Discussion: Has the Xbox One been launched earlier than Microsoft intended?

Lets get things into perspective first and foremost! This is not an article to promote console war bullshit, claim the Xbox One has some sort of secret sauce, or encourage trolls to emerge from under their bridges. This is purely an opinion based piece from which I hope to promote a healthy discussion!

So lets ask the question, did Microsoft launch the Xbox One earlier than they initially planned? Why do I ask this question? Well there are quite a few contributory factors that could lead to such a conclusion. The most obvious place to start is the competition, the Sony PlayStation 4. Its clear Mark Cerny and the team did a great job on both the hardware and the promotion of the new flagship Sony console, but did their announcement way back in February 2013 at an event in New York City leave the big wigs at Xbox scrambling to compete within a similar timeframe? Did Sony announce earlier than Microsoft had anticipated? Here are a few reasons that could have been case.

Most likely yes. I'm sure Microsoft would've wanted to avoid the bad publicity in regards to the Xbox One's capabilities by introducing Xbox at the same time as the release of Direct X 12 and Windows 10. The Xbox One was obviously meant to be incorporated in the Windows 10, DX12 and Halolens ecosystem, but they could not risk giving Sony a year lead in market share.

I'm not one for rumors and speculation when it comes to console gaming, but if what I heard on the Inner Circle podcast was indeed true, it would be a hard argument to claim that DX12 was not meant to be a major factor in the success of the Xbox One, as well as Microsoft's attempt to further push the gaming community further as a whole.

Good points

I can't help but think that MS was ready for a replacement for the 360.

There's only one home console that's currently in its 10th year of production. That's a long time.

nucky641431d ago

it may be "in production" - but MS has done a poor job in supporting it.

joab7771431d ago

I do agree. I think Sony forced their hand.

Okay, thanks for your constructive comment. It was very conducive to the article. I'll remember that for next time

On top of that the many versions of Dx11 alone! There was a lot of patchwork within 2014 alone for an API, people don't realize what that indicates. Goes to show per SDK leak it was to prepare developers for Dx12 and have a smooth transition without any drastic mishaps in comparison to previous APIS and OSs.

If Sony forced Microsoft's hand in retaliation to last-gen, Microsoft remained really strong. They reacted really quick and effectivley compared to Sony. Won't be surprised both console will be near even within a few years compared to Sony which took them a whole decade to catch up because of their sluggish start.

I have to take issue with your last sentence. If you actually look at the numbers, PS3 took world wide lead well before that. Also, keep in mind that the 360 was on the market for nearly a year before the PS3 launched. I'm not trying to rile up fanboys...I'm just setting the record straight.

Also, I don't think the plan was to launch with DX12. If that were the case, the Xbox One would still not be on the market. The ideas put forth in the article do sure make it seem so (great article, by the way) but I would think that Microsoft would have had to think that Sony would release something before the time that DX12 hits.

PS4 will outsell Xbox 2:1 for the entire generation. Xbox will never catch up in sales.

Sony has plenty of talented engineers that will make sure PS4's API allows coders to maximize its potential. Naughty Dog, ICE Team, etc.

uuuugh... YEAH!!!

that's what we've been saying this whole time! so the limitations are due to immature software tools. not weak hardware!!!!

oh yeah.... dat good old "secret sauce" bullshit.

I think it launched later thant it was supposed. 2012'd have been the year, with the hardware it has. Also, april 2013'd have been perfect for the hardware it has and seven months before PS4.
BTW, an Xbox One with far better hardware, launched in november 2014'd have been a total failure for Microsoft. Imagine if Xbox One'd have launched in november 2014 with more than 20 million PS4 on market... I think 12GB of DDR4, 2048Shader units and 2GHz AMD Jaguar'd be insufficient for winning back 20 million advantage.

BTW, who cares? Xbox One has great games for now and will have Screamride or Ori in no time, as well as Forza Motorsports 6, Fable Legends, Halo 5 Guardians and some more exclusivities before the end of year. It is a good time to be a gamer on Xbox, as well as it is to be at PS4.

Halo2ODST21431d ago

Have you played all those games that you listed, uh, fanboyism,

marlinfan101431d ago (Edited 1431d ago )

I think it's pretty obvious that it launched too early. Hell, the xbox didn't even have a controller battery power bar lol we coudnt delete game saves and a lot of other basic things. The overall ui runs a whole lot smoother now too. They had to get it out to combat the ps4 launch or who knows how big the lead would've been.

Dude I struggle to fathom why you have so many bubbles talking BS time and time again!.

BC_Master_Haze1431d ago (Edited 1431d ago )

Exactly, but long term they could be better if they would have waited for DX12 and Windows 10. They could have maybe realized that the hardware of the PS4 was a bit better and upgraded (not trolling, just as of now it's slightly better). If they hit back with a more powerful console, say 1440p capable with DX12, hololens and Windows 10 they would knock it out of the park.

^ just a theory, but if they did I would be waiting for the X1 right now instead of owning a PS4
