5pb. Visual Novel Could Signal Major Xbox One Push in Japan

Hardcore Gamer: Having another one of Asada’s projects come to their console exclusively would be in line with a more aggressive approach to capturing a segment of the Japanese/Otaku audience, especially after all the management shakeups that came in the wake of that dismal launch.

You know it's funny because these games might not seem relevant for mainstream gamers, but there is a very small, but incredibly passionate faction of gamers that have been freaking out about these games in America, and his following is huge in Japan.

It could honestly convince a ton of people to get an Xbox One as a secondary console.

You say there's a SMALL group of passionate people who love games of this type and then you say it could convince a TON of people to buy a Xbox just to play it. It might be able to make a ton of the very small group of people who already like these games to buy a Xbox, but it certainly won't be a ton of people. This game won't be a system seller and probably won't do much for the overall sales for the Xbox, but it is good news for the ones who enjoy these types of experience.

ValKilmer3405d ago

When I said "ton" I was referring to the fanbase of this developer and genre in Japan. It wouldn't make a splash in console sales in the US (although it would give it a lot of vocal fans online) but certainly could in Japan.

Conversely, there are probably a lot of Japanese gamers who miss out on these because they only have a PC and don't intend to buy an Xbox. It is entirely the developers choice which platform he decides to support of course, but it is the fans on other platforms (PC, phone and handheld) that miss out because of the exclusivity, and that means lost sales.

I dunno, if Tales of Vesperia, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Lost Planet, Tenchu weren't enough to kickstart the Xbox in Japan, I can't see a few visual novels making much of a dent.

DonFreezer3404d ago

Can I ask something? The games that you mentioned are all quality jrpgs that could have boost the 360 back at it's age in Japan. Why do you think they didn't kickstart the One? Are they bad games or something or whatever Microsoft does in Japan people will believe in Sony and their fud since they're home based?

Pretty niche yeah, but there are other options on systems that actually have a ton of Otaku content to choose from, so don't see a meaningful number of people dropping an extra $400 to play a Otaku based game or three.

I used to be what cold be considered an Otaku(I kind of don't follow much of that anymore in actual anime but like the games), but now I'm just someone who does still like that stuff. From all the people I knew, myself included, and discussing this stuff in forums, I can't think of a single instance where people would say they wanted a console because of one Otaku based game. It was always more about which console had the most Otaku type games, and for about 20 years now that has always been PlayStation consoles/handhelds, or Nintendo handhelds.

Besides, there was that article last week where that one visual novel didn't even chart in Japan, which wasn't typical for the series.

I thought Otaku was supposed to be an offensive term? Or am I mistaken?

Chaos Ring released recently exclusive for xbox one in Japan and it was a total failure, sales were horrible.

I don't know exactly what part of "Japan doesn't like xbox" the media don't understand and why they keep believing some miracle will change everything and suddenly x1 will be successful on Japan.

rainslacker3404d ago

Pokemon or maybe Final Fantasy exclusivity would probably do something for MS.

GokuSolosAll3404d ago

I'd consider an XB1 if it had enough exclusive VNs, RPGs, and TCGs. I just hope it doesn't so I can be satisfied with Sony and save money. Is that greedy? LOL.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. Especially now since Japan has become a handheld/mobile centric market.
