I haven't been following these things too closely, but I read a rumor that they might stop making the statues and instead making character cards? Is that true?

I also keep reading about these things getting discontinued. If so, these Amiibo statues are going to be HUGE collector's items, i would have to think.

Or am I just way off base? Like I said, I haven't been following these things too closely so I apologize if I'm way wrong.

Either way, it sucks. I was thinking about buying the Link, Samus, Megaman, and Starfox ones just because they look cool

Metallox3403d ago

Doesn't make much sense to keep producing figures that aren't in high demand, so cards are a great alternative; Nintendo commented about it, but nothing's confirmed.

Again, some amiibos, depending of what demand says, could get discontinued; some figures such as those ones of Marth, the Villager, Shulk and Lucario have sealed their destiny because either they aren't purchased in great numbers or they are retail exclusive. Nintendo expects that only the figures of popular characters will continue to be produced throughout the line of toys' life cycle, such as Mario, Pikachu, Link and Kirby.

That being said, I'm surprised that the Samus figure could get discontinued in even just one retailer, it's supposed to be one of the most popular.

RosweeSon3403d ago

And also one of the best made she looks super cool does Samus but then Kirby ain't half bad either, as for Mc Cloud.. Fox Mc Cloud suprised he's getting discontinued with a new game supposedly on its way within the year.

admiralvic3403d ago

"That being said, I'm surprised that the Samus figure could get discontinued in even just one retailer, it's supposed to be one of the most popular."

Out of curiosity, have you seen the Target amiibo display/area? If not, this is about how it looks at every Target I've been to and seen people display pictures of ( http://i.imgur.com/juFNa7x.... ).

Now, if you can't already tell, but the display section is REALLY small and there are about 15 pegs. Each peg can hold about three figures, so thats only 45 or so on display. It really doesn't make sense for Target to keep a lot of mainstays like Pikachu, Link, Peach, Mario and Luigi (already filling 1/3 of the spaces), plus less popular characters like Fox, Samus, Zelda, etc, on top of having more of these figures over time.

LightDiego3403d ago

I never heard about that but i don't see this becoming true, Amiibos are a huge success for Nintendo.

admiralvic3403d ago

"but I read a rumor that they might stop making the statues and instead making character cards? Is that true? "

I've heard people remark that they're also making cards or something like that in addition to the figures. I can't say I am really following it, since I don't get a lot of the amiibo hype. As of now the figures don't do much, so I don't really have any reason to track them down.

"I also keep reading about these things getting discontinued. If so, these Amiibo statues are going to be HUGE collector's items, i would have to think."

There needs to be demand and demand is not infinite. Case in point, Pokemon NFC figures. When Pokemon Rumble U came out we got some of the NFC figures and two were exclusive to preorders. These figures were selling for $40+ (the preorder ones anyway), but now a days they're worth like $10. It's hard to say how long the hype for amiibo will last and if they even want it right now.

A lot of what we seem to be seeing is speculative buyers. Reading comments on forums, it seems a lot of people have ordered multiples to ensure they don't get screwed, go around trying to find them all in person, many resellers are trying to find the next one that is worth a fortune and so forth. When all the dust clears and people stop buying eight so they 100% get one and such we will get a clear picture of what is going on.

"Either way, it sucks. I was thinking about buying the Link, Samus, Megaman, and Starfox ones just because they look cool"

Link is absurdly easy to find and will always be around. He is the highest selling amiibo and too much of a staple character not to keep around forever. Samus really isn't hard to find, I saw like 30 at Toys R Us, so simply going to another store might help. Fox is less common, but I think a lot of people speculate he might be the next "rare thing" and are buying him in bulk to prevent problems / make more later. Megaman will most likely be short lived because he is third party, but odds are he won't be desired either. Logically Sonic / Megaman won't have a lot of uses outside of Smash and their respective games (I doubt Capcom is going to do a lot with Megaman on the Wii U and Sonic games have been terrible for so long that I can't imagine you would care if they had support or not).

CorndogBurglar3403d ago

Yeah, but you have to think down the road. There may not be demanding now, but collectors will want them as they become more rare.

Hell, some of the worst NES and Atari games are now huge collectors items even though they were terrible games back in the day and no one wanted them.

xX1NORM1Xx3402d ago

No Nintendo said in a share holder call thing that due to the success of amiibo they are developing some smaller cheaper versions and some cards there will be 3 amiibo products to cater to 3 different price ranges a normal amiibo is £10 so I assume the smaller ones will be £5 then the cards £3 (if they are anything like Pokemon cards)

CallumC_3402d ago

Personally I don't think Nintendo will stop producing the Amiibos just yet. With how well the Disney Infinity figures are doing, it would be a dumb move to stop producing them. They do, however, need to figure out what the hell they're going to do with them. Having Amiibos as NPC fighters on SSB was a bad move. Cards are an option--not a good one--but they're definitely cheaper to produce and remember, Nintendo were originally a playing card company!

Huh. Suddenly my Samus Amiibo seems more valuable. Too had I opened it.

DivineAssault 3402d ago

its funny how they discontinue them before a game that uses em (besides smash bros) is released.. Im sure a variant may be released but still.. Thats really lame

Target Confirms PS5 Consoles Will Drop to Just $450 This Weekend

PlayStation 5 consoles will once again drop to just $449.99 on August 6 in the US.

fr0sty264d ago

Sony's going for the jugular.

crazyCoconuts264d ago

Strike hardest when the enemy is weak

darthv72264d ago

the price drop should be $100 (at least) for that... haha

fr0sty264d ago

@darth the sales numbers in the UK, where this price cut has already been implemented, strongly disagree with you.

seanpitt23264d ago

Have you guys heard yourself!

darthv72264d ago

sorry frosty... I thought this was in the US.

InUrFoxHole263d ago

No. They are going for off loading before the slim. I'd save my $ till then. Unless that kinda thing doesn't matter to you.

anast264d ago

They going to bury Xbox. Xbox will turn around and justify the mobile/streaming shift.

fr0sty264d ago (Edited 264d ago )

They already are burying Xbox... this is just another nail in that coffin. Sony put the hammer away and busted out the nail gun.

purple101264d ago

Its airline too .not even battery powered. They are going full Bosch on M$ ass

fr0sty263d ago

Like "oh, you wanna buy up a bunch of publishers with the expressed intent of putting us out of business? Hey y'all, watch this! Hold my Dual Sense..."

neutralgamer1992263d ago

i believe they want as many gamers to buy PS5 as possible because once someone buys into the ecysystem they are a lot less likely to leave for another platform

Eonjay264d ago

Will be interesting to see if Amazon takes the bait.

jznrpg263d ago

They usually match other places so I wouldn’t be surprised

ChasterMies264d ago

This is how Sony goes for the jugular. Microsoft can’t afford to make games exclusive if it doesn’t have any marketshare. Also clear that the discless PS5 will be the single PS5 going forward and the disc drive will be an add-on. When the $300 PS5 slim launches, the hot sales of PS5 will go super nova. (Don’t feel like you need to wait. On an annual cost basis, you may be better off getting a $400-$450 PS5 that you can use now versus waiting for a console that will be obsolete sooner.)

Ryuk_2007264d ago

"Microsoft can’t afford to make games exclusive if it doesn’t have any marketshare".

Sheesh, and here I thought M$ had a monopoly on the gaming market. Sony owing most of the market means it'll be easier for M$ to buy publishers to compete lol

InUrFoxHole263d ago

Stand by my boy. Digging up this goal post. Pardon while I write my new narrative.

EasilyTheBest263d ago

Looking forward to when Microsoft drops the price of the Xbox Series X & the comments will be that Microsoft are desperate lolol

Magatsuhi264d ago

I'll just wait for a sale on Best Buy or Amazon. F target!
