Resident Evil 4 Had Everything Gamers Hate, Yet We Still Love It

"ZL: Arguably, the game does deviate away from certain horror elements, and a case could be made that more accurate shooting certainly dilutes the horror experience. What’s interesting about this particular installment in the series is that it was largely responsible for many unpopular trends seen over the next 10 years of game design–particularly when it comes to the third-person shooter genre–as well as containing many pitfalls of many poorly-received titles."

QTE were loved back then because it was really epic, the laser sequence or Krauser entrance made you feel like a total badass or in God Of War 2 in literally every single boss fight which was extremely epic. I think why the people hate it because of Resident Evil 6, the amount of QTE was ridiculous and tough and the counters required a professional to pull it off. I still love and welcome QTE if its used right especially in a tense moment.

Resident Evil 7 can be scary and tense again if they did the atmosphere right and less to zero action moments. And more creative and scary enemies.

gantarat3545d ago

QTEs is not only problem RE 6

nucky643545d ago

RE4 was ok....but I liked RE1/2 and code veronica a LOT better.

SpiralTear3545d ago

Even though most of these things people hated, I think it's because RE4 did them so much better than its contemporaries that it was received so well.

Kevlar0093545d ago

There was either a reason for it to be in, it was novel at the time, or it was minimized to where it wasn't painful.

3rd person meant you could only see about 50% of your surroundings, so it added some tension to offset the more action focus. 3rd person also brought tactical shot placement: Hit someone in the head get either a crit or stun them to get a sweeping kick in, shoot in the arm to drop their weapon, hit in leg to set up a kick/suplex (suplex had a 50% to insta-kill)

QTE's were fairly minimal, and made cut scene's engaging. You could interact with your environment and made specific custscenes (like the Krauser knife fight) memorable. Even with Ashley you could have her hide in places to avoid most damage, or sit in a corner while you protect her. It took several hours to get her and even then 50% she wasn't in the game. You played her once, which incidentally had one of the scarier horror moments.

Resident Evil 4 had the luxury of being the prototype. These features weren't added to be cool or to fit a popular trend, they were added to make a new, unique experience unlike we have seen before. Even if you don't consider it to be the first, you can't deny they were implemented with serious consideration.

Feralkitsune3545d ago

It's always been 3rd person. 4 was just over the shoulder.

RG_Dubz3545d ago

RE4 was the beginning of a lot of bad RE games..

RE 1, 2, 3 & Code Veronica were great though.

Transporter473545d ago

RE4 kept it survival horror. RE5 and above went action based.

nowitzki20043545d ago

As a huge fan of the original Resident Evil's, RE5 was a sad time. RE4 was still great.

ShaunCameron3544d ago

@ nowitzki2004

RE5 was a sad time for die-hard RE and survival-horror fans, but a happy time for Capcom as it went on to become the highest-selling game in not just the RE franchise but in the company's history.

nowitzki20043544d ago

@ShaunCameron

It appealed more to any gamer rather than just a few of us. I know people who never played the older ones but love 5 because of Co-op. I hate Co-op for RE because it ruins the traditional RE experience. The only way I could see Co-op in RE working is if the people are still split up in different areas trying to achieve the same goal.

I cant wait til the RE remaster comes out Jan 20th

Roccetarius3545d ago

Indeed, RE4 was the beginning of the downfall for Resident Evil. This prototype video looked more promising than the final product.

gantarat3545d ago

action in horror theme (i,think)

nowitzki20043544d ago

The main thing I hated was that it wasnt Zombies. When I think Resident Evil, I think of ZOMBIES!

BosSSyndrome3545d ago

QTE can be cool if not overdone, and RE4 was FAR from the first game to have enemies with specific weak spots, although im not sure how thats such a bad thing anyway. Nor was it an escort mission in the same sense as other games. Ashley functions as a character and can perform actions, and the game is designed around her being with you, as opposed to the game just throwing in a target to defend without changing how the game is played at all.

Resident Evil 4 (PS2) Retro Review – The Evolution Of Survival Horror

Matt Evans said: Resident Evil 4 marked a significant departure from the traditional survival horror gameplay of the previous entries in the series. With a fresh perspective (both story-wise and camera-wise), it revitalised the franchise and became one of the most influential games of its generation, and arguably still the best in the series. The PlayStation 2 version, released in October 2005.

This hints at continued support for the VR versions of Resident Evil.

Nerdmaster81d ago

And Capcom, being Capcom, chooses to keep the VR versions limited to certain headsets in a niche that is already small.

Babadook781d ago (Edited 81d ago )

They wouldn’t work well on Quest. Not the PlayStation versions at least. Also Sony seems to have helped fund these.

StoriedGamer81d ago

... Maybe not quest standalone due to power limitations, but you do know that all of the modern resident evil games including 2 and 3 remake (which dont have even have official VR versions) are available on PC and are arguably better in almost every way...

The porting process to VR with VR capable engines is so incredibly easy that the cost is negligible really. What's worse is having played the games on psvr and psvr2, the developers did a pretty shoddy job whereas the PC versions are better as the community tackled a lot of the issues in a matter of a few weeks...

Babadook781d ago (Edited 81d ago )

@above.

This is simply not true. Compare RE8 praydog vs the native port to psvr2. The native port is an amazing experience. You’d never want to actually play the pc mod. It’s no where near as good. The performance is not good and is nauseating.

StoriedGamer81d ago

... In what ways is it nowhere near as good? On a decent system it runs incredibly well and even better if you have something good, pushing it way beyond what you get on the psvr2. I've literally played both, and on PC it not only looks better, but runs much better overall on pc. Additionally, you get even more games than the 3 official games over both psvr and psvr2 offered by Capcom (4, 7 which is only psvr compatible, and 8).

Babadook780d ago (Edited 80d ago )

@above

It doesn't actually run better on the PC though. I've heard from many PC gamers who will flat out disagree with you. I've seen top end Nvidia cards drop to below 60 fps (no reprojection either). Hopefully you know the effect that Foveated Rendering has on VR performance.

How far did you make it in the story? If you really claim that the PC can compete on performance show me a professional reviewer who claims that who actually tested a large portion of the game. On top of the performance not being in PCs favour you've got a completely inferior level of interactivity.

Pretty sure it's because they were very well paid to do so in the past I'm sure there's a deal going because Sony sure isn't in a rush to produce games for their own headset
Plus the re games are fantastic in VR

talocaca81d ago

RE4 is absolutely stellar on PSVR2.

Hoping their next title supports it too 👏👏👏

Babadook781d ago (Edited 81d ago )

Indeed. One of the guys seemed to be a big fan of VR.

And this bit pretty confirms there're plans for more RE VR projects.

Once they wrapped up the project, they realized VR was well-suited to the franchise. While they didn’t discuss specifics, Kumazawa says they “plan to undertake more challenges in the future.”

Profchaos81d ago

Was amazing I thought re8 was also just as good to.

SmortBoie81d ago

I'd give my left nipple for an official RE2R VR mode. Praydogs was good but the real deal would be incredible.
Shame they don't seem to have any interest going back to these releases. RE7VR even already exists just tweak it and pop it on PSVR2. Nnngggg.

sammichosaurus79d ago

Gotta get some VR experience soon.
