Destiny’s Exotics System is a Disaster

This weekend was the first time that mysterious Exotics vendor Xur returned to the Tower in Destiny since the launch of the Dark Below expansion. For those of you who hadn’t heard this is also the first weekend of Destiny’s new exotics system. Exotics from before the expansion will now be sold by Xur every week so players can turn them in for an upgrade. The idea is to help stop old exotics from becoming useless following the expansion.

I'm almost fed up with all the boring grinding and all the effort and hrs I put into this game to get jack shit all the time. I need a new game to get into! The division please!!

joab7773838d ago

Wouldn't it have been much simpler to simply add a row to each exotic?

Add exotic shards as the new upgrade currency. Maybe 8 total to fully upgrade the last amd new level. Sell these shards each week as well as getting from breakdowns...that's fine...but why all the added insanity.

They coulda just made it so u needed 4 exotic shards and 2500 glimmer for each circle. Very simple and u dont have to wait for ur weapon to appear.

And here's the kicker. You can just keep adding new rows as the light level increases.

Manubiggs3838d ago

The Division is being published by Ubisoft ... temper your expectations.

rdgneoz33838d ago

Had high hopes for the division until Unity and The Crew released...

averagejoe263838d ago

What? It's not a disaster, at all.

The_KELRaTH3838d ago

Of course it is!

If it weren't for all these measures requiring you to get various currencies to upgrade weapons and armour everybody could have been happily sitting with their controller doing absolutely nothing with everything maxed out!

:)

Broken #1

1. You already have an Exotic Helmet. Xur is selling that same Exotic Helmet. You can buy that helmet directly from Xur for 13 Strange Coins, and it's already upgraded. Breakdown you old helmet get the Exotic shard (fully upgrade later) + Glimmer + Material.

Total Helmet cost: 13 Strange Coins
Bonus: 1 exotics shard, a little bit of glimmer, 7 class materials.

2. Using the new upgrade system you buy an exotic shard for 7 strange coins. Spend +7500 glimmer, and buy the upgrade to that helmet. Then you buy another exotic shard to fully upgrade it later.

Total Helmet cost: 14 strange coins (buying the 2 E shards) + 7500 glimmer
Bonus: NOTHING

It cost more to upgrade armor with the new system, than it is to simply rebuy the stuff from Xur. This is exactly why the upgrade system is stupid and broken. The system benefits those who spent little to no time grinding in the game by allowing them the same formula to exotics we're use to, but at stronger levels. Meanwhile, it punishes those who did days / weeks worth of grinding to get exotics and max them out. It wouldn't be as big of an issue if upgrading your current exotics kept them at the same level you had prior to the upgrade.

Or better yet they could have simply added 4 new circles to the current exotics. 1 bubble for a new ability, and 3 more bubbles to upgrade the Light and Attack Power to 331. As well as adding, you know more than 4 new exotic weapons, but wait all this was most likely originally part of the game, but was taken considering getting to all the "new mission" simply involve opening doors to an already accessible areas on the Earth and Moon.

Or simply drop the glimmer cost and and strange coin cost down to something reasonable like 1 strange coin to upgrade + 7 strange coins for exotic shards + 0 glimmer. The whole point of selling materials was because even Bungie developer said it was annoying having to walk across the planets looking for upgrade materials, so what do they do allow you to buy them with marks (1 step forward), then create this new system where you have to farm even harder for glimmer with a max of 25,000 (2 steps back).

It's stupid and completely flawed logic and design.

The_KELRaTH3838d ago

But your existing helmet might offer better specs than the new one. certainly the case for my hunter helmet so I'll upgrade when the option is available.

Lennoxb633838d ago

I don't get all the bashing of Destiny. To me its a great game. I may be in the minority but I've invested more than 200 hours into Destiny. The only problem I have with it now is how hard it is to get ascendant shards.

ABizzel13838d ago

It has nothing to do with the game, it's the stupid design decision Bungie keep making with the game.

DJStotty3838d ago

If you want plenty of ascendant shards then your best bet is doing the vault of glass raid on hard and getting the chests. You can get around 10 shards or possibly more (if the game is feeling generous).

As for the new upgrade system for existing exotics. I dont have an issue with it but luckily i got the upgraded icebreaker during a mission last night so not too bad :)

JeffGUNZ3837d ago

I think you mean RADIANT shards/energy.

akurtz3838d ago

57th article.
Sure its a grind but, dont MMO type games do this with almost every expansion, level cap goes up, stuff is stronger, more upgrades and more reason to grind. Get used to it.

caseh3838d ago

" level cap goes up, stuff is stronger, more upgrades and more reason to grind."

Think the general term for that is a power creep.

TheSaint3838d ago

How are my 300 weapons useless exactly? 331 compared to 300 is literally 10% difference.

That's massively different to useless.

akurtz3838d ago

In raid and iron banner PvP, it makes a difference

TheSaint3838d ago

I guess my and others definition of useless is different.....

My 300 fatebringer is sad now. Suddenly I haven't been killing shizz with it all weekend. In fact it obviously hasn't been out killing everyone I play with either, weird that seeing as I thought it did do all that.

I'd happily go up against any of you wielding a 331 weapon with my 300 Fatebringer.

bananaboats3838d ago

if it isnt iron banner than your weapon damage doesnt mean anything. now if we were in the Crotas End raid and we both were shooting an elite knight I would kill it much faster than you with a 331 weapon

Microsoft bought all of Zenimax Media for 7 billion, while Sony paid 4 billion for Bungie. I think Microsoft got the better deal due to acquiring Fallout, ElderScrolls and Doom.

anast288d ago

This can't be true. They only bought Starfield...

So you're saying that Microsoft has missed out on so many huge gaming franchise in the last 25 years from GTA exclusivity to guitar hero and destiny it's just laughable they had so many misses

Reaper22_288d ago

Yea, but they're still 100 times more wealthy than Sony. I would say it worked out well.

Gamingsince1981288d ago

Xbox is dead all that money doesn't help.

Hypertension140288d ago

What has work out well? It sure as hell had nothing to do with Xbox.

andy85288d ago

That isn't because of Xbox though. This is a gaming page, not an I get supplemented by father Windows page

Bathyj288d ago

Microsoft's money has nothing to do with Xbox.
Xbox is a money pit to them they would love to ditch but are after some ROI first.

Let's face it, Xbox is like a red headed stepchild that steals from you to buy drugs.

Hofstaderman288d ago (Edited 288d ago )

MIicrosoft is NOT XBOX. The current situation illustrates this. And Microsoft wants its ROI.

@Bathyj and daddy Satya has just force admitted Phil to rehab.

gold_drake288d ago

you know why MS has so much money, and it aint cause of the gaming xbox branch.

so lets not kid ourselves.

PhillyDonJawn288d ago

Xbox was shown to be more profitable than ps

jznrpg288d ago

@PhillyDownJawn not more profitable. More revenue with ABK acquisition but them going multiplat shows they are not making much profit

ocelot07287d ago

That's great for Xbox gamers ain't it that Microsoft are more wealthy than Sony. Is that really a argument use are using now lol?

Imagine me in my job. Arguing with a fellow security guard at another company. Hahah well the company I work for is worth £800m the one you work for is only work £600m!

287d ago
Knightofelemia287d ago

Microsoft may have more money but Sony has the talented studios and the games to back up those studios.

Plus turning down Marvel too. Spiderman is only exclusive to Playstation because of that

Hedstrom288d ago

Best deal deal in gaming must be when Sony bought Insomniac for 229 million dollars. They made over 800 millions on Spiderman for the ps4 alone. Thats just crazy!

XBManiac287d ago

More in the 1.000 million now.

gold_drake288d ago

another Interview?

how is he the only one who loves the spotlight as much as he does lol

Futureshark287d ago

Let's not forget he also famously passed on Spider-man, Genshin Impact and GTA3.

However it's almost kind of cute how he can keep that sh1t-eating grin and say he's a 'no regrets' kind of guy, especially when you think how much just these 5 titles could have swung the world in Xbox's favour instead of Sonys.

How he's kept his job I don't know, he must sure be keeping Papa Nadella's shaft warm somehow.

"But, but Gamepass, he introduced that!!!"

Yes he did, and now look at Xbox, all it's exclusives are coming to Playstation now rendering the platform obsolete.

DarXyde287d ago

Honestly, with that kind of track record, you can't convince me Spencer hasn't eaten it from the back in the name of self preservation. Probably unwashed...and at least twice.

That aside, my interpretation of everything here is Xbox has been mismanaged a bit too much and Nadella came down from his throne. The way it is now, I don't believe for a minute the multiplatform move was Spencer's idea. I don't even think the acquisitions was Spencer's work. At this point, I reckon he's got as much power in his role as Hunter Biden at a Ukrainian energy company.

DivineHand125287d ago

You can never tell how things will turn out if he had said yes to those games. Xbox already has access to some great IPs, however, they hardly do anything with them or fail to deliver. It's also possible their presentation wasn't good at the time, and they made sure the next presentation was better.

I believe that part of being successful is releasing things in the right place at the right time.

Many major corporations have a story similar to passing on successful business ideas. Let us look at Sony Pictures for example. Back when Marvel went bankrupt, they had the opportunity to buy the entire Marvel for only $25 Million but turned them down. An unnamed big shot at Sony reportedly claimed that “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters,”. They ended up taking Spiderman for $10 Million instead.

https://www.avclub.com/sony...

Fast forward to today, we can see what the Marvel brand has done for Disney. Is it possible the same success would have been possible had Sony acquired those IPs. We can't say that for sure and it is possible most of those IPs that are successful today may not have been used.
