and then offer gp at this price.

Long term play is put Sony out of business following the above, which they have the pockets to do, once Sonyis crippled or force to exit the scene, this great value and competition we currently enjoy will be dead and gone and Ms will go back to its draconian roots.

Iv always said a Ms that stays in 2nd or 3rd place is fantastic for gaming and gamers as they have the pockets to keep giving value while trying to catch up with no risk of going bust unlike sony or nintendo, if they were to ever become market leader or dominate the scene, bad times are afoot.

FPS_D3TH431d ago (Edited 431d ago )

Oof observer thinks the marketing PR team is the one who speaks honestly and not the lawyer trying to tell them the obvious mistake we all saw coming. Talk about copium.

The fact some fanboys here don’t consider the implications this has for any and all the studios under Microsoft’s umbrella truly shows how out of touch and deep microsoft may be up some individuals rear ends.

Obscure_Observer431d ago

"Are the lawyers *lying* to the court, saying GP is doing poorly when its actually doing great, when such a lie would not only hurt MS's case but ruin the lawyer's careers?"

Apparently they don´t care. CMA´s investigation latest report confirms that Microsoft dominated about 60-70% of Monthly Active Users (MAU) worldwide in 2022.

Snookies12430d ago

I mean sure, it may collapse. I've believed that for quite a while, that the bubble will burst at some point for Game Pass. Right now though. It's an amazing deal. Anyone disagreeing are lying to themselves. I've frequently stated that Xbox typically has an amazing first few years when new consoles launch. Then die off completely in the later years. So, I'm kind of expecting the same thing here with Series S/X. As for this moment in time, it's been one of the best gaming experiences I've had in a long time.

Plus, all you technically need is to pay for one month. Rewards points (if you keep up with them which is pretty easy) make it completely free beyond that. I haven't paid a single dollar in 7-8 months of having Game Pass Ultimate for PC and Xbox.

shinoff2183431d ago

You'll care when the games stop coming or ms just calls it a day

Lifexline431d ago (Edited 431d ago )

Right shinoff because in the history of gaming multiple studios and publishers have closed and even console makers have failed yet the gaming industry has only grown and flourished it’s the biggest entertainment industry out there.

Yeah… I think they will be fine who cares if they lose money means more money in my pocket. Like I said only PlayStation fans are crying about it. I don’t care about a trillion dollar company just my entertainment. They don’t think for one second of charging you more so why should I care. People have no common sense here at all.

saint_seya431d ago

I own an Xbox Series X, and i do care. Why? simple, because if something doesnt work, it gets removed, or changed (in this case, price) so, in my case as an Xbox owner i care, and others Xbox owners should too.
Its like expending more money than you make, you may not care at the beggining, but you will care eventually.

Or I remember when Piratebay was around and again Netflix was destined to fail
Heck is it me or Free to play game was destined to fail also...
But I have yet to see a game developer/publisher complains about how they lost so much money with putting games on Epic Games, Gamepass or PS+

Xbox Expected to Gain Console Software Market Share over PlayStation & Nintendo By 2026

The new forecast released by DFC Intelligence shows Microsoft's Xbox gaining ground in the console software market share over its competitors. Meanwhile, the PC platform grows thanks to console shortages.

Orchard752d ago

That seems like a reasonable forecast - assuming they keep being the more consumer friendly of the platform holders AND avoid any huge mistakes like the 2013 Xbox One launch.

Godmars290752d ago

That might be possibly, if they release games. If Starfield is well received or Activision doesn't - continue to - implode within four years

S2Killinit752d ago (Edited 752d ago )

Well yeah because the supply is limiting demand. The pandemic has been great for xbox.

Has NOTHING to do with xbox being anything.

InUrFoxHole752d ago

I love the fight in you. Keep it up kiddo!

S2Killinit752d ago (Edited 752d ago )

Well its true. Are we going to pretend its not?

WillyC009751d ago

@InUrFoxHole,

Love the fight in him? The Microsoft press machine has been churning this drivel out for years. The correct context would be for you Xbox boys to keep it up kiddo!

neutralgamer1992752d ago

It's not about messing up, what has really changed is the fact so many gamers have gone all digital over the past 10 years. That means they have huge library of games on Playstation or Xbox along with friends who play on the same platform

That's why when PlayStation lost the north American market share to Xbox 360 it was a huge deal but Xbox could not contain itself and let that slip away. Now PlayStation will lead and we are to the point now where if you don't have a PC you will need to buy both consoles

There will be too many console exclusives so need a 2nd platform. Usually I am a PlayStation gamer but I bought series x first because it's easier to get

Crows90752d ago

Well that's you. I could have bought series s or x many different times but didn't because it had nothing of interest. And it still doesn't.

I kept at it and got a ps5 last July. Haven't regretted it and have enjoyed so many great games from PlayStation and 3rd party. Still missing a few titles like horizon Forbidden West...but I may not get into it for q while because of elden ring.

Crows90752d ago

And assuming they actually bring out good games.

EvertonFC752d ago

I'm thinking more like 10 tbh

fr0sty751d ago

We've been hearing this since Xbox 360.

RosweeSon751d ago

When did that happen. Most consumer friendly 🙄🤣 wanna play online that’ll cost ya it was free everywhere before. They’ve bought up companies and let them rot, they don’t release games but sure. Starfields not due till the very end of the year if it arrives on time they’ve still not finished halo, perfect dark was thing I was most looking forward to and that sounds like a mess so yeah probably best to say in years time as it’s not happening any time soon that’s for sure 🤣

Orchard751d ago

- Free nextgen upgrades
- GamePass
- $60 games
- Not forcing always online for offline modes
- Not constantly re-releasing WiiU games
- Not implementing egregious MTX and then making them even worse via patches

Its clear who the most consumer friendly of the big three is right now. Hopefully the others adapt.

RosweeSon751d ago

Free next gen upgrades (they not releasing any next gen games) $60 games cos no one’s paying $70 for that dribble. As for MTX Flight sim out there charging £60 for a plane and halo charging £8 for a colour but yeah whatever 😑🤦🏻‍♂️ 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣 as for not constantly re-releasing Wii u games no they just released a next gen console and relied on backwards compatibility for its games 🤣🤣 each to their own.

Orchard751d ago (Edited 751d ago )

Free next gen upgrades: Xbox have released next gen upgrades. Cross gen games can still have next gen upgrades (see: HFW, GT7, Halo, Forza Horizon 5).

MTX: Halo is cosmetic, FS is typically by third parties. Cars are kinda fundamental to racing games but Polyphony felt the need to charge 10x what they did in GT Sport for cars 🤷 indefensible. Same with their always online (which you chose to ignore).

“ they just released a next gen console and relied on backwards compatibility for its games”

Weird, looking on metacritic for 2021, the only first party games in the top ten are all MS, and FH5 is the top scoring first party game for the year - and is still the highest scoring first party game to this day for these new consoles. Extend it to top 20 and you’ll get one Nintendo game, extend to top 30 and you’ll get your first Sony game.

Fortunately Nintendo are almost out of WiiU games to port…

I game near exclusively on PS5 (with a little bit of PC thrown in), but it’s clear who is delivering consumer value and who is trying to scalp us at every opportunity possible. I’m also not holding my breath on Spartacus being competitively priced.

Christopher752d ago

"DFC Intelligence surveys show PS5 to be still the preferred console, but that might change as Microsoft's Xbox library grows thanks to the many acquired game studios."

I mean, I guess if shortages stay the same for 4 years... sure? But, wouldn't Sony just move more towards the PC market just like Xbox if it was that persistent?

darthv72752d ago

interesting take. Let's say Sony can't produce hardware at the same pace they had been able to before. This could mean they obviously wouldn't sell the systems like they did. so... to reap the benefits of their software it seems logical they shift to releasing on PC at/near the same time. This allows those with consoles to buy in but also those with strong PC to buy in as well. It sounds like a win win.

I know there are those who say the heart of the PS is their console but not anymore, especially with the quality they have been releasing on PC. The only difference is the timing, but (like alluded to previously) if hardware is still hampered, they have to recoup their $$ through sales to other means more frequently than waiting a year or two after console release. They are wanting to support PC more and current market conditions are forcing them to do so much sooner than they anticipated.

Christopher752d ago

The Heart of PS is profit and market control. If hardware can't be the source, they have to move on/diversfy. Doesn't matter how much an individual thinks the hardware makes the company or not.

This article also is weird in that it says PS will be hampered by hardware limitations, but somehow Nintendo will put out new hardware and not have similar limitations as a reason why it won't lose as much market reach.

752d ago
darthv72752d ago

^^the "not anymore" implies the heart is actually their games. My bad for not stating that at the time.

They can now sell games to the PC crowd to help mitigate some of the loss of hardware they may incur. They would just need to take a more aggressive look at their release schedule. They have an in house PC porting studio who should be able to churn things out in a more timely manner. All Sony has to do is give the word and new releases could be out on both in close proximity to each other.

neutralgamer1992752d ago

Christopher

Not only that I guess they forgot the part where Microsoft cannot buy any Japanese publishers and Sony can and have already said they are looking to acquire more with the 10 billion dollars they have left over just from this acquisition period

Also ask yourself this who depends on their brand more Microsoft depending on Xbox or Sony depending on PlayStation and you have your answer on who has more at stake. I honestly do see Sony buying square enix and Capcom very soon and in my opinion them too are more impactful than Activision simply because of the legendary IP's they have under them

And for those of you who don't understand why Xbox and Microsoft cannot buy Japanese publishers here's the link that was written up very recently

https://www.videogameschron...

porkChop752d ago

Yes, Microsoft can buy Japanese devs or pubs. It's more difficult for a foreign company to buy a Japanese one, due to heavier scrutiny. If you're purchasing over a certain percentage (10% I believe) you have to report to Japanese government and undergo an inspection. But it is possible and it does happen. Many Japanese companies are either fully or partially owned by foreign ones. Microsoft themselves own Tango Gameworks, which was previously purchased by Zenimax.

Also, the $10 billion investment funds you're referring to are for all of Sony's divisions, not just PlayStation. If PlayStation could afford Square Enix or Capcom they would have already bought them instead of spending $3.6 billion on Bungie. Both of them are worth around $5.5 billion, each, and Sony would have to pay significantly over that to acquire them. The average acquisition premium is somewhere around 30% these days, putting each company at a $7+ billion purchase. That is not happening.

Sayai jin752d ago

@neutralgamer@ MS not being able to buy a Japanese developer is simply incorrect. Sure, that has been spun around for a while, but it's not true. It mat be more difficult, but not by no means impossible. Japanese companies being aqcuired varies in difficulty depending on what sector. Anything that is relayed at limiting Japanese STEM will have a high level of difficulty and if it would impede the Japanese government or their Self Defense Force then it's a no go. Japan has already made that a law. Japanese videogame devs do not fall into that category. They are tech, but not IT tech.

On topic, the video game industry might become jist like the streaming world of tv and movies, wherr you can get nickeled and dimed.

Sayai jin752d ago

The very article, you linked, which I already read, states that it isn't impossible. Inn fact he says he doesn't think it is very possible, ehich is his opinion, which every analyst has. He eveb said he thinks it would be very difficult, but not impossible.

As far as Sony aqcuiring those Capcom and SE funds play a role amd not just investigation by the Japanese governemnt. The Japanese government would be more likely to approve Sony before MS. The linchpin would be the anount money can spend. I would reasearch Sony's financial means. Money will definetely be a factor, so they could try to buy a percentage of one of those companies. Lastly, Sony has gone all end on GAAS, as per their 10 GAAS titles in by 2026. They are nost likely to continue to aqcuire studios that will help in that venture.

itsmebryan751d ago

@christopher
Yes Sony can move more to PC but, their lack of studios will start to come into play. They will not be able to physically produce as many games as MS. Look at the gap between releases at the end on last year. It takes time to make good games. Xbox has about 30 studios. It's not impossible for them to release a game every month for the foreseeable future and that is something Sony has never done.

Vizigoth04752d ago

The Variables this article is basing the analysis off of is Elden Ring lol, supply shortages lol, potentially new hard for Nintendo. Sony seems like more than ever have to address the bar when it comes to to consistent appeal which I’d say comes with from their first party talent which is growing and how they evolve into the live services spectrum and how they morph their subscription services into something that benefits the consumer but also ensures their business growth. All while trying to innovate for the future. Nintendo has their history of favorites with mascots and their risk on hardware why Microsoft shops for talent

SonyStyled752d ago

Microsoft is shopping for talent, did I miss something? I haven’t seen very much talent shopping, if at all.

Not trying to trigger anyone. Microsoft recently has been shopping for studios with IP’s to add to Gamepass, and there are some very popular IP’s with gamers, but the ‘talent’ that makes those games are technologically mediocre or average at best. We love to laugh at the little bugs and glitches in Bethesda titles and expect them since it can add to the fun charm of those games, but is that a good reflection of talent?

porkChop751d ago

Bethesda the dev is just one studio. So even if your argument had any merit, which it doesn't, this wouldn't apply to the rest of the studios under Bethesda. They're a publisher, remember? MachineGames, id Software, Arkane, Tango Gameworks, etc. They absolutely have talent.

Nacho_Z752d ago

Well, we'll see. Personally I expect Sony to go from strength to strength (and Nintendo to maintain the status quo) and continue to keep MS under their thumb.

jBlakeeper752d ago

I’m a Sony guy, but Microsoft has plenty of opportunities to come out on top provided they don’t screw anything up.

BehindTheRows752d ago

They've HAD those opportunities and have yet to win a gen. They need every region PlayStation dominates to cooperate and it's going to take more than promises from acquired studios.

Lightning77752d ago

https://www.videogameschron...

Its shows that MS outsold PS in Europe. Yes I know it's because of the shortages and yes it's only 1 month. The potential is already showing. If Starfield is a hit, elder Scrolls is a hit and if MS make COD exclusive then that's a probable reality that MS could overtake the PS5. However Sony has bigger games they have yet to announce as well, so it's not that easy at all to determine who will outdo who. Say if the shortages were cleared up by that time I still think Sony will continue to outdo Xbox. Though Xbox will be right behind Sony and won't have that huge gap like last gen. It'll be like 7th gen all over again. Nintendo would of already released their new hardware by that time. Knowing Nintendo, their next Hardware could be hit or miss.

LoveSpuds752d ago

Also, Xbox are not differentiating between S and X is their sales figures so it stands to reason that while PS is constrained by shortages, people are picking up the S as its the only console in Europe that you can pick up whenever you feel like it, then are available everywhere.

porkChop751d ago

@LoveSpuds

I don't really care whether PS or Xbox sells more. It doesn't matter. However, the Series S is available everywhere like you said, which means people clearly *aren't* buying them up. There isn't as much demand for it, which makes sense.
