PlayStation 3 vs PlayStation 4 – Is It Worth The Upgrade?

The PlayStation 3 has been the host of some really iconic gaming titles, and surely each PS3 owner has managed to pile up some epic memories on the console. However, the PlayStation 4 has arrive, putting an end to an era. The question is, however, if the next gen console can match its predecessor and if it has enough upgrades to be worth upgrading if you already own a PS3.

Considering it's selling faster than the PS3 and at pretty much the same rate as the Wii. I'd say the market already answered that question. If it's line-up interests you or not, is a personal choice.

Abash3778d ago

It's time for people who are fine with just playing on their PS3 to get a PS4 with how many exclusives and multiplats the PS4 has in-store for it all through next year.

DarkAstronaut3778d ago

Yep. 2015 is literally filled with games that aren't on any other console aside from PS4. Full exclusives and console exclusives. AAA and indies. If you don't have one, it's definitely time to get one.

Both PS4 and Xbox One will have a great year for multiplatform games.

Griever3778d ago (Edited 3778d ago )

I already upgraded last week to a PS4 after selling my PS3 and I am glad about it. Actually, it was my wife's advice to do that so I can recover some of the money from my 3 year old PS3. It was a pretty wise advice as I got $220 for it from some university student. I do not think there are any more PS3 exclusives to come except for maybe Tales of Zestiria. All the rest of the games are also coming to PS4 so no loss. Playing FFXIV: Realm Reborn and Dragon Age: Inquisition right now and I am a very happy RPG gamer. :-)

Xaphy3778d ago

I kept my ps3 when I bought my ps4. I found myself not giving any attention to my ps3 anymore. I dont even touch it anymore. Im thinking of selling it, but something inside of me is hesitating as I want to keep it as a memory when I get older.

miyamoto3778d ago (Edited 3778d ago )

PS4 gave me tons of reasons to upgrade from PS3 and now that I did - me so happy.

YouTube & Facebook Share feature
The DualShock 4 Controller
The Speedy Quick Operation
Gameplay Video Recording
Cross Buy
Cross Save
Cross Play
Cloud Save
More bang for the Buck on PS+ Free Instant Game Collection and discounts across my PS3, PSP. PS Vita & PS4
1080p resolution that makes the most of my Samsung TV is a sight for sore eyes and 60fps

So many tons of reasons

BUT I am still keeping my PS3 so many backlogs of awesome games there like Demon's Souls and Ni No Kuni.

rodiabloalmeida3778d ago (Edited 3778d ago )

Next year you say... So in 2015, maybe I get one. Because the avaliable games are not worth to get one right now. The correct answer would be something like "The time for getting a PS4 is next year, not now". And I still have plenty to play on my PS3.

sanosukegtr1233778d ago

I'm sticking to my ps3 for now, no rush in getting a ps4. if the ps4 had the ability to play ps3 games then i will get one but for now its the ps3.

ion6663778d ago

I'm keeping my ps3 because of the collection of fighting games I have on is awesome. Plus I like to go back and play some oldies. I still have my ps1 to play some tekken 3 . And I have ps2 to play some sitcom. I suggest that people keep the old stuff. One day your gonna want to play email again.

OB1Biker3778d ago

Yea of course its worth the upgrade and its always been, I just think its such good value to keep your PS3 as well. I have PS4 PS3 and Vita and with PS+ its a great gaming solution. I dont know why many have a PS4 vs PS3 dilemma.

Lightning Mr Bubbles3778d ago

Of course it's worth it, the PS4 is really getting going now with great games early 2015, and all of 2015 will pretty much be insane with great games not on PS3. So I would say it's the perfect time to get a PS4.

Griever3777d ago (Edited 3777d ago )

9 disagrees for what!? For stating the facts!? Looks like there are bitter and salty fanboys lurking around here somewhere who do not want anybody to upgrade to a PS4.

darthv723777d ago

Personally I dont like the "upgrade" view. That implies you are replacing one for another when there is worth in having both.

Play the games that made the PS3 a hit while building a library of games that make the PS4 a hit. I enjoy games too much to stop playing the old one I get the new.

Concerning the hardware part of this article: since when does the Ps4 have an octa-core cpu running at 2.7 ghz? Last time I checked, it was running at 1.6 ghz...

TheRacingX3778d ago

This guy doesnt know his ass from a hole in the ground.....the PS3 had 8 SPU's or cores that handled tasks for the CPU. It also had 512MB of RAM, not 256, it was split into 2 blocks of 256 one for video one for CPU/SPU. The biggest thing that held back the PS3/cell architecture ( actually the X360 as well ) was RAM. had both of these had more RAM, the new systems would not look so impressive

Svinya3778d ago (Edited 3778d ago )

Why do articles like these always have a comparison picture with the PS3's contrast turned WAY down and the picture looking washed out? To make the difference seem greater??

zero_gamer3778d ago

I have a PS4 since launch and for the most part it's worth the upgrade. Wish the released games were better but when the games I really want to play come out, at least I have the system already.

PS3 has been keeping me busy regarding PlayStation gaming though. There's no way I will ever get rid of that console. Too many good games in my backlog/collection, and there's still games coming exclusively for it. Soon will be the time for Namco Bandai, Atlus, NIS, etc. to support the PS4 with full force.

Blasphemy3778d ago

at this current time i have to say no.

@abash well since those exclusives are not here yet why should i upgrade now?

TBONEJF3778d ago

But I rather wait for at least a year after a new system launch cause they will be more games. i don't want to have my game console sitting around collecting dust. That's why I skipped the WiiU cause I knew NINTENDO is making a new console. Plus they are a lot of PS3 games I can buy for a lower price.

modelgod3777d ago

I'm an avid xboner and even I find this article to be ridiculous.

MeliMel3777d ago

Lol.. what real Xbox owner says "xboner"?

VegasDawg3777d ago (Edited 3777d ago )

That's a pretty fanBOY like deduction, 10 year life cycle of both system last gen has more to do with sales than everything you just said, try taking you fanBOY goggles off and us intelligence when trying to make a ignorantly blanket statement. Just for the record any blanket statement is ignorant, life is full of variables you must account for or you're living in a fantasy land.

Don't get me wrong, Sony has put out a fantastic product and gave the gamer exactly what they wanted, but in no way shape or form can the PS4 compare to the leap in power the Ps3 gave us over the Ps2.
The Ps4 is the most powerful console by far but it's not a "powerful" console, it's now old pc tech.

What I'm trying to say is you're right to a degree, but you forgot the main variable and that makes you wrong, lol. With a 10 year life cycle , longest one in history? People were and are eager to move on unlike any other time in history and you must account for this when talking about why both consoles are selling faster than MOST of there predecessors.

I love my Ps3, I see no reason whatsoever to move on until the Ps4 gets a few more exclusives and that's when I'll jump, it's all about games for me a minor jump in graphics,IMO, is no reason to jump. I still have 55 games in my back log and with such a huge collection there are still many more game I still want to play the PS4 cannot compare to that, not one bit.

strangeaeon3777d ago

I think "by far" is an exaggeration in terms of power. Sadly the echo chamber of sheep bleeting this mantra over and over has contributed to the PS4 dominating.

jrshankill3777d ago (Edited 3777d ago )

DarkAstronaut : "Considering it's selling faster than the PS3"

So we now make choices dependent on sales? I'm pretty sure Justin Beiber sold more than Metallica last year.. should I now rush out and buy a Beiber album?

mmcglasson3777d ago

Don't bother clicking this article... It's a waste of time as he doesn't even get his facts correct.

Yes, getting a PS4 was worth every penny in my opinion. It will continue to be worth it as time goes on.

Off the topic:

One game that has surprised me so far is Secret Ponchos. Yea, it has it's issues/glitches but it's honestly a very addictive game. It's got a mix of League of Legends and WoW arenas (with a western theme). Currently, I'd give it a 8/10 (with it's current issues)(it's also currently free). I've put about 12 hours into the game so far, playing multiple classes. The game gets better when you are playing with someone that has a mic and works as a team.

Hopefully they will make the matchmaking quicker, fix some glitches, add a story mode or practice mode vs AI for people new to the game. I'd also like to see HP values, dmg values, etc.

DarkAstronaut3777d ago

More reasons

-Platnium Games is making a PS4 game
- Gravity Daze PS4

and Dragons Dogma 2 is also a rumored PS4 exclusive

Well if the consumer wants fresh new games for a console then yes, PS3 can still be used as it has a big library, but it will not be a focused product forever!

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3778d ago

@Is It Worth The Upgrade?

To me it is worth it. Whether or not to upgrade is ultimately a personal choice.

Ezz20133778d ago

Not yet
Ps3/Pc for now
but soon when Uncharted 4 comes out.....and i'm keeping my Ps3 too

dRanzer3778d ago

If the order 1889 was actully go to ps3 i will agree with you but this game will out within 2 months, you just cant whit to uncharted 4 :)

Dirtnapstor3778d ago

The upgrade on graphics alone is definitely noticeable. Same game for both systems, night and day difference. Well worth the upgrade.

HighResHero3778d ago

I feel the same way but about Bloodborne. Plus my PS2 ect. aren't going anywhere.

modelgod3777d ago (Edited 3777d ago )

high res Hero, I'm one of the lucky ones whose first generation 60 gig ps3 is still in good condition; best system ever made by far! !

mmcglasson3777d ago (Edited 3777d ago )

I still have my original 60GB PS3 and it's perfect for playing games and movies offline. However, my network card went bad in a lightning storm or something. Sometimes it will connect for maybe a minute then go out. Sometimes it won't connect at all (Wi-Fi/Ethernet connections). Luckily I was able to get my PS3 connected enough times to backup my saved data to the cloud (this was a years ago). It took about 4hours because I had to keep resetting my PS3 and trying to get signed in to do the upload. I will eventually get this system fixed.

I have two original slim PS3s though (one was a 320GB (i think) that I bought when my 60GB got messed up. Then I bought a 160GB from a friend that bought it and wanted to sell it 4months later because he played it maybe 10 times... I bought it from him for $100 bucks and in perfect condition.

modelgod3777d ago

I'm Microsoft for life, and I will be getting ps4 when SF5 comes out, but I also have an affinity for indie games which happens to be my best friends gaming preference and just that alone makes it worth buying. We'll revisit this question in a few years when they stop making games for the ps3. Obviously they have more titles than the ps4 but ps4 is definitely the way to go. Ridiculous article unless your under the age of 19.

mixelon3778d ago

Of course it is (for many), but I wouldn't ditch the PS3 to get a PS4. It's worth keeping them both around for now.

HighResHero3778d ago

Exactly. I still have my PS2.

I'll believe it when I see it. I also don't feel Bethesda games are stat intensive as it is, though. It seems pretty basic.

Bleh I want more stats not less. So lame going for casuals

Aren't RPGs SUPPOSED to be stat heavy? So are they leaning even more away from being an RPG? Ugh ☹️

What If... Destiny 2's Gambit Was a Hit?

In a world where Gambit thrived, Destiny 2’s seasons, storylines, and even its endgame might’ve revolved around PvEvP as a core foundation.

Destiny already has the pretty hyper 'raid' fixation and then they added legendary raid dungeons. Hyperfixating in PvEvP wouldn't work as well because you need a lot more than 2% of the userbase to keep that going unlike raids that are propped up by streamers who make running them their whole job. Most players don't play all the raids let alone run them over and over. And most who play PvP don't want structured PvE elements.
