Dying Light: horrifying for all the wrong reasons?

Vic B'Stard writes "I love zombies. There’s something about them that has been scaring the pants of me since I first accidentally watched Zombie Flesh Eaters aged eleven.

Recently I’ve started be bothered by zombies for an entirely different reason, namely Techland’s Dying Light.

I first played Dying Light at Sydney’s EB Expo back in 2013. Being mindful that this was a few months before the release of the Xbox One, so I’d yet to really see what the “next-gen” was capable of. Dying Light looked good, even in this alpha stage."

Looks plenty good to me.

We'll see how it pans out tomorrow.

Watching streams makes me feel like all the climbing makes the game easier than it should be. It looks too easy to escape the zombies, especially the grappling hook thing that lets you zip up to a roof in two seconds.

It is easy to escape, that's the whole point because the confrontation before the escape is hard. It's not like Dead Island where you rip through hordes. From every gameplay video I saw, the zombies looked hard to kill and they swarm pretty fast. It took about 4-6 hits to the head to kill one zombie and don't get me started at night cause that shit made me nervous and I wasnt even playing. Looks really tense. All in all, it seems to be a really polished well made Dead Island with parkour

"All in all, it seems to be a really polished well made Dead Island with park our"

That's pretty much my impression, which makes me hesitate to buy it. Dead Island was hands down the buggiest game I've ever played in my life.

I think Dying Light will be fine. I'm just expecting some fun co-op action. I own a PS4 and a Xbox One, and to be honest with you I haven't really seen anything that wowed me, as the article described. Most games that have released were available on last gen consoles as well, so we haven't really seen anything that couldn't be done on older far less capable consoles. Sure the graphics are better, but nothing else. The first year and a half it's to be expected though. Given Techlands past titles I expect a healthy dose of bugs and glitches(nothing game breaking like AC:U though).
After watching numerous streams on twitch and listening to feedback from the streamers themselves I'm actually more impressed than before. Not all zombie games are the same. It doesn't need hundreds of zombies on screen like DR3 or an emotionally charged plot like TLOU. As long as it's fun to hop on and play with 3 other friends for hours just mindlessly slaying zombies Then what more can you ask for?

Sometimes just gameplay isn't enough. I wish more games had stories like TLOU. Breaks the norm and creates a new generation of great games.

It's more dangerous at night , so there's that too.

They mostly come out at night. Mostly.

When will this game be getting reviewed (panned)?

snookiegamer1386d ago (Edited 1386d ago )

Another (semi) negative article about another unreleased game...

Whatever happened to trying out a (finished) game before criticism?

At least wait for the majority of Reviews?? Don't just beat up on an aspect of a game just to attract views ;/

"Whatever happened to trying out a (finished) game before criticism? "

Erm, this happened literally all the time before the Aliens: Colonial Marines fiasco. Previewers hyped up games and didn't even mention potential problems until the games released. It was a huge deal and it wasn't all that long ago!

And it was a bad thing. Loads of people got burned by buying into gushingly positive press that didn't attempt to call out negative aspects.

Surely it's good that writers are calling it how they see it? Some positive, some negative, and we can read both viewpoints to get a balanced idea of what to expect. Just my 2c.

VicBStard1386d ago

To be honest, I'd hoping that the game is good. I'm a big fan of Techland, but from what I've played of this game (and it was only four months ago when I last gave it a go), it doesn't seem to be quite that game that I was hoping for.

STK0261386d ago

I'm happy we're seeing some negative previews nowadays (not necessarily about Dying Light, can be about any game). I remember a time when all we got were overly positive previews, and yet the games would be panned by critics the minute it launched. It sent contradicting messages, and you could see some of the bigger gaming sites were just hyping up games they knew were going to be bad, just to make a buck.

I'm not saying previews should be gloomy and overly negative, but I think they should be honest. If whoever wrote this preview really doesn't think the game will end up being very good from what he/she has played and seen, I think it's okay to publish this preview.
