The Order: 1886 on PS4 - Here Is What Gears of War's Dad Cliff Bleszinski Thinks of the First Hour

Here's the point of view on The Order: 1886 from one of the men that are considered among the founding fathers of the cover shooter genre: Cliff Bleszinski, who after working on the Unreal and Gears of War franchise is now leading his own studio, Bosskey Productions.

Cliffy hit the nail on the head. Plus, he was even nice about it.

I feel like, if the Order had gotten a pass. We'd be getting more games that's pushing cut-scenes and less interactivity. Doing more watching than playing.

That isn't what gaming is about. I want to be involved as much as possible.

The Order isn't the first game to do this. It's just a scapegoat right now. A game had to be one, eventually.

@OrangePowerz ~ Heavenly Sword got the balance right. If you're going to be about cut-scene galore. There has to be a balance between game-play and cut-scenes.

OrangePowerz3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

What`s the problem with getting more games like that? You don`t have to buy it if those kind of gamers aren`t your cup of tea. Why should I not games like that because other people don`t like them?

Heavenly Sword was shorter, had probably just as many cutscenes and was completely linear. It was a good game.

xHeavYx3781d ago

I know, right? The devs said from the beginning what the game would be like. I hate the "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist" attitude

Cindy-rella3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

Look at the back of the order 1886 case and itll say "crazy ambitious and highly cinematic" . Even the developers explain that its a very cinematic game before it was even out.

There are millions of people in this world that hates the ps4 and its exclusive titles just like millions hate the Xbox one and its exclusives. I remember this game getting hate weeks and months before release.

A lot of people keep talking about how the game is 5hours long , it has more cutscenes than gameplay, and its filled with qte which proves that most who says that didn't play the game. The game has qte but not more than games like god of war and others. The game isnt a 5hour game like people say unless you speed run through the game. The game has a lot of cutscenes but not more than actually playing the game.

Just like killzone, uncharted, tlou, gran turismo, infamous, driveclub and a lot of ps exclusives, fanatics will hate them because they are amazing ps exclusives that a lot dont have on their fav console. These games also are superior to other gaming exclusives for other platform technologically on other platforms and somr fanatics cant handle it.

Nothing graphically can compare to the order 1886 on any other system now and the ps4 is considered crap and weak by a lot of fanatics. Some people are so hurt over the order that in their comments theyll say that the devs shouldn't have made the graphics so beautiful. Basically they are saying the devs shouldnt have put so much work in polishing the game and making a high quality product. The order isnt broken by any means and one can critique it for what it does but you cant say its crap. Some people prefers the samey type games out there and some people dont. Play what you like and leave what others like without ridicule. I dont like cod and 90percent of fps that are out there but i dont cry about how they should be different. I just play what i like . To each their own

PoSTedUP3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

if it sells and people like it, there will be a market for them. nothing wrong with that. oh wait i forgot its all about "me, me, memememe" this generation.

@orange: yeah, loved HS, an underrated gem of last gen that got torn apart with reviews.

Man-Eee-Faces3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

OrangePower, because gamers buys videogame entertainment medium that is about giving control to the player and gaming is always meant to be that way even dating back to the $80 cartridge days of the NES. I would be upset if I have to watch through and have the controller taken away from me with cut scenes after cutscenes while playing The Adventure of Zelda after paying $80 for it. It is not that different than the same complaint about the MSV demo issue when Konami was charging $30 for a short demo and if that test pilot succeeded, then we no doubt will see more of that from many other publishers and games, and we definitely don't want that.

In regard to the Order, there is nothing wrong with you liking that type of game that is short on value, replayability, and lots of cut scenes Qte and whatnot but that is considered a niche genre and the majority wants and expects games that are made for the modern time with modern features. That is why COD and GTA are the games that are selling gangbuster version after version because it has the value and gameplay that are put in the hands of the players that is a standard that is expected from games today.

If I want to watch 1/2 of my game, then I go to the movie but when I have the contoller in my hand, I expect the buttons to be pressed and the thumbstick to be moving ( and I am not referring to QTE) either.

PoSTedUP3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

@manE

what determins a videogame? um, anything really. and many dont even involve a character that you control. there is no correct or incorrect definition of a videogame, just as long as it is a game that is on your tv.

and who is "we" that dont want Prologues? you "more" important people?? because the sales of GZ and GT5p beg to differ, as will the sales of GT7p. id be pissed if it didnt release and i dont get to pay MY money for something that "I" want because of people that have absolutely nothing to do with Prologues, there development or anything that affects them in any way other than just other people being happy about getting something they want.

bangoskank3781d ago

The problem is that it had the potential to be a classic title but its dependancy on QTE's and cutscenes make it more of an interactive movie than a game. Those elements add up to a boring experience for gamers.

SonyPS3603781d ago

This isn't the only reason people think it's mediocre.

badz1493781d ago

@theFro

"I feel like, if the Order had gotten a pass. We'd be getting more games that's pushing cut-scenes and less interactivity. Doing more watching than playing.

That isn't what gaming is about. I want to be involved as much as possible."

but that doesn't stop games from TellTale like

Back to The Future,
http://www.metacritic.com/g...

The Walking Dead,
http://www.metacritic.com/g...

Wolf Among Us,
http://www.metacritic.com/g...

Game of Thrones,
http://www.metacritic.com/g...

Sam & Max
http://www.metacritic.com/g...

and many others getting good reviews, outstanding even, for being what they are. they are more "interactive experience" than "games" like what people or the so called "reviewers" out there are saying.

TellTale's games don't appeal to me in the slightest for what they are but should I be parading to the masses that these games are CRAP because I don't like it? should I tell people that these games are bad because Telltale's vision of THEIR games don't appeal to me and not to my taste?

but reviewers and gamers alike are fine with these games and going as far as to praise them although they are exactly what they are bashing The Order 1886 for. SHORT, LACK OF GAMEPLAY, QTE GALORE, LINEAR, CORRIDOR EXPERIENCE, FULL OF CUTSCENES and LACK OF REPLAY VALUE!

seems like you agree with the reviewers bashing The Order 1886 for being what it is, so, are you telling me that TellTale are ALLOWED to express THEIR OWN vision of games according to them but Ready at Dawn and Sony AREN'T ALLOWED to do so? how does THAT work? I just don't get it.

journalist have been setting their eyes on the Order since the reveal and I honestly am not surprised for the low scores they are giving it but they are clearly bashing the game for what they praise other games for and I can't accept that kind of inconsistency. some of them going as low as giving 1/5, 2/5, even 4, 5 or 6/10 which are reserved for truly broken and bad games but ignoring the technical achievements behind it which is just plain ridiculous!

Letthewookiewin3781d ago

I really really like this game. It's ok if people don't share my opinion. It's not perfect, I wish it had deeper mechanics like a progression system, but it doesn't, so I move past it. The black bars disappear as you immerse and the shooting is straight up, some cool melee and great dialogue and atmosphere. That said when this game hits 40$ I believe it will be truly worth the experience for people on the fence. But I didn't want to wait and wanted my own opinion, glad I didn't listen to the haters, no buyers remorse from me. I'll be going through it twice to plat it so I'm looking at 16hrs easy.

kickerz3781d ago

Maybe save yourself $60 and go for a walk outside

DevilOgreFish3781d ago

what i notice about this game is that you hardly run, more like quick pacing to jogging. there is definitely lots of walking in this game. walking and talking. looks great though.

XBLSkull3781d ago

The problem is they made a TellTale game, and gambled by putting the entire budget into its graphics. Turns out that was a terrible decision. I already think telltale games are overpriced anyways, but The Order should be charging the $20 or so it is worth. Buy now and trade in tomorrow and it's probably an okay investment. Had they put effort into the game in other areas besides graphics they may have ended up with a decent franchise. As it stands I'd have a hard time believing a sequel come around after flopping like this. The meta score for this game at 65 is giving this game exactly as it deserves, I certainly wouldn't throw more money at a sequel to a 65 rated game. It really is the blunder the press was telling us when they first got their hands on it months ago so most of us aren't surprised it's been received so poorly, all signs pointed to it months ago. It's okay to like poor games though guys, just don't try to convince us that we are wrong cause the game is "good" we just don't like it. The game sucks, and you like it. You are entitled to that.

kazumakiriyu3781d ago

The problem is the game has no replay value. Nothing to unlock or do afterwards.

XabiDaChosenOne3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

@badz149
Great comment.

thejigisup3781d ago

It was a great game... Good doesn't do heavenly sword justice.

tman73023781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

@Man-Eee-Faces

The fact you got that many disagrees about the foundation of video games really scares me about people's tastes. I guess gaming will be hollywood next generation LOL

mikeslemonade3781d ago

You guys not supporting this game are being short sighted. The Order maybe short but the budget of this game must have been above $70 million. Developers like Ready at Dawn need help.

You may never see future AAA games from Ready at Dawn if this doesn't sell well. While tablet and smartphone games are booming. Support AAA games and especially exclusives!

That's the problem with gamers today is that most gamers can only see things at a surface level. They don't see how the industry is changing based on what you buy.

FrostedFire3781d ago

@badz149 4 of those games are being made by the same devs, there's your problem right there. And now compare that to the list of gaming coming out yearly.

cooperdnizzle3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

Man ee face. It's not all about you! Just because you have some imaginary agenda of what a game should be does not mean the developer/ artist consumers/gamers share your opinion remotely. I like cinematic games and always have. I have been gaming for 24 years playing games since I was 4 years old on my brothers nintendo. Do I like games that are more game-play originated? Yep! The walking dead games are amazing in their own right. Zelda games in their own right. Nobody cares about what you think is the right type of game. Your theory is so pot holed and lazy. Example I don't like horror movies so people shouldn't make them, its all about me. I like rock music some people shouldn't make Pop. Get over yourself

hkgamer3781d ago

Heavenly sword was great and it felt complete as a game.

What i hear about this game is that it doesnt feel like its complete and felt more like a prologue into a big series.

If there isnt anything too bad about this game i hope they get a chance of a sequel.

bouzebbal3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

that's why there is something called "gaming genre".. in a few years or months we will have something called VR genre. Meaning that with the consoles being advanced, we will see more of The Order like games, like what happened saw Heavy Rain and Beyond last gen.
Everyone is crazy about GTA but i HATE this series. Tastes are among things that cannot be discussed.
I'm chapter 3 or 4 of The Order and i really loved every bit of it, i like to just walk around and explore the amazing world. it's intense as it is, has a very solid gunfight system. It does have lots of cutscenes but that's done on purpose because the story is at center of everything.
If you guys want every game to be like GTA then it first means that you only think about your ass and not about other's tastes. Secondly gaming industry will die sooner than later. I wish people could enjoy games for what they are there for: entertaining. If it's not a game for you after you saw gameplay and trailers then save your money for something else.
The worst thing is this forum is infected with people who haven't even had the chance to try it out.

OrangePowerz3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

@Man

People buy games for entertainment. The 80s and 90s had many games where the player had a little amount of control when you compare it to games like Zelda. If people are entertained that's what matters and not how. I like all sorts of games, games like the Order, Heavy Rain, GTA, Skyrim, iRacing, Elite Dangerous, Madden, Little Big Planet, Flower, Fifa, CoD and so on and so on. I don't care what the devs do to entertain me as long as I'm entertained.

You can't compare selling a demo for 30 bucks when it's basically the first level taken out of the game and sold separately and afterwards charge 60 bucks for the rest of the game.

So what if it's a niche genre? If we only get games that are for the majority of what people want the variety of games will get even slimmer.

I love GTA5, but it's not really different from the other GTA games. The biggest chance is that you can change your character on the fly. Besides of that graphics have been made better and the horrible shooting mechanics from the previous games was improved on.

For you the game might not have the value of 60 bucks for others it can. I can see how much work went into getting the game done to the way it is.

Pogmathoin3781d ago

This is probably an enjoyable game, and yes, devs did point out at the start what to expect, but on sites like this, where it was used in countless stupid articles by fanboys to brag my sysytem is better than yours, this game will sell billions of PS4's....this will run in 4k/60fps...... This is what these stupid articles, Xbox or PS side do to games..... Its like a cancer eating the industry from inside out..... Internet is a good thing, but abused too much by those who believe they can say anything they want without consequences.... I want these games to succeed.... The more new IP's doing well, the more we get away from countless sequels..... Maybe get away from 'gaming' journalists with less intellect than goldfish.... Ready at Dawn should not be explaining there work..... If you do not like this game, do not buy it, and no wants to hear why it upsets you, you are not special, buy something else and play it, be quiet.

thricetold3780d ago

The problem orange is not gamers who DON'T like games like this, its gamers who do like games like this telling "haters" their opinion doesn't matter and that anyone who hates games who value graphics over gameplay.

DON'T you dare lump heavenly sword in with this game, that game got it right, EXCELLENT GAMEPLAY and looked good.

Glad you enjoyed it, how is other gamers stating these types of "games" blows ruining your enjoyment?

UKmilitia3780d ago

i have just finished The Order 1886 and i loved it,i really enjoyed the gameplay and cutscene mix.
was fine with me and not once did i think there was too many.

OrangePowerz3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

@thricetold

I don`t say people who don`t like the game can`t express their dislike, they can do that. They don`t matter when their opinion is that there shouldn`t be more games like it or it`s bad for the industry and that those aren`t games.

I think Heavenly Sword is a great example. I liked that one a lot and you did as well. Maybe it`s been a while since you played it but it also had a lot of cutscenes with short sections of gameplay in between. It was basically the God of wear version of The Order and for people who that game wasn`t made for they had the same opinion about that you and others have about The Order Want to read some stuff that reviews said about Heavenly Sword, mind you a lot of that isn`t from small sites but IGN and magazines. The quotes could come directly from reviews for The Order, but they are for Heavenly Sword.

"If this game was longer than six hours, we'd give it a much better score, but the length of it isn't quite redeemed by the great story and mediocre gameplay."

"we just wish that the same amount of care that went into these cutscenes were applied to the game's pacing."

"No amount of lavish technical polish and drama-filled cut scenes can disguise how it feels to play, and the fact that at its core, the combat doesn't quite cut it. Put simply, it feels like it's trying too hard to be different for the sake of it, and throws all manner of good, well-established ideas out to its detriment. Instead of being a spectacular refinement of what's gone before"

"Though it's mostly good, often excellent and technically spectacular, as a wannabe movie this can't help but fall short of heavenly."

"For all its showboating, this is an average action game with few standout moments."

indyman77773780d ago

To satisfy everyone on the next game maybe there should be an auto-QTE option, and an skip cut scene option. That way the executives can be impressed, the reviewers can be impressed, the few people that like qte will have a option to use them, and the people that hate qte can not have to do qte, it can do it for you and then pressing skip can even skip the whole scene if you want.

+ Show (25) more repliesLast reply 3780d ago
DougLord3781d ago

Games with cut scenes are not a "problem" some of my favorite gaming moments come from games with great cut scenes.

God of War proves QTEs aren't a problem.

Linear stories aren't a problem either.

But when you give us 3 hours of generic popular gunplay in between boring cut scenes with stereotyped NPCs, and you lead is by the nose from A to B, making the game artificially longer with QTEs that git between minute 4 and 5 of a cut scene, killing us for not paying attention.

Sorry it's the way the whole package came together not 1 or 2 minor things.

CaptainObvious8783781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

Doug, just be quite. Stop preading that complete horse sh*t about 3 hours of gunplay with 2 hours of cutscenes. This has already proved to be false.

It's obvious you have no interest in the game what so ever, except to irrational hate it. You have nothing to contribute except your fanboyism, so just get out.

Bathyj3781d ago

You haven't played it. That's obvious. I'm over 3 hours in and only just got up to the airship. Dislike the game all you like, but stop telling lies.

Muzikguy3781d ago

My favorite Dougie! http://youtu.be/aZglqkCRNt8

You've been dogging this game for months so don't even act like you've played it. You're always trolling, so I keep asking you to teach me how!!

http://youtu.be/aZglqkCRNt8

PhucSeeker3781d ago

Occasional QTEs when fighting a boss for some cool moments are great. But a full boss fight contains only prompted button pressing is not cool. I hated it in Uncharted GA, Dying Light and i hope we will never see it again in newer games. Even a damage sponge boss is much much better than a QTE one.

Man-Eee-Faces3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

Bathyj,

Not everyone has time to stand still and look in every corner to admire the scenery to inflate the play time. Most people play the game on normal setting and that is what most reviewers did and said on multiple review reports that it is a short game and are consistent with what Douglord is saying. Also he, Douglord, was referring to actual gameplay is 3 hours with players actually taking control of the game and not with combining it with the rest of the cut scenes, which is like 1/2 the game and avg total is like 6 hours like many reviewers already testified.

http://attackofthefanboy.co...
"After playing The Order: 1886 for myself and completing it during launch day, I’m sad to report that my playthrough only lasted for a mere 6 hours.

The playthrough was on the “Normal” difficulty setting and was a first-time run. The 6 hours also included all of the cutscenes (which aren’t skippable) and even the end credits too."

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/...
"If you were able to skip all of the cutscenes, the actual gameplay it offers is very miniscule. Another disappointing thing about The Order: 1886 is the lack of things for you to see.

It’s also short. Much has been made of this, and truth be told, I finished The Order: 1886 in about 6 hours. There are no multiplayer or extra modes to speak of, so when you hit the end credits, you’re done."

http://www.videogamer.com/r...
"Despite this, it's a world you'll want to spend time in, which leads to yet more disappointment. As soon as The Order really starts going, it ends. It's not the longest game – around five and a half to seven-ish hours."

XabiDaChosenOne3781d ago

@Man-ee-faces
"Not everyone has time to stand still and look in every corner to admire the scenery to inflate the play time."
So not everyone has time to stand still and look around supposedly but they want a longer game?
Your comment makes no sense.

Rodney253781d ago

What about MGS that series has cutscenes up the ass and MGS4 was the worst of the bunch, I played like four seconds of it and it was so convoluted and everything got explained away with nanomachines for me to enjoy it. TaleTell games work cause the stories are great. What makes this game any different? Also it really show's their true colors when they give this game a 1/5 like AC Unity barley ran when it came out I didn't see 1/5's for that game, but hey you could "play it for more than 2 hours" so it get's a pat on the back and thumbs up and keeps going right.

Rodney253781d ago

Oh I should clearfiy. I mistakingly said I only played MGS4 for 4 seconds I meant to exagurate the fact that you spent 90% of your time watching it and the time was boring as they had to explain away every single plot hole. I've beat the game 3 times twice when I first got it and again years later to confirm my distaste for it since I love the rest of the series.

If you don't like chick flicks, it doesn't mean you don't like movies.

Same goes for games. There's a wide variety of genres and types. Linear, open-world, RPG, shooter, puzzle, Kim Kardashian Hollywood...just because you don't like 1 of these, it doesn't mean "that's not what gaming is about".

The Order is a cinematic game. We've known this since Day 1. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

TLTR: DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS.

When I end up playing The Order, I'm going in it expecting a good story. I'm not expecting complex mechanics and upgradeable weapons and multiple endings. Why? Because that was never promised for this game.

WeAreLegion3781d ago

The problem is that people who haven't played the game are talking about it like they have. The game has plenty of interactivity.

Moe-Gunz3781d ago

Haven played the game myself I find the "takes the controller away from you", "only 5 hours", and "QTE plague" claims ridiculously exaggerated and absolutely stupid.

The sad thing is The Order is pretty damn good, but is bashed for things that other games get away with.

So far for me it's a 7.5 to an 8 out of 10.

DefenderOfDoom23780d ago

I just want to play , not watch cutscenes!

thricetold3780d ago

Funny you say that when these same feelings were expressed by people who previewed the order months ago.

It just one big conspiracy to you all huh?

It's simple people the hate comes from gamers who value gameplay over graphics being told to shut up because the order is going to change how you play shooters only to find out they didn't mean it in an engaging way.

I'm truly baffled at why it's supporters care, how is it hindering your enjoyment if tons of other gamers think games like this DON'T deserve all this hype over graphics? No i don't want other devs making short cinematic experiences with ZERO replay value but look oh so gorgeous.

Funny thing is if this was a 3rd party game it would be shredded by everyone for having zero replay value. Don't you dare mention "collectibles" that dont offer anything gameplay wise as a reason to replay.

THAT'S all we've heard since the beginning was how freakin gorgeous the game is and blah blah pixels, blah blah mustaches.

_LarZen_3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

"I feel like, if the Order had gotten a pass. We'd be getting more games that's pushing cut-scenes and less interactivity. Doing more watching than playing.

That isn't what gaming is about. I want to be involved as much as possible. "

I really don't get why so many people think this way. There are so many different type of games out there. Everything from the normal AAA games to crazy over the top Indie games.

There is more then enough room for all types of games. Having one type of game wont mean that other genera's will disappear and developers will just focus on that.

I am for variety and therefor I say we need more type of games like The Order. Tho I do hope if we get more games like this that they focus a tad more on gameplay. Because the 3rd person shooter cover mechanism in this game is at times horrible....

jhoward5853781d ago

@The fro

Right on. Like Reggie once said, "its all about the game"

Like I have said before, "1886 was a love letter to the movie industry"

http://www.gamercenteronlin...

Eddie201013781d ago

The Order 1886 is not a bad game at all and does not deserve any less than a 7 out of 10. These 4 out of 10 or 2 out of 5 reviews are bullshot. The game is not broken, solid 30 fps, the game play isn't bad, the story is pretty good, the music is very good, voice acting great, and the graphics are the closest to photo realistic that you will see right now.

dboyman3781d ago

This is Ready at Dawn's first console game. I think if a sequel of this game could be done, Sony should get SCE Santa Monica Studio (They did God of War series) and Naughty Dog ( Uncharted series and Last of US)to assist them to help with the tech and gameplay aspects of the game. Don't forget Sony often gets these Studios to help others with development issues..

DaGR8JIBRALTAR3781d ago

I'm deeply in love with this game, best game I've played on the ps4 so far.

breakdancefight3781d ago

Heavenly sword,Indigo prophecy, heavy rain and beyond two souls have done exactly what The order is attempting build on. None of these titles set the world on fire with critics, but have loyal fan base. With the exception of Heavenly sword with it's combo heavy combat system I feel the order does a much better job bridging the gap between film and video games. I am a few hours in and am loving the order.
This is a traditional adventure game with modern combat system that any tell tale games fan would kill for. The main issue of The Order is a poor marketing message and overhype.

u4one3781d ago

well said. i feel the same.

NuggetsOfGod3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

Mgs gets it right!! Lots of story lots of gameplay!!

All hail kojima for a moment.

I would buy the order for $15.. then keep it to look at the graphics in 3 years.

So will sony shut them down for bring ps4s overall games score below xbox? Lol read about that earlier also heard the deleted the order ytube channel. Not sure about that though

Sony gamers will defend this crap to the ends of the earth lol

The game is over priced.

sunset overdrive > the order so it seems.
Forza h2 > drive club.

Obvious facts.

The oder graphics > the Sunset overdrive.
Drive club graphics > forza h2.

Obvious facts.

I think bloodbourne will be the flagship.
Ready at yawn lol

Condemnedman3781d ago

Yep and we will still be playing it when your 50 to 60 pounds has disappeared into the bargain bins. I don't have a problem with a game of this type but imagine if you have brought this on a whim, chances are you will be disappointed.

Why do you concern yourself about how I spend my money?.

This game has given me enough entertainment value for my money and will be added to my gaming collection since 1985. Better this then me wasting more time grinding in Destiny for little value with time and can use for more productive work.

If someone buys this game on a whim then it's his/her problem if the product is not to his/her liking.

The game was advertised exactly as it is. If someone bought it on a whim thinking it was an open world RPG and get pissed then who's fault is that?.

Stupid points.

The Walking Dead and TellTale games say hello. Some of the best games and stories I've had the pleasure of playing. Yes playing.

Fro_xoxo3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

@badz149

Telltale games are "graphic novels" or "adventure" games. The fact that you're comparing The Order, a third-person action 'game' to a genre where tale telling is the priority, PROVES MY POINT. These games even have an episodic structure to them. Hint Hint.

Also, telltale games aren't priced at €69.99/$60.

I don't know about you, but I don't buy big budget AAA titles to have controls taken away from me far too often.

And, When I finally get to play. I don't get to do much of it. Oh, wait. The 'game' is over already.

The Order might have done better as a "graphic novel". Not as a TPS.

hkgamer3781d ago

Cliffy seems to be a nice guy. A developer should be professional when talking about other games and shouldn't really step out of line.

He talks a lot about how the cutscenes were too much and had a bit too many qte parts. I wonder if Santa Monica studios had part to do with this?

abstractel3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

I understand the opinions on this game are divided, as evidenced by theFro's first post's agrees and disagrees.

Is it worth $60? In my mind _YES_. Either you like the overly cinematic style or you don't. I do.

That's not to say there aren't a lot of things that could have been improved.

Cons: they could have spent more time in the shooting sections. Not being able to take cover behind the tables and piano was an oversight. Hand-holding in the first 45 minutes is a bit much. QTEs are also heavy handed and they should have listened to early feedback.

Pros: Best take-downs I've seen and the gunplay is really satisfying to me. Story and story-telling; Fantastic. Graphics; it's a work of art.

But I haven't agreed with the reviews in a year (Killzone, Infamous SS, AC Unity, Dying Light (where are the reviews for that one actually?), Driveclub, Watch Dogs and so on).

Predictably Bloodborne will get 9+'s everywhere which it will deserve, but to say that a game like this shouldn't exist by giving it 6 and 7s is poor. Only Gametrailers got it right with a 8.2. (Also the ones to have given Infamous SS and Killzone decent scores).

Thinking about God of War with this graphical quality makes my mouth water.

Pastorfuzz3781d ago

Anybody notice that you can't see yourself in the mirrors in this game? Not to nitpick but you could in Deus Ex.

LoveForGames3781d ago

Gaming is about being entertained... and this is what The Order 1886 did exactly for me - it entertained me! With a few short comings but it was a great expirience

thricetold3780d ago

Thanks for this. Made me realize there are tons of people who look at the gaming hobby as just something to do to pass the time until something else pops up to entertain them for a little bit.

Shame my favorite hobby has been mainstreamed. Don't hear many car hobbyist saying they rebuilt that 69 transmission because it was "entertaining" or gave him something to do for half a day until something else.

Dramacydal3781d ago

Games shouldn't be one-size-fits-all. There's a place for everything. It's getting more and more ridiculous, seeing developers prop-up their own family to speak their view. Rather than manning up and saying how he felt, while actually gaming WITH his pops, he came across as Maury delivering baby daddy results.

Point is this - like what you want. Be mad at the half-ass marketing or the studio for being unable to clearly communicate what the hell this game is. Not the game. There are many examples of this exact type of gameplay, being welcomed and enjoyed. If it's not your thing, cool, but don't act like this is the first game this gen offering last gen gameplay - Unity, Ryse, Dead Rising, Killzone, Knack, Smash, Pikmin, Mario, etc. All good games offering nothing mind-blowing or even expectant of an 8th gen video game.

We'll get there. Quantum Break, MGSV, Silent Hills, and Uncharted 4 all look like the step forward the PS4 and Xbox One should've launched with. At least Wii-U came with the tablet.

Damn. Every time I forget Cliff exists he pipes up. I'm not even looking to see what he said. I just don't care whether he liked it or not.

johndoe112113781d ago

Why the hell does anyone care what he thinks??? For some reason people seem to think that he invented cover based shooters and all similar games must be compared to gears.

MysticStrummer3781d ago

"For some reason people seem to think that he invented cover based shooters and all similar games must be compared to gears"

Bingo!

bloop3781d ago

I have no idea either as to why Cliff is regarded as one of the "founding fathers" of cover shooters as many have come before it. But there's no denying the Gears trilogy set the bar for the genre with some of the tightest controls. The guy has made some quality games so it is interesting to see what he thinks of other developers. He's still a douche tho!!!

ShabzS3781d ago

Well killswitch did it first but sure. Regardless of his contribution to the cover mechanic or the walk while we talk mechanic cliff is an industry veteran who speaks his mind. lol regardless that what he speaks belongs in an episode of jersey shore or not can be debated but he speaks his mind. I love video games. And hearing about games from someone who makes it is quite
fascinating.

krypt19833781d ago

@ShabzS that right tells me you don't know what the hell you are talking about winback released on n64 in 1999 the game had a great cover system killswitch came out in 2003. Hate on cliffy all you guys want he revolutionized the tps scene and gears is a billion dollar franchise so his opinion is more then valid..

ShabzS3781d ago

@krypt1983... yeesh man alright. if winback did it before that then thats fine. i stand corrected. I'm not hating on cliff. gears was my first cover shooter and i love those games. even judgement. maybe judgement even more so. i remember watching the making of gears1 documentary and hating the guy and how his girl friend broke up with him and how he reacted to all that. man he seemed like a kid. BUt like i said. he's an industry veteran now and hearing about his opinion on games is fascinating.

"I just see this as a fucking big experience that the money could have been spent in some other places to get a better bang for buck.

But you know, Sony needs to sell consoles. I always call it a system justifier. Look at these looks. It clearly looks better than PS3. That’s what they’re gunning for." ~Cliffy B

MysticStrummer3781d ago

Riiight, because up until now PS4 has been selling badly…?

You just confirmed my opinion of this guy.

tman73023781d ago

He never said the console is selling bad. He is saying Sony is a business, they need to sell more consoles, how do we sell more consoles? We make games prettier. To executives...awesome presentation (example graphics) = sales.

He is talking from a management perspective on how to budget the cost on other assets (if it were his game). Don't get butthurt, everyone has their vision and business model.

Though you just confirmed my opinion that you obviously don't know jacks*** on how the gaming industry works.

Ace_Pheonix3781d ago

@tma7302 Actually, PlayStation pretty much leaves devs alone to make the product they want to make. Almost every developer has praised them for this. R@D made the game they wanted to make, maybe it's not the game you wanted them to make, but you can get what you want elsewhere, while people who understand R@Ds vision and appreciate that kind of game will be glad to get something different than just another other "Gears clone". PlayStation has always been about producing variety in their offerings. That's why fans love their products so much. Just like how XBOX fans love them for giving them what they want. The same kind of game over and over again.

Muzikguy3781d ago

Cliffy has no room to talk. People are always critical of things. I could just as easily tell him where he should be spending his money on too! You don't do that, makes you sound like an asshole.

@iTech
Spot on friend well said

freshslicepizza3781d ago

people are so desperate for new games and sony always wants a showpiece to show the power of their consoles. i've said it before, if this were $40 nobody would say boo but pricing for aaa games are ridiculous and should not all be placed in the same marketplace.

Baka-akaB3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

People complained for Ground Zeroes and its pricing , and even called it a demo , so no they'd still moan and complain whatever the price for the short cinematic and/or QTE based gameplay .

The issue comes with the utter lack of acceptance that the game might not be for them , despite all the warnings since day one .

freshslicepizza3781d ago

you're right and that is why they lowered the price before release because of the negative feedback towards it being short. did they lower the price for the order?

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

the price was never $60 to begin with

Baka-akaB3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

And did they stop moaning at the new price ? of course not , it didnt even actually stopped , people just moved on to things to complain about ... my point still stands .

For everyone's info , i'm not even buying the Order nor hellbent on defending it . I have too much on my plate , and will only buy stuff again with the release of Bloodborne and Type 0 .

I like what i saw , and plan on squeezing it someday .. who knows maybe right before the Witcher 3 .

I just got nothing per se against QTE based adventures , obviously short , for a change of routine . I still played Asura's Wrath after all

joeorc3781d ago (Edited 3781d ago )

Exactly! This game was built from the core concept's to introduce you as the player to the Order:

What has become very clear ,the largest complaint is this idea that what R@D did was the wrong thing to do from a gamer perspective! And that is just not true at all if you look at the basis of this game was built on. Many I think are looking at what they want the Order to be, not what the developers idea of how they wanted to introduce the player to the order. It was developed as a intro to the games world from one of and a group of the knight's, the developers already went over this well before the game even released.

1) today gaming consoles games are no more just static content limited. You have DLC post release.

Which means unlike consoles in the past that you were locked into what released, was it, many games were only really limited what you could do post release as a developer? Yes in a time where there was no internet you bet, while today we have an advantage and rightly do because the developer cannot only fix such problems if there is a bug more handy to be able to do so with DLC, but also if the publisher and developer built the game with DLC in mind if they want to add content post release.

Which R@D already stated that this game was set to launch in post release with lots of DLC, what that is or how much is we have to wait for the content. For all we know other DLC would or could be from a 2nd , knight or group of knight's exploits during the same year in 1886 meeting more than just a ware creature!

This was an intro for the player into the Order: its like reading a book about the exploit of a knight a somewhat teaching moment and as a warning of what some things you may have to expect, instead of reading about it they are showing you.

In a release of a Multi-player component do you think it will just established knights only how about your very own knight?

The concept for the Order was not just to throw in other such game play elements off the bat because you could, it was about bringing you into the Order: its like bringing you into the masons: or eastern star.

2) this game, was designed as from the story of one group of Knights "the Order" see that right there, the idea about the Knights of the round table. The exploits of the knights are was from that knights past!. You are playing that knight or Knight's past expoit. The idea that many gamer's are upset that you cannot branch the knights exploit is upsetting to some gamers it would so seem to be the case. But remember
You can be told a story by reading or being shown the things certain knights had gone through. R@D wanted to show you just a hint at what is going on.

3) the concept of the Order is not to direct the player away from the core of that charater in this case it was to start you off giving you an idea of just a taste of what the world is about and from that character or group of charaters or the characters view on other knights from his perspective.

Do you think the Order's knight's only has shape shifters to worry about?

What is other older such knight's not telling me?

That is why R@D stated post DLC was very important for this franchise. Again many gamers may feel they could gather less of the story elements in certain way and just give more game play..which is true for themselves, but the developer had a vision on how to bring players into the games background and world, some may not like that or some will. For me I cannot wait to see what R@D has next up in the Order.

kratoz12093781d ago

Played it 4 hours straight last night,
Really enjoyed it just passed the bridge level, atmosphere is incredible

LOL_WUT3781d ago

Man that intro though! It really makes you want to play from start to finish. Ive done the first 2 chapters and so far I'm enjoying it ;)

isa_scout3781d ago

I played it 9 hours straight through today. Man the sequel should be crazy. I hope that the critical reception of this game doesn't deter Sony and R@D from doing a sequel. I remember the absolutely horrible reviews for Killzone on PS2 and luckily Sony stuck it out with Guerilla Games and created Killzone 2 and 3. The Order deserves another entry.

Why add multiplayer when the single player (despite enjoying it for what it was) had flaws?

You'd work out the issues with how you craft the single player then once you’ve perfected it do multiplayer after.

"Two sequels were planned for the franchise, The Order 1891 and The Order 1899. While the third game was never in development, Weerasuriya says he had planned where the story of the franchise was planned to go, if he had been able to develop the full trilogy."
...
Alas, we'll also might never get the PC version of 1886, which is currently residing in some dev's hard drive, nearly ready for a release if required.

Not even speaking about graphics that were way ahead of their time.

CrimsonWing6931d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I think MP being co-op would’ve been awesome. Essentially, I always viewed this as Sony’s take on the Gears series.

However, it really failed to measure up to what I expected. I definitely saw the potential but there were some things that really bogged it down for me like the forced slow walking segments (which I know was to hide loading), the repetitive warehouse werewolf fights, not enough variety in enemies, oddly we fought more humans than Darkstalkers, and the stealth sections were infuriating.

One thing there’s no denying though, this damn game was a looker. Such a shame at the wasted potential.

The Order: 1886, a Ten Year Reunion

WTMG's Leo Faria: "After finally playing the now decade-old The Order: 1886, what do I think about it? Is it really worthy of all the hate it has received over the past decade? Or is it some kind of hidden gem? I honestly think it falls somewhere in the middle. I loved the setting, the story is initially fine, the combat isn’t half-bad, and the potential for some awesome world building was there. It was all bogged down by too much ambition against a tight deadline, as well as poor marketing. As a result, it’s short, full of plotholes, infested with QTEs, and not exactly memorable as a whole. As a game you can grab for less than ten bucks today, I absolutely think it’s worth checking out. It’s one hell of a wasted potential, but for such a discount, I had some fun with it, and I’m sure you will too."

Great setting, great graphics, even decent gun play, but what a trash of a game. The fuck were these people thinking? We could've had something like an Alan Wake 2 meets Mass Effect 2 style game. With investigations, creepy locations to uncover and explore, people to talk to and even recruit, clues to uncover and connect, monsters to slay, side quests to get lost in, and a more expansive lore to go with it.

Instead we got a shitty AAAAAAAAA Third Person Pew Pew snoozfest. Awesome.

coolbeans128d ago

God. The "what could've been" you're describing would've been way better than just being the most empty cinematic shooter slop of that generation.

SimpleSlave128d ago

Right? I mean, I can understand people enjoying this thing ironically. Knowing that it sucks but still enjoying it for what it is. I get that. That's fine. We all have our guilty pleasure no doubt. But to come here and actually pretend that this is a top 5 PS4 game? Wow!

To pretend that this barely there game is anything more than an "empty cinematic shooter slop of that generation," as you said, is beyond ridiculous. But I guess Self-Awareness is some expensive ass DLC still.

Espangerish127d ago

-Foxtrot127d ago

Jesus, it had some flaws but you're acting like it was unplayable.

It built a foundation, a rocky one but a sequel is where they could have refined things.

Personally my only issue is I feel like the "Gears of War" like over the shoulder gameplay, especially getting into cover and the like didn't really fit the game as much. In Gears you understand that kind of gameplay because they are wearing super heavy amour and guns but in the Order these guys are super human, they should feel more of a breeze to control, easily jumping over things and being allowed to climb whatever similar to Uncharted.

I can't believe sony turned down a sequel to the order 1886 which ended basically on a cliffhanger. The game is amazing and I would love a ps5 pro enhanced version just like I'd like a driveclub ps5 pro enhanced version.

DodoDojo137d ago

About 2 million sales and not the greatest of reviews, I can believe it.

Tbh there's a lot of dormant Sony exclusives that are more deserving of a sequel.

ravens52137d ago

Have you played it? Just curious.

ABizzel1137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

2 million probably wasn’t enough to make a strong profit on, and the mid reviews didn’t help, even though it was a solid game just short, and could have expanded way more on the creature mythos.

Days Gone: +7 million / mid reviews (no sequel)
Infamous SS: 6 million / mid reviews (no sequel)
Killzone SF: +2 million (4 mo.) / mid reviews (no sequel)
Driveclub: +2 million (2015 / leaks say 5m) / mid reviews (no sequel)

Basically it looks like for the PS4 generation budgets were getting out of control and Sony made the decision

sales + reviews - budget = sequel or no sequel

Exactly. I came to post exactly this. The game was torn apart upon release. It's not shocking that a sequel was denied.

S2Killinit137d ago

Not “upon” release. There was a whole campaign “prior” to release.

In my opinion they should have made it a bit less linear and it would have been great. I did enjoy it. But the reception it got makes sense that Sony wouldnt want to risk a sequel if it was going to open up a can of worms with people who wanted the first one to fail.

It’s strange though Sony would be so proud about their work and overall quality but wouldn’t give them an extra year to, give them that quality.

Anyway he talks about if it was in the 70s they’d have had their sequel but Days Gone is at 71 on Metacritic and we don’t have a sequel.

Both games should have one, I think they deserve a second chance at refining and building onto that foundation already laid out.

neutralgamer1992137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

Definitely days gone 2 should happen. Who knows maybe now Sony will let them make it since bend had to cancel its live service game. Days gone 2 for PS6 sounds amazing

As far as order 1886 sequel it would be have been interesting. I think if this game was a RPG with 15 hour story it would have done so much better. Don't get me wrong game is great but you can tell the potential is there if they were allowed to make some drastic changes

Sadly this new Sony is not the PlayStation they are suits and spreadsheet guys. Playstation has lost its touch with gamers. I miss Shawn jack Andrew house etc

At the launch of PS4 Playstation was at its full strength with gamers running the company but not anymore. No we have a guy who loves horizon above every thing else and is willing to fund projects based on that IP

Redemption-64137d ago

So an IP that actually sell? Sony moved away from the type of games you saw during the launch of the PS4 because many gamer didn't support them. I hear people crying more about say Japan Studio closing than actually supporting their games when they were open. Wasn't it shawn layden who said many of these games fail and you hope a few like horizon to make up for the failed games. Maybe if gamers actually supported these games there would be more of them. Shocking right?

Redemption-64137d ago

There is no sequel for Days Gone because it didn't sell. The director himself said "If you love a game, buy it at f****** full price. I can't tell you how many times I've seen gamers say 'yeah, I got that on sale, I got it through PS Plus, whatever'.”

Majority of the sales from days gone came from when it was heavily discounted, and I have seen many gamers say they will not pay full price or the game isn't worth full price, but they will buy it when it's discounted. Yet they get triggered when the studio decides to move away from a game they refused to support at full price

jwillj2k4137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

What this is showing is that the majority of people don’t like the price. It doesn’t mean they don’t like the game. Two different dimensions.

Example: The company Take Two took advantage by selling NBA 2K at $20, completely undercutting NBA live to become the most popular basketball game. High priced games isn’t the only way they can make money.

-Foxtrot137d ago

Well. If we are going to go off that director apparently Days Gone hit 8 million sales around the same time frame that Ghost of Tsushima later did.

https://x.com/JakeRocket/st...

One was considered a failure, the other a massive success so I don't think it just boils down to sales.

Redemption-64137d ago

@Foxtrot

Hey, maybe you clearly know more than the director/writer. If memory serves me right, Days Gone went on sale faster than Ghost. Also, please know budget is a major factor. There is a huge difference between Ghost with a budget of $60M selling 8M, vs Days Gone, with a budget of $250M selling 8M after major price cut. One can be considered a success, because it had a much lower budget.

Don't Complain If a Game Doesn’t Get a Sequel” If You Didn’t Buy It “At F-cking Full Price, clearly shows the game didn't make the money it needed to make within the time frame it needed

Redemption-64137d ago

@jwillj2k4

What is shows is majority of gamers didn't think Days Gone was worth the $60 price tag and clearly Sony agrees with them. You can like a game, but if you don't think it is worth the price tag, why do you complain when the company decides to not invest in a game you don't think is worth what they are charging? They should release the game, lose money, cut the price and then you will support it?

jwillj2k4135d ago

Reading is fundamental. I said start with a reduced price not cut the price after you’ve already released it. It was an example to show how there are other ways they couldn’t make money. The idea is that number of buyers is much greater at $20 than $60. I didn’t think I had the point that out to you.

Redemption-64135d ago (Edited 135d ago )

@jwillj2k4

The number of buyers being greater at $20 than $60 does not equate to more money. You literally have to sell 2-3 times more to makeup the difference. Starting with a reduced price for an AAA that costs say $250M is pure stupidity and again would have to sell 2-4 times more depending on the reduced price break even. Or include micro transactions. They can make it into a free live service game with mtx. Yeah, you are right, maybe they should follow the route 2K NBA took

Clearly many don't think the game is worth $60. Who knows maybe the remaster can give it hope. But it would be funny if they get a sequel and people refuse to buy it at full price. Highly doubt those who think the game isn't worth 60, will be lining up for 70.

Days Gone deserved so much better than 71. I’ve noticed that some PlayStation games get attacked and it feels generated. Like money is behind the hate campaign.

Days Gone was that one game which wasn't really attacked by gamers but by journalists.

As soon as it was revealed they really didn't like it for some reason, it was made out to be because it came across as a generic looking open world game or another generic "zombie" game but at the time we had plenty of open world games and a fair few "zombie/infected" games that these journalists didn't bad an eyelid towards.

When the game released broken before the Day One patch it just gave these journalists a massive excuse to slaughter the game in their reviews.

On one hand, a game shouldn't have released in that broken state or at least they shouldn't have given journalists a copy without the Day One patch HOWEVER these are the same journalists who usually gloss over that kind of stuff with so many other games, take Star Wars Outlaws for example, the game was a buggy, broken mess at launch with plenty of issues, bad AI, some clear performance issues and a lot of quality of life improvements needed but it still did a lot better than Days Gone at launch.

Personally I think they knew they could get away with it more because Sony Bend weren’t that high up and respectable, they knew calling their game out as much as they did wouldn't hit them with any major consequences unlike if they hypothetically were like this towards NaughtyDog, Sony Santa Monica or Insomniac.

Yea and there was/is a PC version of 1886 too in 2016 ... but now maybe collecting dust in some dev's hardrive.

That's lame. It's not perfect, definitely a flawed game, but deserves a sequel. You already have the first game as a starting point just need to improve upon it. This could have been a much better sequel like the jump from Assassin's Creed to Assassin's Creed 2. The IP has potential.

But Assassins Creed sold a lot.
