Anything goes: How Destiny just went Free-to-Cheat

"Bungie's Shared-World Shooter went live on the 9th of September last year.
It was a commercial success and a critical failure. Nothing exciting really.
The only thing almost all critics agreed upon was the concept of the endgame content, the so called Raid. It was a completely fresh experience in the beginning and some critics went even so far to claim that –while Destiny was a disappointment as a whole, the Raid alone was worce the price tag if you had enough friends on your list to organize it."

A 75 is a critical failure?

Wow. Just wow. We know you journos just love to hate this game.

I love how irate you get that people are playing it and loving it. I would enjoy your ire regardless if I played the game or not. Your integrity is still in the sewers and now you have an article to prove that you are still nothing but hacks.

Yay for you!

wannabe gamer3384d ago

now days anything but a 90 and up is treated like a ho hum experience and anything below 80 people act like its just not worth playing. i get tired of reading reviews on release day and people act like if it isnt perfect then its a fail.

Link2DaFutcha3384d ago

Agreed, I got it day one and have been loving it. It's amazing if you have a good crew of people and the flaws of the game (I.E. Dinklebot's mindless droning "something something, darkness, something the traveler"). The gameplay is fantastic and figuring out ways to beat the hardest parts, be it a special spot where it's harder to die, are great.

But hey, haters gonna hate.

joab7773384d ago

I absolutely loved this games concept, it's environment, and it's 2nd to none fps combat. I love fps games, but give and mmo's. I didn't care about a story b/c they become archaic quite rapidly in mmo's anyway. I adored the content and especially the first raid.

Then I realized that skirting the mmo line doesn't work. Either create a game that requires a commitment or do not.

Then came the cheesing. And it ruined everything for good. I put in more time and work than anyone in my group, but everything devolved into trying to cheat.

Here's the problem. When it can be done, it will be. It's like the history teacher that teaches socialism to his class. First test, everyone gets a 90, the average score. A couple are pissed b/c they worked so hard for their 100's. Most are excited b/c they would never had got that score. Next test, about an 80%. By the end of the semester, everyone failed b/c everyone gave up. What was the point?

Death3384d ago

First off, I have no idea what the author is talking about. According to the hotfix, Bungie removed more cheesing with the update. How anyone sees this fix as an ok to cheat is beyond me.

When you cheese the boss, you cheat yourself. I'm ok with running around mobs. There is almost more challenge to running through a horde of badies than there is killing them. It's almost a game within the game when your racing your friends and laughing when they die. Once you hit the level cap, grinding through enemies is kind of redundant anyway. Going back to when you cheese a boss, the group I play with liked knocking the Templar of the ledge. Now that we are doing it legit, it turns out our team kind of sucks and we are struggling to play the way Bungie designed it.

GameSpawn3384d ago (Edited 3384d ago )

It's the old saying "Give 'em an inch, they'll take a mile."

I think Bungie is done trying to "lay down the ban hammer" and punish those who exploit the game anymore. With every patch and DLC release, there is a team of idiots that find every single possible way to "cheese" and exploit the game because "RNG has pissed them off".

Here is the problem, the more this behavior continues the less reason Bungie has to fix the RNG, because in Bungie's eyes you are just going to exploit the game anyways for your not so hard earned rewards.

They fixed the loot caves and they fixed the Atheon cliff exploit. The Crota "freeze" is most likely going to get patched soon too, but Bungie has not done anything to punish people performing these exploits besides not working out a compromise to the RNG reward system (which is not great but is the sole motivator to the behavior we are seeing).

I'm disappointed to see people play the raids this way just to get as much raid loot as possible as well as seeing people create duplicate Hunters, Titans and Warlocks on their second and third accounts just to play the Dailies, Weeklies, and Raids multiple times, mule up the loot and transfer it to their primary and then turn around and complain about constantly getting loot for a class they were not playing. HELLO?!!! Idiots, Bungie gave you a three character limit because they intended for you to create one of each class to (1) fully experience each class and its pros and cons and (2) in the situation were the RNG system gives you loot for another class you can use the Vault to transfer the loot to one of your other characters.

Bungie should put a hold on account creation when you delete a character so you have to wait 1-2 days before you can reuse a character slot (maybe only lock them in/punish them once the character makes it past level 5). This will cut down on Weekly/Daily cheesers using mules to bolster their main account and force them to actually play the game legitimately.

jdiggitty3384d ago

And they should make everything you find attached to that specific character. That would get rid of the vault space problem. If I can't give my Titan the mythoclast my Hunter has why even have a vault, right? And since I can't trade armor that isn't my current class I'd have to break it down anyway.

Or maybe make it so that only one character can do the raid/strike/daily list per week and if you've already done a strike it will lock you out till you've done the others. Or you can only choose to use one character per week and get the option to choose another at the reset.

Cause with me having run the VoG 30+ times and still not getting the armor I need, these changes, along with what you suggest will really keep me going, right? /s

GameSpawn3384d ago (Edited 3384d ago )

You can trade armor and weapons because I accidentally bought an Exotic Chest-piece for a Titan using my Warlock (this was before they fixed the Vendors and added a long press to buy from Xur) and just traded over through the Vault - no issues, I have it equipped on my Titan now. You just cannot trade with other people, just between YOUR characters.

I think they should allow multiple playthroughs of the Daily and Weekly Strikes and Heroic missions, but just not give rewards beyond materials (similar to how the story missions have "first play" rewards that you can only get once). This would give a good farm for experience and Legendary material while not undermining Armor and weapon rewards or Strange Coins.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter326d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell325d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig326d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast325d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g325d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka325d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai476d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface475d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard473d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
