Seriously: Is your TV randomly being turned on overnight by your console?

Steve Wright writes, "For the past week, I’ve woken up in the morning to find my living room TV on, but nothing else.

"Every. Single. Morning."

I can say without reservation...Nope

Maybe you yell in your sleep XBox on!!

well, since you eliminated the xbox, try eliminating the ps4

kneon3793d ago

He's probably got HDMI CEC enabled and when one of the consoles turns on to check for updates the TV also turns on.

SilentNegotiator3793d ago

Probably. All of the connectivity features on modern TVs can be nice, but also sometimes a hassle.

Bathyj3793d ago

This is what Im thinking. Even if it is, its still not random, you schedule when it turns on dont you?

Its strange but, cos I've woken up to find my PS3 doing an update, but the TV isnt on. Maybe this guy just drinks.

Ashlen3793d ago

This is the correct answer.

jspsc1233793d ago

it has to be a hdmi issue. i turn all that off. when i first set it up i turned off my ps and it turned off my tv and receiver at the same time.

WildArmed3793d ago

It should only turn on when someone hits the controller (if you have the HDMI CEC enabled).

When I remote play my PS4, the PS4 doesn't turn on my surround system or HDTV. But when I hit the PS button my DS4 (regardless of whether the PS4 is off or in remote play), both my surround system and TV turn on.

Neither my PS3, PS4 nor Xbox 360 do that (I keep HDMI CEC enable on all that support it).

dumahim3793d ago

It shouldn't be turning on for updates. It has a stand-by mode that can work with main power off to handle that.

rainslacker3793d ago

Maybe, but my TV is set up to turn on whenever I turn on any device connected to it through HDMI-CEC. Will turn on my receiver as well and switch the input automatically, and I don't have this problem.

I've been up at night and heard my PS3 or PS4 turn on for updates and nothing else came on.

To my knowledge there is no special setting other than to enable HDMI-CEC.

I don't think the PS3 or the PS4 send out any kind of signal for any kind of update turn on. I've had it come on for updates late at night without it auto-switching the receiver, and with the receiver still on and the input switched to it, and nothing ever showed up on screen.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3793d ago

This is what I have noticed so far (Xbox One).

A Friend of mine went out of town for a few weeks, He let me borrow his brand new 55" LED 240hz TV while he was gone. Went I hooked it up in my living room, I sat my 60hz 42" LCD in the floor next to the stand with ONLY the power plugged in (no HDMI,etc.). When I said "Xbox On" it turned on my tv and his tv, I did not program his tv to my Xbox yet nor was my controller on when it turned on my tv. That's when I found out that it's all controlled through the Xbox's infrared, NOT the HDMI lol. He could of had another TV of the same brand and it turned it on when his TV turned off?

Ballsack3793d ago

I think he needs a priest to do a cleansing of his whole house

Call ghostbusters or something...

GameSpawn3793d ago (Edited 3793d ago )

@kneon

I don't know how the Xbox One's HDMI-CEC works, but with my PS4 and PS3 if they turn themselves on for updates or to check for available downloads or (in the PS4's case) for remote play my AV receiver and TV remain unaffected. If they are off they stay off, if they are on a different input or channel, they stay on that input or channel.

The ONLY time my PS3 has been turned on in the night and switched the inputs is when one of our cats walked across the PS3's Bluetooth remote (ANY button pressed on the remote powers on the PS3 - seriously annoying sometimes).

ThanatosDMC3793d ago

His TV is possessed by a ghost. He needs to submerge it in holy water, and then when he's done try to turn it on again. If it doesnt turn on, then the evil ghost was correctly exorcised.

UnHoly_One3793d ago

I bet it's not related to his consoles at all.

He could have a TV remote with a dying battery, or the main board in his TV could be going bad.

JoGam3793d ago

Nope. The last time I thought my console turned on by itself was when I rolled over and hit the ps button on the controller.

Muzikguy3793d ago (Edited 3793d ago )

Seems a bit paranoid if you ask me. It's probably something so stupid they would feel stupid when they found out like...

@kneon
YES!!! +1 for using intelligence :)

Edit: @hysteria
Not that cheap? I've never had a problem, maybe it's a country thing idk. I never shut my computer off or anything

Snookies123793d ago

Spooky ghosts? Hey, they might want to game while you're asleep, nothing wrong with that.

SilentNegotiator3793d ago (Edited 3793d ago )

If ghosts came to my house just to play my game console while I wasn't using it, I wouldn't even be mad.

So long as they don't overwrite my saves or anything.

Snookies123793d ago

That's what I'm saying man, I mean shoot... You're not using it when you're asleep lol.

Muzikguy3793d ago

I wouldn't mind either. Maybe we can get some co op in or something? I'd be cool with that too

traumadisaster3793d ago

Around 3am often the ps3 cranks up and if I'm up for another reason I hear it. It's usually in the man cave but moved it to the bedroom a few weeks ago.

Snookies123793d ago

Well yeah, that's its automatic update time. You can change that in the settings for when you want it to do that.

kayoss3793d ago

The author probably got caught by his wife when he wakes up in the middle of the night to play games. When he got caught by his wife his excuse was probably, "I heard the tv turn on so i went to investigate." To avoid being chained up, he have to continue with his lies. Whats a better way of proving innocent than to write an article knowing that N4g will approve of.

Pogmathoin3793d ago

Many mornings my wife has yelled the TV is on in the basement....... I am sure it was off...

DarkOcelet3793d ago

My X360 used to turn on by itself many times, it was really scary at times especially when i hear the power on sound and i would be like WTF!. But i got used to it.

Sony is all-in on PlayStation Plus, says its most expensive tier is thriving

Sony kicks off PS Plus' 15th anniversary by chatting with Game File about the past, present and future of its gaming subscription service: Talking price, catalogue tweaks and where the PS3 games are.

Glad, I’m about to downgrade when they raise the price. For me, I don’t really access much or care about the games they have in the library and if I do, it’d be cheaper to just buy them over time rather than stick to some expensive subscription model.

crazyCoconuts19h ago

When you're new to the service you've got an avalanche of games to play. After you catch up, I agree, it's not worth it beyond the Essential tier for me.
That being said, the Essential tier is the best deal in console gaming imo, based on the monthly games you get to keep.

Profchaos13h ago

Yeah same will be downgrading $214 aud is insane and we don't even get the streaming capabilities in Australia which they said would make the top level subscription cheaper.

If i was to just buy the games I actually play that come to the service id be far better off.

Ill keep the essential tier to retain the games ive collected since the ps3 and for mp but I'm not convinced of the premium tiers value any more

victorMaje10h ago

Went back to essential a few months ago. I’m buying more physical and it has helped in finishing more games.

Profchaos45m ago

Tend to agree if i go to the trouble of buying a disc ill typically finish it

Alos8820h ago

Extra is probably the best value for money right now, Premium doesn't have anything special enough to justify paying the additional imo.

OtterX20h ago

*unless you have a Portal & you catch Premium on discount during Days of Play or Black Friday.

Yea, I really do wish they'd up their effort on Premium titles, but allowing a large catalog of titles that can stream to your Portal without even having to use your PS5 is pretty awesome. We travel about 2 hours to stay with my inlaws from time to time, so it's been pretty killer to only need to take my Portal for that!

andy8519h ago

Yup if you have a portal premium is the best tier for sure

KyRo3h ago

Extra has been getting worse and worse each month. I've had it since it's launch and it's been great to play some games I may not have played but the selection has been declining rapidly for a while now. My sub runs out in August and I'll be going back to essential. They actually add games to that which are more appealing.

jznrpg20h ago

Add some more classics with trophies. Vagrant Story first

OtterX20h ago

Nice choice. I agree!

Jeanne D'Arc was my favorite PS+ catalog title from last year & I Platinumed it!

Eonjay17h ago

I like Ridge Racer, Tekken and Grandia. Add Xenogears, digimon World 3, Classic GTA and ill be happy

jznrpg16h ago

Jeanne D’Arc was great!

@Eonjay there is a Grandia collection available for PS4, I’m not sure if it’s been on plus already or not

darthv7220h ago

cloud streaming to the portal, without using the ps5, is the selling point of premium to me.

Obscure_Observer20h ago

If the consumers are happy, Sony is even happier.

It is what it is.
