PS4 vs Xbox One – 2014 console wars are coming to an end

LTG writes:"2014 has been a great year for gaming despite all the controversies, scandals, and massive amount of broken titles at launched. Console gaming in particular was incredibly popular this year, with both the Xbox One and PS4 selling many more units and titles than the last generation. This seems a bit strange considering that we haven’t had a big number of exclusives on either console, although this is expected to change in a big way next year. For now though, let’s take a look at the current situation and see which of the consoles is the most popular at the moment. While the Xbox One has certainly gained quite a bit of ground lately, it’s not too surprising to see that the PS4 is still leading by quite a large margin more than one year since launch."

From the article:

"While the rivalry known as the ‘ console wars ‘ will likely continue for a very long time, perhaps it’s time to look at the big picture here. Both the PS4 and Xbox One are selling incredibly well, which is always great news for the gaming industry as a whole. But if you’re not particularly interested in how the industry is evolving consider that this rivalry is forcing both Sony and Microsoft to come up with better strategies (more commonly known as schemes) of swaying customers to their side. This should translate to even more promotions, price cuts and most importantly, awesome exclusives for the PS4 and Xbox One".

Whenever people talk about close competition being good for us, I look back at all the bad that came out of the PS1 and PS2 dominating.

Oh, wait...

It could go both ways. Sony didn't start off so well with the PS3 due to that dominance. Much of the good times of the PS1/2 days was because there was one dominant system, so every publisher built games for that console, so it wasn't all Sony.

I'm not sure that in today's industry that games would really become awesome again. The big publishers seem to take a rather jaded and cynical view of their customers, and look more towards maximizing profits before creating compelling content and letting the chips fall where they may.

I really think another golden age of that nature is not going to happen again, just because even if Sony dominates, the competition just has too much influence or can't be ignored.

console wars should be translated to fanboy wars.

A war would require any one with a real change of winning.

This is highly doubtful. I wish it were true, though.

One thing I noticed is that every Christmas the console wat seams to be on a "cease fire". Its really remarkable. But they day after Christmas war resumes.

It’s really old now. All great MMOs decline.

Also who wants to keep paying a monthly fee every month, there are other options like Guild Wars 2 😁with no monthly fee and while not that many people overall compared to FF XIV, it did increase to about 21 mil now.

Looks like Square Enix is self-aware but still stuck in place, they see the player drop and apologize for the bugs, but nothing really changes. Shame, FFXIV used to be the gold standard

My entire free company has stopped playing. The writing has consistently gotten worse and the content is sparse and lacking; unless you are a hardcore player there's very little for you to do. They are over-catering to the people who will grind three+ times a week on a single fight for multiple months when the playerbase by large doesn't want that sort of content. Square needs to dedicate more resources to the game instead of wasting them on mobile and other live service slop.
