What is Peter Jackson's Halo: Chronicles? We look a little deeper...

XboxOZ360 gathers all they know about the secretive title in a hope to find out more, writing:

"The rumours have been flying over the last week about a new Halo being unveiled at E3. And since Halo Wars is already confirmed to appear; Bungie appears committed to their new "Superintendent" IP being unveiled next week; and a Halo 4 FPS just doesn't make much commercial sense when Halo 3 is still going strong, Bungie is busy and Gears 2 wants the limelight this year; our safe bet is on Peter Jackson's Halo: Chronicles.

Whilst we don't know much we do know that it has had the collective resources of Bungie, Microsoft (now with former Bungie writing guru Frank O'Connor), Peter Jackson's Oscar Winning Weta and the more recently formed WingNut Interactive games studio, for more than two years and has seen a significant ramp up in production over the last six months courtesy of some very public job advertisements.

Halo: Chronicles will not be a traditional game, rather it will be an "interactive experience/story" where a player makes emotional, moral and action-based decisions that affect the cinematic direction of what is otherwise a film.

Having done as much scouring as possible and tapping all the leaks (sorry) I could find, along with some educated guesses based on my long held interest in film and games (see my bio), this is what I've come up with…"

Expose after the jump.

All I know is if the author is right and it's as action packed as Lord of the Rings, as polished as MGS4 and then let's me truly "direct" the picture then I'll be very interested... if not sold.

Although I have a sneaking suspicion about how the site's that hammered MGS4 for the cut scenes, will react to this? lol

dachiefsman6158d ago

The cut scenes in MGS4 would have been better if it was chopped a little better between the action. 7 minute gameplay and 15 and up minute cut scene kind of takes away from the action. I like to be more hands on when it comes to gaming.

back on topic: premise sounds cool, hold off any presumptions until I can see some vids/gameplay

Superfragilistic6158d ago (Edited 6158d ago )

I agree about MGS4, which whilst I enjoyed could've have been extra-ordinary if it took the alleged Halo: Chronicles approach to cut scene.

If I could of played half the cut scenes in MGS4 it would be much closer to the top of my all time favourites. :)

Back on topic: Let's hope all this speculation's on track, cause it'll be one hell of an E3 show if it is! lol

EDIT:

@Pwn - I agree I'd much rather be immersed than passive. Bioshock and Portal also did that very well I thought. :)

PwnShop6158d ago

As much as i enjoyed MGS4 i'd much rather have the half-life method of story telling, i'd rather be immersed and interacting while the story is happening then sitting back and watching the story unfold.

Obama6158d ago

But the story wouldn't be as great or emotion arousing if mgs4 takes the hl2 approach of story telling. Hl2 has a good story, but that's about it. Nothing really surprises you or make you sad.

Godem6158d ago

i think i would by it in an instant, but if is just a "interactive movie" the game might be getting a lot of trade ins.. especially if its a $100 game.

Superfragilistic6158d ago (Edited 6158d ago )

Yeah I don't know. It sounds like a buy to me but I suspect with all this talk of it being episodic, Microsoft might use it as a trojan horse to develop a new type of episodic "interactive" game income stream.

The stories would have to be pretty complex, diverse and epic to warrant replay value. Although given Peter Jackson's history I don't think that'd be a problem! lol

nirwanda6158d ago

this from the description just sounds like another nighttrap but hopefully it will end up more like a good RPG

Godem6158d ago

yeah, just give Aussies the Video Marketplace already! lol

So is this Peter Jacksons response to the Halo movie not being made?

Superfragilistic6158d ago

Haha! I'd never thought of that. Maybe he's realised 12million audience members on Live is a far better financial proposition than an unknown audience for a much more expensive film production, marketing and distribution exercise.

Bubbles for raising two really good points! :)

Immortal Kaim6158d ago

This concept is something I would never have expected, fan reaction will be interesting. I guess we will find out at E3 if this hypothesis is correct. Interesting idea though.

Shroomy6158d ago

Bubbles for you!

It makes sense Jackson is targeting Live, and he'll have Bungie/Microsoft's support on the project, but if like you said, if it's anywhere as Epic as LOTR was then we are in for a great surprise! :D

Superfragilistic6158d ago (Edited 6158d ago )

"The closest parallel I can draw is a much more tightly directed, scripted and dramatically paced MGS4 where the cut-scenes are the game itself, with a more advanced “interactive philosophy” than that seen in the entirely dialogue focused system in Mass Effect’s cinematics. It will demand player choice that is truly interactive, has real consequences and that progresses the narrative down distinctly different paths."

The last part sounds like a marketing pitch! lol But the idea of an MGS4/Mass Effect lovechild in a Halo universe has sure got my attention. :)

PS: Thanks for Bubbles, have some on me! :)

Bungie at that time became the most wonderful bunch of hypocrites in the gaming industry. Knowing this now, gosh the entitlement they felt was out of this world.

Nothing like buying yourself from Microsoft because you don't want to be the Halo Studio anymore, and the FIRST THING you do is sign your next IP over to Activision, for a DECADE, while they are in the middle of ousting the heads of Infinity Ward so they can exert even more control over COD while screwing out the devs at IW...

Should've come as no surprise then that Activision gutted the content of Destiny 1 before launch and was a horrible partner through Destiny 2, until history repeated itself and Bungie had to split from Activision only to wind up in the arms of another major conglomerate that also doesn't know how to handle these unmanageable devs.

Profchaos27d ago

Tti their credit they praised the technical abilities of 343 and I remember at the time thinking halo 4 was a huge graphical leap above reach everything else was rubbish when I actually got to play it but there was no doubt it looked good for the 360 and is probably the best looking game on the system.

But ultimately I think bungie has always had a leadership problem and going independent ultimately proved this it's only getting worse with studio heads being outed by Sony for abuse allegations seems like all bungies past success has been in spite of management not because of it.

But really I think the bungie we have today is not the same one we had in that Xbox era of Bungie

PhillyDonJawn27d ago

I liked the artstyle change. For the most part. Something looked worse but most of everything else looked better. Weapons and vehicles for sure. The wraith come to my mind instantly.
And how can they get mad when the bungie changed it with Halo Reach?

I know a lot of people dislike Halo 4’s arts style, but there’s thing about it I like and dislike. Personally, the Halo 4 design of Master Chief’s armour is my favourite depiction of the character’s armour.
