Photo Mode–The Last of Us Remastered

With the advent of the illustrious photo mode this generation, the possibilities of taking a pretty screenshot in game is much more within the realm of possibility. Infamous: Second Son seems to have been the first game to start this trend and now Shadow of Mordor, The Last of Us: Remastered, and Driveclub have followed suit. Only now with the hardware capabilities of current gen consoles is a suitable screenshot possible. Last gen console visuals weren’t quite up to snuff to deliver high fidelity shots had photo mode been prominent back then(Uncharted 2 and 3 had photo modes for the online and they didn’t produce the prettiest shots).

With that in mind, once a month, Jumptogamer shall be taking a look at our own photo mode screenshots and posting the best the site has. This month’s sole focus is The Last of Us: Remastered. Click on each picture for a full sized image.

There's one spoiler picture in here. So keep out if you don't want to see it.

on the other hand, some nice pics, the game holds up nicely this gen, especially the character models

Prior to its release and upon release, I feel as though journalists and whatnot grossly over exaggerated how good The Last of Us Remastered looks, but in instances it certainly does hold its own against other current gen games.

You're crazy, it looked next gen in my opinion on PS3 already compared to anything on 360 at the time. The PS4 version ran like butter and looked insane graphically, did you even play it?

Ummmm, did I even play it? All the screenshots in that article were shots I took myself in the game's photo mode. I played it 3 times on ps3 and 6 on ps4, I have played plenty of it. SOME elements look very very good. The main character models look excellent and a few of the environments do honestly look amazing, but in many cases I could still notice the ps3 origins. There are very dull and bland textures in many areas. I look at The Last of Us Remastered and think for the most it's just a spruced up last gen game(which it is) with some assets that hold up against next gen titles, but there's a lot of blurriness and blandness to a lot of the game's textures. It is very impressive if you take into consideration that it was initially a ps3 only game.

Joel's model in particular is mind blowing. The amount of detail in his face, beard, and arms(he has goddamn forearm hair) is staggering, but that same level of detail is not kept throughout. It's an inconsistent experience. Since this is my last bubble, if you'd want to have a further discussion about the remastered version of the game, add me on PSN. It's the same as my username here. I got all thumbs downs on my comment completely unjustly. Does it look great? Yes. Does it look great all the time? No.

Infamous: Second Son, Metro Redux(those models are terrible, but the environments are a cut above The Last of Us), Killzone: Shadow Fall, and even Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition I think all look better than The Last of Us Remastered. It is far from the holy grail of console visuals.
