Square Enix is about to bring Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, arguably one of the best entries in the Dragon Quest series, to iOS and Android. Dragon Quest V starts out when the protagonist is just a little boy traveling with his father.
Today Square Enix made two new Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride action figures available for pre-order as part of its Bring Arts brand.
With bold framing and an epic story, Dragon Quest V asserts itself as one of the most impressive RPGs of all time.
Role-playing games are one of the most flexible genres because unlike shooters or platformers or sports games, they are less identified by what the player does and more by how the player does it.
Turn based holds a special place in my heart. But, when an action RPG is done right, it can be really amazing.
I used to be all about action RPGs and scoff at turn based ones, but Legend of Dragoon changed my opinion on them. Lost Odyssey and the Mario & Luigi series sealed my love for turn based RPGs.
Really would've been a crime missing out on games like Fire Emblem: Awakening, Persona 5 and Octopath Traveler. Those games are way too damn good!
I'm playing Legend of dragoon now. It's cool, despite some dodgy translation every now and then it holds up well. If you're gonna take inspiration for a JRPG no reason to not take it from Final Fantasy at its prime.
So there is some nuance to this question.
You can have turn based like Dragon Quest or Persona.
You can have active time battle like Final Fantasy 7 or Final Fantasy X-2.
You can have full blown action RPG like Star Ocean, or FF15
You can have even more nuanced systems like the Gambit system in FF12.
But to keep things simple we can say turn turn based vs everything else.
In that case I would have to say everything else, because there are many different sub systems that fit into that.
Fire Emblem Awakening. That game got me thru 2 deployments way back. Kept me sane. 🔥🔥🔥 28293;
Both for me, turnbase well some have flashy awesome attacks and gives you time to think. Action keeps you on your toes and let you actually control if you take damage or not.
I guess I'm somewhat similar though in some sense I tend to prefer Action. Though I couldn't live with one or the other. I need both in my life. Regardless of which, most importantly are to me, character design, combat, AI, and story in no particular order. There are times I don't want to control all party members when the option is present. other times, you can only control one. So good AI and a variety of strategies like DQXI has is a very important and nice feature.
Xenoblade was absolutely phenomenal last year ('17) as was Dragon Quest XI this past year. I also finally wrapped up Ni No kuni 2 and while it wasn't brilliance like the first it was an excellent game. Suikoden 1, 2, and V, SMT Nocture, Lost Odyssey, Tales games, Blue Dragon, Dragon Quest VII and VIII even strategy such as Disgaea 1-3 & Final Fantasy Tactics have all been excellent. And of course Final Fantasy, give or take. As were about 50-200 others. Personally I love both and couldn't live with one over the other.
Yeah, that's the biggest kicker for me. Most Action RPGs allow you to equip stuff, have character customization, have dialogue options, etc . . .
However, when it comes down to it, most action RPGs try to involve strategy by making you change your load-out to better fit different encounters, or by having you use potions that enhance your strength or defenses against certain enemies. Things like that. IMO that's just too much of a hassle and it only breaks up the action gameplay. It's like the two systems of calculated strategy and quick paced action combat are completely at odds with each other. Every once in a while an action RPG that's really good and meshes the two comes along, but largely they're just open world action games with skill trees and customization.
I disagree with you guys. I mean ATB just teaches you to learn the strategy and use it faster. Its the same thing, just faster. Final Fantasy X-2 has a supremely strategic system. You just had to be fast. If it ever got to fast, you could always hit pause.
But on closer inspection, its is the same thing as FFX just presented differently. Seeing whose turn was next was no different than looking at whose bar was about to fill. (with the biggest caveat being that in FFX2, you didn't get a clock for your enemy.)
They both have their place. Though it wasn't a "great" game. Enchanted Arms had a top tier strategic turn based battle system.
I like both as long as the game, mechanics and story is well designed. I liked the last Dragon Quest game turn based system and I think it be better.
Turn based and action both have their places and I enjoy both pretty equally. Depends on my mood and how good the battle system is for both cases. Octopath Traveler and Persona 5 were amazing, but so was Ys VIII and Bloodborne.
So you cannot really go wrong in my book as long as it is a quality game overall.
Definitely turn-based, especially when its a battle system like Trails of Cold Steel, Grandia 2, and Persona 5. These battle systems have so many different aspects, attacks/abilities, and strategies involved.
Ooooh, Grandia 2?!
I haven't heard about that game in a long while, but I once watched a friend play through it and I loved it!
He got mad at me because I rushed him through the story [I couldn't wait to see more and got impatient], and he got stuck under-leveled for a boss and had to stop to grind a lot.XD
I think I also bought it at one point but I seem to have lost it...
If you like Grandia, though, I have a feeling you'll love the Ar Tonelico series.
Spoiler; it has even better music and a deeper plot than Grandia, plus tons of humorous item creation skits to discover.
I like both, but turn based games hold a special place in my heart, because I have so many great memories with those kinds of games and are a big reason why I love RPGs.
I like both but I do prefer turn based. My top fave rpgs are turn based. Most arpgs to me are hit or miss. Too much things going on and all just hack and slash button mashing with little to no strategy. But if done right, arpgs can be amazing.
Edit: No I did not read the comments before commenting myself lol.
turnbased. much more intense experience. xcom2 and mutant year zero being among the best turnbased strategy money can buy.
In this day & time I prefer action rgs but I don't mind playing a good turn base rpg, this gen I really enjoyed playing Persona 5,Dragon Quest 11 & Battlechasers.
It depends on the developer.
CD Projekt Red and From Software are amazing at action RPGs, and old school Square, without Enix, were fantastic at turn based battles.
I was a huge turn based fan playing old FF games, but from XIII onwards, they lost the ability to make the mechanics interesting, and their take on action RPG in XV was pathetic. I liked Dragon Quest XI and Octopath Traveller, and think there is still a lot of life left in turn based... Unfortunately, the casual market keep demanding for it to die.
I'm fairly sure FFVII will be a bad experience for older fans if it strays into mostly action territory, but these are the games that drew me into RPG gaming in the first place... It's sad to see turn based being swept to the side.
I prefer action RPGs. Turn-based is fine, but it can feel outdated and you don't really feel like you are in complete control while playing them.
Depends on the game and how engaging the combat is. Action can be really fun if they don't make the combat needlessly complex and turn-based can be a real drag if there is too much waiting and the pace of battles are slow.
turn based, I miss Shining Force 2 and what it offered as simple strategy
One of the best turn based RPG I've ever played, Divinity original sin 2 and one of the action RPG, The Witcher 3. Though I would prefer action RPG more but given the choice it entirely depends on the game.
I prefer action myself but I'll play both. I prefer to react to enemies in real time rather than going through menus but at the same time FF7 is one of my favorite games.
turn bases is better. just imagine final fantasy 15 with turn based combat or even better if final fantasy 13 had it
Well gameplay doesn't get much better than Dark Souls so when they're done well ARPGs are king, however a lot of the time they aren't and would have been better as turn based. FF15 for example would have been better if it was turn based.
It depends what mood you're in too, sometimes it's nice to sip a cup of tea and plan your next move in the middle of a hectic battle, at other times you want your reflexes tested and have to gulp your tea down when you get a chance.
Turn based is harder I like a challenge u cant run, when you hit someone you will get hit back.......fire emblem mad me love it even more back in the days that if your character die they gone for the rest of the game you basically had to be careful every move you make or you lose one of your favorite characters
Action based you can run and hide and recover easily which make the game easier
People love action because its less deaths for them
i bought the last south park game cause I'm a big south park fan but a half gour in and i was already bored with the turn base fighting. i set it down and have yet to pick it up again. i want to force myself to like it thinking I'll get used to it but i haven't reached the level needed to do so....
oddly enough, the last turn based game i actually enjoyed (but never finished) is super mario rpg....action rpg's like zelda i have no problems playing.
i’m the same. Don’t enjoy turn based games that much, grew up playing FF3, Chrono Trigger, secret of mana, the old pokémon games and my favourite is Super Mario RPG, that was a classic.
But Id rather play a good Action RPG over a turn based any day of the week. There is no contest to me.
the one game that made me hate it the most was final fantasy 7 with it's random encounters that you couldn't even see on screen and couldn't opt out of. not to mention the long drawn out 5 minute spells that you had to sit through. i wanted to fling that game against the wall but i just said it would be my 1st and last time i will ever play a final fantasy game.
Action RPG - willing to take risks without a chance pause (roll of the dice).
Trun based - training wheels, needs momma and breaks, or socializing digitally more so than playing the game.
I’m not fan of turn based (that’s jrpg’s cliche elements fault), but if the Story is enticing enough...
Action RPG's all the way. Love some turn based too, but Diablo 2, 3 are the pinnacle for me.
I like the hybrid type where the characters' speed determines their action time in the queue but happens in real time. So if you don't react fast enough the next character in line can go ahead of you.
Turn based more over here. I'd like to see more games this way instead of defaulting to ARPG like they seem to be going these days. I don't mind ARPG, but the idea of having both means we need to have game that cover both as well. Turn based isn't getting nearly the same attention.
Action in a heart beat. I´m not really missing turn-based at all. Can be good when it´s fast paced though.
Only turn based I've ever like enough to finish over 30 years I've been playing is South Park Stick of Truth
Turn based is hands down my favorite. To me you can be more strategic about how to head into fights.
Action. I like tactical turn based like xcom more than the stationary games like battlechasers. I don’t know if if you would consider something like darkest dungeon an rpg but I love that game.
I prefer strategy RPGs but Square ain't making FFT anymore.... Got a new Fire Emblem coming soon though. XXXD
Turn-based baby! I much prefer the methodic, strategic element it provides that can't be replicated in ARPG. BUT, the combat still has to move fast. Too many TB games have had slooow combat animations or pauses between actions and it just drives me nuts.
Anyways, both can be awesome when done right, but given the choice? It's turn-based.
Definitely Turn-Based. I want to kick back and relax, use my brain instead of my reflexes, and control every action of every character in my party, which even makes me feel more connected to the characters during the story.
Action. I grew up with turn-based but now that feels dragged out and boring to me. I also can't stand sitting through literally 1 - 4 hour long pieces of dialogue between gameplay.
Turn based for the most part, but I don't mind playing an action rpg. That being said don't really care for random battles though.
I'm more interested in "Story," and "Characters," when playing an RPG than anything else. That said, I think both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Both have their place and their shining examples. I'm right now playing Dragon's Dogma (for the fifth time!), Which is probably my favorite action RPG. As for turn-based, my series of choice will ALWAYS be Shin Megami Tensei.
Action RPGs all day.
Turn based combat was good when you didn't have analog sticks back in the day but now that you have dual analog sticks and mouse support that old style of play is outdated in my opinion.
I prefer to have full control over my character when playing if I wanted to wait my turn for every single play I'd play the board games chess or checkers.
I can't think of an party based Arpg that even comes close to the greatness that is, for example, Persona 5 turn-based combat. When done well, turn-based is far superior for a party-based game.
Call me old fashioned, but I've always preferred turn based. It's what I grew up on (Baldurs Gate, Pools of Radiance, etc.).
I'm almost 40, so being able to chill and take my time probably is a factor.
I guess that's why amongst all of these newer RPGs, The Divinity: Original Sin games are my favorite.
Action RPG, the last turn based Rpg's I played were radiata stories Lost Odyssey and Gladius although gladius wasn't really an rpg lol
Turn based all day long. After watching the final fantasy 7 trailer I was really disappointed and will definitely be giving it a miss.
I rate that game as 1 of the best aind turn base gave it it's charm and challeng. If
Action. I'd rather lose a fight because I made a mistake instead of the cpu deciding I "missed". Only turn based I really enjoyed was Lost Odyssey.
Turn based. I like having the ability to pace the gameplay the way I want and turn based gives you time to think but also time to appreciate the game built around you and its world.
Both can get repetitive, but both can also be done right as well.
That is a VERY tricky question...
TLDR: Regular turn-base gets boring, but tossing in twists/gimmicks/abilities to keep it fresh changes that. Otherwise, I prefer action.
The long version with examples:
I guess I prefer action, but when the turnbased system adds something different to speedup the pace or make it more interesting, then it's a different story.
For example; Bravely Default's namesake battle system adds a layer of strategy, and when grinding you're allowed to set some auto battle stuff to make the grind take less time.
Paper Mario's series and the Mario&Luigi RPG series's action commands also spice things up from the usual turnbased formula.
Similarly, Ar Tonelico 2 has you defending your partner Reyvateil on enemy turns, and how well you do affects both your power on attack, as well as how fast and powerful her Song Magic becomes; your performance inspires hers and makes the both of you stronger as a result.
And as it's set to amazing music, it immerses and inspires the player to do better, too.
There's other examples, but that should get the point across.
Action RPG HANDS DOWN. Turn Based doesn't belong anymore on console in this day and age. Fine with it on mobile though. FFXII, FFXIV, FFXV, Kingdom Hearts, is where it's at. You can do action with strategy. Hoping FF7 Remake combines FFXV with Kingdom Hearts III.
I love both, but my all-time favorites are turn-based (Chrono, FF 4/6/9, Lunar, Phantasy Star 2/3/4).
For me it's turn based but this is partly an emotional reaction based on Final Fantasy in particular. My fondest gaming memories were FF7 and 8 and I also really enjoyed lost odyssey. I tried playing the newer Final Fantasy games and I just don't enjoy them as much and I find myself wanting to go back to the turn based. I think you may find that gamers I my age bracket (I'm 33) will lean towards turn based as it is what we grew up playing and some nostalgia will be at play also. Some of the younger gamers may not even have experienced a turn based RPG and playing one now would probably feel really slow to said gamers.
