Sony To Provide Refunds To Settle FTC Charges Over Misleading Ads For Vita

Sony Computer Entertainment America (“Sony”) has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it deceived consumers with false advertising claims about the “game changing” technological features of its PlayStation Vita handheld gaming console during its U.S. launch campaign in late 2011 and early 2012.

Snookies122084d ago (Edited 2084d ago )

Wow, seriously? I bought mine before June 2012...

insomnium22084d ago

Anyone using false advertisement deserves a little slap on the wrist.

Kingthrash3602083d ago

When will they hand it out?

kreate2083d ago (Edited 2083d ago )

I bought a vita but end up selling it. Do i get something from sony as well?

Edit: nvmd i bought mine in late 2012...

Dee_912083d ago

Someone needs to do this to Polyphony Digital, its been a year now and its still missing features announced way prior to release..

XboxOneX2083d ago

Where is my refund for the LINUX that was removed from my PS3? I am very upset at you SONY. You better fix this by letting me install LINUX to my VITA.

awi59512083d ago

Doesn't sony always do that?

Pixel_Enemy2083d ago

I bought a 3G version on launch. Still have it and use it. Sounds like a good deal to me haha. Especially since I use my 4g on my phone to tether and since the Vita thinks it's wifi I CAN play multiplayer on the go!

miyamoto2084d ago

Shocks, I sure am gonna miss out on them refunds!
But I never thought Sony advertised those features. I know only a handful of games on PS3 use remote play on PS Vita and I have some like ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

jocomat92083d ago (Edited 2083d ago )

Any Canadian that pre ordered LBP3 PS4 on PSN for 69.99 is entitled to a full refund. As soon as LBP3 released it was 59.99. And anyone who preordered got charged 10 bucks more. Friend got a full discount and got to keep the game. Spread the word. Ps i have screen shot evidence of the game being 59.99 for Ps4 so if you need it pm me. Sony is being quiet about this one.

Fullmetalevolust2084d ago

I did too, I bought it in May 2012. Phheww!
I am very happy about my purchase, love to play on my vita, but excited to receive a lil' bundle of joy to spend on PSN.

How will they know whether or not it's been purchased before June 2012?
When we activated the device via PSN?

Mr_Writer852083d ago

Most likely :)

I'm a huge Sony fan and a huge fan of the Vita.

But it's good they got called out on this. Corporations shouldn't get away with this sort of thing.

Kidmyst2083d ago

I still use mine and my 4 Year old even uses it and enjoys playing Minecraft, Joe Danger, and my singing monsters on it.

breakpad2084d ago (Edited 2084d ago )

idiotic statements from FTC against Sony i think ...these were probably minor features that were meant to be available for Vita but later Sony canceled need for refund IMO

KonsoruMasuta2084d ago

Lol, I really hope you're not serious.

Companies should not promise and advertise something when they can't deliver on it. This is a lesson to be learned.

t-hall7852084d ago

only idiot here is you for saying that nonsense

SilentNegotiator2083d ago

Please don't say stuff like that. A hundred of my brain cells just killed themselves.

Buff10442083d ago

Sony screwed up. The N4G community needs to get over it.

ThunderPulse2084d ago

So if you bought a Vita how do you get the money?

KonsoruMasuta2084d ago

They should send you an email.

Conzul2084d ago

PSN credit, most likely. Can't say I mind. Owned 3 Vitas, Day 1 purchaser.

Every time I hear "Vita", I dream of a PS4 Gravity Rush.

Angeljuice2083d ago

Only for consumers in the USA, but is this being challenged in any other regions?
Did they even use the same advertising/ claims in different regions?

Just curious, but I would appreciate answers if anybody genuinely knows.

Blaze9292084d ago (Edited 2084d ago )

Wow, I bought the Japanese version. I wonder if that will apply :-/

I need that $50 lol

Gority2084d ago

Sorry but I doubt it would apply :(

jjonez182084d ago

You would be surprised at how far you get if you just asked ;)

General rule for life, my friend.

Call Sony support.

hiredhelp2083d ago (Edited 2083d ago )

Only thing i didnt like about the PSVita as a owner of most psp other than Go is its just not as big game wise we need more devs on board its a powerfull handheld.

qwerty6762084d ago

yeah, just like microsoft deceiving exclusive announcements.

Sony trying to do kinda the same thing here and now forced to pay compensation.

hopefully this will teach them a lesson.

Ps4andxb12084d ago

Sony advertised the ps3 at 120fps too.

Volkama2084d ago

And the PS2 could render Toy Story with it's emotion engine.

But those weren't advertisements, those were enthusiastic people saying stupid things.

TheRedButterfly2084d ago

Kinda the same thing, really... Someone being on a stage issuing you false promises is just as bad, if not worse than, seeing ads on late-night television.

Them enemy crabs and their weak spots...

Volkama2084d ago

Meh at least they delivered on real time weapon change. Still see that in games today you know.

Spotie2084d ago

It was Microsoft that said that, not Sony.

"One of the basic premises of the Xbox is to put the power in the hands of the artist," Blackley said, which is why Xbox developers "are achieving a level of visual detail you really get in 'Toy Story.'"

Can this stop now?

Volkama2084d ago (Edited 2084d ago )

You're right spotie. The emotion engine toy story thing was nit Sony, it was leaks about the emotion engine the day before Sony talked about it.

Sony's statement was "Graphics compatible to 3D movies in real time", which isn't the same thing at all.

Crazy Ken and co said some pretty funny things over the years. Bill Gates said we'd never need more than an 8GB hard drive.

It's ok to laugh about it. Constant defending must get exhausting...

AutoCad2084d ago

They also advertised the ps4 to run every game 1080p 60fps.

Big_Game_Hunters2083d ago (Edited 2083d ago )

they also promised 20 new exclusive IPs in 2014. Sony has been selling the PS4 on almost nothing but hype so far. I remember when Sony gave IGN official ps3 specs that said it had 1.8TF lol.

AndrewLB2083d ago

No. They just advertised certain games as being 1080p when they weren't.

Killzone: Shadow Fall-

Or how they advertised WatchDogs as being 1080p/60 on PS4...

SniperControl2083d ago (Edited 2083d ago )

Shadowfall's SP was at [email protected]

That watchdogs ad was taken down with-in hours after they realised there mistake.

Atleast ps4 is @ super charged pc?... they are pushing 1080p 60fps every game.

Planetside shows it off very well..

I have been waiting for a 60fps standard since 2006! 2021 can't come soon enoug! Ps5 4k 60fps!!

Yeah right.....

ritsuka6662083d ago

I remember Ken kutaragi saiyng: PS3 will be 4D'' '' “Microsoft shoots for the moon. Sony shoots for the sun.” “We’re not going to equip the PS3 with a HDD by default, because no matter how much capacity we put in it, it won’t be enough.”

Man, good times... i hope Kutaragi return for Playstation soon.

Angeljuice2083d ago

The 4th Dimension he referred to was the passage of time, it didn't translate well. If you knew what you are speaking about you would know this.
He was talking of 3D environments that change and evolve over time. Plants growing, walls degrading e.t.c.

He said so in many interviews at the time.

DeadManMMX2084d ago (Edited 2084d ago )

Omg, I wondered if anyone would ever say anything about this. I remember watching the ad over and over in walmart on our display kiosk the first year and wondering how they got away with it. They were advertising remote play with Ps3 that didn't come anywhere near working until the PS4 came out. Not to mention the fact that remote play was useless and impossible on the 3G data plan offered. The commerical showed games that weren't even on Vita being played portably. They were also advertising being able to stop a game on Ps3 and then resume it immediately on the Vita. I believe the game in the commerical was MLB. It really made it look amazing but then it came out and....Nope. The Vita is a wonderful handheld maybe my favorite of all time discounting nostalgia from the original gameboy and slightly above the DS. Those initial advertisements were definitely deceptive.

Edit: I wrote this comment before reading the article from my own experience. I'm actually surprised by how similar the two are word for word.

TimeSkipLuffy2084d ago

I think the compensation is still too low. Sony, MS, BigN should pay more in those cases. Deceiving is wrong and law should not allow big companies getting away with this. But it must really hurt to teach them a lesson.

Beetey2084d ago

They are giving a $50 voucher to everyone who bought one in the first three or so months. I would hardly say they are "getting away with this." Quite frankly, I'm just thankful to be getting anything, especially considering I was unaware of the lawsuit before today.
