Head of Product Development Darrell Gallagher recently came out and revealed that Rise Of The Tomb Raider on the Xbox 360 will not be developed by Crystal Dynamics. Instead, Nixxes Software will handle development of the sequel for the last gen platform.

Transporter473361d ago

Not too shabby. I just wonder how long is the wait for me to play it on my PS4.

OpieWinston3361d ago

@Chris
You're doing a great job spreading the word. I'm so glad to finally start getting details for RoTR. Even if I probably wont be able to see any gameplay until June.

lelo2play3361d ago

Rise Of The Tomb Raider looks great.

Still don't have a X1 but maybe by the time Rise Of The Tomb Raider releases, I will have one. Really enjoyed the previous Tomb Raider.

ShellB3361d ago

That bear needs nvidias fur tech.

underwaves753361d ago

thanks for posting that. However I think unless the 360 version an entirely different game then it WILL be held back..

4Sh0w3361d ago (Edited 3361d ago )

Held back How?

According to this report CD are focused on only working on the X1 version to maxmimize its strengths and it will be up to another studio to do their best in making a port for 360:

“We’re wholly focused on Rise being an Xbox One title without limitation, without even thinking of the Xbox 360 version,” Gallagher told Game Informer in their Rise of the Tomb Raider-themed March issue.

Id love to hear you logical explanation of how 360 development will impact X1 when CD are making the game as if the 360 version doesnt exist?...they've handed off all responsibility to another studio.

It worked great with Forza Horizon 2 for X1 when dev was handed to another studio, of course it turned out to be a a highly rated next gen game, the 360 version was well done but clearly lacked alot of the X1 assets= X1 vesrion not held back.

Good to see that MS is still providing games for the 360. It is also good to see that their cross games are being handled by different developers. Very smart way of developing this way each dev can focus on each system respectively.

ABeastNamedTariq3361d ago

Isn't it Crystal Dynamics? Not MS per se... I see what you're saying though. Semantics.

jb2273361d ago

It's not really being handled by different devs though to my understanding. CD is developing the game but Nixxes is porting it to the 360. The title of this article makes it out like they are 2 separate processes when in actuality one feeds into another. It's not like people say that 343 developed Halo 2 just because they ported it to a different system.

Rimeskeem3361d ago

This is coming to PC, right?

lelo2play3361d ago (Edited 3361d ago )

Everybody knows it's timed exclusive to X1/X360, but nobody knows witch platforms it will get released later on.

Maybe only PC.
Maybe PC and PS3/PS4.
Maybe WiiU.
Maybe Android/iOS.

Take a guess...

My guess is that it will later get released on PC. Not sure about PS3/PS4. Microsoft must be pissed about the Street Fighter PC/PS4 deal Sony made, so remains to be seen if they do something about it.

NuggetsOfGod3361d ago (Edited 3361d ago )

As long as consoles don't hold back the power of tegra x2 next year it's all good.

X1 is a beast!

-Foxtrot3361d ago

The game isn't coming out until late this year...why waste your time making a 360 version, just focus on making the Xbox One version the best you can without being held back by last gen.

Seriously by now last gen consoles for big games like this shouldn't even be considered.

gangsta_red3361d ago (Edited 3361d ago )

A separate developer is focusing on the 360 as the article plainly states. So there's no waste of time and nothing is being held back.

MS is still providing 360 only users with games. Something a lot of people on this site said MS would never do.

OC_MurphysLaw3361d ago

and... @gangst_red gets it. ^^ = +bub for thinking things through.

underwaves753361d ago

the only way it will not be held back, is if it's an entirely different game...Just because someone else is focusing on older hardware won't change the core of the game mechanics.. You know what I mean?

AngelicIceDiamond3361d ago

This statement hit home.

"MS is still providing 360 only users with games. Something a lot of people on this site said MS would never do."

This...This right here couldn't be more true. People here truly, dearly believed MS would ax the 360 and not provide anymore games for the users.

TheJacksonRGN3361d ago

Did you even read the article? Crystal Dynamics is focusing on the Xbox One version only.

"We’re wholly focused on Rise being an Xbox One title without limitation, without even thinking of the Xbox 360 version"

Genuine-User3361d ago

I'm really glad to hear that.

-Foxtrot3361d ago

@TheJacksonRGN

But you are still wasting money on getting a team to do the 360 version, imagine how much more they could put into the Xbox One version. The team could be bigger, which means more work will get done so it would end up being bigger, better and more polished then it would be with fewer people.

KarmaV123361d ago

But if they didn't make a 360 version, people would hate them for not making one. MS cannot catch a break I guess.

468893373361d ago (Edited 3361d ago )

By your logic they shouldn't get any teams to port the game to PC or PS4 because they'd be "wasting money". Do you even hear yourself talk? This is some of the dumbest shit I've read all week.

Dudebro903361d ago

How are they wasting money...people will buy it on 360 as well. They aren't wasting a dime.

A larger team does not = better quality. Look t Assassins creed unity. That game had a MASSIVE team.

lemoncake3361d ago

They will easily make enougth money from the version to cover the cost, xbox 360 has a huge user base. Great to see the xbox 360 getting this level of support, last year forza and this year tombraider, unlike Sony who didn't give the PS3 driveclub or the upcoming uncharted. Is that why you are posting these negative comments about giving up support for last gen? You just Super salty.

RosweeSon3361d ago

A game releasing 2 years after the latest gen of consoles has launched should be a fully next gen title, it's alright for 6 months to a year to do an EA and release on every platform under the sun but when it's a big game like this (I personally thought the first Tomb raider was amazing, nothing like tomb raiders of old sure but great game all the same) as for it being split across 2 generations, bad idea seperate developer or not this game should be next gem focussed by the time it comes out it'll be two years down the line, microsoft just don't wanna give up that xbox 360 but without at least showing signs of putting it to an end or retirement home, xbox one will continue to struggle as 360 has a massive and fantastic range of games ( I did have one for 9 years and still do it's just boxed up) it won't be coming back out anytime soon and until xbox one starts going full steam ahead then I'll just make do with my 360 even if it's not even plugged in. People don't just want a revised console they want a revolutionary console and xbox one has still got a long way to go. Those big updates have dried up now they don't have any more ideas to steal. E3 should be interesting but if Sony and Nintendo do more than games than they have already shown at ps experience and through Nintendo directs microsoft better have a ton of games as that's what that system needs most, Games, Next Generation AAA games sure Sony has had a year of indies but this next 12 months is gonna be large the next month/2 alone is gonna be pretty big, fun times ahead depending where your gaming.

_-EDMIX-_3361d ago

Ummm bud, 360 has 80 million units, XONE has like 10 mill

Soooo chances are, it will sell better on 360. Sorry but $60 on 360 with MORE units sold makes more sense then $60 ONLY on XONE with less units sold.

Annnnnd buddy, they can do both. So this idea of "bigger" or "more" polished etc makes not sense. Its not a either or thing, its a both thing.

2 different teams buddy...

next time actually read the article or at least know something about game development before posting such a thing..

AngelicIceDiamond3361d ago (Edited 3361d ago )

@Edmix

"Ummm bud, 360 has 80 million units, XONE has like 10 mill

Soooo chances are, it will sell better on 360."

Everyone said the same thing before Titanfall released and X1 had a way smaller fanbase than it does now.

And TF pushed more console and software sales on X1.

Even Horizon 2 sold more X1.

Why would this game be any different?

spicelicka3360d ago (Edited 3360d ago )

But it's not a first party studio, i don't think it works like that. MS is not going to put extra money on the staff of a third party studio. CD manages their own staff and resources, all MS is doing is paying them for a timed exclusivity deal as far as I know. Paying them extra would not mean they'll hire more people and make the game even better, and even if they did there's no guarantee that it will have an impact on sales, they will never blow off money like that.

Investing money on an xbox 360 version however, is an independent investment. It won't cost much to do a 360 port, and the money will be made back from the sales because there is still a large 360 audience. Think of it like 2 different games.

@Fox

"But you are still wasting money on getting a team to do the 360 version, imagine how much more they could put into the Xbox One version."

Fox...seriously...what are you even talking about? You truly believe that the budget of the 360's version of the game will effect the Xbox One's version?

And specifically how much MORE are you expecting for the Xbox Version? Do you have another game you can gauge this "more" by?

"The team could be bigger, which means more work will get done so it would end up being bigger, better and more polished then it would be with fewer people."

Wow, I never facepalmed so hard in my life.

There is so much that is wrong with that statement(s) that it defies logic. Because we all know that bigger teams always equal to better and more polished games right?

Just say you didn't read the part of a separate developer making the 360 game, instead of coming up with those excuses.

OC_MurphysLaw3361d ago

Forza Horizon 2 is a prime example of how this kind of strategy can work and not impact the Xbox One version.

BattleAxe3361d ago

There is still a healthy market on the 360, and Microsoft has recently said that they have long term plans for the 360, which is fantastic. Hoping that a company drops support for their product is just plain stupid.

RosweeSon3361d ago

What when the console is best part 10 years old and the lastest model has been on market for over a year?! People gotta move on at some point change is good hence why I jumped ship from being a mainly 360 gamer (9 years) to now PS3/4, Vita, Wii U and 3DS, got no time for the samey samey xbox one, Forza, dead rising, call of duty, halo, FIFA, assassins creed... Console of the yearly churns, I've gone next gen not backwards with my ps4 and if I still want games from current gen it'll be wii U by far as its gotta better games than xbox one is offering so what's it's been around for a year extra apart from tomb raider there schedule on xbox one looks bleak compared to both Nintendo and Sony. Not only that the price won't stick on that xbox one it'll be down again by the summer, E3 price cut at a guess, disagree all you want you know alongside a slim xbox one or new colours it's about 90% likely to happen unless they have actually got some games to show, gears of war yay! Epic did the right thing, got out.

JasonKCK3361d ago

80 million 360's out there and many of those people including me haven't gone next gen yet. I invested in PC first this round.

underwaves753361d ago

It's a bad decision to put the new TR on the 360 at all.... It's supposed to compete with Uncharted 4!? Good luck having it totally held back by the old system...... So bad

starchild3361d ago

Two totally different development teams are making each version, so there is no reason it would have to be held back.

Any of the new games this generation could have had last gen versions. It's just a matter of paring things back or omitting some things to get it working on the older hardware. Even games like Infamous Second Son, Ryse or Killzone Shadow Fall could have had last gen versions if the devs/publishers had really wanted to.

As long as the main team is focused completely on taking advantage of the more powerful platform and the other dev team focuses on figuring out what to pare back and what can be "faked" by a more efficient method there is no reason that such games can't be graphically impressive.

ironfist923361d ago

It doesnt work like that. If some aspect of the current gen version isnt compatible when applied to the older gen, theyre going to have to gimp it in order for parity between the two versions.

Old gen does hold back aspects of current gen games, regardless of different developers.

starchild3360d ago

Not really. There isn't a single game so far this generation that has some cutting edge visual or gameplay element that is critical to the game and couldn't be pared back to work on previous gen consoles.

All the games I mentioned have very advanced graphics, but they could still be made to work on last gen hardware. Obviously some effects would be missing and the overall graphics wouldn't look as nice, but the basic gameplay and world would translate just fine.

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness458d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch458d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730458d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior458d ago (Edited 458d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot460d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto458d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior460d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B458d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws458d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730458d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69458d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

They're all solid games, but nothing quite matched the epicness of the first one for me. I think the 3rd one started off strong but once you got to that Peruvian area it took a massive nose dive for me.

lelo2play839d ago (Edited 839d ago )

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

LiViNgLeGaCY839d ago

I think he means the first one in the new trilogy.

CrimsonWing69839d ago

I meant the first of the new trilogy.

Furesis839d ago

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it. So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol

ANIALATOR136838d ago

I was the same for some reason. Never finished the second one. I got like half way through maybe.
