Sony Corporation just posted its financial results for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2014, related to the period between September 1st and December 31st.
6.4 million? Wow that's awesome
Almost twice as many home consoles in a quarter as Nintendo sold in an entire year. That's nuts. edit: @Below "HOME consoles". It's not a surprise that Nintendo is dominating the handheld market; they always have. But going from Wii's incredible dominance to a console that is getting outsold by the competition for the year within a half of a quarter is. And it's not like 3ds sold 44 million in a single quarter/year, so I'm not really sure why you're bringing that up.
well , compared to 3DS , 44 million sales worldwide .........
@Killerluffy123 44 million LIFETIME i.e. in 4 YEARS! Not in the last quarter! Furthermore, it is a $200 handheld, not a $400 fully featured home console. 3DS sales are actually down year on year so stop bragging about them before you embarrass yourself. Here is the link. http://www.reuters.com/arti...
@Griever don't forget the $99 2ds which is rolled into that number.....
@Griever I think its too late for Killerluffy123 to embarrass himself/herself. The 3DS, 2DS, and 3DSXL are all combined into one. but with that said, the handheld market is not competing with the home console market. Comparing them is pretty embarrassing.
Congratulations on Sony.. This is for the players. :)
bu bu bu bu butSony don't make profit. It is dying company.
It's Phenomenal ... Honestly, Sony have taken this gen and literally ran with it. Forget the "It's Early Days" rhetoric, it's pretty much done n' dusted. I totally expected a much tighter race, especially as the PS4 exclusives everyone wants didn't even show up 2013/2014. Look, I enjoy all of my consoles but, I have to call it how I see it ....all of Gen 8 belongs to Sony.
This is why I called the PS4 as the "PLAYSAVIOUR 4" since its reveal last February 20 2013. It is saving Sony and the video games industry as we know it and as we live and breathe. Considering Sony Corp higher ups despised the PlayStation in the early 90's. What a very nice story. Good job PlayStation management and specially the whole PlayStation Nation! @trolls razor and blades people razor and blades printer and ink cartridges look it up
You're absolutely right. If not for sony we'd be left with MS's DRM riddled xbone or Nintendo's wii u with great exclusives, but lack of 3rd party support thanks to weaker hardware. Sony literally saved console gaming as we know it.
I'm happy that playstation did well over the holidays. However sony needs a complete restructure of all other departments. Losing 1.4 billion this year is not acceptable. If this continues, playstation will suffer and no one wants that.
Stock market disagrees with you, up 3.00 just in first 30 mins of being open this morning. People dont invest like that when they are failing, they see the turnaround and want to get in early as possible. Last year stock was at 16.00 now its over 26.00
Read the finance release there very close: A: that so called "loss" for the Mobile section was a good will write down! 1st. TV recorded its 3rd straight Quarter's IE: 3 straight Quarters in a row each generated Profit, and the restructure is still not finished yet. 2 and. Even the mobile section generated Profit! 3rd finance and services generated Profit. 4th Playstation and entertainment generated Profit! Despite what many want to claim: about Sony on a downward death spiral its not even remotely true at all over all Sony is on for all divisions generating Profit. And with more cost cutting its only going to get better. Which is why Kaz and the board were still not deposed. They have, not if they can or they may. This is Have turned the company around. Top it off it exceeded the projections. Stock jumped by 3 whole points.
quality always sells
Quality and a good price, Sony is managing a to recover. This is good.
Not quite true. SONY televisions are very high quality and they do not sell well. They're too dam expensive is why. I wish I could afford Sony everything TBH, but price point seems to be just as important as quality when quantifying sales.
Absolutely amazing numbers! Glad to see the Vita still has lots of life in it! I'm breathing a sigh of relief. 3 million portables sold and I'm willing to bet that most of them were the Vita. Also 7.5 million consoles shows that Sony is the current king of the console market. That's no joke. They're on top of the world!
U do know that 3 million is terrible right ? it was released on the same year as 3DS , which had made 44 MILLION SALES WORLDWIDE . NO JOKE !!!!!
comparing a quarter of sales to the lifetime sales? Makes sense
Why are you comparing lifetime sales of 3DS (outdated ones at that; 3DS reached 50 million) to people's discussions of quarter/yearly sales?
What an idiot. NO JOKE !!!!!
Palm face kick......
It doesnt have to sell as much as 3DS for people to enjoy it. Funny every time I use it I dont think 'oh dam 3DS sell so many more...' guess what? I dont care There s room for other handhelds than 3DS thanks God.
Can I put a chair to his face??? I use my Vita every day. The Vita may not have the great sales numbers or popular games compared to the 3DS. But people who have them enjoys it. I stop using my 3DS because i'm tired of the games that are released on the 3DS. My wife is a hardcore Mario fan, this is what she thinks of the games that comes out for the 3DS, "Just the same old thing but different colors". Occasionally there will be one game that will make me pick up the 3DS, but other than that it sits in the cabinet.
These are QUARTERLY sales, dammit! Why do you keep comparing 4 YEARS of LIFETIME sales to quarterly sales of PS4 PS Vita!? Man, fanboys are so stupid!
So you say 3mil is terrible? Well lets see. 3 million vitas in 1 quarter vs 44 million 3ds in 4 years. 4 years = 16 quarters and 44 millin divided by 16 = 2.75 million per quarter average. Huh, thats funny, last I checked 3 was greater then 2.75, no joke.
Awesome sales congrats Sony.
I think its impressive too,the PS division is doing wonders for the company as a whole.Congrats and a job well done to Kaz and his team. offtopic - why the disagrees?did we say anything wrong? lmao.
We all get hit from friendly fire every now and then. Don't watch em giving kudos is a fairer trait and not many can handle giving it to the other team... *thumbs up* guys
@Why We're all gamers. So Sony's win is our win to.
I gathered you's two know that but the guys that disagree with ya dont.
Impressive PS4 sales numbers. Good job Sony!
Funny thing is that it's not until this month onward that Sony will truly start rolling with anticipated exclusives. If they did great mainly running with third party and a good marketing with there PS4 on its first year, this year the console will truly shine with all the exclusives and all the anticipated third party games that'll push sales even further ahead of the competition. It's great to see the industry succeed and actually shun all these so called experts mumbling about the mobile industry taking over.
Well @George Sears #7 While you are correct, in that the game console market is doing rather well, between all 3 main companies and add in all the off units of micro game consoles like the OUYA already in a 2nd run! Who would have thought..two models now! There is only Thing is the Mobile Market has Disrupted this part of the market, but really not in a bad way. This i think many Gamer's are over looking. See the main point is the chips we have in Mobile systems have in effect made Gaming so much an every day mass general computing Application that its not the niche market of only the game console anymore being the driver of new developments. Example: Rockstar Games for instance has now put GTA III, Vice city and San Andreas all on Android App store for smartphones and tablets or smart TV's to run! With a device that was mainly designed as a communication device 1st. But the chips is powerful enough to run a game like that. Combine with a bluetooth game pad, the game experience is exactly like the living room console one. This has opened up game developers to be able to make more money and more games without breaking the bank or the risk of a large loss in money if the game does not work out. Its expanded gaming in my opinion helped with making gaming more front and center than as seen as mainly a nich entertainment. It come's with both + and / - but i think the + benefits outweight the - aspects. Great post by the way
so... what was all that doom n' gloom crap about sony going bankrupt?
the other fanboy's wishful thinking...
^@bias, you're right, there are tonnes of fanboys saying it. You for example. And all of them are looking increasingly wrong by the day. :)
stuff like that makes me laugh because these fanboys dont realize if sony goes down, it wont help them at all unless you want DRM or nintendo only
^ Do you own stocks Mr. Financial Expert? Do you work at Sony to know what's going on? Sony is restructuring dear. Try to keep up with the current events. They're not disappearing anytime soon, no matter how many times you pass your 'opinion' as fact or mash the disagree button.
Bubs up for a intelligent comment. Restructuring is a key part of business. All major companies do it including Sony's main competitor in he gaming industry (in fact they just did within the last year and a half I believe to lump a few divisions that were always red with a couple that are consistently black to look good for shareholders). I'm also quite curious as to what they sold SOE and all those IP's for. I'm willing to bet it has about 9 zeroes after the initial number. That is also part of restructuring. Anyways, nice to see someone actually using business sense to talk about business topics.
Good to hear. it seems like they are getting the company back on the profitable track again. This is good news for gaming i think.
If I remember right, last quarter they were at 13.5 million shipped. Add 6.4 to that and that's 19.9 million PS4s shipped by the end of the year. They announced 18.5 million sold to consumers in early January. Two different figures covering the same timeframe. Goes to show that whole shipped vs sold difference actually is quite significant.
Makes sense now that its no longer impossible to find PS4s on store shelves. Those things are flying though.
also consider that AMD officially announced that xb and ps4 had shipped a combined 30million units by the end of the yeasr therefore 30m (total) - 19.9(ps4) = 10.1 (xbone) shipped 9-9.5 sold
Good that they are on track ! selling off SOE and their chip company must have really helped buff up the over all business. PS4 alone will not save Sony people. Next time you buy a TV dont buy a Samsung....
Sony's televisions aren't apart of their business anymore. They've spun it off into a separate company called Sony Visual Products.
"selling off SOE and their chip company must have really helped buff up the over all business" How do you suppose those things helped them in the Sept-Dec quarter? Did they send the money that they made on the sales back in time?
These numbers are from September to December you fool lol
The "selling off SOE and their chip company" are not related to the last quarter. We will see the impact of "selling off SOE and their chip company" when they release the results for the current quarter.... Geee... Are you 12? If not, people like you make me sick. What is your gain if Sony fails or what you win if MS posts huge profits. NOTHING !!! Do not forget that a lot of people work at Sony and they need to live too.
The only thing Sony needs saving from, is people like you who want them to fail for some twisted reason. As gamers, we should hope for them to get out of their situation and do well, not cling to every doom and gloom financial article.
Yeah I don't understand that. What sane person would want SONY to fail? SONY has been breaking ground and delivering state of the art electronics of the highest quality for 40 years. I think a lot of young-uns around here have no idea how instrumental SONY was to the electronic revolution. So many of the things we enjoy today were brought to us by SONY. From mobile music to Blu-Ray.
More money = more games/more PSN goodies. Hope to see more PS4 updates as well. Love this machine. Cant wait for all the awesome games coming out this year!
gotta do whatcha gotta do. keep it up!
I think these numbers will rise once the big games start coming out
every Sony home console ever has risen in the 2nd year then risen again in the 3rd year. Sony is on pace for over 60m by the end of 2016! That's a pessimistic estimation btw
Holiday 2015 is going to be massive for Sony imo. Prime time for price cuts, possible slim or new HD, Project Morpheus, and of course bundles (oh hi Uncharted 4!)
Awesome, glad to see Sony this successful. Can't wait until I get through my backlog and pick up a PS4!
Stop typin' and get playin'! ;^)
Getting my Playstation 4 today. With DriveClub, TLOU and LBP3 <3
I have all those games and you shouldn't be disappointed at all. Enjoy buddy! (Actually I haven't even started LBP3 yet. Soon tho, it's sitting on my shelf). Add me on PSN and Twitter if you want: SmielmaN
The only unprofitable division was Sony Pictures!? ...and that division is usually one of the biggest profit drivers for the company. I'm sure it would have been profitable this quarter too, if it wasn't for the NK hack. It will be back to making money when the fallout dies down (Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune alone make the division a crapload of money). Go Sony! Good job!!!
No, it was generating profit, just not as much as it would have, also they took a hit for the hack, so it was expected.
Sony's got nine lives , cat's eyes.
Sadly the PS division wont be enough to carry this company, sad to see sony drop from many major areas that made them the giant back in the day..Laptop,Phones,MP3 Devices,Buildings,Factories,An d SOE.
Did you read the article? Every division but Sony Pictures posted a profit for the quarter. Derp. SOE and phones NEVER made them money. In fact, none of those items on your list, except for maybe loosely "MP3 devices" (as in Walkman), were even close to what made Sony "giant back in the day". Buildings and factories??? lol
Exactly: And if you notice even Sony pictures did in fact etch out tiny profit, the hack was why it lost money, as for his claim of building's..local the ironic thing is Sony set up a Real estate firm year before last, and its for buying or selling..one building for instance Sony over a cool 1 billion, and than Sony right away moved into silicon VAL. For a new playstation Head Q's LOL....yeah thats such a bad thing selling off assets to make even more money and trim fat, and aquire more property, to do it again..its called making money.
They are bleeding money,no way around that fact if you think just bc they are making a little profit here and there is gonna keep them up,than fine that might work for the short term but long term they are in trouble..And if they think a 1k walkman is gonna save them than goodluck lol..There is a reason why Kaz have stated over and over that there will be far less 1st party AAA exclusives..They just dont have the money now to fully fund a multi million dollar game..But anyways im posting this on N4G were people think SONY is the greatest..Go ahead and disagree idc lol
@AutoCad They are no longer bleeding money, dude. The PC division was the artery that was gushing and it looked very bleak for the whole company, but that's in the past now. It's been a steady uphill climb and this year (2015) they should return to being fully PROFITABLE and growing in strength when all said they were doomed. And the MONUMENTAL success of the PS4 is the main driver of this turnaround. They are putting MORE resources into the PS division, not less. You're obviously a sad fanboy of some other system, so go ahead and dry your tears. My final bubble, so good day and thank you for your patronage.
Don't understand why it would be sad to see. This is part of how businesses remain intact in today's market. Sony was horrendously overextended in several business ventures that weren't bringing expected profits. EVERY company worth it's salt will do the same. Sure, what Sony did was a bit more drastic. But, given the choice between trimming the fat or going under, Sony chose what was best. Thus far, it seems to be working. Besides, being realistic, the MP3 market has been on lockdown by Apple and steadily shrinking with more powerful smartphones and their laptops were too pricey for what was being offered. It was a shrewd business move and it's starting to pay off. NO company can afford to live in the past. Sony just started to realize this recently.
