A Few Words on the Death of Ralph H. Baer

Ralph Baer jump-started a revolution of leisure. Realistically, none of us will ever do that. So it’s hard to see him as a human figure.

The Game Awards: Ralph Baer tribute would have been appropriate

While the Iwata tribute was touching and well deserved, and the support for Kojima was awesome... I can't help but feel The Game Awards forgot to mention someone pretty important who we lost shortly after last year's show.

Good article unfortunately most people never heard of him which is why they should've done a tirbute. It would've let people know about him.

Russell, Bushnell or Baer: Who is the true father of video games?

Video games have become an integral part of human culture and have undoubtedly cemented their place in the corridors of the future. It’s hard for one to even consider that once upon a time, not too long ago, it didn’t even exist. Imagine that, a world totally devoid of this wonderful digital dimension. What sad days they must have been.

But who are we to thank for our beloved past time? What beautiful mind laid the foundation for this great creation?

“Who is the true inventor of video games?”, a question so laden with controversy that, to this day, it is still one of the most heated debates in gaming.

Bushnell is like Henry Ford. He may not have been the first to build a video game, but he's the one who brought it to the masses

yewles13136d ago

I say neither, it's Dennis Ritchie.

When did you know you were a gamer?

MWEB GameZone writes: "Mark Baer, the son of the late Ralph Baer, on his beginnings in gaming: "I would like to believe that I was the first one to win a video game, because I kicked my brother’s butt. I'm certain of it."

We're all here because we're gamers, but when did you know you were a gamer? Are you the old school arcade gamer, or did you stumble upon gaming like most of us. Share your stories"

When I gave my barbie doll to the dog & insisted on a game in stead. True story. Half-Life was the game that really hooked me though. Never stopped playing since that day.

haha, nice. for me it was when all i wanted to do was play toe jam and earl all day long when i was 3-4, and dreamt of living in funkotron. they all hooked me, but Socom II was the one that made me stop eating and showering. XD

edit: marks of passion at 12 years old, but now it's just sad considering that im 24 D:. heh

When dad got me a Sega Master System for Xmas when i was 4 (alex the kid and chopperlift where so hard), then I became a true gamer when I got my first job at 16 and built my own gaming PC. Made all my mates so jealous back then, it was so kick ass at the time, had the Godzilla 3.06ghz Pentium 4 HT edition and a full gig of RAM when nothing had even 256mb yet.

Now smart phones are 8 times as powerful as that system lol.

Reibooi3390d ago

Doom was what hooked me. I had played plenty of games up to that point but Doom was the one that made me fall in love with gaming. Still love it I can go back and play it and it never gets old.

Afirmitive3390d ago

For me was when I played brave fencer musashi and dreamt of playing games with similar sound tracks.

Was my very first game btw.

HanCilliers3390d ago

No! It's so not. Why should we stop gaming, ever

PoSTedUP3390d ago

The orginal Half-life was indeed one of the greatest games ever made, a very good way to get into gaming

HanCilliers3390d ago

Half_Life didnt get me into gaming, gamed long before it, it was however a turning point for me

HoldenZA3391d ago

When I was spending every other day at the arcade when I was 5.

plut0nash3391d ago

When I first played Stunts on a DOS PC at age 6 ;) Never got a gaming rig till years later though.

SonZeRo3391d ago

Playing NES games from probably age 5 or so. Tetris and Mario on the 100 in 1 cartridges lol

StarLord_Who3391d ago

The correct title for this age is :

When did you not want to be a gamer anymore?

The majority of gamers now are horrible whiny sulky sexists who only care about who owns what console.

Not a fanboy or a troll, i'm just saying what i feel. No real person who likes games has given me a reason to like the voice of the gamer anymore. It's just controversy all the time. That along with broken games and even me whining mid sentence is enough to scare most sane people away.

Clown_Syndr0me3391d ago

You mention all negative points, yet your the only negative comment I see here.

Mulletino3390d ago (Edited 3390d ago )

"who only care about who owns what console" that's every aspect of life homie. Sports fashion. Jobs. Think about it. You're not describing gamers, you're describing peolple.

Sillicur3390d ago

Thats a bit dark dont you think? I shall never give up on gaming :)
